Can you give us some insight to what is involved?Hull form design can range from the simple to the complex in any vessel, superyacht or otherwise. How simple or complex one makes it really depends on the driving aims of a number of outcomes that need to be achieved in the final design. These typically include propulsive efficiency, comfort (seakeeping), construction considerations and practical alignment to the design intent of the overall vessel / its functionality. It is possible to address all of these in a simplistic manner, or equally with a high degree of engineering effort. Also, in the real world of commerce, time, budget and other resources play a role.In general, for a superyacht there is no one overall factor that dominates to the detriment of others. Some projects have a bias one way or another, but achieving an optimised result that delivers the very best result across all of these outcomes demands a rigorous process. Whilst not complex per se, it requires a high degree of insight via experience and grounding in a clear strategic approach to leverage the best result, when set against real-world commercial constraints.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325411/image/large-824189ecde9fb6967bcd09e46988355a.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325411">It must be daunting to start with a blank sheet of paper, where do you even begin?Any notion of a blank sheet of paper is a misnomer. While every project results in a unique hull form that is specific to that design, one’s ability to optimise quickly, effectively in terms of results and with low technical (and therefore commercial) risk, means that we always begin via examination of our hull form family. By family I mean the many hulls that have been tested and / or proven in service, and the accompanying insight derived from the experience in their development. For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a> that spans about thirty years of development reaching back into our heritage in specialised commercial vessels as well as superyachts. Marry to this a collaborative approach in development, with an experienced shipyard partner(s), and also model test institutions, the sum of the collective knowledge that can go into a new hull form is potentially very significant.&nbsp;It would be easy to select a ‘parent hull’ and simply manipulate and develop to achieve a good result on a new project, that is a fairly straightforward process. We take a more strategic approach aimed at the progressive development of a hull form family. That progressive development ensures that we are, over each successive generation, investigating, pursuing and employing technical developments that embody an engrained evolution of knowledge, data driven outcomes, and insight.There are exceptions to this. In more ‘blue-sky’ projects where novel or experimental fundamental technology is being explored then a ground up approach where you “challenge everything” is taken, but this is not suitable for conventional projects.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325412/image/large-7cf075d26588c70a0a160061ddd73616.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325412">In this evolutionary approach could the use of Artificial Intelligence and other computational methods be employed?The short answer to that is yes. The advancement of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) over the last half century (yes that long) has meant that the exploration of strategic evolutions has become faster, more reliable and more cost effective, certainly in the regime of propulsive efficiency. It has advanced the state of the art into progressively smaller steps because the state of the art is now very mature. The use of other computational methods encompassed by AI have and are bringing a new dimension to the state of the art. Ultimately they will serve to enable us to find new innovations, which in a mature state of the art environment, become progressively more demanding in time and resources to find. I personally think the real task for any AI, is to challenge the biases and paradigms that are an inherent part of being human. AI can help challenge and expand these paradigms by presenting data-driven perspectives that may differ from traditional viewpoints, potentially leading to innovative solutions and advancements. I do not prescribe to the idea that AI will make the human redundant, it will accelerate our abilities and augment our creativity.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325410/image/large-b2b16fcaaaffa7251bf58f189c4dc3bd.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325410">How would you describe&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a>'s hull form family and what developments are you working on?Our family is broad and diverse, and whilst it has a core focus on large displacement hulls, it also encompasses smaller families with different areas of focus, leveraging much from our heritage in other marine markets.&nbsp;Central to the family tree is our ‘Type-D’ series, now in its 10th generation with one keel of over 110m currently under construction. From that central family other variants are in development for different areas of the market in which we are active, our ‘Type-De’ series, specifically optimised for the use of azimuthing thruster propulsors (pod) with one keel over 110-metre currently under construction and a 130-metre in development. Our Type-L family addresses a smaller region of the market, namely the sub-85 metre load line in the 80/90 metre range, with the latest 80 metre variant having its keel laid this summer. All of these families have evolved around a blended optimisation of efficiency and comfort, adapting for progressive improvements in propulsor and stabilisation technologies.Our Series-UE (Ultra Efficient), as was initially created to underpin the LIFE platform upon which the 109-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5963" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bravo Eugenia109.0m (357'7&quot;)Oceanco2018">Bravo Eugenia</a> was built. We have continued exploration of this family looking at downscaling and leveraging further efficiency gains to enable more innovative engineering layouts, in turn enabling a more creative canvas for the design community. We have a new platform to launch based on the 3rd generation of UE Series, that is quite unusual and should enable design USP to be created in the market.Finally we have been actively developing smaller families, such as that which underpins our 50m Spitfire in Turkey, that is derived from mature and proven patrol vessel designs, yacht support operations derived from offshore oil and gas supply designs that have proven operation in very demanding conditions. Finally our Type-S series is a very refined and elegant design family incorporating integrated propulsion systems, the first 45 metre variant of which has been delivered from Turkey. Our development process is being driven in a different direction to traditional approaches. The drive for efficiency is broadening away from simply focusing on optimising to discreet contract speeds, or across a range of speeds, consideration of real operation targets becomes more relevant. Overall footprint is the primary objective, whilst still delivering to serve the design intent. This demands an approach that takes a broader range of variables into account, and therefore needs more elegant and multifaceted optimisation techniques. Inside the Evolution: A Q&A on the progressive development of hull design

