Luxury Italian sports car manufacturer Ferrari has announced its plans to launch a sailing team under the guidance of yachtsman Giovanni Soldini.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/299876/image/large-d262b5e233009599a1d27d1b413d46f1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/299876">In addition to competing on race tracks worldwide, the Maranello-based company aims to delve into this new venture to strengthen its technological expertise and advance on its continuous path of knowledge. &nbsp;In a statement released today, the “Prancing Horse” brand chairman John Elkann said: “We are about to embark on an exciting journey that will expand our racing soul. With this new competitive challenge, motivated by our innovative capacity and commitment to sustainability, we will push beyond current boundaries.”This unique project aims to utilise Ferrari’s cutting-edge technologies, from conception and engineering to realisation. Luca Bassani’s evident passion for yachting, whether sail or power, and commitment to innovation have not diminished in the 20 or more years that I’ve known him. The marketplace has changed in that time, however. Demand for large sailing yachts has declined and many of Luca’s ideas, once considered radical, have been appropriated by other designers and builders, becoming more mainstream in the process. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a>’s own destiny was transformed when it became part of Ferretti Group in 2019. I was curious at the time whether being part of a larger organisation would dilute the disruptive streak that has always been part of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a> DNA. It’s a fine line and the semi-custom wallywind 110 aims to combine the best of both. Is it also a way of luring more owners into the world of sailing?Yes, because I think more good cruising sailing yachts is what the world needs right now; I mean both the world of yachting and the world of sustainability, as the only way to go around the world in a truly sustainable way is by sailboat. In terms of our strategic planning, it’s definitely a fast cruiser. When I started the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a> Class in 1999 as a way for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a> maxi yachts to race against each other within the framework of larger regattas, the boats became more racer-cruisers because everyone really enjoyed the racing and wanted to win. Today I think the word ‘racer’ puts people off and the market has shrunk, but there is still a reasonable market for performance cruising yachts. We know that after the last financial crisis the market for large sailing yachts decreased rapidly and didn’t recover like the motorboats. It’s still a difficult market, which is why I think we have to focus on comfort as well as speed.You say the sailing market didn’t really recover after 2008 – why is that do you think?First of all, it’s a generational thing. Younger people today want to get to where they’re going quickly, and sailing is not about that. Beyond that, sailing yachts have been hit by inflation more than the motor yachts because the production numbers are much smaller, so you don’t have the economy of scale. It’s understandable that if you’re not a sailor and haven’t grown up with sailing, when you have the means to buy a large yacht you want to make it a reasonable investment. I’ve always said that yacht owners feel guilty when they buy, so a way of justifying that sense of guilt is to spend less and get more, and with a motor yacht you get more volume for less money.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/330367/image/large-36284b1a25f02f91fb2ac317084f35f1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/330367">You’ve described the wallywind 110 as “the best&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a>&nbsp;sailing yacht ever delivered.” Why? &nbsp;&nbsp;Because in terms of performance it lacks for nothing. The other day <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12312" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galma33.42m (109'8&quot;)Wally2024">Galma</a> was sailing in 26-30 knots of breeze with one small reef in the mainsail and they were making 22-23 knots, which for a cruising yacht with no gennaker is a lot, so the excitement is there. But at the same time the boat offers much more comfort, mainly on deck where you spend most of your time. You have 80 square metres of lounging space, which is comparable to a motor yacht. The deck is flush with no steps, the seating is designed so you can be comfortable to windward or leeward when tacking, and the bimini remains under the boom so you can also be in the shade. How will Wally production be organised in the future?I think we’re now placed to be able to streamline our production more efficiently. We are not going to transfer all our ranges to Ravenna, but for sure the wallywhy and wallywind series will be built there, while the wallytender and wallypower ranges will remain in Forlì because it makes more sense to build where you have the specialised facilities and personnel.&nbsp;You also have the bigger wallywind 130 and 150 in the pipeline. Will they still be full carbon?Definitely. Ten years ago we built 51-metre Better Place, which is full carbon and even with a big deckhouse is quite fast in light winds. There’s no way we’ll abandon carbon up to 60-65 metres, I would say. Actually, I don’t see any reason to build beyond that size, because then you become a kind of motorsailer and that’s not what Wally is about. Any bigger, if still you want a sailing yacht that performs well in all condition, you find yourself at the edge of known technologies and everything becomes more risky and extremely expensive. Beyond a certain size I’ve always said it makes more sense to have a fleet of yachts, so you have a comfortable, reasonably sized motor yacht, and a sailing yacht to enjoy the sailing part. That for me is the solution that makes most sense.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/252036/image/large-53fb6f24820fa77b17c19ace4f4bf5dd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/252036">You also presented the new wallywhy100 motor yacht in Cannes this autumn. Are we likely to see bigger models in the series that take advantage of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a>’s capacity to build in steel and aluminium?&nbsp;I hope so and we’ve have discussed a strategy to go bigger. But the whole purpose of design and innovation is to offer a better product; it’s not about change for the sake of it. I never set out to be a designer, but despite the fact there’s a huge choice of motor yachts out there I believe there are still some things that can be done better to improve the quality of life on board. How do you fill that gap now he has stepped down?You know, as a sailor it was Stefano who pushed to have <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a> become part of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a>. We became friends and built up a good working relationship over the last five years, so he will be missed. Reflecting on the origins of the Velarca 135 concept, Sami revealed that the idea emerged on a sunny day in August 2021 in Helsinki’s Kaivopuisto Park. Accompanied by an advertising agency and several bottles of champagne, the team were spurred by a bold vision. