Reflecting on the origins of the Velarca 135 concept, Sami revealed that the idea emerged on a sunny day in August 2021 in Helsinki’s Kaivopuisto Park. Accompanied by an advertising agency and several bottles of champagne, the team were spurred by a bold vision. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242232/image/large-8fd4ddc1c0153b0949334960523201b4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242232">“We knew that motor yachts dominate the superyacht market with over 90 percent market share, which also means they produce most of the greenhouse gas emissions. So, we decided there and then to start selling sailing yachts to the motor yacht clientele,” Sami explained. This marked not only the birth of Velarca 135 but also the formation of a business model that would allow <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> to enter the superyacht market, without a designer or shipyard already in place.One of the cornerstones of the Velarca 135 design is sustainability, a principle that Sami was determined to uphold without compromising on luxury. “Sustainability is a tricky word,” elaborated Sami. “Many luxury products have a longer lifespan because they are valuable, beautiful, and timeless. When asked about the design process, Sami recounted the strategic decisions that guided the yacht’s development. “We consulted well-known yacht brokers in the Mediterranean to understand what their customers prefer in terms of yacht size and amenities. We also prioritised safety and simplicity, ensuring that even a less experienced crew could manage the yacht with ease.” The design was then handed over to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/164" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Beiderbeck Designs (Company)">Beiderbeck Designs</a>, who were given full artistic freedom. “In my opinion, the result was not only quite clever and practical, but also very pretty,” Sami added.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216494/image/large-d23ae9f9a161e73b660e7a5c5bafcac6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216494">The Isola Corvus vision and challengesAs a relatively new player in the superyacht industry, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> brings a fresh perspective, heavily influenced by Sami’s background in offshore racing. “We dared to do what we wanted without asking too many questions,” Sami explained, reflecting on the fearless approach that has driven the company forward. One significant innovation influenced by Sami’s racing experience was the rig design. “I was never a fan of the Chinese gybes, as the boom had the potential to cause damage or injury by slamming from side to side when jibing; so I wanted to eliminate the risks of this happening completely. The Velarca rig is simply a boomless, rope free, two masted solution, with two rolling and self-tacking jibs on each mast and a third jib in an inverted position between the two masts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216499/image/large-e6b6b2919ec59af2b44f6642ef4ec58f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216499">Despite their innovative spirit, the journey hasn’t been without challenges. “We didn’t have a designer or shipyard partner in the beginning, both of which are must-haves to even launch a design,” Sami admitted. However, a fortunate connection with Finnish superyacht hydraulics entrepreneur Nadine Proctor opened doors, leading to a partnership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/164" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Beiderbeck Designs (Company)">Beiderbeck Designs</a>. “By January 2022, the design was ready to launch,” Sami recalled. The next challenge was finding a suitable shipyard, a process that ultimately led them to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5728" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Knierim Yachtbau (Company)">Knierim Yachtbau</a> in Germany, known for their expertise in building lightweight sailing yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216493/image/large-b5f0be620cd828b3d8d58c4e1938e36a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216493">“Velarca is structurally more challenging to build than a motor yacht, so the shipyard must have experience in building demanding lightweight sailing yacht designs,” Sami explained. He also highlighted Knierim’s involvement in the wind power industry as an added benefit that aligns with their sustainability goals.&nbsp;However, marketing a yacht that blurs the lines between motor yachts and sailing yachts presents its own set of challenges. Sami remains optimistic that the industry will eventually create a new category for such crossover yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216498/image/large-29b199b0e1cba3a4051ab412d7aadfa4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216498">The future of sailingLooking ahead, Sami sees potential for the superyacht industry to follow the commercial shipping sector’s lead in adopting sail-assisted designs and alternative fuels like methanol. “The commercial sector can’t afford to over-engineer but seeks straightforward solutions to bring down emissions. The superyacht sector, however, seems more willing to experiment with alternative fuels,” Sami observed. He believes that the industry will eventually recognise the value of sailing and sail-assisted designs as viable solutions for reducing emissions.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> is already planning its next project, though details remain tightly under wraps. “Offering something different is paramount to us because we are still far from being a household name in this industry. With eight years of experience as a crew member on superyachts, he brings a fresh perspective focused on consistent growth, inspired by Sir Dave Brailsford’s ‘one percent philosophy.’