Changes in yachting are notoriously glacial – until last year. When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Shipyard</a> delivered its 32.65-metre superyacht X-treme 105, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a>, it was quite literally the ‘talk of the town’, and when she debuted at <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2022">Cannes Yachting Festival</a> the quay was awash with amazement. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255560/image/large-94c48888fcef698d75ab0d933383b59d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255560"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> is radically practical and it’s easy to pass her off as a traditional monohull with a large aft deck for tender storage; but behind her taut muscular design is an unusual and complex piece of engineering: a novel aft deck that can be hydraulically lowered below the waterline to safely launch and retrieve a large tender. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255483/image/large-afea7a6a5101cf22d6d8ec50c7f91540.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255483">The seed of inspiration was sown by her owners, who wanted a multipurpose aft deck: tender storage, a deep but safe swimming pool for their grandchildren, and somewhere to host intimate dinner parties. This all had to be squeezed into a 32.65-metre platform. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4789" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bernd Weel Design (Company)">Bernd Weel Design</a> was the studio behind stylish, muscular and very attractive exterior design. But the big question, though: will it work? And who better to put the challenge to than <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>?&nbsp;“We’re not afraid of a challenge,” Casper Marelis, Naval Architect &amp; Designer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>, told SuperYacht Times. “But this really was a major one, and we’ve definitely learnt a lot from this project.” The biggest learning curve, not only for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a> but for the industry, was engineering a system that could deploy and retrieve a large tender, without the use of a crane. It was a major undertaking – and one that has never been done before. It also came with an added benefit: ease of boarding for both crew and guests. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255481/image/large-96bbf6726a378615aad31a2d2b201ba5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255481"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> features a traditional motor yacht hull, but from amidships, her long aft is divided between two hulls, with the central divide making space for the tender lift that includes a lengthy pool. The platform can be lowered, in between the two hulls collecting seawater and then raised again, to create a pool. The maximum depth of the pool is 6-foot but it can be completely customised for when the younger members of the family are enjoying a swim. When underway the pool floor is hydraulically lifted, turning the aft deck into a wide, flat multi-functional space.“Compared to a ‘normal’ catamaran hull the deck above/between the two hulls on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> which normally absorbs the forces created by waves is missing,” Marelis explained. “So this means theoretically the PS hull can move up and the SB hull can move down. These forces all transfer to the connection point to the monohull instead of the deck above. An extensive ‘Finite Elements Method’ short FEM calculation made it possible to analyse these forces and the resulting tensions in the structure and made it possible to strengthen the problem areas very precisely. To give you an example, there are parts which had to be 40mm thick high tensile steel while without the fold down platform the thickness could be 5mm normal steel.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255480/image/large-5b3817c529eabb79a5ea8c0d139db18c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255480"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a> conducted rigorous FEM analysis of the total hull construction very early on in the process, and in direct conversation with classification society and flag state. Even though this was novel, the studio was determined to actualise the owner’s wishes. Coincidently, after devising a method for the system to raise and lower, the pool was relatively easy to engineer.&nbsp;“The forces on the system depend on how much of a closed volume (air) must be pushed underwater. So we made the structure of the platform hollow above the waterline to minimise this volume. This left a big ‘empty space’ which could also house a pool. This can fill up while the system lowers. And although almost 14 tonnes of water has to be lifted afterwards, the closed volume of the platform will push this extra weight upwards.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255559/image/large-4eb454ec2d910f2e0bfe6612c0786252.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255559">Naturally though, such a radical design was to cause waves throughout the vessel and more challenges arose, especially after a last-minute request to add a garage at midships: where to place the engine room?