Francois Zuretti is one of the elder statesmen of yacht design. In a rare interview opportunity, SuperYacht Times was invited to visit his home and studio in the south of France.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251947/image/large-a36ab6a395be1d60a171671d61215df0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251947">Modest, unassuming and a little shy, Francois Zuretti may be one the most prolific and distinguished names in the world of superyacht design, but he likes to keep a low profile. In fact, our recent video profile of the French interior designer was the first of its kind, period. Not that he is in need of the publicity, having worked with all the top shipyards on some of the largest superyachts afloat.Zuretti began his design career in the mid-‘70s with&nbsp;Triad Condas, a Paris-based company specialising in the interior design of Middle Eastern palaces, which led to him working for the King of Morocco. He set up his own studio in 1987, first in Geneva before moving to Nice to be closer to his yachting clients on the French Riviera. Interestingly, he chose not to relocate to Monaco, not least because he wanted his company to retain its distinctly French identity.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/207091/image/large-d9a7f07880c0f54ee7b05372ceeb1db7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/207091"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/13573/image/large-0c51f21446e9cbaee949065f50e04469.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/13573">Zuretti’s first yacht interior was for Eco (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/901" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zeus74.5m (244'5&quot;)Blohm & Voss GmbH1991">Zeus</a>), the iconic 75-metre motor yacht designed by Martin Francis and delivered by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Blohm & Voss GmbH (Company)">Blohm + Voss</a> in 1991. While Eco was in build, he was also working on 46-metre Shamwari (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/532" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mistress46.0m (150'11&quot;)Benetti SpA1991">Mistress</a>), the first project in a string of collaborations with the Italian builder that culminated in 65-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/607" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ambrosia65.0m (213'3&quot;)Benetti SpA2006">Ambrosia</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>’s first diesel-electric superyacht in 2006.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/607" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ambrosia65.0m (213'3&quot;)Benetti SpA2006">Ambrosia</a>’s sumptuous Art Deco interior for a client in Hong Kong may be lavish by today’s standards, but at the time it was considered the height of luxury for its rare and expensive materials and exquisite craftsmanship. Zuretti’s personal tastes could not be more different and are best reflected in his own home, which he designed himself. Decidedly modernist and rational, the stunning building is set into the hills between Cap-d'Ail and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/174091/image/large-ad1b7760b6be3a55da0ed04ceb3dfb13.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/174091">“Tastes have changed over the past 20 years, but the market has changed more,” says Zuretti from a sitting room with stunning views of the coast through floor-to-ceiling windows. “New clients have brought new developments. Before my clients had a stronger relationship with the sea, the boats were smaller and people were closer to the water. Life aboard a 45-metre yacht is centred around the sea, but on a 150-metre superyacht you need other activities like spas and cinemas. We’re working on a project at the moment that has a full-size tennis court, for example. I’m not sure it’s all good for the yachting business, but it has certainly helped to develop new materials and concepts.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223388/image/large-074e023730e2605abe0ba60d1240f0b7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223388">Zuretti started out with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> but quickly moved on to work with the leading north European shipyards, including <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lurssen</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>. Sadly, most of these yachts are strictly private and the designer is unable to discuss them, but his studio has been involved in multiple projects over 100 metres. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/18" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels (Company)">Amels</a> is a more recent client and Zuretti devised the interior of its 78-metre custom project <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6826" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Energy77.8m (255'3&quot;)Amels2022">Energy</a> with exterior design by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a>that left the shipyard last July. The studio describes the project as “the perfect combination of good production processes and bespoke design.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/174094/image/large-41a16e4a10044301f253ba0c6f1e6eff.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/174094">Watch:&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/55899" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Video: At the studio with Francois Zuretti of Zuretti Interior Design (2022-09-12 14:00:00 +0200)">Video: At the studio with Francois Zuretti of Zuretti Interior Design</a>Zuretti is still the creative heart of the company that bears his name, but the daily operations are overseen by his general manager, Sebastien Gey, who is responsible for a 50-strong multinational staff that occupies an entire floor of a stately building in the Belle Epoque style close to the seafront in Nice. A civil architect and designer, but also a naval architect and passionate sailor, it is Sebastien’s job to manage a team that has up to a dozen superyacht and residential projects on the go at any one time.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261469/image/large-f07ee8303e98a7c24f4cbff8ad5e5c31.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261469">“To offer the best quality you need the best team,” says Sebastien. “We have very talented designers, architects and project managers. We create all our own renderings in-house, and we have the best people for that as well. Managing all these people and bringing them together to realise projects for our clients is challenging, but a talent we need to have as a company is to find the right people and build a good team.”The residential and yacht design teams worked in separate offices, but a few years ago it was decided to bring them together to encourage the exchange of skills and ideas (Zuretti explains, only half-jokingly, that the move also avoided petty in-house rivalries as the yacht designers were prone to think of themselves as a cut above their residential design colleagues). Since the beginning, however, the company has remained true to its name and avoided the temptation to expand into designing yacht exteriors. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261468/image/large-0a0c6af22bd2981b49240226df114d60.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261468">“The temptation is always there, of course,” says Sebastien, “but we are most successful when we work with the best exterior designers. We try to be the best for the interiors, so the combination means we can create the best project for our clients.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261467/image/large-9cc7a2078af026e6b7d4c7378fbbf676.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261467">A custom interior is the result of an owner’s personal taste and the designer’s creative vision, but whatever a client’s preferred style, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/67" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zuretti Interior Design (Company)">Zuretti Interior Design</a>aims to bring to each project what Sebastien calls ‘veracity’, or a thorough understanding of the chosen style.“We’ve worked on very classic and very contemporary, even minimalist, interior designs,” he says. “In each case, you have to approach the project firstly with passion, but also with knowledge. So we thoroughly study a particular style to capture its reality. Of course, it may have to be adapted to suit the spaces and dimensions, but we’re always looking for veracity – this is very important.