&nbsp;“We strive for marginal gains of one or two percent, as even small enhancements can lead to significant progress over time,” he explains. INEOS’s recent part-acquisition of Manchester United has inspired MacManus to think more creatively in the department's day-to-day practices. “We can always do better, dig deeper, find more for our clients”This approach has shown promise, with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Partners International (Company)">YPI</a> reporting a 30 percent increase in revenue for their fleet of 13 superyachts this year-to-date, compared to 2023. To learn more about <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Partners International (Company)">YPI’</a>s growth and the unique strategies driving it, we spoke with Charter Manager Harrison MacManus, who attributes this success to bespoke and data-driven client service.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331230/image/large-c91f826fd52227fa19a68605d29a8828.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331230">Boutique and data-driven serviceMacManus notes that the company has undergone substantial changes over the past 18 months, signalling “a new reset in its culture and mentality,” with “a distinct startup mentality emerging.” His aim is to create a boutique experience, especially for larger yacht owners who feel overlooked by bigger firms. “We want to assure clients that they will receive our full attention. Reporting is essential for keeping our clients engaged throughout the entire process. Our primary focus is to consistently deliver value at every stage,” he emphasises.One key shift that has bolstered <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Partners International (Company)">YPI</a>’s charter division performance is the increased use of data and artificial intelligence. Beyond strategically enhancing business-to-business inquiries and leveraging AI to identify brokers with clients suited for the yachts they manage, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Partners International (Company)">YPI</a> team also provides data-driven insights on a weekly or monthly basis to the yacht owners they work with.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332052/image/large-b990f60f600875572b9909a5854d0e8c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332052">“We send market reports and inquiry updates to our clients on a weekly basis, keeping them informed about changes in the industry, price drops and new yachts entering the market,” says MacManus. Upon joining the company, he realised the importance of expanding the reports to all clients, rather than just a select few.“Providing these weekly or monthly updates adds value and demonstrates the service we offer. It’s not just about presenting an offer and a contract; we want to maintain contact and show our interest and care for their yacht. We aim not only to provide a strong revenue stream for our clients but also to share our marketing expertise. Consistent reporting helps clients feel valued and informed,” explains MacManus.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332064/image/large-94dfa085b9250823ce94c06a0dc7c228.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332064">Informed decision making in a tight marketThe reports are semi-tailored, covering inquiries, booking levels, and year-on-year comparisons, while collaborating with marketing to provide insights on trends and yacht promotion. This service also allows MacManus to assess clients’ commercial mindset by prioritising those who view their yachts as revenue assets, while permitting others to opt out of data updates.“This year, charter clients have been particularly price-conscious,” MacManus observes, underlining the need for owners to align their expectations with market realities. While many owners see their yachts as prime investments, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Partners International (Company)">YPI</a> focuses on providing accurate market data to facilitate informed decisions. Regular market reports are vital, as MacManus states, “They provide market knowledge and help owners understand when to adjust pricing or negotiate.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332066/image/large-57a93d2356d77113582e7cadca9e4e7a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332066">“We have helped our owners become more flexible and commercially oriented, largely due to our regular data updates,” he explains. Rather than suggesting arbitrary price cuts, MacManus stresses the importance of context and credible advice in navigating shifting market conditions. “By offering data and insights based on our historical knowledge, we ensure that our recommendations are informed and relevant,” he adds.Strategic and tailored marketing<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Partners International (Company)">YPI</a> has collaborated closely with its marketing team to refresh the fleet’s image, ensuring each vessel remains relevant in the evolving market. This has contributed to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Partners International (Company)">YPI</a> charter fleet revenue in the 20 to 35-metre segment surging by 185 percent this year-to-date, compared to 2023. In addition, yachts between 60 to 80 metres and above experienced a 69 percent increase.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332065/image/large-6e222907edd116c149efa17f57440543.