A single-prop fishing trawler is not an obvious choice for conversion into a superyacht, but for the owner of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10859" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scintilla Maris 45.4m (148'11&quot;)Scheepswerf Maaskant 1988">Scintilla Maris</a>&nbsp;it was the only one. We travelled to the&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6228" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scheepswerf Maaskant (Company)">Damen Maaskant</a>&nbsp;shipyard near Rotterdam to find out more.&nbsp;The entrepreneur owner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10859" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scintilla Maris 45.4m (148'11&quot;)Scheepswerf Maaskant 1988">Scintilla Maris</a> grew up fascinated by tug boats and trawlers. A part of his family are fishermen from the island of Texel in northern Holland and as a young boy he would spend time sketching the workboats he saw there. At college he borrowed money from relatives to convert an old tugboat and lived on board for some years. In 1979 he emigrated to the US, set up three successful businesses and is now the proprietor of Richland Rum in Georgia. But his old love affair with trawlers never left him.“In the 1980s and into the ‘90s these steel-hulled boats represented the epitomy of Dutch shipbuilding,” he says. “They were very sturdily built, almost over-engineered, to deal with conditions in the North Sea. I’d been following the Dutch beam trawlers for years and when one became available as part of a decommissioning scheme in 2006 I decided to buy her, basically with a virtual handshake over the phone.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/186402/image/large-a4c59cf2689848f16519a85a74d79425.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/186402">The boat in question was <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10859" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scintilla Maris 45.4m (148'11&quot;)Scheepswerf Maaskant 1988">Scintilla Maris</a>, a 45.6-metre beam trawler launched in 1988. Beam trawlers are so called because they fish with a net on each side of the hull that is attached to a steel beam to hold them open. It is a method used for catching bottom-dwelling fish, including sole, plaice, turbot and monkfish, and their design owes much to the mainly Dutch shipyards that pioneered them.&nbsp;BUILT TO LAST<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10859" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scintilla Maris 45.4m (148'11&quot;)Scheepswerf Maaskant 1988">Scintilla Maris</a> was the first of eight sisterships built by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6228" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scheepswerf Maaskant (Company)">Maaskant Shipyard</a> near Rotterdam, now part of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1821" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Yachting (Company)">Damen Group</a>, which has over 70 years’ experience of building trawlers. He returned to the same yard to carry out an initial refit to remove all the fishing gear and upgrade some of the onboard systems. The project then ground to a halt for almost a decade as her owner was determined to come up with a work list and specs himself, mainly by spending time on other yachts, while juggling his business interests.Work resumed in 2019 when the shipyard began a full conversion by stripping back the hull to bare metal and removing the interior, decking and propulsion. After additional modifications to the hull and superstructure, all the metal surfaces were sandblasted, primed and sealed. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260418/image/large-51cf50249cc0d30ead0ff0bbc84f77e0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260418">“Basically what we’re looking at is a new-build yacht in an existing shell. My reason for doing that is the exceptional quality of the hull, not only in terms of seaworthy design but also engineering and construction.”By way of example he points to the stainless-steel piping instead of galvanised metal or PVC, the 40mm of West African iroko decking, and the steel hull plates that are 10mm above the waterline and 15mm below (although not Ice Class, the hull is more robust than most explorer yachts). The extra-thick plates also mean there is no ‘washboard’ effect when the positions of the frames are visible as is often the case with thinner plating, especially when combined with poor heat management during welding. As the hull was stripped completely on the inside, the yard took the opportunity to remove any dents, an inevitable consequence of the vessel’s former life as a beam trawler (the ‘run rails’ welded to the hull served as protection from the heavy steel beams when deploying and retrieving the nets). <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/186704/image/large-365f81eb827adeff88362f4bd5632356.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/186704">All modifications had to be approved by RINA in order to bring the vessel into Class. The original trawler was rated at 570GT and an early priority was to bring the volume below the 500GT threshold, principally by creating more semi-open areas. Another major modification was cutting out sections of the hull and bulwarks amidships on both sides with steps leading down to water level, which actually increased hull stiffness as there is a steel box reinforcement under each staircase.&nbsp;The interior design by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a> is utilitarian, but also comfortable and not in any way sparse. In keeping with the vessel’s original design, extra windows or portholes are limited in size and framed in brass. High Pressure Laminate (HPL) panelling provides enhanced durability and impact resistance. Floating interior floors and low-frequency insulation serve to minimise noise and vibration. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260419/image/large-4bab6476d1f1f6b80312260f363886be.