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261465/image/large-92fbebb785ce71627038cd6797c9d0b3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261465">One of Zuretti’s sons, Matthieu, works in the company as procurement director &amp; quality manager. His job was made especially difficult when Covid precautions made it more difficult to meet in person with suppliers, and the challenges continue post-pandemic at a time when supply chains are so unpredictable.“Two thirds of our meetings need to be face-to-face, because you have to see the materials and see how something works.,” he explains. “Pictures or videos can never give you the same feeling you get by opening the door of a cabinet, when you can feel if it works smoothly or there is something rattling inside. You need to be on site to control the quality.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261466/image/large-92717969b1d93f562038b141e8b30e38.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261466">After more than 30 years in the business and now aged 70, Zuretti is looking to take a step back and prepare Matthieu and Sebastien to take over the running of the business – by no means a straightforward task for someone addicted to design that finds it hard to delegate. A new office in Dubai has been tasked with developing the Middle Eastern market and the firm is growing its superyacht clientele in the Americas. Having designed so many custom furniture pieces over the years, the studio is also pondering its own branded line of high-end furniture. &nbsp;“I have so many stamps in my passport from around the world, but each of those represent a day or two spent with a client,” he says. “I was always too busy to explore the countries I’ve been to, so now I’d like to enjoy life a little more. I think I still have a lot to offer my team, but I have to learn to leave them alone to create the Zuretti of tomorrow. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/809" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tillberg Design of Sweden (Company)">Tillberg Design of Sweden</a>, the titan of maritime design, is weighing into the superyacht sector with a newly formed yacht division – and it’s nothing short of exciting.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/809" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tillberg Design of Sweden (Company)">Tillberg Design of Sweden</a> – aka TDoS – is a formidable force. Its prowess is well respected in the cruise industry, with a portfolio exceeding 300 major luxury projects. The studio has been steadily fortifying its presence in the superyacht sector in recent years – and it’s here to stay.&nbsp;Following the release of a number of astounding superyacht designs, and news of a merger with the Italian design studio, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a>, we thought it high time to catch up with Daniel Nerhagen, Yacht Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/809" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tillberg Design of Sweden (Company)">TDoS</a>, to learn more about this powerhouse from the cruise sector.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260362/image/large-9eb51267dae054d3bf8152d199ce214c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260362">What is&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/809" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tillberg Design of Sweden (Company)">TDoS</a>’ origin story?&nbsp;We were founded in 1964 by a true pioneer in the cruise industry: Robert Tillberg. The studio was initially eponymously named but quickly blossomed with a growing team, it was only apt for the name of the studio to encompass this change; hence, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/809" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tillberg Design of Sweden (Company)">TDoS</a> was born.&nbsp;I’m lucky enough as a designer to have worked with Robert for a few years in the late 90s, but my experience isn’t unique in the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/809" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tillberg Design of Sweden (Company)">TDoS</a> studio. We have at least six or seven designers that have been working at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/809" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tillberg Design of Sweden (Company)">TDoS</a> for more than 20 years now, and we’ve also seen a number of second generation designers join the studio. It is remarkable.&nbsp;This longevity of our studio is not only found in the team, but also with the principles that we stand behind. Sustainability is one such principle, and we’ve kept it as a lodestar since at least the early 2000s, as such I was slightly taken aback when I first came into yachting and I kept hearing that we need to change, when the commercial sector has been on this train of thought for many, many years now. Our in-house design team has spent years, if not decades, researching and developing green solutions.&nbsp;Even though cruise ships have predominantly been our forte, we have built a portfolio of exterior and interior designs of yachts over the years. Some of our first sailing yacht designs hit the water as early as the 1970s and we’ve had our yacht designs (exterior and interior) launched well into the 2000s.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260365/image/large-4b4011da67beba38853bfcc7b587f3d1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260365"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/809" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tillberg Design of Sweden (Company)">TDoS</a>&nbsp;now has a strong presence in yachting, what drove this decision? A few years ago we designed a line of boutique “yachts” for The Ritz-Carlton with the level of luxury synonymous with its brand. The series of small cruise vessels each accommodates up to 298 guests across 149 well-appointed suites, brimming with state-of-the-art and top tier amenities. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection was successful in its own right – but it also garnered a lot of attention from other companies. It opened the door, if you will, and led to a lot of round-table discussions in-house. We decided yachting may be a good move for us; and in 2018 we opened a dedicated yacht division at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/809" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tillberg Design of Sweden (Company)">TDoS</a>. A few years later when COVID-19 hit, the commercial sector pretty much ground to a halt, and we used this period to ramp up activities in this newly founded division. It was a busy period for us. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/253660/image/large-38b63f56e9041d7bf538b99c991b9acd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/253660">Does bridging the game between the commercial and luxury sector give&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/809" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tillberg Design of Sweden (Company)">TDoS</a>&nbsp;an edge? &nbsp;We’re experienced in designing vessels that may have around 5,000 guests onboard. We have mastered the logistics of embarking, disembarking and ensuring that the vessel is operational for that many people, which is extremely complex. Superyachts, on the other hand, have the luxury of time and can take a few days to prepare. Our experience and our designs will help streamline this whole process in new and novel ways.&nbsp;The commercial space also requires a keen eye for designing in the most cost effective way. Now, and this is important, we’re not talking about materials or the aesthetic here. We’re talking about the design and general arrangement itself. When you're building bigger boats everything that is expensive, exponentially explodes because you're building 100 suites instead of four suites. We then look at design in a different way.&nbsp;We’re a big studio with deep resources and we’re used to turning projects around quickly. We have a degree of versatility that small design houses can’t compete with. If a client approaches us for a new design we can always deliver, quickly. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/253657/image/large-112cb977ff4a705d79ecb2bdc1e22803.