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332065">MacManus attributes the notable increase in charter fleet revenue partly to a shift in owner mentality: “Owners are realising the need to reinvest in their products.” He cites a specific case where a yacht transformed its charter performance after adopting a cost-effective wrapping method, allowing significant aesthetic changes at a fraction of the traditional repainting cost.MacManus notes that, “these owner investments have been transformative, with the marketing team playing a crucial role in these improvements.” Indeed, “the previous marketing materials were inadequate for some yachts,” and new imagery to display the yacht’s features has played a crucial role in promoting them, particularly to a younger clientele. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332071/image/large-72f2d0be1711627190c08357a00a2253.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332071">The 35 to 60-metre segment experienced only a modest 10 percent increase, indicating intense competition: “There are simply too many boats in that range, and with more launching, competition will intensify next summer.” This highlights the necessity of a data-driven approach to tailor proactive marketing strategy.Looking Forward“Our fleet consists of only 13 boats, making every new client invaluable,” he adds. Over the past eight to nine months, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Partners International (Company)">YPI</a> has refined its marketing strategies, ensuring every lead is pursued vigorously. “We are relentlessly connecting with charter brokers and clients and gauging their interest. Owners wish to make a positive contribution to the environment by supporting research and even accommodating scientists for trips to the Antarctic and other regions. 3 things I learnt from the Monaco Yacht Show 2024

Since its establishment in 2015, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Charities (Company)">Superyacht Charities</a> has significantly donated to maritime causes, raising over €1,047,200 (£880,000). The third annual <a href="http://superyachtcharities.com/golf-challenge/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Superyacht Charities Golf Event</a>, approaching on 10 October 2024 in Palma de Mallorca. With it, the foundation is set to hit another milestone in its mission to blend philanthropy with industry gatherings. We caught up with Derek Munro, founder of the foundation to find out more.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289067/image/large-bfd03ba07a4adefd6e2afffd782e7d43.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289067">Superyacht CharitiesFounded by Derek Munro, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Charities (Company)">Superyacht Charities</a> began as a modest gathering of 150 guests in February 2015. By April, the event had grown to 350 attendees, prompting Munro to formalise the charity and leverage the yacht industry's collective influence. The foundation's flagship event, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Charities (Company)">Superyacht Charities</a> Ball, now attracts over 500 attendees annually.&nbsp;“We now run four annual events, which is quite incredible considering where we started and that all of our trustees who organise the events are volunteers and have their own businesses. The Superyacht Ball is the first event of the year, followed by the Seafarers Supper in Palma, then the Golf Event and finally the Antigua Sundowners on the first day of the Antigua Charter Show,” shares Munro. “Part of the reason for the number of events is that we have a lot of return attendees who consistently support one or two events in the calendar year, but we also want to appeal to a broader audience,” he adds.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289065/image/large-1a94aa05c477fb1d9ef7c8696428ee05.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289065"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Charities (Company)">Superyacht Charities</a>’ annual events are managed by volunteer trustees, who run their own businesses while supporting the foundation. Each event benefits two primary charities, receiving 33 percent of the donations each, with an additional 33 percent allocated to the foundation's Cash for Causes Fund. This year, €23,800 (£20,000) from this fund, along with contributions from a GoFundMe campaign, will aid relief efforts in Carriacou (Grenada) and Petite Martinique, areas devastated by Hurricane Beryl. The foundation’s efforts have already included providing a communication tower and contributing to infrastructure reconstruction.The foundation ensures that at least 90 percent of donations directly support charitable work. Beneficiaries are typically small, independent organisations focusing on maritime causes. Initial support went to Sail for Cancer, now a larger entity, while current beneficiaries include JOYRON, aiding children in the Baleares, and Oarsome Chance, supporting young people with special educational needs. Lizette Van Niekerk, a former UK Charity Commission member, plays a crucial role in vetting these charities.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289063/image/large-f88ab102ba1aabb771fd7aa030145483.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289063">Palma Golf Charity EventFollowing the success of the 2023 event, the Superyacht Charities Trustees have made the golf event a permanent fixture. The <a href="http://superyachtcharities.com/golf-challenge/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">2024 Superyacht Charities Golf Event (SYCGE)&nbsp;</a>will take place on Thursday, 10th October 2024 at Golf Son Quint, in Palma de Mallorca.