“With the last minute change it meant that all the equipment moved aft, but also the structural parts like the engine seating. This meant a lot of extra weight in the aft ship for which the hull form had to be adapted. More weight in the multihull arms also meant more forces and vibrations which had to be accounted for,” Marelis said. “Due to the addition of a tender garage the multihull arms turned into the engine rooms. This meant splitting the engine rooms, so doubling up on multiple systems while the space got smaller. But this also meant moving the propshafts outboard which has a negative effect on flow towards the propeller. To have a proper water flow towards the propellers steering nozzles were added.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255484/image/large-a138625aca462766f27a269e9675b4d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255484">The FEM calculation was an integral part of the aft section of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a>, but for the forward section was treated as normal. This helps reduce lead time as it “made it possible to start building the forward section already while a lot more engineering time was created to be spent on the difficult aft ship section.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255482/image/large-7a7c182b4234e98892340a113c0b5306.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255482">But the aft deck is just one part of the story. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> also has a large enclosed tender garage, accommodation for 10 guests, and a dedicated crew apartment – all within a 200 GT package.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> truly defies the impossible, and when pressed if <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a> is looking at other ways to revolutionise yacht design, Marelis said: “We are up to the challenge for sure, we try to implement new ideas in our own concepts like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/55323" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Designing with Diana: Lifting the lid on the 70m superyacht design Project Kaizen (2022-06-29 15:00:00 +0200)">Kaizen</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/50287" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design and Exmar Yachting unveil new hydrogen superyacht concept: Blue Angel (2019-09-05 11:00:00 +0200)">Blue Angel</a> for instance. Apple TV is not simply about showing the same content on a bigger screen. It creates a different kind of interaction.The TV is often the most visible screen onboard, so it gives guests a very natural way to explore the itinerary, the yacht, the surroundings and everything available to them. For us as a product team, this launch also unlocks a lot of potential. What time are we leaving? What is the plan today? What is for dinner? Where are we? Which yacht is anchored next to us? Where is the crew from? What water toys do we have?Crew are there to create an amazing experience, not to answer the same basic questions over and over again. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7736" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="YachtEye (Company)">YachtEye</a> helps by making that information easy to find and beautiful to look at.&nbsp;It is not about replacing personal service. It is about supporting it.From a development point of view, what was important when building the Apple TV app?Irmin Dzevlan, tvOS Developer: The biggest thing was making it feel native to Apple TV. You cannot just take an iPad interface and put it on a television. The interaction is different, the pace is different and the screen is viewed differently.We focused on making the experience clear, smooth and visually strong. Guests should not feel like they are navigating software. The app should feel effortless: open it, browse, understand where you are, and enjoy the content.The details matter a lot. How the menu moves, how quickly information loads, how readable everything is from across the room. Those things define whether it feels premium or not.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7736" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="YachtEye (Company)">YachtEye</a>&nbsp;is already used on more than 100 yachts. How do you keep the product personal for each vessel? Daniel: Every yacht has its own way of working. Our role is to help the crew make <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7736" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="YachtEye (Company)">YachtEye</a> useful for their yacht in the most natural way possible. The platform should not become extra work. It should make things easier. We help and advice the crew to go digital where updates are instant, often even automatically, and where printing becomes old school.&nbsp;That starts with proper onboarding, clear content setup, crew training and regular contact with the team onboard. When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7736" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="YachtEye (Company)">YachtEye</a> is set up well, guests understand it immediately and crew know how to keep it fresh.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/395396/image/large-191ee5bf3fa95fb954e178b7679240fb.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/395396">What kind of content do guests usually engage with most?Daniel: Guests love knowing what is happening and where they are going, so itinerary information and the daily schedule are certainly crucial for most yachts.The Yacht Radar, showing nearby yachts with interior and exterior images as well ad detailed information, is another feature people enjoy because it makes the anchorage come alive.