Dubai International Boat Show has announced that its 2026 edition will now take place from 25 to 29 November at Dubai Harbour.

On 28 February, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East intensified, bringing renewed scrutiny to stability across the Gulf region. The developments follow a period of sustained uncertainty since October 2023, when regional conflict first escalated.In recent months, there was a perception that conditions were gradually stabilising, particularly after Houthi forces announced a halt to attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea.The latest developments, however, have revived questions over the implications for superyacht operations and insurance cover in the region.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/371506/image/large-e25bec56d4382b9c999e4cae8b373e50.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/371506">Operational implicationsWhether the recent instability, including reports of collateral incidents, is prompting superyachts to depart the Gulf appears limited at this stage. Captain Mike Fetton, Managing Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6806" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="JLS Yachts (Company)">JLS Yachts</a>, reports that while there have been isolated enquiries regarding outward clearance and contingency routing, no broader movement has materialised.“At this stage we have not observed a significant or coordinated departure of yachts from the region,” Fetton says, adding that “the majority of vessels elect to remain in port” following informal guidance from authorities to stay within port limits where they can be clearly identified and supported rather than increasing exposure through unnecessary movement.Ports across the UAE, Fetton says, “remain operational”, with no formal maritime navigation restrictions issued. He adds that “most captains and Company Security Officers (CSOs) appear aligned in the view that sheltering in place, maintaining situational awareness, and avoiding reactionary decisions is the prudent course of action.”Fetton adds that “some vessels have adopted ISPS Code Security Level 2 precautions, even though ports themselves remain at ISPS Code Security Level 1.” Under the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code, ISPS Code Security Level 1 denotes normal operations, while Level 2 signals heightened protective measures in response to an increased risk of a security incident. This means certain yachts are implementing enhanced onboard precautions, such as increased watchkeeping and restricted access, even though the port’s official status remains unchanged and operations continue normally.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382881/image/large-f0da29885e4355f369f6c99f44f10c02.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382881">Insurance and war-risk implicationsWhile ports remain operational, war-risk underwriting across the region is tightening. A spokesperson of an insurance provider confirms that war underwriters are issuing Notices of Cancellation for war cover across the wider Gulf.“As we speak, we are being served with NOC (Notice of Cancellation) for war cover,” the spokesperson says, noting that the measure is not limited to the Red Sea but extends across the Arabian Gulf, Bab al-Mandeb, the Strait of Hormuz and parts of the Arabian Sea. “Buy-back options are currently not available in view of escalating situations.”Yachts remaining securely berthed continue to retain standard Hull &amp; Machinery cover. However, “loss or damage due to war is not covered” until war cover can be reinstated at an additional premium.This means that even vessels sheltering in port remain exposed to uninsured war-related perils. Should damage arise from an incident whose proximate cause is linked to a war-related trigger, the exclusion would apply. The spokesperson confirms that in a scenario where a conflict-related explosion leads to secondary damage, such as a marina fire, the originating trigger would determine classification of the claim. In such circumstances, the loss would fall under the war exclusion until cover is restored.While conventional marine risks remain insured, the temporary withdrawal of war-risk capacity shifts that specific layer of exposure back to owners until underwriting support returns.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/371504/image/large-b5a5ed4457b4e7a98df97f43753b07f6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/371504">Short-term volatility or lasting impact?Whether the current instability represents a temporary disruption or a more enduring shift in regional yacht activity remains an open question. Fetton, however, characterises the situation as short-term rather than structural, drawing parallels with the 2019 regional tensions and the COVID-19 period. In his view, the superyacht sector has historically demonstrated resilience when supported by proactive coordination and structured communication.“At present, we view this as a short-term disruption driven more by airspace and travel considerations than by maritime operational constraints,” he says. While crew rotations and certain supply chains may experience temporary pressure, ports remain open and provisioning continues.He adds that “unless there is a material escalation or formal change in maritime regulation, we would expect yacht activity to stabilise once air traffic normalises and regional security levels de-escalate.” Although the UAE security posture remains elevated as a precaution, Fetton stresses that there has been “no formal maritime closure, no declaration of a war zone within UAE territorial waters, and no suspension of port operations.”However, while there has been no systemic shutdown, operational decisions and insurance conditions alike reflect a sector navigating heightened risk rather than operating under normal conditions.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382691/image/large-bfe32ac7942473d225d8bab88c2e49c0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382691">