“We have 140 players out on the green over the course of the day, playing in pairs with the first group setting off at 8AM. The second group will begin after lunch, which is a Spanish style tapas meal served at the golf course,” shares Munro.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/295206/image/large-197ba6f0bd501727bfcd9fc07e9406a9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/295206">“Throughout the day there will be a bar open at the club, with two additional bars on the green itself, as well as a coffee buggy driving around serving coffees and espresso martinis,” he adds. In the evening there will be a Spanish style barbecue, with DJ music and drinks at the club. It is spread over five offset decks, creating spaces with particularly airy volumes that connect to the outside, while minimising partitions and barriers. The result is a number of unique spaces with a spacious saloon to aft and a dining area amidships arranged across two levels. This disruptive internal architecture is, however, imperceptible from the external profile. The yacht’s exterior maintains a clean and essential line, in perfect <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> style.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/78" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lissoni & Partners (Company)">Piero Lissoni</a>’s interior perfectly complements the unique deck system. The design team has reinvented classical elements in a contemporary fashion, utilising coffered ceilings and dark wooden walls to imbue the space with an elegant atmosphere. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321816/image/large-49219955f822e58fa468b9e74891ae01.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321816">Unprecedented Interior SpacesEach of the five interior decks are arranged on two levels, creating a horizontal axis of spaces which is a significant diversion from the traditional vertical deck arrangement. The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> team has employed large glass surfaces throughout the interior to interconnect the spaces with each other, and with the surrounding environment. The introduction of this alternating high and low concept is a unique feature of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11733" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Almax49.99m (164'0&quot;)Sanlorenzo2024">Almax</a>. It creates an effect of expanded onboard spaces that communicate with each other with minimal steps. This generates a naturalness in movement onboard, continually revealing new perspectives of the surrounding waters. Incredibly, the redistribution of interior spaces has no impact on the yacht’s exterior design, which remains sleek and elegant. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321817/image/large-64190d04e9019af259cc3088cdf4f831.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321817">The DecksFrom the aft, the superyacht’s guests are welcomed by the Ocean Lounge, which features three terraces, opening when at anchor to create a 135 square-metre beach on the water. This huge deck is home to a large swimming pool, to the aft of which is the swim platform, giving guests the closest possible connection to the ocean.&nbsp;This impressive terrace leads through to a large full-beam saloon called the Beach House, with steps leading up to the dining area. The stairs connecting the internal spaces are flanked in glass, allowing light to flood from the large floor to ceiling windows, throughout the decks. This feature also helps to connect the unique areas, such as the gym and spa on the lower deck, to the second saloon on the main deck.In addition to the Beach House and spa area, the lower deck is home to two VIP and two double staterooms, which can be configured as either doubles or singles, both with Pullman beds. The entire lower deck, both in the lounge and stateroom areas, is characterised by a uniform colour palette &nbsp;and material consistency, with dark wood for ceilings and panelling contrasting with the light-coloured flooring. However, in the sleeping area, the vertical cladding is treated with light wood to enhance the light coming through the vertical portholes.From the lower deck, guests are led up the stairs to the main onboard living areas, with the saloon and dining room. Like the Beach House, the main deck saloon is surrounded by ocean views, with glass doors leading out to the aft deck, enhancing the connection to the yacht’s environment. Looking to the fore from the main saloon, the view through the yacht meets the dining room, located on the lower level on the main deck. The dining area is exceptionally designed, with a 3.7 metre ceiling height and visual perspectives to both the Beach House on the deck below, and the main deck saloon, out to the sea beyond.&nbsp;The main deck is also home to the full-beam owner’s suite, which has been decorated in a unique aesthetic with Japanese-style screens, dark wood walls and wallpaper. The master suite features two dressing rooms at its entrance, as well as a large ensuite bathroom. To the fore of the master suite is the yacht’s garage, housing a 7-metre tender, two jet skis, and the water toys. In this section of the deck, the Fuel Cells, the innovative technology powering the yacht’s hotel services with green energy, are also housed.The upper deck, which is accessed via an internal staircase, is home to both the yacht’s wheelhouse and a spacious deck to aft with an al fresco dining area and lounge. This deck has been designed with glass windbreak panels, which will allow the deck to be closed off in cooler climates, allowing guests to enjoy the outside no matter the weather.&nbsp;The final space aboard the yacht is the sun deck, featuring 360-degree panoramic views. How do you future-proof an AV/IT system?