Announced at Yachts Miami Beach 2016 which drew to a close at the beginning of this week, the Ferretti Group has extended their Custom Line semi-displacement series with the introduction of the Navetta 42. The news comes shortly after the launch of the new Navetta 37 and, once completed, will be the largest Custom Line Navetta ever built. Spread over four decks, the vessel is also the first Custom Line yacht over 300 GT. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/158952/image/large-30681256cd79741de20b7df8ae4b4d73.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/158952"> She has been designed by  Studio Zuccon Int.l Project and developed by the in-house Engineering Department. Her interior is completely customisable, and comes with the option to accommodate guests over either four VIP cabins on the lower deck, or five double cabins. The generous owner’s suite will be located on the main deck. A crew of up to eight are also accommodated for on board, with the private captain’s cabin located on the upper deck with direct access to the pilot house. One of her most attractive characteristics is the extensive beach club which is totally dedicated to leisure activities, with a side opening garage and water toys launching system. In regards to her performance, prospective owners have the opportunity to choose from five different engine options. She will offer a transatlantic range in excess of 3,000 nm at a cruising speed of 10 knots. The first Navetta 42 is expected to be launched in 2018.

Reflecting on the origins of the Velarca 135 concept, Sami revealed that the idea emerged on a sunny day in August 2021 in Helsinki’s Kaivopuisto Park. Accompanied by an advertising agency and several bottles of champagne, the team were spurred by a bold vision. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242232/image/large-8fd4ddc1c0153b0949334960523201b4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242232">“We knew that motor yachts dominate the superyacht market with over 90 percent market share, which also means they produce most of the greenhouse gas emissions. So, we decided there and then to start selling sailing yachts to the motor yacht clientele,” Sami explained. This marked not only the birth of Velarca 135 but also the formation of a business model that would allow <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> to enter the superyacht market, without a designer or shipyard already in place.One of the cornerstones of the Velarca 135 design is sustainability, a principle that Sami was determined to uphold without compromising on luxury. “Sustainability is a tricky word,” elaborated Sami. “Many luxury products have a longer lifespan because they are valuable, beautiful, and timeless. When asked about the design process, Sami recounted the strategic decisions that guided the yacht’s development. “We consulted well-known yacht brokers in the Mediterranean to understand what their customers prefer in terms of yacht size and amenities. We also prioritised safety and simplicity, ensuring that even a less experienced crew could manage the yacht with ease.” The design was then handed over to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/164" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Beiderbeck Designs (Company)">Beiderbeck Designs</a>, who were given full artistic freedom. “In my opinion, the result was not only quite clever and practical, but also very pretty,” Sami added.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216494/image/large-d23ae9f9a161e73b660e7a5c5bafcac6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216494">The Isola Corvus vision and challengesAs a relatively new player in the superyacht industry, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> brings a fresh perspective, heavily influenced by Sami’s background in offshore racing. “We dared to do what we wanted without asking too many questions,” Sami explained, reflecting on the fearless approach that has driven the company forward. One significant innovation influenced by Sami’s racing experience was the rig design. “I was never a fan of the Chinese gybes, as the boom had the potential to cause damage or injury by slamming from side to side when jibing; so I wanted to eliminate the risks of this happening completely. The Velarca rig is simply a boomless, rope free, two masted solution, with two rolling and self-tacking jibs on each mast and a third jib in an inverted position between the two masts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216499/image/large-e6b6b2919ec59af2b44f6642ef4ec58f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216499">Despite their innovative spirit, the journey hasn’t been without challenges. “We didn’t have a designer or shipyard partner in the beginning, both of which are must-haves to even launch a design,” Sami admitted. However, a fortunate connection with Finnish superyacht hydraulics entrepreneur Nadine Proctor opened doors, leading to a partnership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/164" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Beiderbeck Designs (Company)">Beiderbeck Designs</a>. “By January 2022, the design was ready to launch,” Sami recalled. The next challenge was finding a suitable shipyard, a process that ultimately led them to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5728" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Knierim Yachtbau (Company)">Knierim Yachtbau</a> in Germany, known for their expertise in building lightweight sailing yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216493/image/large-b5f0be620cd828b3d8d58c4e1938e36a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216493">“Velarca is structurally more challenging to build than a motor yacht, so the shipyard must have experience in building demanding lightweight sailing yacht designs,” Sami explained. He also highlighted Knierim’s involvement in the wind power industry as an added benefit that aligns with their sustainability goals.