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/253657">Are there any new and exciting shipyards or suppliers that&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/809" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tillberg Design of Sweden (Company)">TDoS</a>&nbsp;can bring to yachting?&nbsp;This is an interesting topic because many of our longtime suppliers have two divisions in their company: one that focuses on high-end luxury and another that’s more commercial. We, naturally, work more closely with the commercial departments, but their colleagues are responsible for furnishing hotels, residentials and yachts. We have a strong network of suppliers built from the commercial space, but with access to top tier vendors.&nbsp;With the rate that yachts are growing in size, we’re moving into SOLAS territory – something that we’re very used to working with. The suppliers we use and the materials we source are SOLAS compliant and certified to meet these more stringent regulations.&nbsp;The commercial shipbuilders that we work with produce to the same standard as most yacht builders, if not a higher standard, as the vessels they produce need to be able to handle the wear and tear of 24 hours, 365 days of use – something unheard of in yachting. The quality of the materials aren’t to the same standard as what you’d find on a superyacht, naturally, but commercial shipyards have finessed the process to keep costs down. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224824/image/large-6b5bba40e3c9e3e7c47b5d72f45aaeb6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224824">What motivated&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6755" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Viken Group AB (Company)">Viken Group</a>’s acquisition of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a>&nbsp;and how will it be integrated into your business?After watching the market and looking at our core skills, we realised that we were lacking a key area if we wanted to deliver everything to our clients; the know-how about the 60-metre and below segment. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a> is extremely successful in this segment and the studio designs both custom and production yachts – the latter is something we have never done before. Hot Lab is also based in Italy and has a strong presence in Turkey – two markets which we haven’t yet entered.&nbsp;Joining the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6755" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Viken Group AB (Company)">Viken Group</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a> has access to different markets, different clients and are given an opportunity to expand and add larger yachts to its portfolio. It was a win-win situation for both Hot Lab and us. With <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a> in its folds, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6755" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Viken Group AB (Company)">Viken Group</a> now offers yacht designs from 60-foot to 60,000 GT, and thanks to the recent acquisition of Thalia Marine it also offers naval architecture for this whole spectrum. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224823/image/large-798b566c622e2ca838de96e5adf73239.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224823">One of the first yacht concepts unveiled by your Yacht Division was Aegir 2.0 – can you tell us a little bit about this design?&nbsp;We champion sustainability and carbon neutral sailing – and with Aegir 2.0 we placed our best foot forward. The nucleus of the design came from the 106.7-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4795" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Black Pearl106.7m (350'1&quot;)Oceanco2018">Black Pearl </a>– which is one of the most efficient yachts on the market – and we wanted to not only meet, but surpass its commitment. We invited Derek Munro, one of the Product Managers of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4795" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Black Pearl106.7m (350'1&quot;)Oceanco2018">Black Pearl</a>, to deliver a lecture series at our studios, and we learnt a great deal.Aegir 2.0 was born out of this commitment, and also from the realisation that if we were to really push for carbon neutral sailing then designers need to pen sailing yachts. We stepped up to the plinth and designed a wind-powered trimaran with hydrolics and a hybrid wind-electric propulsion system that recharges all batteries when under sail. While sustainability is at its core, Aegir 2.0 doesn’t skimp luxury. For one, it’s incredibly beamy so it offers more living space than that of a monohull from its category. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260364/image/large-22e3f619757645832b859a4a3b856c91.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260364">Since Aegir 2.0,&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/809" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tillberg Design of Sweden (Company)">TSoD</a>&nbsp;has released a number of unique concepts, can you share some of the inspiration behind these designs?&nbsp;Our conversations are fluid and our designs have come from the dialogues we’ve had in-house, and with our clients. The designs we’ve launched are pretty versatile, and to name but three, we designed the 60-metre explorer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/56716" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Introducing the 60m explorer yacht concept Mimer (2023-01-10 15:00:00 +0100)">Mimer</a> a few years ago, the 120-metre superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/55013" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Desert Pearl: An impressive 120m Custom Built new-build superyacht concept for sale (2022-04-25 09:30:00 +0200)">Desert Pearl</a>, earlier this year and also <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/54850" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Introducing Lycka: The 77m “happiness” superyacht by Nobiskrug & Tillberg Design of Sweden (2022-03-28 11:30:00 +0200)">the 77-metre superyacht Lycka</a> in collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/833" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Denison Yachting (Company)">Denison Yachting</a>.&nbsp;As is the nature of the industry, most of our projects are wrapped in strict NDAs so I have to keep pretty guarded. But <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/54850" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Introducing Lycka: The 77m “happiness” superyacht by Nobiskrug & Tillberg Design of Sweden (2022-03-28 11:30:00 +0200)">Lycka</a> I can divulge a little more about. An opportunity arose with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a> to do a design around one of its platforms. We took one of their technical platforms, which is already developed, and reimagined the general arrangement and added our flair to both the exterior and interior design. I’ve spoken with many serious builders and it was pleasing to hear that they know our company and our work. But, it’s true, we’re a fledgling company in the yachting community, a community that is very protected. That being said, we’ve had a great reception so far and have cleared the first hurdles. Tillberg Design of Sweden: A new heavy weight in superyacht design 