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond Technology Management</a> has a fundamentally different perspective than an integrator, as our position working directly for yacht owners means we can drive the specification to ensure systems are future proof. Integrators must bid on specifications, we write them.On a more specific level, we’re always looking 10 and 15 years ahead to make sure the systems we design are future proof, with many completed vessels being the living historical proof that we have been doing it right. Our job often means helping customers to avoid being penny wise and pound foolish when it comes to infrastructure planning. Additionally, we are encouraging yacht owners to simplify and streamline their systems so that long-term maintenance and operational costs are reduced. Starlink was the lynchpin we were waiting for to fundamentally re-invent the onboard AV/IT systems we tailor to owner needs.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/322599/image/large-a561ce10bcb309cc0cab486ec60e95a9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/322599">AV/IT systems are complex and costly. What is your advice for project managers or owners' reps tasked with choosing an integrator and speccing a system?&nbsp;We respectfully challenge the assumption that AV/IT systems must be complex and costly. &nbsp;There is a clear trend towards simplification which we at bond are leaning into, and it is possible today to simultaneously shrink systems and future proof them. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Returning to the question, one should first make sure a good team is creating the system specification packages. If you are considering bringing expert consultants onto your team like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond TM</a>, then scratch the surface to ensure their merit and avoid cronyism. It takes time to build a good specification, and cutting corners at early stages can be costly in the end.Next, there has been a downsizing trend in the last decade which has allowed us to return space back to the interior, but it relies on good communications with the owner in terms they can relate to. If you ask an integrator or anyone really who doesn’t know the client, you will get over-spec’d systems containing everything plus the kitchen sink. However the systems we’ve been working with our customers to specify are smaller, cooler and more capable than those of the past, because customers today are rejecting a lot of the complexity which in the past was under-utilised or never used at all. &nbsp;Armed with a solid specification, one can then of course go to tender. If done right, you will get good apples to apples offers, and you can select your suppliers based on price and compliance to specification.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/322598/image/large-1cc1724a3788481a08127e53899b4a72.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/322598">Some superyachts now have a full-time ETO (Electro Technical Officer) on board. Generally speaking, is there sufficient training for crew to run and maintain the AV/IT systems properly? A well trained and knowledgeable crew will always make the guest experience onboard better, zero doubt. For over a decade, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a> has offered a variety of technical and cyber training courses to help crew enhance the skill set they bring onboard.Furthermore, our push to simplify and streamline the AV/IT systems means that these systems simply cause fewer headaches for the crew to begin with. The interesting caveat however is IT system administration. Switches and Wi-Fi over the next decades will always be required, as will the need for IT specialists who are experts in keeping the network secure and performant.Our Support Services group has been delivering expert technical assistance to crew for over 15 years, exactly to reinforce the crew and ensure they have access to all skills necessary to keep their yacht running smoothly.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/322165/image/large-9baeaf85af25d3b0b9d19bf5328f94bf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/322165"> In an increasingly connected environment, how important is it to have a cybersecurity management plan when designing an onboard IT system?A Cyber Security Management Plan is a vital operational matter that crew must attend to; it is not a tangible thing one can design into a system or pay cash up front for. If experts have designed the IT system to adequate standards using sound best practices while not cutting important corners, then it will be possible to operate it safely and securely. However a system packed with the most exotic security technologies in the world will amount to nothing if it gets hacked due to being operated and maintained incorrectly, or because the crew was not trained adequately to understand and avoid cyber threats.If the worst does come to pass and there is a cyber incident onboard, the crew need to have a good plan they can follow to ensure they immediately do the right things to mitigate harm and/or loss, while quickly bringing the vessel back to a secure state. This is what good cyber policies and plans can do.