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260419">Maaskant Managing Director Eric Moerkerk showed us around a brand-new fishing vessel the yard had outfitted to give us an idea of what <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10859" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scintilla Maris 45.4m (148'11&quot;)Scheepswerf Maaskant 1988">Scintilla Maris</a> will look like when finished. Although below Dutch superyacht standards in terms of luxury materials, the high-quality finish was several steps above what you would expect to find on a working vessel.&nbsp;“We’re used to working with demanding commercial clients who require a high degree of flexibility,” says Moerkerk. “Owners and their reps are always here in the yard during construction requesting changes and we’re able to react to their needs. This is the nature of the fishing business today and that flexibility means we’re well prepared to handle conversion projects like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10859" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scintilla Maris 45.4m (148'11&quot;)Scheepswerf Maaskant 1988">Scintilla Maris</a>.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260414/image/large-ee06398dd29d70c784ae1c3b4a08326b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260414"> “A SUPER-SILENT, VIBRATION-LESS BEAST”By far the biggest upgrade is the hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system. Stricter emission regulations meant the initial intention to keep the original 4,400-hp <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1448" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Deutz AG (Company)">Deutz</a> MWM diesel engine, which was in excellent condition, had to be abandoned. Wabtech EPA T4/IMO Tier III engines, among the most technologically advanced and fuel-efficient medium-duty diesels, were also considered before settling on a hybrid DE system. &nbsp;Driving the single 3.4-metre Van Voorden propeller is a 2,000-horsepower electric motor (1300kW @ 1000rpm) supplied by Marelli in Italy that the owner refers to as a “super-silent, vibration-less beast.” The motor is custom-designed with two windings that effectively provide two motors of 650kW each wound on one stator, which can be energised individually or together for virtually any combination of normal motor speeds.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260408/image/large-f5fa5d4a66f21ca9c3ee0009b9c396d6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260408">The electric motor is coupled to a ZF Marine reduction box and three Volvo D16 IMO III gensets (586kW @ 1800rpm). The EST-Floatech Lithium-ion battery bank (2 MW) provides a further level of redundancy and is mainly used to run a full hotel load overnight without generators and for peak shaving, but they can also power the 110kW Marelli bow and stern thrusters for silent, emission-free, electronic anchoring. &nbsp; &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261481/image/large-d7fd8b61c1cecf54586a63582c013506.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261481">Maritiem Elektro Zeeland (MEZ), a tried and trusted local partner of Damen Maaskant, is the engineering firm responsible for integrating all the electrical installations, including the propulsion, power management, automation, navigation, communication, entertainment and lighting systems. The hybrid system based on an AC and DC (back-up) grid can be monitored remotely and basically provides four sailing modes: battery mode with limited power and hybrid mode with one, two or three diesel generators that are always running at constant loads. A Dynapilot system from Alphatron Marine and based on DP technology provides full navigational control in all modes via a single joystick. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261477/image/large-526305ff73094c1c4e0065008c41da68.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261477">Unlike modern yachts, two-thirds of the hull is below the waterline and the vessel has a 40-tonne keel. During the conversion weight has been added (including over 20 tonnes of batteries) in order to maintain the design draft. All this translates into a stiff rolling moment, which precludes the need for stabilising mechanisms beyond the original bilge keels. &nbsp;The general arrangement is still in the last stages of refinement, but when finished the yacht will be able to accommodate ten guests on the lower deck in four double cabins and a full-beam owner’s suite amidships underneath the original hatch into the fish hold (the former hold also provides immense space for storage and a good-size laundry). The main deck features multiple interior, exterior and semi-open areas for relaxation. On the bridge deck the open wheelhouse is enormous for the size of vessel and the owner has reserved the aft section as a private office. The main tender will be stowed on the sun deck aft and there is a viewing lounge forward overlooking the foredeck.&nbsp;“<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10859" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scintilla Maris 45.4m (148'11&quot;)Scheepswerf Maaskant 1988">Scintilla Maris</a> has been thoughtfully designed as a home away from home,” he says. “The purposing of spaces, the flow between them and the designation between the private and crew areas reflects that. I want to feel at home instantly and when stepping on board and specifically don’t want to feel like a guest in a hotel when on my own boat.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260412/image/large-52f95d726732c7afe779d9efb91ee2d3.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260412">ASK THE EXPERTSThe owner is well aware that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10859" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scintilla Maris 45.4m (148'11&quot;)Scheepswerf Maaskant 1988">Scintilla Maris</a> is a highly personal conversion project that is probably more suited to long-range voyages in northern waters than cruising the Côte d'Azur. But his business instincts also tell him that expert advice can make all the difference if he wants to commercialise his investment through chartering and eventual resale.