But this can only go so far. The choices made in original specification, design engineering and construction pedigree all play a part. And at a time where technology is advancing alongside the energy transition and the pursuit of Zero, future-proofing will become increasingly important.&nbsp;However, future-proofing does not only impact asset resale protection. Many owners are equally concerned with their yacht meeting sustainability ambitions relating to reduced footprint, reaching Zero, and avoiding becoming outdated in the face of changing future regulation. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251704/image/large-c9adbe559bc473b0c557e4ad17ca4cd7.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251704">Committing to ChangeAs the lifespan of a superyacht can span three, four or more times that of a commercial ship, a yacht built today will need to be adaptable through the course of its lifetime. So should we be asking ourselves which technology and fuel to commit to when designing and then building this new yacht? In reality, the better question is probably to ask how we can create an adaptable architecture onboard so the yacht can be practically modified through the decades, in line with evolving and emerging Net Zero solutions.&nbsp;Future-proofing is something that is already being carried out by owners of ships in the commercial marine market, even with their far shorter lifespans. What is evident from observing market dynamics and industry insights from this sector, is that owners and operators are still heavily hedging against future outcomes. The majority of future-proofed tonnage already in service or on order is following a strategy of dual fuel. Onboard technology is not and will not be a limiting factor here, as we anticipate the commercial availability of various systems that operate on a broad spectrum of fuel types from different production methods in the next three to eight years.&nbsp;What is clear is that we can’t expect the commercial side of our industry to offer yachting a one-solution-fits-all model. The energy transition will take place across multiple routes, with complex decisions to be made along the way, and we will undoubtedly end up with a wide range of solutions to achieve our collective Zero goals. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251705/image/large-f5ee446a589b1f78cb45f4ab70179022.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251705">Building Tomorrow's Superyachts, Today&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> is investing in future-proofing our yachts to offer technical solutions that are highly adaptable through a yacht’s lifespan, with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> providing through-life energy transition support along the way.This is not just a question of being environmentally consciousness as an industry. It is an existential matter for yachting. Failure to provide acceptable solutions could impact engagement with coming generations of owners and their families, who expect greater efforts to be made to reach Zero.&nbsp;Riding the WaveFuture-proofing a superyacht requires us to anticipate the future in order to enable informed choices of layout, configuration, technology and specification that will avoid becoming outdated within the intended lifespan of the yacht. Riding the wave of energy transitions is the greatest challenge we face in this context.&nbsp;Let’s imagine the energy transition timeline. At the far end is a non-carbon-based fuel such as liquid hydrogen. This offers an extreme future view of zero-carbon yachting with fuel that can be authentically produced using technology that is available today. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>, together with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral Naval Architects</a>, explored this point on the spectrum with its 2019 Aqua design, a 110m motoryacht powered by liquified green hydrogen. Research into such technology is continuing at both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a>, in collaboration with a range of industry partners. However, commitment to a specific fuel such as hydrogen carries a commitment to investment in associated infrastructure to actually run the yacht. As such, it may not suit the majority of yacht owners.Consider the current state of the art, represented by all-electric DC architecture. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> is convinced that an advanced all-electrical architecture is an enabler to the use of future fuels, but it is not strictly necessary to pursue a future fuel right now in order to be future proof.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/206885/image/large-6ce524fe4c919263d789b8991d4e11bc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/206885">New &amp; Improved Batteries Sold SeparatelyWe can be certain that battery technology will advance to offer greater capability in the future. So implementing a significant degree of battery capability within a yacht’s overall energy architecture will lead to improved system performance in future years. Additionally, the capacity for emissions-free (including carbon-free) operation should form part of a future-proofing strategy, which is best served via a battery-based solution.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> has a number of new-build projects that represent this current state of the art. Together with Lateral, it has explored other near-term developments, namely an advancement of diesel electric known as e-Hybrid where batteries form the core energy delivery, enabling significant ‘local zero’ operation. This system was integrated into the first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> NXT design, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/52585" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco reveals KAIROS: the next generation of yachting (2021-03-23 14:00:00 +0100)">KAIROS, which was launched in partnership with Lateral and Pininfarina in 2021</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/211765/image/large-fe4710a96ff6f3b9ef14676f417b9fab.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/211765">Adaptable Three-Phase Approach&nbsp;Between these current state-of-the-art solutions and the far-term end of the transition spectrum lies a significant period of time when we will experience a range of solutions, each a step closer to Zero. This spectrum could potentially span over 30 years, and so today’s future-proofed yachts will need to be configured so they can adapt to the various technical solutions emerging along the way.