Damen Yachting has been commissioned by an experienced owner to build a new custom 72-metre hybrid explorer yacht. Designed by Michael Leach and with an interior by the owner’s team, the construction of the yacht will be overseen by Burgess’ New Construction Team until she is delivered in 2024 in Vlissingen, the Netherlands.Photo: Damen Yachting
Designed for global cruising, the custom naval architecture by Damen Yachting includes a hybrid system that will allow zero-emission operations as the vessel explores some of the most pristine and untouched waters of our oceans. “This hybrid expedition vessel is an absolutely unique project,” says Damen Yachting Managing Director Rose Damen. “We are dedicated to developing more efficient propulsion and power management solutions for our clients, which are underpinned by an environmentally sensitive mind-set.”
The system runs off two main engines and hybrid PTI/PTO electrical drives that can propel the yacht up to 8 knots. This drive mode is backed up by a large battery bank for silence nights at anchor or in port, and stored power can be increased with containerised battery packs for extended silent operations in sensitive marine environments. In addition, the yacht will be completed with a full-synthetic teak deck as a more sustainable option to authentic teak wood. Photo: Damen Yachting
With a total gross tonnage of 1,440, the vessel is designed to be as adaptable as her cruising itinerary. Large deck spaces serve various functions and can be used for outdoor entertainment or for storage of tenders and toys. An on-deck swimming pool and an outdoor lounge on the upper deck aft sets the scene for a relaxing day at anchor and also carries the yacht’s 13-metre tender and 9-metre utility craft.
Edmund Beckett, Burgess New Construction said, “This project perfectly represents the seamless teamwork between the sales and new construction team within Burgess, and we are very proud and excited to continue this journey with the owner, Damen Yachting and Michael Leach Design.”
In addition to 12 guests, a total of 24 crew will be able to live aboard the yacht.