&nbsp;So we were not the only ones visiting <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10859" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scintilla Maris 45.4m (148'11&quot;)Scheepswerf Maaskant 1988">Scintilla Maris</a>. He had also invited William Molloy, head of charter at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/808" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moravia Yachting (Company)">Moravia Yachting</a>; Roy Posthuma, charter and sales broker also with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/808" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moravia Yachting (Company)">Moravia Yachting</a>; and Pino Di Mora, senior project manager with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hill Robinson (Company)">Hill Robinson</a>. What followed was a lively and productive discussion about how the onboard amenities, especially the crew accommodation and services, could be optimised without incurring drastic changes to the existing layout. &nbsp; &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260413/image/large-4df9e25eb2d9ea5c97209b9722616c15.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260413">Some 16 years after her owner acquired her, the transformation of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10859" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scintilla Maris 45.4m (148'11&quot;)Scheepswerf Maaskant 1988">Scintilla Maris</a> from beam trawler into luxury yacht is on track to be completed by spring 2023, which must be something of a record for a conversion project.&nbsp;“This has been such a long project primarily because taking everything I learned, both the good and the bad, and translating that into something approaching a spec list for the shipyard took an enormous amount of time,” says the owner. “But it’s been an unusual privilege to be able to do this at the yard where the boat was actually built, where there are still a number of people that built <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10859" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scintilla Maris 45.4m (148'11&quot;)Scheepswerf Maaskant 1988">Scintilla Maris</a>. The unlikely conversion of the 45m trawler Scintilla Maris 

<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4369" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Team Italia (Company)">Team Italia</a> has been a leader in the integration and optimisation of navigation, telecommunications, security and data transmission for 20 years. The company has delivered over 500 bridges on yachts, more than half of which are custom integrated i-Bridge systems. We visit their headquarters in Livorno to take a closer look at the latest iteration.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259748/image/large-74e5156a3f798ef5c82f855ae65909d7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259748">The conversation of automation is not new, often facing opposition from captains and owners who raise concerns about the safety and security of digitalising navigation. Over the course of the past decade, however, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4369" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Team Italia (Company)">Team Italia</a> has been quietly developing software to improve safety and usability. Its fully integrated i-Bridge integrated touch bridge series both looks good and simplifies vessel control by centralising automation within one system.During the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/97" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2021">2021 Monaco Yacht Show</a> the company unveiled its latest iteration, the Dharma Next i-Bridge. The result of dedicated R&amp;D during the closure period of 2020-2021, the upgraded version of its award-winning series features an all-new HMI (Human-Machine Interface).&nbsp;This year 26 yachts will be delivered with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4369" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Team Italia (Company)">Team Italia</a> bridges, including the first Custom Line 140, the flagship of the series by the Ferretti Group, and the 13th Tecnomar for Lamborghini high-speed motoryacht, all of which are equipped with the integrated bridge system. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259746/image/large-1e92c12db03494c858fc64eabe936f80.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259746">IntegrationLike a standard bridge, the i-Bridge system is centralised at the helm station and operates the steering, propulsion and navigation of the vessel. However, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4369" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Team Italia (Company)">Team Italia</a> has integrated these functions with almost all other digitally operated systems aboard the yacht. For example, the i-Bridge is able to monitor and run diagnostic reports, offering the captain 3D diagrams of the systems that identify not only the issue, but also make recommendations for the solution.“Unlike a fixed bridge, the i-Bridge offers unified controls from any desired sector of the vessel, which means that the controls can be accessed from wherever they are needed,” says Massimo Minellla, CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4369" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Team Italia (Company)">Team Italia</a>. “Once a system has been integrated onto the control hub, the captain and crew can make a decision about where to view and control that system.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259742/image/large-24521af8e8341bf331c40b814f4a023d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259742">While many vessels feature a fixed glass or foil bridge configuration, they have a number of limitations. The mechanical integration of the yacht's control panel is often chosen during the construction of a vessel and therefore is specifically tailored to the original captain, owner or shipyard’s wishes.Should the vessel’s management be changed, the modification of a mechanical integration requires the complete reconfiguration of the control panels, which can be a hugely costly and timely process. Team Italia’s automated and touch screen i-Bridge allows for remote reconfiguration and the fully integrated nature of the bridge means that all systems can be operated from each panel, rather than a fixed order of controls, as with a mechanical integration. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259741/image/large-3276f9cc32e4ae30a642b6af16aa606d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259741">Safety FirstThe concept of digitally controlled mechanics has raised concerns in the industry over safety in case of faults and software issues that may lead to damages. While the system is digitally controlled, should issues occur with the control of the vessel the i-Bridge can be mechanically overridden. In the case of software related issues, the Team Italia engineers are able to run remote diagnostics and, if necessary, access the system and solve the problem without having to board the vessel.&nbsp;The obvious fears around the possible breach of privacy have also been assuaged. In order for a TI engineer to access the system they must follow a strict protocol and be admitted by the captain of the vessel. The digital system of the vessel is protected by a strong firewall, which prevents accessing any data unless explicitly permitted.&nbsp;“The advantage is that we’re able to continually update the software remotely, which is more cost effective than having to manually replace systems as with a fixed glass or foil bridge,” says Minella. “Moreover, should there be a specific fault, the onboard engineer can replace the part and we can remotely programme it.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259745/image/large-7f71cca46cb524e6529d358b43e83385.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259745">CustomisationThe i-Bridge system is entirely customisable. During the production process, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4369" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Team Italia (Company)">Team Italia</a> works alongside the yacht designers, shipyard and owner’s team to identify and make recommendations for the best solutions for each vessel, offering up-to four separate stations, which can be arranged as per the desires of the owner’s team.Once the specifications of the bridge have been determined, the system is pre-assembled at the testing facility in Livorno and the captain and owner is invited to test and trial the ergonomics of the setup. This allows for configuration development, both within the software and the stations themselves.&nbsp;Already turning its mind to the potential of augmented reality, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4369" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Team Italia (Company)">Team Itali</a>a is currently developing an AR system to aid in the operation of the technical spaces aboard vessels. The firm pivoted into the superyacht world when it supplied two Jacuzzi systems aboard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>’s 78-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3664" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Venus78.2m (256'7&quot;)Feadship2012">Venus</a> that launched in 2012. Since then it has worked with all the main Dutch and German shipyards.&nbsp;Stone Natural Class, a specialist in the production and installation of luxury stone products, was acquired in 2018. Bloemen de Maas, the supplier of bespoke exterior furniture, caprails and teak decking, joined the group a year later. Last but not, DTG is the group’s in-house innovations team that combines expertise from multiple disciplines with input from the sister companies. Under <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6974" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seable&Co (Company)">Seable&amp;Co</a>, these four original companies have been rebranded as SeableSpa, SeableStone, SeableWood and SeableStudio.&nbsp;Why is now the right time to rebrand as&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6974" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seable&Co (Company)">Seable&amp;Co</a>?It’s the last stage in a process that we’ve been building since the acquisition of Stone Natural Class and Bloemen de Maas. Together these companies share the same vision of craftmanship, innovation and collaboration, and we’re working on projects together more and more. It is now time to also evoke this shared vision and approach to our clients and the market and see our craftsmen operate as a true team. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/253369/image/large-74a3b525fd1509f3a1a75f703526cb6b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/253369">Your first superyacht project was little more than a decade ago, but you now have around 50 projects under way. How do account for this rapid expansion?After we started with Jacuzzis on board yachts, shipyards started asking if we were willing to take on a wider scope of responsibilities, including the stone, marble and mosaic work for both the exterior pools and interior spa areas. That led us to acquiring Stone Natural Class, which has worked with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen Yachts</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a> for many years. Our conversations with shipyards continued on a strategic level and as the exterior areas became more important and more complex, they asked us if we would take on a full exterior outfit. And that led to the acquisition of Bloemen de Maas, which has been working with top Dutch shipyards for the past 40 years.Where does DTG – now SeableStudio – fit into the equation?It was formed as an internal start-up to further boost our in-house innovation. We saw there were quite a few innovations within our companies that were not really taking off, so the idea was to nurture those innovations to the point where they would be able to enter the market successfully and then bring them back to the operating company. A good example is a product we’re developing as an alternative for natural teak. It’s based on 60 percent teak dust from the production of furniture made from plantation teak, which is then mixed with recycled resins and other additives. We also decided to add a UV stabiliser so the product keeps its colour rather than fading like natural teak, because that’s the main reason crews sand the decks. The end result is a material that is 90 percent natural or recycled, requires less maintenance, lasts longer and is applied with the same skill as teak planking. The whole development and testing process was much more manageable in a separate business unit.