&nbsp;And crew profiles are great because they make the experience more personal. Guests often want to know who is looking after them.The point is not to overwhelm guests with information. The point is to bring together the information they actually care about, in a way that is easy to explore.Where do you see onboard guest technology going?Daniel: I think the best yacht technology will become less visible as “technology”. It should just work. It should feel natural. Guests should not need instructions.People are used to very polished digital experiences in their normal life. When they step onboard a superyacht, expectations are even higher. But the solution is not to make things complicated. It is to make the right things simple.That is what we are trying to do with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7736" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="YachtEye (Company)">YachtEye</a>. From the development of its new ULTIMA range to advancing solar-powered and near-zero-emission cruising technologies, the Polish shipyard is reshaping expectations of what a luxury multihull can deliver. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/393756/image/large-4ec8dde4d4c215d0156df3e50b608098.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/393756">Speaking about the future of catamaran superyachts, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> co-founder and CTO Nicolas Lapp outlined how changing owner priorities are influencing everything from propulsion systems and onboard comfort to material selection and artificial intelligence-driven sailing technologies.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394038/image/large-de1683fdbf2981d69e7999ae8abad7d2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394038">A new direction for performance catamaransAccording to Lapp, the ULTIMA range was born directly from client demand for greater speed and a more engaging cruising experience, while retaining the spaciousness and comfort associated with multihulls.“The ULTIMA range is really a response to what our clients were asking for,” explained Lapp. “They love the comfort and space of our catamarans, but many wanted more performance, more speed and a more dynamic experience underway.”“With ULTIMA, the goal was to combine the best of both worlds: the liveability of a catamaran with the performance closer to a monohull.” To achieve this, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> developed a sleeker hull architecture combined with carefully optimised propulsion systems designed to improve both efficiency and speed. The first ULTIMA 88 is capable of reaching 26 knots, with additional engine configurations planned for future models.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394028/image/large-7971dab87ae7b5ead04551be001adcea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394028">“The first ULTIMA 88 reaches 26 knots, but soon you will also see new engine configurations that will allow for even higher performance depending on owner preferences,” he added.Balancing speed, efficiency and comfort, however, presented a significant engineering challenge for the shipyard. “The platform is quite different from classic Sunreef catamarans, so it required a fresh approach on multiple levels,” said Lapp.One of the most notable developments was the introduction of stabilisation systems for the first time within the range. “For the first time, we introduced stabilisers,” he explained. “With this new architecture, it became essential to ensure the same level of onboard comfort our clients expect. Selecting the right system was a challenge in itself, but we found a stabilisation solution that fits the ULTIMA 88 perfectly and performs exceptionally well.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243904/image/large-7cd5c4f3256f9a5d0cbf4de4230e2297.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243904">The growing appeal of catamaran superyachtsLapp believes the wider superyacht market is increasingly recognising the inherent advantages of multihull platforms, particularly as owner priorities shift toward efficiency, practicality and understated luxury. “Catamaran superyachts are currently one of the strongest and most exciting trends in the market,” he noted. “From the very beginning <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> has focused on combining superyacht quality with the catamaran platform.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394065/image/large-66926bacf337b76a2728b4cd517b6ddc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394065">Projects such as the 100 Sunreef Power, Sunreef 37M Eco and the 43M Eco illustrate how these changing expectations are influencing both technical development and interior design philosophy. “In terms of interiors, there’s a strong shift toward more spacious, calming environments – soft colors, a more ‘zen’ atmosphere,” Lapp said. “It’s less about ostentation and more about understated, refined luxury.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217059/image/large-12e630eaaf8f68845b8e70c05748ce14.