The Dutch superyacht designer Cor D. Rover was quite literally born on the water. “I was born aboard an inland barge like one of those you can see in this marina,” he casually told me waving to the run of traditional Dutch boats lined up outside his floating office on the Nieuw Maass river in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254388/image/large-1bd9fdd1f9d322a2e45dfe712159c47b.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254388">With the lights gently swaying above our heads as his floating office rode the undulating waves, he continued his story. “I’m one of six and all of us have a strong connection with the water. In the warmer months we were always swimming, sailing, or enjoying all types of water sports,” he said with deep nostalgia.As a Dutchman, Cor and his siblings lived a life not out of the ordinary; for anyone that’s visited the country or knows its inhabitants well, the waterways are much more than a picturesque backdrop. But not every Dutchman makes a career out of this lifestyle – in that regard, Cor is one of the few exceptions. “It nearly wasn’t to be though,” Cor chuckled. “I have always been interested in technology – everything that moves, in fact – and the plan was originally to become an aeroplane designer.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254402/image/large-9767d9531d56e118710729bee89861f3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254402">But he couldn’t shake the itch for ships and shipbuilding; living amongst the great yards just outside Rotterdam in Hardinxveld-Giessendam inspired him to stick to his roots. “I was born on a boat, lived close to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1821" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Yachting (Company)">Damen Yachting</a> and, really, ships have always been a major staple of my life,” Cor said. “It just made sense to pursue mechanical engineering and shipbuilding at university.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/118269/image/large-3fb2b240d2a5cdafb9a85edecc52836e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/118269">After graduating in 1986, Cor’s began to fill his notepads with yacht designs, working under the patronage of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Frank Mulder</a> for 11 years. In the small studio just outside of Amsterdam, Cor developed an apt penmanship for aesthetics and the clean exterior styling he’s known and praised for today.“Prior to joining <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Frank Mulder Design</a> my work was purely technical,” Cor confessed. “It was a steep learning curve getting a grasp on how to execute strong theoretical designs with clean aesthetics.” His work at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Frank Mulder Design</a> laid the foundations for his success, and after building a strong reputation within the industry Cor set out on his own, founding his eponymously named studio in 1997. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/15755/image/large-076fab1ff808b285a7f1c4d31162ea20.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/15755"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/15710/image/large-6a33de09be0a97c15d8b308069510a96.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/15710">To date, under his own insignia, Cor has designed 75 yachts 24-metres in length or longer and an astonishing number of smaller yachts. Out of those 75 larger yachts, 66 are currently in operation, the largest being the 67-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5659" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seasense67.0m (219'10&quot;)Benetti SpA2017">Seasense</a> built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> and delivered in 2017. But this superyacht will soon be superseded by an all-new 60-metre Ice Class explorer with 1,700 GT of interior volume – 525 GT more than <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5659" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seasense67.0m (219'10&quot;)Benetti SpA2017">Seasense</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254401/image/large-0ca6a11c0a5e7737148da28154bb431f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254401"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254399/image/large-037dcbb36984575a2047fa2846cc734d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254399">Cor was pretty guarded about this latest project but did confirm that the design had been finalised and approved by the client and will be built in the Netherlands. Another forthcoming project that Cor teased but was just as discreet about was a new full-custom 33-metre motor yacht that will also be built locally.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254386/image/large-22d7079e18cb37f60772e620532cb09e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254386">Working out of such a traditional enclave of the Netherlands, you’d expect his walls to be adorned with classic vessels – but this couldn’t be further from the truth. His 1930s office, originally used by the local police force before the Second World War, is a harbinger of the past.Yet the artistic black and white prints of his diverse fleet that fight for your attention, are anything but. The print that really steals the limelight, though, is an aerial top-down photograph of the radical 2021-delivered superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> anchored alongside her 36-metre superyacht vessel <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8874" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi Phantom36.0m (118'1&quot;)Alia Yachts2021">Phi Phantom</a>. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254390/image/large-61b304738131294fae91604c3a23212c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254390">The story of the 58.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> is a devastating story – and a tale that most of us know. Before she could embark on her maiden voyage and bask in the Mediterranean heat she visited London. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> was quickly pounced upon by the British authorities, as a consequence of Putin’s actions in Ukraine. Despite not being on the sanction list, the owner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> had his brand-new superyacht arrested – and, to this day, the legal battle persists. But the story that many of us don’t know is how she came to be.&nbsp;“A client approached me around five years ago who wanted a superyacht that was at once unusual and outstanding,” Cor explained. “The client loved technology and wanted only the best features onboard. I had only recently patented my ‘dump tank eliminating pool floor’ that makes use of an inflatable rubber seal to turn the pool into a ballast when not in use. Typically the pool water needs to be drained when the yacht’s cruising, but with our system a client can ‘lock the water’ in and move freely, saving both time and energy.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254394/image/large-31b8a0e91d96a1fe33e654940bd337eb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254394">Radical designs call for radical measures – and the client was all for it. “Let’s build a boat around the pool,” he exclaimed after Cor pitched the idea. But the rest of the design didn’t materialise until later that year.“One evening during a boat show in Beijing, Perry van Oossanen (founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen Naval Architects</a>) and I were sitting on the top floor of the hotel burning some hours, discussing projects. When I brought up this latest design we started to draw it out and landed on the idea of designing the world’s longest sub-500 GT superyacht – it was perfect for the project.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/211064/image/large-05f4888722b47787984d0074b815a890.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/211064">Perry van Oossanen incorporated his world-renowned Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) and oversaw the engineering of the project, while Cor D. Rover took charge of the styling. “Together we created an intriguing design that pushes boundaries,” Cor reflected.“It’s a record-breaking yacht that comes with compromises, as it has an extremely narrow bow. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> has all the characteristics of a sailing yacht, and we needed a builder with this expertise. A sailboat builder that’s used to optimising every cubic inch.” It then comes as no surprise that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> was approached for the project.&nbsp;“You don’t go to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> and ask to make the best deal in terms of costs, you go to Royal Huisman to build the best,” Cor said. “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> has an incredible pedigree and they were very happy to sign a major motor yacht contract, especially as sailing yachts are strangely a diminishing market.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254392/image/large-b7ea46706da7262c5c622dcaed61adef.