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/253371/image/large-ca3174832889702bdc45883339ed7169.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/253371">What proportion of your work comes through the shipyards or owners’ teams?I would say 90 per cent of our work is directly with the shipyards. But our exterior scope is high on the agenda for owners, to the extent that for some it might even the main reason they buy a yacht in the first place. In this context, we usually talk to the owner’s team at a very early stage together with the shipyard. Some owners’ teams even contact us before selecting the yard, but nine times out of ten the shipyard is our client. I spoke of collaboration earlier and I see a lot of potential for improvements in these relationships in terms of creating efficiencies. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6974" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seable&Co (Company)">Seable&amp;Co</a> was initiated by listening to clients and bringing together our different areas of expertise, whether it's exterior or spa spaces. Each of the group companies takes about 50 percent of their work from projects that require two or more of our core disciplines. The other 50 percent is still on an individual basis. I believe this is a healthy way of approaching the market that keeps every business unit very client focused. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/253370/image/large-01beae7244f77f91101472416246e9e2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/253370">How do you see the outfitting sector evolving, and&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6974" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seable&Co (Company)">Seable&amp;Co</a>&nbsp;along with it?We are experiencing quite rapid developments with bigger and more complex projects, but if you look at the industry a lot of the subcontractors in the industry have remained the same. You could argue that is a good thing and a sign they are competitive and in good health, but I'm not sure whether all of them can keep up with that complexity. Some companies are perhaps ahead of the curve, but there are far more smaller companies that are likely to have difficulty dealing with more complex projects in terms of contracts, project management, HR, the legal and financial side, and so on, which are all part of the industry growing and becoming more professional. This is the logic behind <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6974" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seable&Co (Company)">Seable&amp;Co</a>. By dealing with finance, HR and commercial strategy on a group level, we are basically providing a platform that helps deal with the complexity of projects on an operational level.As for the development of the market, we see designers, owners and shipyards continue to ask for new features and finishes on board. Recent examples include outdoor firepits, a custom DJ-booth, an outdoor cinema and artwall waterfall feature. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen Yachts</a> is a small but mighty Dutch shipyard, situated in the very heart of the Netherlands in Den Bosch; not your first guess for the location of a yacht manufacturer building superyachts up to 50 metres in length. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a> has been going strong for more than 40 years, and continues to build a steady stream of well crafted semi-custom superyachts that are rightfully stamped with the Dutch quality seal of approval. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208507/image/large-579f17b6a222c0d421a01f948e10dc62.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208507">One of the most recent additions to the yards portfolio is the 34-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a> 110, a gentleman’s style yacht with graceful lines that harks back to the successful <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a> 84 and 97 builds. Designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/241" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="René van der Velden Yacht Design (Company)">René van der Velden</a> and with naval architecture and engineering by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>, the vessel has a stellar pedigree. The first yacht of the new design, hull YN202, is now in-build on speculation with a May 2023 delivery date, and the yard has reconsidered its traditional construction methods, tying in experts across the field of yacht construction to streamline the build process and reduce lead times. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208509/image/large-7a940916e9268d24764f604349588c02.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208509">With facilities for the outfitting, carpentry and engineering onsite in Den Bosch, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen Yachts</a>’ hulls and superstructures have always been constructed at partner yards, but for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a> 110 the company decided to broach a new partnership. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5062" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scheepswerf Talsma (Company)">Talsma Shipyard</a> in Franeker, neighbouring Harlingen on the north east coast of the country, has a sterling reputation for its steel work. The hull of YN202 was built at the yard during the course of five months. Construction began in June 2021, utilising the traditional method of building upside down and turning the hull once complete. “At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5062" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scheepswerf Talsma (Company)">Talsma Shipyards</a> we always build our hulls upside down. This makes building easier, since the building floor and deck are both flat and it reduces the time spent working above the head,” the shipyard commented.