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242232/image/large-8fd4ddc1c0153b0949334960523201b4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242232">“We knew that motor yachts dominate the superyacht market with over 90 percent market share, which also means they produce most of the greenhouse gas emissions. So, we decided there and then to start selling sailing yachts to the motor yacht clientele,” Sami explained. This marked not only the birth of Velarca 135 but also the formation of a business model that would allow <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> to enter the superyacht market, without a designer or shipyard already in place.One of the cornerstones of the Velarca 135 design is sustainability, a principle that Sami was determined to uphold without compromising on luxury. “Sustainability is a tricky word,” elaborated Sami. “Many luxury products have a longer lifespan because they are valuable, beautiful, and timeless. When asked about the design process, Sami recounted the strategic decisions that guided the yacht’s development. “We consulted well-known yacht brokers in the Mediterranean to understand what their customers prefer in terms of yacht size and amenities. We also prioritised safety and simplicity, ensuring that even a less experienced crew could manage the yacht with ease.” The design was then handed over to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/164" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Beiderbeck Designs (Company)">Beiderbeck Designs</a>, who were given full artistic freedom. “In my opinion, the result was not only quite clever and practical, but also very pretty,” Sami added.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216494/image/large-d23ae9f9a161e73b660e7a5c5bafcac6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216494">The Isola Corvus vision and challengesAs a relatively new player in the superyacht industry, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> brings a fresh perspective, heavily influenced by Sami’s background in offshore racing. “We dared to do what we wanted without asking too many questions,” Sami explained, reflecting on the fearless approach that has driven the company forward. One significant innovation influenced by Sami’s racing experience was the rig design. “I was never a fan of the Chinese gybes, as the boom had the potential to cause damage or injury by slamming from side to side when jibing; so I wanted to eliminate the risks of this happening completely. The Velarca rig is simply a boomless, rope free, two masted solution, with two rolling and self-tacking jibs on each mast and a third jib in an inverted position between the two masts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216499/image/large-e6b6b2919ec59af2b44f6642ef4ec58f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216499">Despite their innovative spirit, the journey hasn’t been without challenges. “We didn’t have a designer or shipyard partner in the beginning, both of which are must-haves to even launch a design,” Sami admitted. However, a fortunate connection with Finnish superyacht hydraulics entrepreneur Nadine Proctor opened doors, leading to a partnership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/164" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Beiderbeck Designs (Company)">Beiderbeck Designs</a>. “By January 2022, the design was ready to launch,” Sami recalled. The next challenge was finding a suitable shipyard, a process that ultimately led them to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5728" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Knierim Yachtbau (Company)">Knierim Yachtbau</a> in Germany, known for their expertise in building lightweight sailing yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216493/image/large-b5f0be620cd828b3d8d58c4e1938e36a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216493">“Velarca is structurally more challenging to build than a motor yacht, so the shipyard must have experience in building demanding lightweight sailing yacht designs,” Sami explained. He also highlighted Knierim’s involvement in the wind power industry as an added benefit that aligns with their sustainability goals.&nbsp;However, marketing a yacht that blurs the lines between motor yachts and sailing yachts presents its own set of challenges. The superyacht sector, however, seems more willing to experiment with alternative fuels,” Sami observed. These vessels may now apply directly to the Ports and Maritime Affairs Directorate should they choose not to utilise a local shipping agent.This latest measure aligns with Bahrain’s long-term development agenda, guided by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and overseen by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister. Bader Hood Al Mahmood, Undersecretary for Ports and Maritime Affairs, outlined that the guide provides clear instructions on obtaining navigation permits, including detailed pre-arrival, entry, and departure requirements.Among the key stipulations, visiting yachts must operate an Automatic Identification System (AIS), hold valid third-party insurance, and submit documentation including the yacht’s registration, a navigation or safety certificate, and lists of passengers and crew. Initial approvals for entry can be expected within 24 hours of application submission.Yachts approaching Bahraini waters are required to notify the Maritime Control Office via VHF Channel 74 or telephone, and proceed to one of five designated maritime inspection points, including Qatari Waters Cutoff and Fasht Al Jarrim. Following this, vessels must report to one of the listed entry ports – such as Al Dur Port or Waves Marina – to complete immigration and customs procedures.Notably, Bahrain has included leisure marinas among the official entry ports, streamlining arrival processes and underscoring the country's readiness to accommodate yacht tourism. This reputation stems from a strong network of marine professionals, skilled tradespeople and shipyards like ours that are equipped to support complex projects. It’s a combination of factors: high-quality workmanship, cost-effectiveness, and a growing capacity for technical work.The Thai government has also recognised the potential of this sector and is actively supporting its development. There is a clear initiative to position Phuket as a major hub for marine tourism and those efforts are helping to elevate its standing on the global yachting map.Lifestyle plays a significant role as well. Both owners and crew enjoy spending time in Phuket, which is one of Asia’s most popular tourism destinations. The wide range of activities available makes longer refit periods feel less like downtime and more like an opportunity, contributing to a positive experience that often leads to repeat visits.That said, the region is still developing. There’s room for improvement - particularly in streamlining infrastructure, customs procedures, logistics and tax frameworks. But the momentum is real.