Situated on Spain's northeastern Mediterranean coast in the city of Tarragona, is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a>, which has established itself as one of the superyacht industry's leading technical marinas. Yet according to Maite Murillo Galimany, Commercial Executive at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a>, the nickname extends far beyond the vessels themselves. "We call <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a> ‘Home of Giants’ due to the big size of the superyachts we host in Tarragona," Maite explains. "I would add that it’s the ‘Home of Giants’ as well for the professional team you find there including the companies set in the marina."Having recently celebrated her tenth anniversary at the marina, Maite has witnessed first-hand the transformation of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a> from a relatively quiet facility into one of the Mediterranean's most established technical yachting hubs.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396338/image/large-fca205e48cc33ba9ee3fc59247f69023.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396338">A decade of growthMaite joined <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a> after working in the hospitality industry for numerous years. Eager for a new challenge, joining <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a> “felt like I was in the right place at the right moment; I usually remind my colleagues how lucky we are to work in such an industry.”&nbsp;Looking back at the last decade, it has been an exchange of experience: where Maite has brought in a lot of knowledge and know-how from the hospitality sector, as well as a fresh perspective, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a> has, in turn, taught her almost everything she knows about yachting.&nbsp;During her time at the port, Maite has experienced many changes and developments “when I first started, the marina was a very different operation; much more quiet. Then we would be happy if we had all 20 berths full.” There would be time for her to get to know crew members and learn about the industry’s unique demands. For the past three years, during the high season, the 32 berths are constantly busy and it’s never quiet in the port - there is always something to do, someone to help, or a next event to organise.&nbsp;As <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a> continues to grow, the challenge lies not only in meeting the increased operational demands, but also in preserving the company culture. Maite emphasises how “growth should enhance our service; it should never diminish the human connection that sits at the core of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a>.” It is precisely that view that makes <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a> not just a well-functioning marina, but makes it a pleasant port to berth: there is attention to detail, service that includes empathy, and always that personal touch. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396341/image/large-9c8de7b3c0dc25537ef0e8138716f5dd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396341">A human-first approachDespite the busyness of the port, Maite ensures she and her team are always available for those whose paths traverse through <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a>. “I have always kept my sense of empathy towards others,” Maite shares, “we are working for people that are far away from home and their loved ones for months. Being conscious of the human side of the industry is the key to succeeding not just in this role, but as a marina."That philosophy remains central to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a>'s approach today. While the marina is renowned for its technical capabilities and infrastructure, the team places equal importance on creating an environment where crew, captains, contractors and guests feel welcomed and supported. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/64707/image/large-1ed133346042b25c7f81bc037d60865e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/64707">Maite is like the fairy godmother of the port, referring to it as “a factory of dreams coming true.” Vessels and crew that visit the port tend to be there for weeks or months at a time so the goal is to make them feel as comfortable as possible, to provide a sense of home. For Maite and her team that means helping with any type of request that they may receive. “Sometimes it’s helping someone book accommodation, sometimes it’s finding second-hand golf clubs or taking someone to the doctor. Other times it is nothing more than going for a walk with someone who just needs a listening ear.”Sometimes the requests are more technical, like finding a last-minute berthing spot for a superyacht when the marina is technically already fully booked. “Making things like that happen makes you feel fulfilled," Maite shares, “it’s a really, really good feeling.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396337/image/large-52265a745d7405de83cbd61a1434cb4b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396337">Entering the&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6623" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocibar (Company)">Ocibar</a>&nbsp;eraIn 2020, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6623" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocibar (Company)">Group Ocibar</a> took over management of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a>. Since then, the marina has grown exponentially, with an emphasis on creating quality experience for guests and employees alike. “There has been a huge change in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a>’s development when <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6623" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocibar (Company)">Ocibar</a> took over marina management,” Maite says. “The company projects both commercially and on the staff structure were a game changer.”The impact has been visible throughout the marina, which is constantly busy, seeing most of the 32 berths occupied, as well as facilities being expanded and improved and the reputation of the marina within the superyacht community has strengthened. “We’ll have captains who are eager to return and make a quick call to reserve a berth. But we also get a lot of superyachts via referrals, like a captain who recommends <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a> to another captain.”