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208510/image/large-319aa91f3b3c847a0825cc5e6103de36.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208510">It is also advantageous from an access perspective, allowing the team to reach and fabricate small spaces, welding from a downward direction rather than upward. The easier it is to construct and fabricate on a large scale, the faster the production process, and the completion of a 34-metre hull in only five months is no small feat, in a large part facilitated by the decision to build upside down. For Nick Tot, Naval Architect with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a> who manages the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a> projects, the main consideration with the construction process is that the team have a level deck to build on, accounting for the addition of the bulwark once the vessel is rotated. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208512/image/large-74ced01b78a8fa4ed392be010e4024b9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208512">Before the vessel is turned, stays are bolted to the keel of the hull so that when in sailing position, she is independently supported from the bottom. It then requires four cranes to synchronise the slow rotation of the hull, using straps to support it from each side to prevent it from overturning or flipping too quickly, which could cause major damage, both to the hull and to the surroundings.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208513/image/large-db1483928952873d50f698f0858ae6ce.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208513">In order to calculate the placement of the straps around the vessel, to ensure it doesn't pivot fore or aft, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana</a> calculated the weight of the hull and the centre of gravity, feeding that information to the crane drivers. For the entire team, this is a major milestone in the construction of the vessel, and also a cool event to witness; John Bechtold, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a>’s Project Manager of YN202 commented at the time “It is a very special moment to see the first hull of the new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a> 110 ready in her sailing position.” For the team, the turning represented a demonstration of the success of the collaboration between <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5062" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scheepswerf Talsma (Company)">Talsma</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a>, and the end to the first construction phase which had been an intense and instructive process.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208515/image/large-a846bd2d51e677f7e9e9fba026d99c98.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208515">Once the vessel was right-side-up, she was floated at the yard and transported to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a>’s facilities in Den Bosch and here <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana</a> once again stepped in. Nick Tot arrived on site to carry out the first inclination test for the hull, to ensure the original calculations were accurate for the weight displacement of the hull and superstructure. Tot explained how the inclination tests today very much resemble traditional methods. First the team measures the fore and aft draft to calculate the weight of the hull, then using weights on the deck which are moved from side to side, they can calculate the heel of the vessel using a very simple pendulum. The pendulum is made from fishing line or piano wire, a weight is hung from the end and then suspended in a trough of water and placed in the central line of the vessel. As the weights are moved across the deck, the team then records the deflection of the pendulum and uses that to calculate the heel. After the vessel is completed another final inclination test is conducted. “It is where theory and practice meet for us and of course the classification bureau is onboard with us during this final inclination test to ensure we are meeting the needs of the classification standards.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208758/image/large-cdf812ef628205af21450035715a40f8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208758">Once checked and approved, YN202 was then towed all the way south, joining the Meuse River, arriving in Den Bosch at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a> facility in December 2021. Here the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a> team quickly got to work with the priming and sandblasting of the steel, beginning the insulation of the hull and the loading of the engine room. During the construction of the hull, another Dutch shipbuilder was working on the construction of the aluminium superstructure. Like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5062" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scheepswerf Talsma (Company)">Talsma</a>, Willems Boven-Leeuwen is an expert in its field; aluminium construction. The partnership with Willems was also a new cooperation for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a>, and together the shipyards worked with DIANA to build the yacht's deck with the extrusion deck method, the first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a> to feature this new construction technique. With Willems situated just up river, the superstructure was built and arrived in Den Bosch shortly after the new year. In March the hull and superstructure were joined, yet another major moment in the build of the vessel. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/214860/image/large-43c09e7ec167cb838a57be86fe10b9d1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/214860">One might consider that these various players from across the Netherlands, all involved in one build, might be a case of ‘too many cooks in the kitchen’ but according to John Bechtold the reality is quite the opposite. “Imagine it instead as a collaboration of world-class surgeons. Of course we have to bring everything together and smoothly, but we looked for the best experts to build this vessel, like in an operation, not every surgeon can do everything, but you want the right person for the right job, and that is really what we have brought together for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a> 110.”