&nbsp;However, marketing a yacht that blurs the lines between motor yachts and sailing yachts presents its own set of challenges. The superyacht sector, however, seems more willing to experiment with alternative fuels,” Sami observed. He believes that the industry will eventually recognise the value of sailing and sail-assisted designs as viable solutions for reducing emissions.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. Velarca 135: Bridging the gap between motor yachts and sailing yachts

Italian yacht designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gian Paolo Nari (Company)">Gian Paolo Nari</a> has unveiled a new 43.4-metre motor yacht concept in partnership with Turkish shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/59" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aegean Yacht (Company)">Aegean Yacht</a>. My focus was on simplicity, linearity, and a clean composition, blending horizontal and vertical elements to establish a profile that captures the unique signature we set out to achieve."<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/326278/image/large-5cf4072b0926db21d3eb9383031cdc60.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/326278">Both versions of the yacht include an aft garage with side-door launch capability. Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO) has unveiled the first details of a superyacht conversion concept for the 78-metre merchant vessel Western Spirit. Constructed as a Ice Class Seismic Survey ship by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ulstein Verft AS (Company)">Ulstein</a> in Norway in 1993, the conversion, which has been conceived by Captain Grant Maughan, will see the ship converted into an expedition superyacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321386/image/large-0fc882df9b89c26f5ed7c0e9d1d41568.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321386">“A lot of the yacht industry is about aesthetics; nice compound curves, stainless steel, and glass areas”, expedition yacht designer Captain Grant Maughan explained. “Some of it is only useful in a benign environment with good weather. The vessels I prefer to design are more hardy for long distance voyages and operating in areas like the Arctic or Antarctic.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321389/image/large-c5d026b5568fc172f7cd9e4a71b7d635.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321389">An example of a “more robust and user-friendly design” is the concept for Western Spirit’s conversion, depicted in renderings. Doggersbank, in partnership with its European partner <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop & Johnson (Company)">Northrop &amp; Johnson</a>, has unveiled two new additions to its explorer series at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/210" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2024">Cannes Yachting Festival</a>: the Doggersbank 90 Offshore and 105 Offshore.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/326709/image/large-95afb28e766ca8d60518a18d45359561.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/326709">The Doggersbank brand was revived by Dutch studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a> last year. The yachts are built at the Dutch based yard, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5951" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Altena Yachting (Company)">Altena</a>.Designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a>, both models enjoy a significant increase in space and guest features compared to previous models. These include optimised guest staterooms and enlarged crew accommodation for the 90 Offshore. The 105 Offshore, the flagship of &nbsp;the range, will include an additional ensuite guest suite bringing the total to four, including a full-beam owner’s suite, and a third crew room bringing the total to three. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/326710/image/large-58b3c3ff2a21f0f2a51a12cfb1eba148.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/326710">Joost Mertens, Sales Director at Doggersbank, commented on the development, saying, "We recognised the necessity to introduce larger models that can better integrate modern technologies and provide more space for guests and crew.” He further noted, “Our collaboration with Patrick Coote of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop & Johnson (Company)">Northrop &amp; Johnson</a>, which has been both long-term and productive, identified a market niche for capable, custom-built explorers supported by expert naval architecture. This insight encouraged us to enhance our existing designs and create a model that fulfils this specific demand."<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/326711/image/large-b0373affe8e7cf79c68a6e031b7a9f8d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/326711">According to Mertens, the enhancements in the new models were largely influenced by feedback from Doggersbank owners, who value the ability to host up to eight guests for adventurous maritime journeys.