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217059">At the same time, owners are becoming increasingly conscious of operational efficiency and environmental impact. “Energy efficiency and sustainability have become key considerations,” he explained. “Owners are increasingly aware of how their yachts operate and are looking for smarter, more responsible solutions.”Lapp also highlighted the practical benefits catamarans offer over traditional monohulls, particularly in terms of volume and energy efficiency. “The most obvious advantage is space,” he said. “The wider beam allows for much larger, open living areas, both inside and outside. This width also gives us a more usable surface for solar integration, which directly supports our energy strategy.” In addition to larger onboard spaces, catamarans benefit from shallower drafts and more efficient hull dynamics. “They require less energy to move through the water,” Lapp explained. “The engineering approach is different, but the payoff is significant: more volume and better (Company)">Sunreef</a>’s long-term strategy, with the shipyard continuing to expand its portfolio of electric and hybrid-powered yachts.“We take a 360-degree approach to eco-conscious yachting,” said Lapp. “It’s not about a single technology, but how different systems work together.” Among the most impactful developments are the integration of solar panels, advanced battery systems and energy-efficient air conditioning technologies, all aimed at significantly reducing generator dependency. “This allows yachts to significantly reduce generator use,” he noted.On sailing catamarans, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> is also incorporating hydroregeneration systems capable of producing electricity from the movement of the propellers under sail. “With the right setup and navigation profile, this combination can bring the yacht very close to zero-emission operation in real conditions,” Lapp explained.&nbsp;Solar integration itself has become a defining element of the shipyard’s design philosophy. “What makes our solution different is that the panels are not just added on – they’re fully integrated into the yacht’s structure,” he said. “The hull sides, superstructure, bimini, even masts in some cases.”By maximising available surface area for energy generation, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> is able to reduce reliance on conventional onboard power systems. “Instead of relying on generators, we can cover up to 100% of the hotel load directly from solar energy,” Lapp revealed. “When it comes to cruising, with the right navigation profile, like island hopping and smart energy management, it’s possible to navigate using close to zero fuel.”<img (Company)">Sunreef</a> is also investing heavily in advanced materials aimed at improving both performance and sustainability. “For example, we use recycled PET foam made from plastic bottles,” said Lapp. “Beyond being sustainable, it helps reduce weight, which improves overall yacht efficiency and performance.”The shipyard is additionally replacing traditional plywood structures in certain areas with lighter PET-based alternatives, while exploring natural composite materials such as flax fibre. “We’re also introducing materials like flax fiber, which offer similar properties to composites but come from natural, low-impact sources,” he added.Looking ahead, Lapp believes artificial intelligence and automation will play a defining role in the future of large sailing catamarans. “One of the most exciting directions for large multihull yachts is definitely the evolution of sailing itself,” he said.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" sailing performance more accessible and easier to manage, even on larger yachts.” While details remain limited, he hinted that the shipyard will soon unveil further developments in this area.<img explained. “We’re building on technologies that are already tested and proven, and adapting them for larger platforms through a dedicated superyacht team.”Ultimately, Lapp believes the perception of superyachts themselves is beginning to change. “They don’t have to be associated with high emissions,” he concluded. “They can just as well stand for energy efficiency and responsible innovation.”

Leona Caanen sat down with Richard Hadida, long-time sailor, owner and chairman of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster Yachts</a>, who is currently on a 16-month journey to circumnavigate the globe with fellow&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster Yacht</a>&nbsp;owners.&nbsp;Sailing around the San Blas islands off the coast of Panama is Richard Hadida, a life-long sailor and, since 2018 the owner of the UK-based <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster Yachts</a>. Joining Richard in the azure blue waters of Panama are another 23 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a> sailing yachts, preparing to cross the Panama Canal and head towards French Polynesia. The reason? The 2026-27 Oyster World Rally.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/378811/image/large-09e42b8e3770ce85e64a241b12171e1d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/378811">The rally around the worldWhat started in 2013, has turned into a well-loved tradition for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster Yacht</a> owners. Every two years, a group of owners set out to circumnavigate the globe together over the course of 16 months. The only requirement is owning an <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster Yacht</a>. When Richard took over ownership of the shipyard, the rally was well underway: “They were all in New Zealand and didn't know what was happening; they were nervous it was all going to be over.