British design student Daniel Humphreys, from Plymouth University has won the internationally recognised Abitare La Barca Concept Award design competition. Representing the UK, Daniel is the first British design student to have won this prestigious industry award.
The Abitare La Barca Award, now in its 6th year, was hosted at the sea technology and design event, Seatec held in Carrara, Italy this week. For the third year running an entrant from the UK attended the event to showcase their portfolio to industry representatives and compete on an international stage.
Daniel, a third year industrial design student, was provided with the opportunity to travel to Italy to compete with other design students at Seatec by winning the Superyacht UK competition.
The aim of the SYUK competition is to select a student that is currently studying a design orientated degree, to represent British design talent. Daniel was chosen by the design team at Design Unlimited for his creative ideas and high quality drawing skills and was announced at the recent Tullett Prebon London Boat Show as the UK design competition winner.
Daniel and the 11 other Italian students competed in the freehand drawing competition to design a completely dismountable boat of 3 -6 metres in length with entirely eco-friendly propulsion and using natural or recyclable materials throughout. Daniel was able to pull together his creative skills to overcome the opposition to win the Abitare La Barca Concept Award.
Presiding over the award, Professor of Industrial design, Marco Maiocchi said: “Daniel’s design was an excellent match among the constraints, with significant original solutions, with attention to detail to aesthetical values. It is rich in design details and excellent drawing execution.”
Toby Allies, Chairman of SYUK said: “I am delighted that Daniel has won this competition; it is a good sign for the future of the UK design industry when a UK student can win a prestigious competition in Italy. We hope he will follow a long line of illustrious British designers whose yachts can be seen around the world.”