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254392">With <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> being such a slender design, it was paramount to optimise living space. The London-based <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4998" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lawson Robb (Company)">Lawson Robb</a> took charge of her interior styling and created “a tranquil atmosphere that has an incredibly family-friendly general arrangement,” as Cor describes it. However, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> only carries a single rescue tender on the foredeck: all the paraphernalia is carried by the Alia-built support yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8874" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi Phantom36.0m (118'1&quot;)Alia Yachts2021">Phi Phantom</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/211063/image/large-a93164b8b90f4b30892b6f9b92fb000e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/211063">“Perry and I also worked together on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8874" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi Phantom36.0m (118'1&quot;)Alia Yachts2021">Phi Phantom</a> which we designed with a pure focus on practicality. While <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a> has all the onboard entertainment, the sub-300 GT <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8874" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi Phantom36.0m (118'1&quot;)Alia Yachts2021">Phi Phantom</a> has all the tenders, toys and additional fuel.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/212581/image/large-780bbfaeab36c973bac71affa43b8750.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/212581">Full-custom projects are only half of the operations at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Rover Design (Company)">Cor D. Rover Design</a> though, and the studio is perhaps best known for its work with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/119" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Horizon Yachts (Company)">Horizon Yachts</a>: a prolific builder that launches one FD Series yacht most months – and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Rover Design (Company)">Cor D. Rover</a> can be accredited to each of these builds. Currently, a total of 62 are built or in-build. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/212589/image/large-b91362d551b9c2a26c2952e5e6ce01eb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/212589">“We approached Horizon at the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show - 2023">Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show</a> in 2012 with a design that we believed perfect for a production series. Our design maximised the amount of real estate possible onboard a 24-metre platform, incorporating a five-stateroom layout that’s typically found on much larger yachts. John Lu, CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/119" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Horizon Yachts (Company)">Horizon</a>, saw the plans and immediately saw the potential: ‘Let’s build it!’ he declared there and then.” And the rest is history. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254395/image/large-b8325ba0aa8151d2b88130a53c9545ce.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254395">A major focus for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/119" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Horizon Yachts (Company)">Horizon Yachts</a> was to be family-friendly and a safe place to be on the water. “We created SUVs for the sea,” Cor reflected. “Aesthetically an SUV looks safe, sturdy and practical; clients feel protected when they’re onboard.” It wasn’t long until a number of other designers and builders were adopting style cues from the popular series; imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, after all. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/199549/image/large-d39010f9f0382e7c46327c85016a8ce4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/199549"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Rover Design</a> has since gone on to work with other shipyards, designing exclusive production series all around the world. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4910" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sirena Yachts (Company)">Sirena Yachts</a> in Turkey is another big client for Cor, and his studio has designed its entire fleet to date – not exterior this time, though, but interior. “My studio has grown over the years and, after losing a few big jobs to studios that offered both exterior and interior design, I expanded the team to offer the full suite of services: exterior and interior design.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254389/image/large-f1f509610c893494282f141cd9ae6392.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254389">During my visit, the team is made up of seven designers, one of whom is Cor’s daughter. It’s a small yet mighty team operating from a quaint traditional corner of the Netherlands, championing innovation and ground-breaking design.

Cor D. Rover talks radical yacht design: Phi, Phi Phantom and new undisclosed projects

The design and construction of superyachts is, without a doubt, the most exciting part of the yachting industry. It is the moment when designers and owners can collaborate to create something new and innovative, pushing forward the industry into new areas, or to build the dream escape for an individual to enjoy with family and friends. It is also the moment, however, where timelines can become disrupted, damages incurred and in the worst case scenarios, costs increased into astronomical sums. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/240704/image/large-761c64fb08c574904915134dedc2abd7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/240704">Not only does the latter situation frustrate owners and put shipyard’s at risk, it also dissuades individuals from future yacht ownership, which is damaging to the industry as a whole. It is for all of these reasons that proper research, thorough design and effective project management are key to successful superyacht design and construction, which most of all relies on skilled naval architecture.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen Naval Architects</a> have built a reputation of excellence over the decades, renowned for its innovative engineering and intense research and development which has helped build many of the global yachting fleet. However, the company offers far more than engineering alone and we spoke with Perry Van Oossanen and Niels Moerke, Managing Directors of the company, to find out what else the business can do for your superyacht build. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/240705/image/large-61ad7a783199aa38730b2e3894821212.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/240705">Why is it important to have naval architects involved from the very beginning of a superyacht project?In the past many superyacht projects were started without the involvement of a naval architect, but today more yards and designers are recognising the importance of involving architects to clarify their technical elements of the designs. It is a vital step to ensure the viability of the design before the involvement of a shipyard, and while some designers come from a naval architecture background, many do not have that training.&nbsp;If a naval architect gets on the table from the beginning, they will be able to ensure that plans are technically feasible, but they can also help to come up with new solutions alongside the designer.&nbsp;Often designers and owners want to do something new and innovative, but are unsure about the possibilities, we can help with this. We are currently undergoing this process for four or five projects and we see shipyards responding extremely positively to receiving a well developed plan, which in return serves the clients.&nbsp;What risks are involved when not engaging a naval architect?Money and time! If a plan is not well developed on a technical level before the contract is signed, that will immediately lead to a large number of change orders or a longer engineering process. It may also end up in a vessel quite unlike what the client initially envisioned and expected.&nbsp;This is more important now than ever, with new propulsion systems and alternative fuels being explored by many shipyard’s and clients. At Van Oossanen we have been working extensively to perfect the structure and operation of a variety of alternative fuels and are continuously undergoing research and development to make sure that they are safe when they are applied. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;What is your process when it comes to new design innovations?It all starts with listening to the client and asking questions to determine what is truly important for them, how they want to use the yacht, what is the preferred cruising area, etc. From here we can start with the layout from the technical side, doing some preliminary space planning and get all the deck arrangements right and provide that as an underlay for the designer to build upon.&nbsp;If the design itself comes with an innovative idea, which is not industry standard, we look at it from a regulatory standpoint. Then we look at the impact on the vessel’s stability, alongside a number of other potential risk factors which allows us to start calculating the feasibility of the design innovation. This is really vital at an early stage, both pre-contract and long before construction, to prevent any issues during the build process which can lead to expensive and time consuming amendments. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/240706/image/large-ed097ded8d8c1c5f26466037885babea.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/240706">When it comes to construction, how does&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen</a>’s project management offering work?When a shipyard becomes involved it is really important to listen to them, to find out how they build yachts, what standards they adhere to, what suppliers they use, all of which can impact how the project develops. We can then help to translate the wishes of the client and designer into a technical language that we share with the shipyard, assisting with risk management and retaining the high standards of the build. We are a bridge, connecting all parties, rather than working with one side or another.When it comes to running the project, it really comes down to managing the information, we manage the risks, evaluate the progress of the build and make sure that all the key stakeholders have the necessary information at the right time.As we said before, recognising potential issues as early as possible prevents costly changes at a later stage, creating a far more seamless process for the builder and the client. If project management is done properly, as it is at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen</a>, we can eradicate those changes completely, creating a far better experience for the client, who will consequently often stay within the industry for many years.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/240701/image/large-1b15eb6fd4f60f4aee1172557ddc700b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/240701">Can you go into more detail about the ‘Integrated Design Management’ process at Van Oossanen?Very often a client will have a representative, or a project manager like ours. That person is vital in the course of the project, and having someone with an engineering background provides even greater benefits, particularly when it comes to the practical aspects.&nbsp;When we talk about integrated design management we talk about managing the information flow and paper trail from all the way from concept design to construction, and we provide our own technical drawings to adequately prepare the shipyard and the suppliers.&nbsp;The most important thing when it comes to yacht design and construction is that the client’s wishes are understood and properly executed. I was drawn more to the world of physics and mechanics. Fast forward and having qualified and practiced as a naval architect for 26 years I find myself almost studying chemistry again – urrgh!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/233872/image/large-fafa9c273bd17f795a5a0b48f3b7c0bc.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/233872">So what is the chemistry that is challenging us? The answer is simple, carbon, or rather how to avoid it. The responsibility for answering this question must no longer be viewed as the domain of others, it is becoming a question that many professions are having to play a role in answering, whether they like it or not.The job of engineering superyachts to meet specific performance criteria for noise, speed, seakeeping or any other functional performance criteria is relatively simple. Being able to guide and advise clients on project strategy and technology choices to avoid obsolescence, deliver on sustainability aspirations, and avoid future regulatory traps is more complex, but in many ways an increasingly important skill.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/232627/image/large-8e0b7b2f24203564af9552e8d730348c.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/232627">(above: Lateral's widening research is now extending into land-based production of hydrogen)The question of carbon, and the skills to guide future choices, is not confined to our own domain of yachts / ships and the marine industry, it impacts all aspects of humanity, wherever energy is used. As stated in Vaclav Smil’s book on Energy &amp; Civilisation, “Energy is the only universal currency; it is necessary for getting anything done.”Humanity has undergone previous energy transitions, however the one that faces us is the hardest yet, as we are forced to downscale in terms of energy density, no one solution will fit all and we must adapt across all aspects of our lives to different solutions. The innovation needed to deliver these solutions is vast and we are now faced with a bewildering choice of strategies and technologies to pursue, some mature but many embryonic and of low readiness level at scale.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/232628/image/large-7492c6f2407892b823f366a9e8dde131.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/232628">Unfortunately there are no absolute answers as to which is correct for the application to superyachts. Many if not most will fail (such is the nature of innovation). How therefore do we become skilled in guiding our clients in the choices available to them? Even with on-point geopolitical insight, encyclopaedic knowledge of technical development across multiple industries, and access to significant innovation capital there is significant risk in making the wrong choices in the development of a high value asset such as a superyacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231512/image/large-e4a799cd097a2004ed12c9ceff461830.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231512">Part of the solution is to go back to school, thankfully (for me) not to the subject of chemistry, but science in general, and the notion of a hypothesis; a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.Part of our research, development and innovation programme in the area of energy system architecture is based on formulating hypotheses based on the limited absolute evidence and facts we have about the future, together with varying probable outcomes. Through a long term and repetitive programme of technical platform development we progressively test our hypotheses against the ever-changing real world of energy transition. In this way, step by step we are refining our strategies and independent and unbiased insight about how best to guide our clients in making the right choices.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/233871/image/large-29fce98953dcafa409a10cfd99039b45.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/233871">A key characteristic to avoid is that of bias. Where we believe in our own ideas (or indeed those of others) without any level of scepticism we are likely to be blinded by bias. This will lead us to derive a solution that is unlikely to be fit for the long term.To remove bias demands that we shed our technical egos, we need to stop engineering everything over and over again in the name of ‘bespoke’ and invest in progressive development. We also need to shift our perspective of how a yacht should be configured. The ultimate ‘yacht of the future’ will be very different in proportions, form and technical backbone than those of today. And through innovation it will also do more, while consuming less.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/228573/image/large-3184c9dd9a5827dfb4a306bc80cf062f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/228573">These are exciting times to be a naval architect, the opportunity to lead rather than follow is in front of all of us, we just need to transition our range of skills.