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a> serves the Cyber needs of yachts at every level. Our build management group ensures systems are designed and delivered to robust standards. &nbsp;Our service and support group maintains those systems at a secure state and helps crew to craft world class cyber policies that are well tailored to their needs. Lastly, our training team routinely conducts Cyber Awareness courses for entire crews to help everyone level up their operational security. Daily vigilance is needed in the face of the threats out there, and a well-prepared crew is the first and best line of defense. Fast connectivity at sea can be elusive. Are 5G, Starlink and other low earth orbit satellites taking over from traditional VSAT technology?This is not elusive any more since virtually every yacht on the sea has already installed Starlink. This constellation of satellites has fundamentally changed everything. Since 2014 when Greg Wyler and Elon Musk first started planning a Low Earth Orbit constellation called WorldVu, and when O3B went online, we have been preparing our customers to be ready for low and medium earth orbit systems. &nbsp;We are therefore proud to have had SpaceX as a guest on our stand at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2022">Monaco Yacht Show 2022</a> when they first launched their marine service.It’s not nice to hear for legacy providers, but the fact is that conventional VSAT is now only a backup service, and one that will be in decline for the next decade. On the new-build side, we are now working on the first generation of yachts that will not have any large satellite radomes, resulting in a stunningly sleek exterior. &nbsp;Some in the industry made mistakes over the last decades, recommending unripe technologies that were obsolete before they were even installed. However, we at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a> steered our clients to avoid this error and can today assure anyone reading this that those days are over.Internet at sea is now abundant and more affordable than ever, and as more services come online to complete with Starlink in the next years, it will only become more so.AV/IT upgrades are commonly requested during refit or maintenance periods when time is limited. What do crew and shipyards need to be aware of? Firstly, if the vessel has good infrastructure (quality ship run cabling, well built and cooled technical racks, etc..) then absolute refit costs will be much lower over time. It costs a bit more upfront to build good infrastructure, but it pays off in savings *forever*, while increasing the longevity and reliability of all systems. &nbsp;Therefore, if the vessel’s infrastructure is poor, with intermittent faults and outages, overheating equipment, etc.., it may be a wise long term investment to improve said infrastructure. It might not provide any new flashy capabilities for guests, but it can pave the way for more robust and affordable systems in the long run.Next, to get the best prices and ensure a smooth refit period, start developing your scope of work early and be realistic. Instead of trying to do everything at once, we have seen a trend with several customers whereby they prefer to develop an evolutionary upgrade strategy for their vessel with us. By breaking the upgrades into discrete chunks of work, it can result in lower costs and higher quality outcomes which don’t require the vessel to be out of service for any one long block of time.Lastly, logistical aspects such as hardware lead times, labor logistics and access to refit shipyards should not be underestimated. When these things go wrong they can cripple a refit, so they are best considered well in advance. &nbsp;&nbsp;

For our latest Entrepreneur in Yachting feature, Francesca Webster sits down with her friend Mariangela Oliveri to discuss her luxury linens business <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a>. Established in 2011, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> has evolved into one of the premier sustainable linen companies for the yachting and aviation sectors over the past decade. We explored its inception, the challenges Mariangela faced in establishing a sustainable business before sustainability became a trend, and her conviction that quality and service are the keys to success in the superyacht industry.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331994/image/large-c16f54ec63cb14a14d02590c1d28c25c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331994">What was the origin of the business and what is your background?&nbsp;Throughout my business degree my goal was to set up a company within the realm of luxury materials so I approached every class during my five year degree as an opportunity to develop the business plan. In fact, the original concept for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> was the final essay at university, so although the company was founded in 2011, it had really been with me for years before then.&nbsp;After university, I decided that before establishing my own business, I needed to learn how to work within a team and to grow in practical experience. It felt presumptuous to assume I had all the answers without appropriate training, so I joined a company in Asia for five years importing luxury furniture design manufacturers. During that time I learnt how to work with different people, from various backgrounds and cultures and it taught me the skills that you need in order to manage your own team and your own clients. It was an incredible learning experience and gave me the opportunity to work in a varied and complex environment, and after five years I returned to Italy and began the research process for the business. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331999/image/large-21757ca123fc9e37a78d60e699868147.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331999">Why did you decide to focus on high-end, sustainable linens?