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/393554/image/large-a46b63aab5a0e574b8b0b04078059147.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/393554">Almost immediately, Richard sent someone out there and said, “Look, you know, we've picked it up. We'll look after you guys. Don't worry. Everything's good.” He kept true to his promise, and, minus a pandemic-related hiccup, the rally has happened every other year. Richard notes that, throughout the past eight years “There's been lots and lots of ups along the way, but my highlight is this rally.”The route is the same each rally, starting in the Antigua harbour, heading south and through the Panama Canal before sailing towards French Polynesia, Australia and the Great Barrier Reef, followed by island hopping in Indonesia, around the Cape of Good Hope, before returning to the starting point. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/378813/image/large-f6e264dfd96b0c95a19266c04a03c9e9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/378813">An important distinction is that the rally is not a race. Rather, it is a shared passage around the world that blends exploration with the reassurance of a structured support network. Richard emphasises that the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oysters</a> are well-cared for, “we fly out our best engineers and they fix all the little teething, little snagging issues. We know our own boats, right? We have the designs. We know every single detail.” It’s a sense of service that provides comfort for everyone involved, as well as those at home.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/393558/image/large-f6540711463b84f7c7f3daf1d2f48eb0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/393558">Partaking in tradition“It’s always been in my mind's eye, partaking in the rally, as something I'd love to do.” Discussing the ideal timeline with his wife, they were considering either 2028 or 2030, “suddenly we were like, why wouldn't we do it now?” Richard shares, “it was like a revelation.” Thus began the preparations for the 2026 rally onboard his <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a> 885, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6352" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lush27.08m (88'10&quot;)Oyster Yachts2012">Lush</a>.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster Yachts</a> are built for what Richard describes as ‘blue water’ capability: yachts designed for long distance ocean passage. Construction quality, redundancy in systems and a focus on safety all play a role in enabling owners to undertake global voyages with confidence. Richard’s yacht, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6352" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lush27.08m (88'10&quot;)Oyster Yachts2012">Lush</a>, has crossed the Atlantic twenty times, “she’s twelve years old and she’s already circumnavigated once before. You feel the strength and the security when you’re sailing.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/393555/image/large-0abb38e810c7944d433ff5b80a391cf3.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/393555">Yet despite this capability and the trust in the build, each participating yacht and its crew need to undergo a certain level of training. Participants spend up to a year attending seminars and training sessions covering everything from offshore navigation to safety procedures. Survival courses, fire training and life raft drills form part of the preparation, ensuring that every sailor understands how to respond in an emergency.Additionally, weather routing specialists monitor conditions throughout the voyage, advising the fleet and each vessel carries satellite tracking equipment so that the rally organisers can follow the fleet’s progress in real time.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396105/image/large-8b5d727cc491eebd0fb5df4f2d7b05e6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396105">Slow sailingCircumnavigation can be completed far faster than 16 months. The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a> World Rally intentionally chooses a slower rhythm. The aim is not simply to cross oceans but to absorb the places along the way. “There’s something about travelling slowly,” Richard notes. “You cover every mile and you feel the world changing around you. The temperature shifts, the time zones change, and you understand exactly where you are.”Weeks have been spent among the San Blas Islands, an archipelago of more than 300 islands, where instead of rushing onward, the fleet lingered for days, exploring remote anchorages and travelling inland to jungle waterfalls between sailing passages.The ability to enjoy such slow travel is thanks to certain luxuries the likes of Starlink, which keep Richard and fellow sailors connected to life back home. While the bulk of time is spent sailing and adventuring with his wife, sons and crew, there’s also the opportunity to take work calls. “It’s extraordinary,” Richard notes, “you can go on an adventure in the middle of the day, come back to the boat, and carry on with work.” True to his word, Richard ends our call to go crocodile-spotting with his youngest son.