&nbsp;Another important element of the marina is her security. With 24-hour surveillance and glass walls surrounding the entire premise, guests can feel safe and secure, as well as controlled dock access. While Maite finds that the port “has the perfect package,” the most important element of the work lies in the human element: “by being nice, providing good treatment and service to the boats, both in a technical and personal way.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396339/image/large-4fe39a4f831012eebfd1a87fd3917c28.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396339">Enabling growthAs <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a> continues to grow, maintaining a balance between innovation and experience remains a priority. “New and fresh ideas are always on the table but experience is the base that took us where we are,” shares Maite, “so we try to strike a balance between the two.” Commercial assistant Laia Vidaller, who only recently joined the industry, highlights how working in yachting has been “dynamic and unique, every day, I get to see different parts of the industry.”The philosophy extends across the entire team. Different personalities, backgrounds and generations bring varying perspectives, but everyone shares the same objective: continuously improving the marina and the service delivered to its clients. “Nani [the Sales Business Manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6623" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocibar (Company)">Ocibar</a>] is always running, he’s always one step ahead and has such a brilliant mind, this way of working has inspired me a lot,” shares Maite. While there are sometimes differences across departments, generations, or people, the overall goal is to create an environment that values the systems in place whilst looking towards innovative ideas to keep bettering the port. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/64712/image/large-3c9c102b9b04027c2f309de64732d9ef.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/64712">One such way in which the port is innovating, is by focusing its attention to greener projects. With a shift in the yachting industry towards a next generation of owners, who tend to be younger and more focused on eco-friendly and eco-forward innovations, the port is happily joining this movement. "The growth of both the industry and the marina is already moving at high speed when caring about the environment," says Maite. "We can clearly see a huge commitment from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6623" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocibar (Company)">Ocibar</a>."“We’ve placed solar panels on all the buildings in the port, helping us with lighting across the facilities and along the docks,” shares Maite. Another project, which has been in place since 2023, is the water bubble barrier, which works to prevent rubbish from getting into the marina. “We are focused on keeping the marina eco-friendly and safe, but simultaneously we are also introducing two other projects that help keep the water surface in the marina as clean as possible.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396340/image/large-154331418f761509495fc13f2bd5694d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396340">When looking towards the future of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a>, one thing seems very clear: it’s centred on the people. While there is always an exciting new development in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a> and no day is the same, it is the people that make it all happen. “I still see this industry as a factory of dreams coming true,” Maite shares. The brief for both the exterior and interior design was to create a yacht that feels right to live on, emotionally, physically and sensorially. There is total silence onboard.”Another one of the senses <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5252" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alpha Custom Yachts (Company)">Alpha Custom Yachts</a> is especially considerate of is smell. “You can walk into a beautiful boat but if it’s humid or there are unpleasant odours, it ruins the experience.” The yard has noticed that many of the odour-related issues don’t actually originate from black or grey water tanks themselves, but from low-quality piping systems that begin to sweat over time. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/395761/image/large-f1870b9a00c455b1e44bcca22a5b9127.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/395761">To prevent this, the Squalo 100 has incorporated high quality piping systems alongside a positive-pressure make-up air system designed to continuously renew and purify the air onboard. “Approximately six times per hour, the entire interior air volume is renewed with fresh air.” The result is a refreshing onboard environment.The air-flow design onboard the yacht has also been thoroughly considered: “we maintain more pressure inside the salon than outside, so when the doors open, fresh air escapes outward and blocks hot air from entering” Roberto explains. You cannot just take an iPad interface and put it on a television. The interaction is different, the pace is different and the screen is viewed differently.We focused on making the experience clear, smooth and visually strong. Guests should not feel like they are navigating software. The app should feel effortless: open it, browse, understand where you are, and enjoy the content.The details matter a lot. How the menu moves, how quickly information loads, how readable everything is from across the room. Those things define whether it feels premium or not.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7736" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="YachtEye (Company)">YachtEye</a>&nbsp;is already used on more than 100 yachts. How do you keep the product personal for each vessel? Daniel: Every yacht has its own way of working. The platform should not become extra work. It should make things easier. Guests often want to know who is looking after them.The point is not to overwhelm guests with information. The point is to bring together the information they actually care about, in a way that is easy to explore.Where do you see onboard guest technology going?Daniel: I think the best yacht technology will become less visible as “technology”. It should just work. It should feel natural. Guests should not need instructions.People are used to very polished digital experiences in their normal life. When they step onboard a superyacht, expectations are even higher. But the solution is not to make things complicated. It is to make the right things simple.That is what we are trying to do with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7736" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="YachtEye (Company)">YachtEye</a>.