(Company)">Tankoa</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/207097/image/large-7c518165baffe4e2442855b521019304.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/207097">A glance at the list above reveals a preponderance of projects in Turkey. When SuperYacht Times recently dropped by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a> studio, we began by asking the company principals whether this has been by choice or chance. &nbsp;Antonio: A bit of both. Certainly most of our clients today are European or Turkish. When we were starting out it was probably easier to find work in Turkey and we’ve maintained those friendships and connections. Turkey is also ideally suited to our core business for yachts between 40 and 70 metres. A key aspect of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a> is that most of our work is full-custom, which is another reason why our Turkish customers come to us. We also have Latin American clients and we are working to develop the North American market through our broker contacts. But the market is opening up: a few years ago we would never have knocked on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>’s door, for example, but even they are now presenting smaller concepts within our size range.You head up a young team of designers – is that a draw for younger owners?Enrico: It certainly doesn’t do any harm. The owners of the first two 43-metre Atlantique hulls in build at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Superyachts</a> are in their early 40s like us, for example, and we have a lot of enquiries from owners looking to acquire their first yacht of 40 or 50 metres. This means they come to the table with very different set of expectations than the older generation of owners, who probably grew up with smaller boats before investing in a superyacht.&nbsp;We’re told that younger owners are more interested in sustainable technology for their yachts. Is that your experience?Antonio: Just recently we had a discussion with an owner’s representative interested in a 75-metre project with advanced hybrid propulsion, eco-efficient glass, energy recycling, and so on. But that was just one customer. Even among younger owners, sustainability is rarely a priority.&nbsp;Enrico: Yachting is at least a decade behind the automotive industry in this respect. I started to think seriously about buying an electric car in 2020 when they were still at a premium: now you see Teslas all over the place. The technology for yachts is still developing and it’s going to take a while for both the products and perceptions to catch up.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/213969/image/large-94be124531b9db0a91dffdfdf0b81467.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/213969">Your most recent exterior designs have a harder, cleaner edge to them. Does&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a>&nbsp;have an in-house style?Enrico: More than a style, I think we have an in-house ethos that is reflected in our designs. The Architecture for Voyagers philosophy looks to renew the balance between structure and form, elegance and versatility. The Columbus Atlantique range, for example, expresses what we are all about: clean, contemporary lines without any fussy adornment. Sailing yachts are rarely over-designed, so we combined Italian GT sports car motifs with a classic scooped-out sailboat stern that highlights the essence of travelling by sea.Antonio: Our focus has changed since Enrico took over as head of design and we’ve seen this in the projects we have in build or in development with four times the number of exterior designs we had ten years ago. The way we present projects to shipyards and brokers has also changed. We used to go with a portfolio of what we had already done, take notes on what they were looking for, and go away and come up with a design. Most of our proposals today have already been developed independently in-house. This was the case for the Atlantique range, but also the Neptune and Superleggera concepts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/202265/image/large-c3e133582ee8776af0ff79bcc50f5f26.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/202265">Is there a yacht project that you would like to design given the opportunity?Enrico: There are a couple of projects we worked on during lockdown when we had more time to spread our wings that I’d like to develop further, also because they are smaller than what we usually do. But I’m also very interested in the evolution of &nbsp;relationship between spaces in yacht design. We’re starting to see yachts of 55 metres or more that are under 500 GT, and you can only do that by having more open or semi-open spaces. This in turn influences the exterior proportions and the relationship between full and empty volumes.&nbsp;Antonio: I think this is one of the most exciting design trends we’re seeing at the moment. The most recent example is 58.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a>, the longest yacht under 500 GT, designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Rover Design (Company)">Cor D Rover</a> and built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>. These low-rise superstructures and long, slender hulls are more challenging to design and engineer, but we’re seeing more and more demand for this kind of yacht. We’ve started experimenting with designs of our own and the 50-metre explorer concept for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tankoa Yachts S.p.A. (Company)">Tankoa</a>, for example, is available in two different versions that prioritise interior volume or hull length.

The Turin-based design firm, best known for its innovative work in the automotive sector, has a dedicated nautical division that has developed superyacht concepts for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> as well as production models for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a>. SuperYacht Times <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/53979" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="At the studio with the perfect proportions of Pininfarina (2021-10-29 15:45:00 +0200)">recently visited Pininfarina's headquarters in Turin, Italy</a>. A visit to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4640" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pininfarina (Company)">Pininfarina</a> headquarters in Turin reveals more about its yacht design projects, from the<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/52585" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco reveals KAIROS: the next generation of yachting (2021-03-23 14:00:00 +0100)">&nbsp;radical Kairos concept for Oceanco</a> to the restyled production range for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a>.“Italian style means a sense of proportion, simplicity and harmony of lines, such that after a considerable time there is still something which is more alive than just a memory of beauty,” said Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina, founder of the eponymous Italian design house. Best known for its work with Ferrari and Alfa Romeo, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4640" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pininfarina (Company)">Pininfarina</a> has arguably created more beautiful cars than any other design firm. Visiting its vast headquarters just outside Turin is a revelation; part research laboratory and part automotive museum, it is the nerve centre for a broad spectrum of design disciplines, from transport and architecture to consumer electronics, home furniture and yacht design.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/210196/image/large-b7b4ffa491ce61fe18c4e090709392f6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/210196">The company’s involvement in the yachting sector dates back to the 1960s but took off with projects such as the Beneteau 45F5, which introduced a new aesthetic to sailboat design in 1990; <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7764" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Destriero67.7m (222'1&quot;)Fincantieri Yachts1991">Destriero</a>, the record-breaking motor yacht launched by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/295" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fincantieri Yachts (Company)">Fincantieri</a> in 1991; the Primatist G46 Aerotop sports cruiser for Bruno Abbate; and the super-fast but minimalist Magnum 80 in 2008.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/45430/image/large-570ccdbf09398bd8531b8ea44bd323e5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45430">“Over the last few years we’ve refocused our activities in the nautical sector and developed a consistent design language to strengthen the brand, build recognition in the market and enhance product positioning,” says Daniele Mazzon, Chief Transportation Designer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4640" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pininfarina (Company)">Pininfarina</a>. “What hasn’t changed is the design DNA based on elegance, purity and innovation that runs through all our projects, whatever the discipline.”This new creative phase began in 2015 with the Ottantacinque concept for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/295" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fincantieri Yachts (Company)">Fincantieri</a>, an 85-metre motor yacht that coincided with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4640" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pininfarina (Company)">Pininfarina</a>’s 85th anniversary and reunited the builder and designer after <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7764" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Destriero67.7m (222'1&quot;)Fincantieri Yachts1991">Destriero</a>. It was followed up with the 70-metre Aurea&nbsp;concept for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a> named after the sectio aurea or Golden Section, the mathematical formula that describes the pleasing proportions found in nature and architecture. The 30-metre WallyCento <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tango30.48m (100'0&quot;)Persico Marine2017">Tango</a>, launched in the same year, sported a sophisticated yet ultra-lightweight interior by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4640" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pininfarina (Company)">Pininfarina</a>, and the fluid exterior lines of Aurea were repeated in the Super Sport 65, another collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a> in 2019. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/8400/image/large-cefa033687f88d126ba9b49581bd51d7.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/8400">But the design language developed by Mazzon and his team attained another level of maturity with two of their most recent projects. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/52585" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco reveals KAIROS: the next generation of yachting (2021-03-23 14:00:00 +0100)">The 90-metre Kairos concept for Oceanco</a> and the 35-foot R35 sports boat for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess</a> may be at opposite ends of the size range, but they represent an ability to respond to very different briefs that only comes with decades of interdisciplinary creative experience.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/193223/image/large-6bc85a3d09df455c3e9500bc15570b12.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/193223"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/190530/image/large-6ffabc55cad2c4fab14efcc336df057e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/190530">“The brief from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> was for a superyacht of 90 metres in length, but under 2,000 gross tons, aimed at younger owners that may prefer to use their yacht in fixed locations rather than for moving around a lot,” says Mazzon. “It’s basically a huge dayboat and this new lifestyle at sea meant we could take a fresh look at both the exterior design and interior layout.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/193148/image/large-ada3d9e0fb03f7d3a9284bf81ab56c8c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/193148"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> has called Kairos “a change in the design paradigm” and its innovative nature is apparent from the asymmetrical deck arrangement and open spaces when viewed from overhead. This is partly a consequence of the volumetric requirements, but it also provides surprising outboard perspectives and inboard lighting angles. More radical is the interior layout that does away with convention completely.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/206883/image/large-f8192abef3fccaa3816efd10fb89b2dd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/206883">“Most large yachts have the master stateroom and VIP suites on the main deck or higher, but we’ve put all the guest accommodation on the lower deck,” explains Mazzon. “In fact, we don’t have just one owner’s suite but several with opening waterside balconies. There’s also a show kitchen on the main deck and everything is arranged around a central ‘piazza’. We basically turned the traditional layout on its head, which was possible because the electric hybrid propulsion system is housed on the under-lower deck.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/210190/image/large-06ddae37152ab418244b029bf84fcb07.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/210190">The collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a> began in 2017 with the elegantly agile R35 runabout. Since then it has expanded to other models, new and existing, lending the British brand a fresh design identity in the process. By teaming up with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4640" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pininfarina (Company)">Pininfarina</a> and Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) Technologies, the foiling, full-carbon R35 represented a bold departure for Princess as it stepped into new market territory. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/210191/image/large-faf9405d10a5acd413ac322f9cb0672d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/210191">“The R35 was developed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess</a> in great secrecy because they wanted to surprise the market, which is why the prototype was heavily disguised with dazzle camouflage,” says Mazzon. “We felt very much at home with the project because at this size the design similarities between performance cars and fast boats are much more apparent.”Aerodynamic as well as hydrodynamic efficiency was essential, so the graceful windshield design was tested in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4640" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pininfarina (Company)">Pininfarina</a>’s own wind tunnel facility and the sculpted vents in the stern act like NACA air intakes on a sports car to draw exhaust fumes away from the cockpit. Following the lead of some high-end performance carmakers, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess</a> also offers owners a familiarisation course prior to delivery. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/210192/image/large-ff79ebc8ea5ccadd33f06b77e685274a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/210192">“Something we’ve imported from the automotive world into our yacht projects is 360-degree vision that considers the object from all angles,” says Mazzon. “So the hardtop on the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess</a> Y95 flybridge model, for example, has been designed to look good not just from the outside, but also when you’re standing under it. That’s not something you always see on production yachts.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/210187/image/large-ec81561521a7292ef404aad8cb210535.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/210187">At the Venice Boat Show in May, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4640" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pininfarina (Company)">Pininfarina</a> announced a new refitting division aimed at clients looking to rejuvenate or customise historic tenders and yachts. Its first project due for completion early next year is 28-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazal28.04m (91'12&quot;)Benetti SpA1977">Mazal</a>, a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> motor yacht launched in 1977, which is being refitted in collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6357" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="VZ Yachts (Company)">VZ Yacht.</a> Apart from a complete interior makeover, the bulwarks have been raised to create a forward cockpit for the private use of the owner, the aft section has been lengthened and the transom angle reversed to lend the vessel a more contemporary look, an exterior staircase and composite hardtop have been added to the sundeck, and the radar mast redesigned<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/197137/image/large-c76d39c85ccba54581c97eae12a69de0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/197137">And as if the Italian design house did not have enough new projects on the go, it has also launched a service devoted to helm station design, a specialisation with evident links to automotive dashboards. At the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show (Company)">Monaco Yacht Show</a>, it introduced a helm station concept with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4590" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="VARD Group AS (Company)">VARD</a> Electro aimed at semi and full custom superyacht projects that draws on its competences in human-centric design. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4640" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pininfarina (Company)">Pininfarina</a> also unveiled a fast race boat project with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4656" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Persico Marine (Company)">Persico Marine</a> and a design collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3831" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fabbri Service srl (Company)">Fabbri Fiore</a> to develop a new series of portholes for yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/210189/image/large-a368f527da053acb804742daa9e2f0b8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/210189">At the 2022 Dusseldorf Boat Show, Elan will display its new top-of-the-range E6 sailing yacht developed in conjunction with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4640" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pininfarina (Company)">Pininfarina</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/879" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Humphreys Yacht Design (Company)">Humphreys Yacht Design</a> and Gurit. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4640" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pininfarina (Company)">Pininfarina</a> has designed both the exterior and interior to create a sailboat that combines functionality with racing appeal and takes Elan’s design language into the future.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/210197/image/large-3c9b5d8b35377c2421139f493234c16e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/210197">At the end of my visit I was treated to a virtual tour of the Teorema, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4640" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pininfarina (Company)">Pininfarina</a>’s fully autonomous, electric hypercar concept developed entirely using Virtual Reality. Donning a VR headset inside a showroom usually used to present real-life prototypes, I was able to walk around the car and peek inside at the futuristic interior (instead of standard doors, the roof can be raised and passengers walk inside). There is little chance the Teorema will ever go into production.