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/393556/image/large-6feb41da1249d7e2cef2c14e05ea49e7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/393556">Travelling with purposeA newer dimension of the rally is the concept of regenerative tourism, an approach that encourages sailors to leave a positive impact on the destinations they visit. Unlike traditional sustainability initiatives that focus primarily on reducing harm, regenerative tourism seeks to actively improve the environments and communities encountered along the way.&nbsp;Activities range from environmental awareness projects to supporting local conservation initiatives. “It could be awareness, it could be picking up plastic, it could be supporting conservation,” Richard explains. “The idea is that we leave a place slightly better than we found it.”One upcoming stop highlights that ambition. In the Galápagos Islands, the fleet will host a series of discussions led by Sarah Darwin, the great-great-granddaughter of Charles Darwin, who is involved in ecological restoration projects in the archipelago. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396091/image/large-94301c4c375b86a2cd7253c448878fd6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396091">A family voyagePerhaps the most striking element of Richard’s participation is that he gets to share it with his wife and youngest son, who are also onboard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6352" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lush27.08m (88'10&quot;)Oyster Yachts2012">Lush</a>. “My two older sons are now 21 or 19, but when they were like 10, I was watching them jump off the side, and now I've got my two-year-old growing up on the same boat; I love that.”“I’m not someone who likes disposable things,” he says. “This boat has memories in it. Richard understands the sentiment, “once you begin to experience the world at the pace of a sailing yacht, the idea of rushing through it again feels strangely unfamiliar. In addition, the yacht’s indoor and outdoor areas are seamlessly connected thanks to her full-height windows and Baglietto’s signature “cut-out” bulwarks, which strengthen connection to the sea.On her upper deck, a veranda that opens on three sides hosts a panoramic dining room, while her foredeck features a lounge area, sunpads and a Jacuzzi located at the bow. Moreover, a rooftop, rare for yachts of her category, serves as a private retreat where guests can dine, lounge, and relax.Furthermore, a stern garage with a flooding launch system is capable of accommodating a tender up to seven-metres, alongside a second garage forward.The yacht's interiors have been designed to complement the exterior design. Lacquered surfaces, experimental woods such as burnt oak, and artistic lighting all harmoniously contribute to her contemporary design profile. First 50m Baglietto FAST50 superyacht launched

Baglietto has launched the first 50m FAST50 yacht from its shipyard in La Spezia, Italy.

The 27m <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9444" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Avontuur27.4m (89'11&quot;)Lynx Yachts2022">Avontuur</a> (Dutch for adventure) was launched from her builder’s, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3031" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lynx Yachts (Company)">Lynx</a>’s, facility earlier this year and has recently completed her sea trials. 15 yachts that feature naval architecture and engineering by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a> is working on an all-new 70.17-metre superyacht concept, dubbed Project Kaizen – and she looks gorgeous. Her name draws influence from the philosophy driving this project, continual improvement and “a change for better.” An ongoing task for such a prolific design studio with an impressive fleet.“This project was a logical step for our design team,” Hans-Maarten Bais, Creative Director and Naval Architect at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. The design team also made great use of glass, layering it around the profile in a complex manner to further this characteristic.“Our main focus for the 70 metre concept was to create a modern and timeless yacht that caters to the needs of a family that spans three generations,” Casper Marelis, Designer and Naval Architect at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>, explained. “It was important for us to create a project where everyone on board has plenty of opportunities to socialise all together, without compromising on private areas. Added to that is the collection of balconies – both for guests and the owner’s private use – and, of course, the generous deck areas. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. Her main salon, for one, is split across two levels to really open up the space and create an environment where the whole family can unwind together, while still enjoying their own leisurely pursuits. The deck areas are just as accommodating and the aft area is open and fitted with an infinity pool, swim platforms and a cluster of sunbeds – spacious enough for the whole family. Designing with Diana: Lifting the lid on the 70m superyacht design Project Kaizen

