Boasting one of the most enviable city locations anywhere in the superyacht world, and in a vibrant and cosmopolitan hub such as Barcelona at that, it is no wonder that OneOcean Port Vell is fast becoming one of the most popular yachting destinations in the Mediterranean. With the pulsating and diverse centre of Barcelona as a backdrop, and a team of welcoming, caring and tentative staff as a shop front, OneOcean Port Vell has everything to offer superyachts and their guests who decide to make this yachting haven their next stop over destination. In this feature we take a look at what makes OneOcean truly one of the top superyacht ports in the Mediterranean.
It is during a beautifully sunny Spring-like day in early March that we visit the port and its facilities. World-class mooring and support facilities aside, I cannot help but feel it is this year-round pleasant weather that might be a contributing factor to the large number of yachts that have decided to make OneOcean Port Vell their winter port of choice. But how do they cater to this increasing number of superyacht traffic? Chairman of OneOcean, Martin Bellamy explains: “The exceptional results achieved in one year after launching OneOcean Port Vell have allowed us to move swiftly to commence the works for the last stage of the marina’s redevelopment. Already at 80% capacity this winter, this expansion enables us to meet the growing demand for berthing superyachts in the Mediterranean and positions Barcelona as the leading superyacht destination with unrivalled marina facilities.”
Having undergone a multi-million dollar transformation project backed by London-based owning company Salamanca Group, the final stage of construction at this superyacht metropolis is now nearing completion. Once finished ahead of the summer cruising season, a new quay will see another eight berths catering for yachts ranging from 30 metres to 80 metres, raising the marina’s overall capacity to over 190 vessels, capable of receiving yachts from from 5 metres to 190 metres in length.
According to General Manager Paul Cook, half of the port’s activity occur between the busy summer months of June and August, with August accounting for 436 visits alone. Cook attributes this busy period to the port’s ideal location that serve as an ideal guest pick-up and drop-off point with excellent provisioning services on offer to make charter turnarounds as seamless as possible. The proximity of destinations such as the Balearic Islands to the south, Monaco and the rest of the Cote de Azure to the east, and Gibraltar to the west, Barcelona is never out of reach of some of the most iconic superyacht destinations.
The port’s upcoming focus, Cook continues, is the much anticipated Barcelona Formula 1 Grand Prix that takes place in May. The event sees the entire marina be transformed into a bustling hub of activities that bring together the lavish lifestyles of professional race car drivers and that of luxury yachting. Plans are already in place to convert side-to dockages into stern-to moorings to accommodate the influx of visiting yachts over the period of the F1 event.
Guests however have much more to look forward to than the world-class mooring facilities and tight round-the-clock security that is being offered as standard. The OneOcean Club is an elite location within OneOcean Port Vell where superyacht owners and guests can enjoy exquisite seasonal Catalan dishes prepared with a twist. In addition to the ultra modern and relaxing restaurant, complete with summer deck and winter terrace, the Club is home to the award-winning BlueWave Cocktail Bar where guests can unwind with a wonderful view over the city waterfront and high profile yachts moored to the Spanish quay.
Inevitably, the city’s call becomes all too apparent, and so does the urge to explore one of Europe’s coolest hubs. The prime location of the port means that the winding cobblestone streets of Barcelona is found just beyond the facility’s security gates. This allows guests to enjoy care-free wanders through the variety of suburbs surrounding the city centre. An alternative to walking or cycling, for which the city is perfectly suited to, the more adventurous guests can opt for a more thrilling way of getting around. Drive Me Barcelona offers guests the opportunity to explore the city and beyond in style and luxury while driving any one of their range of hyper cars, including Ferrari’s, Lamborghini’s, Maserati’s, Porsche’s and McLaren’s.
Not only suited for superyacht owners and guests, captains and crew will soon find that OneOcean Port Vell is a step above most superyacht marinas found across the world. Wellness facilities such a high-tech gym and spa means that a quick escape from the yacht is always possible. In addition, the marina’s partnership and close proximity to the MB92 shipyard is another advantage. This year OneOcean Port Vell was able to extend all the benefits of the TPA tax free scheme to yacht owners berthed at the marina during their stay and has become one of the few European marinas where the VAT exemption can be granted, offering a substantial advantage for owners undertaking maintenance works.