&nbsp;Victor Caminada, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a>’s Head of Sales added, “The result has been a faster build, of even better quality because every element of the vessel has been developed by specialists.” &nbsp;There is a real sense of something new and exciting coming together with the build of YN202, and it is clearly a wave the shipyard is continuing to ride. Since the takeover by the current shareholder’s Matthew and Louise Baxter in 2019, the company is driving even more closely toward the creation of premium semi-custom superyachts, and YN202 is one of the first fruits of this labour. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/220649/image/large-7bcaf9e1ae3acc34348e86e82a1cd3af.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/220649">While the major stages of the yacht’s construction are now complete, the task turns to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a>’s own team to complete the works. On site the shipyard has an extensive carpentry and design facility who are currently building the crew quarters, ready to be assembled in the coming weeks. All cabinetry and built-in furniture is constructed by the in-house carpentry team, and they are now working closely with the designers for the construction of that fixed furniture. The team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen Yachts</a> also completes the paintings and installation of the entire interior, working closely with the architects to incorporate all of the clients specifications.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/220650/image/large-32a2e423a537687b88784f6ea0754683.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/220650">YN202 is currently on the market, and one thing the team are very capable of is the modification and adaptation of their hulls after purchase. An excellent example is the recent sale of the 37-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a> Martinique which was built on speculation. The owner came into the project late and requested a new interior design, as well as the lengthening of the vessel by more than a metre, major structural work. The team were able to design the new interiors and begin construction in only two months, demonstrating the ability to be adaptable to the owner’s wishes. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/220648/image/large-60850bda43047b2e6f82111803ccaaf6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/220648">The first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a> 110 will be launched in 2023, representing the very best of Dutch yacht building expertise.&nbsp;This article was originally published in&nbsp;<a href="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/news/superyacht-times-newspaper-issue-39" target="_blank">Issue 41 of SuperYacht Times newspaper</a>. During the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2021">Cannes Yachting Festival</a>, where the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4910" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sirena Yachts (Company)">Sirena</a> 68 was making her international debut, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4910" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sirena Yachts (Company)">Sirena Yachts</a> further announced it was diversifying into superyacht production. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4509" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuperYacht Times (Company)">SuperYacht Times</a> sat down with the new CEO to find out more. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/207814/image/large-bab590b20bf7a30c4191838b101c2ad4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/207814">You’ve been with the&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5271" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sirena Marine (Company)">Sirena</a>&nbsp;brand almost from the beginning. Was becoming CEO always part of the plan?&nbsp;You could say that in recent years that was where my career path was headed, certainly since I became COO in 2019. &nbsp;I joined <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5271" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sirena Marine (Company)">Sirena</a> in 2008, two years after the company was established and I worked first on the production side, then quality control, purchasing, sales and after-sales, and so on. I’ve worked in every department and seen the company develop, so today I know the brand and its products inside out.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/199554/image/large-911abe4382878a4dfefdc583f6e9803e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/199554">In what ways has the company developed? We grew our production skills building for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut-Benetti</a>, but because of contractual limitations we could build only sailboats under out own Azuree and Euphoria brands, not motor boats. Then the 2008 financial crisis came along and the market slumped. The idea had been to build around 150 units for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> each year, but we never reached that number. Both sides were affected financially so we were eventually able to renegotiate the contract and continue as a supplier, but also start up our own branded production of motor boats. We still build the Magellano 43 for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/63444/image/large-074423990115d0a983d64b011111584d.