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> is now engineering for this transition, presenting solutions so a yacht can evolve alongside the energy transition:PHASE 1: Starting life as a state-of-the-art (synthetic) diesel yacht, it will feature efficient dimensions relative to gross tonnage and highly optimised baseline with DC grid, variable speed generators and podded drives incorporating batteries, or e-Hybrid configured. All systems onboard will be fully procurable, state of the art, operable and warrantable today. The yacht’s design will incorporate all elements of architecture needed to accommodate transitional fuels, such as methanol. The yacht design and energy architecture represents a compelling, low-risk purchase in today’s market.PHASE 2: As future technology matures, the yacht can transition via a mid-life upgrade of low impact to a dual-fuel solution, with a low risk to the client. The timing of such a mid-life upgrade would be dependent upon advancement of technology and commercial risk.PHASE 3: The yacht would achieve a Net Zero end state solution via transitioning fully to alternatives such as methanol driving fuel cells or internal combustion to power electrical architecture.Future-proofing for the energy transition is one of the greatest challenges we face to ensure that our yachts remain state of the art across an expanded timeframe, and with the pace of technology accelerating, that requires a smart solution. Reducing risk by opting for an adaptable architecture is the most promising option for an owner wanting to ride the wave of change onboard their superyacht, all the way to Net Zero.&nbsp;

The acrylic topcoat has a faster drying time, offering less surface area for dirt particles to adhere to the still-wet paint film. This topcoat is also slightly softer than a Polyurethane or BC/CC system, allowing for a very good polishability once dried. “With Acrylic Topcoat X, we have a product on the market for a good two years that plays on the level of the other two systems in terms of gloss level – even surpassing them in some cases," commented Thomas. Acrylic Topcoat X is frequently used in Europe as well, specifically Italy, Greece, and Turkey, with an excellent foothold in the US with smaller yacht users. The refit and painting conditions in these locations are also not necessarily cleanroom quality, and sea winds create particles in the air that could harm the wet paint. I really don’t know of any other brokerage firm that has invested so much in these categories, and it has definitely helped us to differentiate ourselves with our clients and win more and more of our competitor’s business.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/35342/image/large-bdee32c15b4a067e6002354accf83f97.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/35342">The brokerage's acquisition in 2021 by industry titan <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1312" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MarineMax (Company)">MarineMax</a> has certainly given the company the financial firepower to make this transition more quickly, but there was always a focus on data analytics and marketing, even prior to the takeover. “Many brokerage houses have just one or two employees who provide their yachting data, but it's generally a slow and outdated manual process that is rarely capable of finding the right yachts first – something which is one of the most important roles expected of a broke by their clientele. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> however, we have our ‘Deep Data department’ that sources data from all over the world through various custom developed applications as well as significant human resources, making sure our brokers have the most accurate and acute information in the industry, as well as having it first.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219126/image/large-206b550a22422538d353d3e1d1b64044.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219126">“If you strip it down to its basic tenets, the world of yacht broking is an information and facilitation business,” says Ziriakus. “The value of data within the yachting industry can be pivotal to a company’s success.” This could not have been more evident than in recent years, when major market high, such as 2021 and early 2022, saw scares supply and very few superyachts of pedigree were hitting the market. N&amp;J’s investment in data has enabled them to ride the sector wave with massive success, including reporting recently that its brokers sold 36% more yachts on average per broker than its closest competitor in 2022, selling a yacht almost every 48 hours during 2022.When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> isn't in the news for its extensive catalogue of sales, the brokerage house is stealing the limelight with partnership after partnership, and for Ziriakus this has also been one of the greatest growth assets for the company. “The strategic partnerships team has been working hard to build deep, multi-year partnerships with other brands that go far beyond simply sharing a logo or sponsoring events. It has truly been a business development drive to build powerful PR campaigns, events and activations that work directly with UHNW client segments. With the carefully selected and powerful partners that we have, for example NetJets and Airbus, we have created an integrated programme to offer clients a wider array of services, and it has been a phenomenal success at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">Northrop &amp; Johnson</a>.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/35345/image/large-3227dab3db722f3690b5e19a306f889e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/35345">The multifaceted approach <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> employs is just as strong in its marketing. Content creation is a leading strategy for the brand, and it employs not just one but five videographers and editors who shoot high end productions of yachts all over the world. While this isn’t in and of itself particularly revolutionary, the work the production team does with former broker David Seal is.Seal runs a YouTube channel for the company called Yachts for Sale, and shoots video content for the brokerage firm. The true value lies in the business development opportunities that arise from coverage on such a popular channel. “These infotainment-style videos are a fantastic asset,” explains Ziriakus, “not only because we create cool and interesting content, but because we visit shipyards, talk to clients and experts, and that content directly brings in leads to both the brokerage and the charter departments. Clean data, strategic partnerships and video production are the three areas that we excel in, and which not every brokerage recognises as an asset or invests in as we do.