&nbsp;I’ve always had a deep passion for quality and for me Italian linen is the supreme material with an amazing heritage, however the sustainable approach was not in my original concept. I wanted to offer the lineage of linen with a modern twist, but I didn't yet know what that twist was. I am an observer by nature and when I returned from Asia in 2011 sustainability was beginning to become mainstream, with eco foods in supermarkets for example and the demand was increasing . Sustainability was also becoming a buzz word in the media and I could see that it would only increase in significance, so I decided that founding the business with a truly green heart would set <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> apart from the rest of the market. That is when the struggle really started.At that time it was impossible to find refined sustainable fabrics. Everything on the market was rough and completely unsuitable to luxury linen products. That was a period of frustration and of almost giving up because once I'd set my heart on the sustainable element of the business there was no way that I was going back. It became absolutely central to my belief in the company.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331998/image/large-5f21af1057a168c58caf722e89ffeb08.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331998">How did you overcome that hurdle?I met with the owner of Italy’s largest fabric producer, and after an eight hour meeting managed to convince him to invest in a certified sustainable production line. He said, “If I can't convince you to change your mind about this approach in eight hours, you must be able to see something I haven't seen yet, so we will try it.” That was an amazing moment. Two years later, he had certified the entire production line of the company and had become one of the first sustainable fabric suppliers in Italy.&nbsp;So your investment in creating the business sustainably delayed the foundation of the company – why did it become so important to you?The answer is twofold. The first is ethical, but the second was strategic. I could foresee that sustainability would become an important factor of businesses in the future and fortunately reality has shown that my instinct was right. The decision to create a certified business from the ground up also means that everything we do is done in a sustainable way – our materials, work standards and business practices are routinely reviewed to ensure that we are maintaining the certified standards. When I see companies today launching ‘sustainable lines’ I know that it is greenwashing. You cannot be sustainable in one collection, it is a hypocrisy, either you believe in it and practise it throughout your business, or it is a gimmick to sell your products.&nbsp;What are some of the challenges you’ve faced since establishing the business?Well, aside from the initial challenge of finding the suppliers, we have faced many challenges in the past 13 years. Our first line was a kids bed linens collection because I thought mothers would be sensitive to the sustainability aspect, but it really didn't go as expected. I invested a lot of money and almost went broke. I realised that the market wasn’t ready for the sustainable topic to be the main focus of the business, so I developed the business model focusing on the concept of Italian quality, with an international service approach.&nbsp;Italian’s make wonderful products, and Made in Italy still carries a lot of weight internationally, but Italian companies are not good at marketing, customer service etc. So I decided to focus a lot of investment in our service offering, utilising my international experience to create something different and that is how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> came to the yachting industry, where quality and service are most recognised.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332000/image/large-90fdc1caae0a58aa21af956ebab21436.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332000">When did yachting linens become the focus of the business?In about 2013 we decided to approach the yachting sector, making our first sales in 2014 and pulling the company out of some challenging financial times. Then things progressed quickly because we secured <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut-Benetti</a> as one of our first clients. In fact when I went to Benetti to pitch our business, they had an array of linen suppliers on show, but by the end of our meeting we had secured our position as the exclusive supplier for the shipyard and that really established our relationship with the yachting sector.&nbsp;What do you think they saw in your products? What set&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a>&nbsp;apart?The quality of every single detail. Every piece that carries our label is checked by hand right down to the stitching because I want my team to be proud of every piece. We will take as long as it takes for it to be perfect and I think that sets us apart from other companies. I have a huge amount of respect for Hermes, which I believe is the only true example of true luxury brand. They continue to make their bags by hand, they aren’t interested in speed or numbers, they are focused on quality and that is my focus for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331993/image/large-f12efeba8de238fae187efa8cfdede06.