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/63444">What was your first motor yacht?The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4910" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sirena Yachts (Company)">Sirena</a> 64. We started the design development in 2013 with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/171" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="German Frers (Company)">German Frers</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/118" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Design Studio Spadolini S.r.l (Company)">Tommaso Spadolini</a>. We had the skill sets from working with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a>, but we were also able to draw on the know-how of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5271" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sirena Marine (Company)">Sirena Marine</a>’s parent company, Kıraça Holding, in the automotive and textile sectors. We launched the first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4910" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sirena Yachts (Company)">Sirena</a> 64 at the end of 2016, but we had the crazy idea that we wanted to present to the market not just one but two models, so we developed the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4910" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sirena Yachts (Company)">Sirena</a> 58 at the same time. The first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4910" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sirena Yachts (Company)">Sirena</a> 64 made her debut in Dusseldorf in 2017, where she was sold, and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4910" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sirena Yachts (Company)">Sirena</a> 58 premiered in Miami just after. The feedback from dealers and owners was very positive and we realised we’d found a sweet spot in the market.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/23337/image/large-03026347c12401fd827f5091437475de.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23337">How have your products developed since then?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4910" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sirena Yachts (Company)">Sirena Yachts</a> have always been based on superior interior volume and performance. The former is thanks to the hull form with a straight bow, which allows us to push the forward suite further forward and have a cabin almost as big as the master suite. Then you start gaining more space at the back of the boat as well and we calculate that our models have 15-20 percent more volume that comparable boats. It also helps that our hulls have a higher freeboard than usual, and we use carbon fibre in the superstructure to reduce the amount of material required and keep the centre of gravity low. The seakeeping and stability is thanks to the round-bilge hull, which is actually a hybrid design because it also has a chine for more speed. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/171" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="German Frers (Company)">German Frers</a> has been responsible for the naval architecture and exterior styling from the start. More recently, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/118" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Design Studio Spadolini S.r.l (Company)">Spadolini</a>’s interior layouts and design for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4910" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sirena Yachts (Company)">Sirena</a> 64, 68 and 88 have been revisited by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Rover Design (Company)">Cor D Rover</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/63445/image/large-d9d32e074ee4341d22cdcd83325cbe97.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/63445">And how have your processes developed?Our way of doing things is a bit different than other fibreglass builders. Over half of our personnel come from the automotive segment, our holding company’s core business and one of the most efficient and productive manufacturing sectors. This knowledge means we have a systematic, industrial approach that affects the decision-making process, quality control, how we use the jigs and move hulls around. For example, we’ve imported comprehensive quality control checklists used in the automotive industry so critical steps can’t be missed or forgotten. I would say this puts us ahead of head of many of our competitors.You’ve announced you’re going to start building superyachts over 30 metres or 100 feet. Is that market pull or push?Both. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4910" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sirena Yachts (Company)">Sirena Yachts</a> has reached a stage where we want to be able to offer our clients more choice. The idea is to have three new semi-custom models between around 30 and 50 metres in length and below 500 GT that will retain the design DNA of our existing fleet, which we’re also looking to expand with two new models, one between the 68 and 88 and another entry-level offering. We’ve just completed our internal briefing for the superyacht range and the next stage will be to ask our favourite designers to come up with concept proposals. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/199550/image/large-ae71d7de3861deff472e4af5a435d93f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/199550">Where will you build them and are you prepared to start the first on spec?We’re currently geared up to build smaller yachts at our facility inland, which is more cost effective. For larger yachts it makes sense to be close to the sea to avoid the issue of transport and we have a 10-year agreement with the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/14" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RMK Marine (Company)">RMK&nbsp;</a>shipyard in Tuzla, Istanbul, part of the Koç group, to rent 2,500 square metres of hangar space, but we’re also looking into opportunities to acquire a facility of our own with access to the sea. For sure we’re prepared to build the first hull on spec. The two biggest hulls will likely be in metal and the smallest in fibreglass, but this has yet to be finalised. I would probably go for the mid-sized model, which will have a good mix of superyacht features. Either way, we’ve promised our chairman that we will be ready to present the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4910" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sirena Yachts (Company)">Sirena</a> superyacht range in Monaco next year!