The Dutch naval architecture and design studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a> has unveiled a brand new, radical superyacht concept in time for this year’s Monaco Yacht Show: the 36-metre Blue Angel superyacht. With hydrogen propulsion providing the yacht’s power, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a> and the Belgian company <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4440" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Exmar Yachting (Company)">Exmar Yachting</a> prove the eco-credentials within the superyacht industry can be so much more than surface level. Blue Angel is aesthetically appealing; she is clean and athletic with modern exterior lines, and, above all, realistic in the design. SuperYacht Times spoke to the team behind Blue Angel to find out more. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/96035/image/large-615c265b913abb789f13c3db670fe3aa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/96035">Clean, green power &nbsp;The idea behind this ecological yacht began with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4440" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Exmar Yachting (Company)">Exmar Yachting</a>, who had been closely following the development of technology for creating a hydrogen-powered yacht. After some creative meetings with the Dutch studio, sketches of the first of three yacht concepts were made: the 'Ecological' Blue Angel concept.&nbsp;The concept is based on meeting the needs of a hard-working, modern family who are looking to make the most of their leisure time, enjoy a luxury lifestyle and explore the world but who also care deeply about the environment. The concept’s name is inspired both by the ‘Blue Angel’ certification (or ‘Eco-label’) for products and services that are environmentally friendly in Germany, as well as the association in Asia between the colour blue and clean air and water. &nbsp; &nbsp; Getting technical &nbsp; Blue Angel is equipped to run on hydrogen as its sole fuel at cruising speed and hotel loads for up to 18 hours, making use of fuel cell modules. The benefits of this style of propulsion for the owner are many: it allows cruising with zero emissions without the noise pollution and vibrations found from the use of generators or direct drive propulsion engines and makes for a far more pleasurable cruising experience for those on board. The hydrogen itself is carried in safe, cylindrical tanks and the distribution and monitoring system for the hydrogen has been extensively tested in pilot projects which met class approval. With this hydrogen providing 100% of the power at shorter ranges, the yacht is designed to use hybrid electric power at longer ranges. This intelligent hybrid system consists of two hydrogen fuel cells modules that work in combination with redundant diesel generators which can be used as a range extender or to increase the transit speed. &nbsp; &nbsp; <img src="/uploads/store/photo/96037/image/large-629aac0df96472a6ac804637a976920e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/96037">Bold by design&nbsp; Designed to be a real family home on the seas, all of the luxury cabins can be found together on the main deck - an unusual feature for a yacht of this size. The design of Blue Angel is defined by its open and spacious decks complemented by large windows. Her exterior lines are accentuated by the forward-placed superstructure, giving her an explorer look, and two-tone colour scheme. The combination of a vertical bow and smooth lines gives the yacht’s overall appearance a striking, but not overly aggressive, look.&nbsp;In terms of her layout, a full-beam owner’s cabin, one double and one twin stateroom can be found on the main deck. On the lower deck, there is an extra guest cabin which can be transformed into a TV/games room. Up to seven crew members can be accommodated for on board Blue Angel and make the most of her large galley and crew mess. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/96036/image/large-f6db220edbd3e3780dd4fde74827110e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/96036">The upper deck lounge can be opened up to create a large aft space which overlooks the lower deck activities and watersports. This generously-spaced aft deck is the ideal place to hang out by the sea. &nbsp;When all of the tenders and toys are offloaded, this large open space can be turned into a lounging area, an outside dining area, a sports deck or even a movie theatre. Inside, you can find a full-beam lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows, as well as a coffee corner and a large dining table.&nbsp;Going up to the bridge deck, there is a large lounge with an openable aft wall to create the ultimate beach house feeling, as well as an outside lounging area with sofas and Portuguese beds. The interior design of Blue Angel is both spacious and modern, creating a relaxed and open feeling for her onboard guests. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/96039/image/large-7a5d280cfe3deb9c6b322f43f878a9ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/96039"> Digging into the details &nbsp;To find out more about the inspiration behind this radical new superyacht concept, we caught up with Casper Marelis, naval architect and designer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>, and Xavier Ex, Head of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4440" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Exmar Yachting (Company)">Exmar Yachting</a> Department.What was the main inspiration behind the design of Blue Angel? &nbsp;Casper Marelis: Blue Angel had to be something extreme which really catches your eye. Looking at how the car industry has evolved towards greener solutions, you notice that all of the first models have been more extreme in order to gain people’s attention. Somebody choosing this eco-approach is somebody with guts and who likes to stand out from the crowd. A masculine and powerful exterior design matches perfectly with this idea. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/96040/image/large-90e278097991af85d5dbd70ae9119b09.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/96040">As co-creator of the Blue Angel concept, did the yacht’s design have to be adapted to accommodate the hydrogen propulsion system? &nbsp;Xavier Ex: Indeed it did. We opted for Azimuth pods because besides providing great flexibility, reliability and low electrical consumption while reducing noise and vibration, these also provide extra space in the engine room. That extra space allows room for the generators and fuel cells to be installed in the footprint of your standard engine room. No immediate changes have been foreseen in the tank plan, allowing the yacht to carry a ‘normal’ amount of diesel on board for long-range deliveries. The amount of hydrogen that will be able to be carried on board will depend on the implementation of the space below the aft deck and can be filled in to match the owners’ wishes. Aside from being more eco-friendly, are there any other benefits to having a hydrogen propulsion system? &nbsp; &nbsp; Xavier Ex: When Blue Angel is running on hydrogen as its sole fuel, this allows for silent and clean cruising with zero emissions. These fuel cells are completely silent, vibration, smoke and smell free. This means you will no longer need to run any generators during your normal day-trips or whilst at anchor, when coming into or leaving port, thus meaning the onboard experience is much quieter and therefore more enjoyable. In addition, refuelling can be done by a truck. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/96034/image/large-5bbdcf797fcb922e4323db9e537b4ffc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/96034">Have you designed an environmentally-conscious yacht before? Does the design process vary to make the yacht more eco-friendly?Casper Marelis: Blue Angel is the first yacht design with an alternative propulsion system. Since 2007, we have been working on optimizing our generator capacity and complementing it with battery packs. This has had the biggest impact on the layout, but overall, the exterior design process hasn’t been much different. We are always environmentally conscious and make our yachts as fuel-efficient as they can be. The biggest component for this is the drag of the hull. One of the items which reduces the drag is making the hull narrower. Finding the balance between interior space and efficiency is the most challenging part for us. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Did your background in naval architecture affect your approach to the design? If so, how?&nbsp;Casper Marelis: Having a naval architecture background allows me to estimate if something will work very quickly, like deck heights, gross tonnage, stability or the space available for construction. But this can also be a limiting factor when pushing the boundaries. I always try to push them as much as possible. By having all of the knowledge that we have here in the office, somebody will always say if it’s gone too far. This is what makes our designs realistic and avoids disappointments in the further stages of development. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/96033/image/large-504ee95916a0c97d8de55d4365d7ac02.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/96033">Why did you opt for a forward-placed superstructure? Did you design the exterior differently to stay in tune with the eco-friendly approach of the project? &nbsp;Casper Marelis: The market research we conducted for the project showed us that this was the best position for the superstructure to be located and also gives the yacht an explorer look and feel. The exterior design mostly reflects the family lifestyle with the big aft deck which can be used in different ways. While the children are playing in the water or on the aft deck, the parents can enjoy the upper deck while keeping an eye on them.&nbsp;We also had to include large hydrogen tanks, so we needed to keep a close eye on the weight distribution. As we are naval architects, we wanted to make a concept that was realistic above all, and our studies showed us that this was the perfect position. By pushing the superstructure forward, you create a larger, sheltered aft deck without disturbance, with dimensions not seen on other yachts of this size. &nbsp; &nbsp; What about the interiors? In what way does the interior design of Blue Angel reflect the eco-friendliness of the concept? &nbsp;Casper Marelis: The design is clean and modern. By using sustainable materials and well-chosen furniture, we are trying to leave the smallest carbon footprint possible. We used a lot of glass and large windows to create an interior that is light and airy to bring the feeling of the outside in. We also wanted to make sure that the guests on board are more aware of the amount of energy they use. So in every room, we installed Smart Energy screens and would encourage guests to turn off the air conditioning when they leave the room and close the doors behind them. &nbsp; <img src="/uploads/store/photo/96275/image/large-61b7957736711dc5fbeeea42c786e82f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/96275"> Finally, why was it decided to make the Blue Angel yacht 36-metres long? Would it be possible to scale this 36-metre up in the future? &nbsp;Casper Marelis: 36 metres is an attractive size in both Europe and America.