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/214846/image/large-72c5c3de41c239666e2b50bdd062a55f.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/214846">Another key element to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a>’s success is the mindset of people first. What gulets are to Turkey and Croatia, dhows are to the United Arab Emirates. Wrought with tradition with builds dating back aeons – the dhows are an integral part of UAE culture and heritage and are still widely used today. This tradition has spurred on a strange phenomenon: wooden dhow-inspired superyachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262478/image/large-608b9781f319d0cefba1295d8e9e0f70.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262478">The first dhows that danced across the Red Sea and Indian Ocean were much thinner than they are today. Over the years they’ve stretched and expanded to offer more volume and more stability, but originally they were incredibly slender, packed with goods, darting from port to port.Fisherman and pearl divers had different requirements and needed space to carry their equipment and daily catches. Importantly, they also needed space for more people. These beamier boats are a common sight across the UAE and many are so engorged, swallowing entire restaurants to offer fine dining experiences for hundreds of guests at any given cruise.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262477/image/large-c292da7f2fb1c4adcbbbe9af10bd0569.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262477">The wooden superyachts infuse the two traditions. “The DNA of these superyachts relate just as much to the original dhows as they do to the wide beam and voluminous modern ones,” Mahmoud Itani of IR Yachts told SuperYacht Times. “In this region, onboard space is really important as people want to go out with large groups of friends; usage is very different to Europe.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263196/image/large-96a02755f154b9edeb1b5b06b318e78d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263196">"These yachts are hard to trace as they’re custom-built for individual clients and rarely go on the market – or to any shows, for that matter. “I’ve been attending and organising the Dubai International Boat Show for more than 10 years now, and I can’t remember ever seeing a single superyacht on display that was built out of wood,” Itani reflected.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262487/image/large-807cf5d601fc605e401b8d6626a29e8a.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262487"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262484/image/large-ab44a56f02225eb532c9637ba2f5eaf7.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262484"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262485/image/large-675093ccd1a8dc465dee62fd80015b59.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262485">It makes sense too, as these yachts are rarely – if ever – put up for charter, kept in private use away from the public eye. Boat Shows aren’t relevant for the shipyard’s marketing purposes either, as these wooden dhow-inspired superyachts are invariably single units and quite often the only one built and delivered by that particular shipyard.“There are a few boat builders in the UAE that would build one of these yachts, but the design rarely comes from their in-house team. After meeting their own design team, the client will then approach a shipyard in either Al Jadaf or, more recently, Dubai maritime city,” Itani explained. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262497/image/large-ea48a1afc0b6a7773c138f1d503e36bb.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262497"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262494/image/large-c54ef33378f581c876b5bc98b37142df.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262494">We believe there could be as many as 10 in and around the region, the largest of which is on the market listed with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bush & Noble (Company)">Bush &amp; Noble</a>. The unnamed 50-metre Full Custom wooden superyacht was delivered in 2020 and undertook a maintenance appointment last year, which included a complete repaint with a high gloss clear coat. She’s constructed with a teak hull and GRP superstructure, which has then been clad with teak for that traditional look and feel. Henderson Marine International designed and engineered her.With a beam of 10.56, she’s a metre and a half wider than the average 50-metre motor yacht built after 2018. And once onboard it’s the first thing you notice. She’s cavernous and has been styled with the more familiar trappings, all sourced from Italy at “no expense spared,” as central agent <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bush & Noble (Company)">Bush &amp; Noble</a> explain. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262479/image/large-3b074acd794dfdc3701713a1994606a3.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262479">The main saloon is home to many seating areas for socialising, a breakfast bar, two screening areas and a formal dining area. She can also host five crew in five cabins.When asked about the buying profile for this superyacht, Bret Noble of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bush & Noble (Company)">Bush &amp; Noble</a> anticipates the most attention from Qatar. "There are many well-built traditional dhows in the region," Noble explained. "Qatar is really the number one region for these boats. But they're also not an uncommon sight in and around the UAE. The 50-metre Full Custom superyacht is unique though and interesting for the Australasian market."&nbsp;The second largest known wooden superyacht is the 47.55-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4428" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tiger47.55m (156'0&quot;)Unknown2009">Tiger</a>, delivered in 2009 and currently berthed in Abu Dhabi.