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331993">How have you maintained that level of control and what do you think are some of your keys to success?With a lot of saying no. The success of a brand is more in the no’s than the yes’s. We’ve been approached by retailers offering display space, but you will never find <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> products on the shelf, we’ve also been approached to create products for under famous brands. Our know-how is precious to me and we will never supply our products under someone else’s label.The company is also completely self financed, so there are no investors telling me to cut budgets and increase production at the sacrifice of quality. I will make no compromises and that is really important to who we are. I also think that the most important thing when you’re an entrepreneur is that you involve everyone in your dream. From your suppliers, to your employees, you have to make them believe and in order to do that, you have to truly believe in yourself and in what you're doing. A few months later, Sami phoned Sanna-Kaisa with an idea to design their own yacht through their shared passion of changing the market and making a difference.Through intense market research they found that 90 percent of the market is for motor yachts, but there was room for a specific kind of sailing yacht that would target both the sailing and motor sector. “We wanted to bring a better, more environmentally friendly alternative to the yacht market, in order for us to make sure the next generations get to experience and enjoy the wonders of the seas as well,” said Sami Lehtonen.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242234/image/large-51b335bc454fd0d4239d88589eae3888.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242234">The result was the 41-metre sailing yacht Velarca 135 that combines luxury with style and most importantly, takes into account the growing demand on sustainability. “We contacted the German superyacht designers <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/164" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Beiderbeck Designs (Company)">Beiderbeck Designs</a> and pitched the idea of creating something radically new for the market, and they were keen to get involved,” said Sami.&nbsp;When the idea was first introduced, Immo Lüdeling and Tim Ulrich of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/164" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Beiderbeck Designs (Company)">Beiderbeck Designs</a> started sketching almost immediately with a design that would focus on the reduction of emissions, while increasing sustainability. “We saw that no one had achieved this before, and we knew that we had to be the ones to make that change,” comments Sanna-Kaisa Koivisto. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216496/image/large-bb4330af290da5a641aa42e67a6508a8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216496">It was crucial that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> created something new, “being different is the key, you don't need to fight against the giants to be successful,” remarks Sami. “We wanted to be the forerunners for the industry and create a yacht that people can enjoy on the waters in a more eco-friendly way” added Sanna-Kaisa.Unlike conventional sailing yachts, Velarca 135 offers two decks and is aimed at owners who are traditionally interested in motor yachts. Even though the nature of Velarca is clearly a cruising yacht, the hull shape, keel and the rudder are the latest available technology from offshore racing circuits.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216498/image/large-29b199b0e1cba3a4051ab412d7aadfa4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216498">The sailing yacht concept Velarca 135 also draws upon some key features that are usually only seen on motor yachts. Velarca 135 has a streamlined, motor yacht like profile featuring a very large beach club at the stern, something that is rarely seen on sailing yachts. “We wanted her to have this feature as it targets the motor yacht clientele and offers something different to the sailing sector of the market,” Sami points out.&nbsp;The expansive beach club provides a stylish lounge area as well as a very large swim platform with additional space for living and entertaining. The area also includes a central Jacuzzi to expand her outdoor facilities. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216493/image/large-b5f0be620cd828b3d8d58c4e1938e36a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216493">When underway the yacht's tender can be stored on the swim platform, while additional tenders and toys can be stored on the foredeck. Designed for families, the team has added a lift to the front bulkhead of the beach club, making it easy and safe to access all decks, even for those with disabilities.Velarca 135 also has a completely new kind of rig with three self-tacking and hydraulically furling jibs. The result is a rope free rig that doesn’t require a large crew to operate and reduces the risks associated with high loads on the sheets. “Her decks are safer, simpler and allow for someone with little or no experience to easily manage her,” adds Sami.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216499/image/large-e6b6b2919ec59af2b44f6642ef4ec58f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216499">The team has also made sure that Velarca 135 has a low centre of gravity “when we spoke to motor yacht owners, one of the main goals was to make sure that she doesn’t heel too much,” notes Sanna-Kaisa. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> is currently in talks with shipyards regarding the production of the sailing yacht Velarca 135 and are keen to make the concept a reality. “We are happy with the progress we have made with the project and we are looking forward to making it across the finish line and into production” adds Sanna-Kaisa. “We have a lot of ambition and we want to change the industry by making this possible. We want to inspire others and let them know that, when you have a good idea and great partners, you can achieve anything.”
