Competitors at the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta - 15th">Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta 2022</a> were graced with a third day of ideal wind and sea conditions for racing. The north east brought on a breeze that would provide great conditions for the fleet racing around the La Maddalena archipelago. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/229438/image/large-3f63992ed0d777924fa474946ac15b75.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/229438">The starting procedures commenced on schedule at 12:30 with wind speeds from the east-northeast clocking in at around 10 knots. The Race Committee decided on a clockwise course of the islands of La Maddalena and Caprera, via the Bisce strait and leaving the Secca Di Tre Monti to starboard.The course saw an interesting passage to the north between the island of Santa Maria and the Isola Piana before rounding the islet of Barettinelli Di Fuori, acting as a natural mark. The wind shifts and localised increases and drops in pressure, such as the transition zone caused by the cover from the island between the towns of La Maddalena and Palau.The Multihull Division started off proceedings with the Superyacht Division following with a staggered start procedure. The key to today's result was when we gybed in front of La Maddalena towards Palau, finding more pressure to get out of that area. The drop in the breeze towards the end didn't help us because ours is a heavy boat, but the result rewarded our efforts.” added Alberto Barovier.The Multihull Division saw <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12027" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Allegra APC7823.95m (78'7&quot;)Green Marine2014">Allegra</a> once again secure another victory in her continuous sequence of first place finishes. The fleet participating in the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/151" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Wind (Company)">Southern Wind</a> Rendezvous and Trophy went on a long outing today, heading north from Porto Cervo to the Lavezzi mark off the Bocche di Bonifacio strait, before returning past the islands of Budelli and Rizzoli. After a windless Friday for the maxi yachts at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez - 2024">Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez</a>, racing resumed on Saturday with the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez organising the final day of competition. This marked the conclusion of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7139" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="International Maxi Association (IMA) (Company)">International Maxi Association</a>’s 2024 Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge. The final day of racing for the Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez 2024 took place on Saturday, with the winners of each Maxi class announced.

The Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez race got off to a promising start yesterday as the maxi fleet embarked on the opening races of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7139" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="International Maxi Association (IMA) (Company)">International Maxi Association</a>’s 2024 Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge. With sunshine and moderate southwesterly winds, the conditions were near ideal for the 41-strong maxi fleet, all setting sail from the Plage de Pampelonne.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/330604/image/large-39fb2a8106ff79aae78d73f3ff674ced.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/330604">For the larger yachts, the race committee of the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez laid on two windward-leeward races in the Bay of Pampelonne, where the competition was fierce in the Maxi A and B classes, which featured yachts measuring 24-metres and above.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/330601/image/large-a5a8a453ac926fc6922cd81d43e3e612.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/330601">Maxi A class resultsIn the Maxi A class, Peter Harrison’s 22-metre Jolt delivered an impressive performance, securing two wins. In the first race, Jolt crossed the line one minute and 48 seconds ahead of Sir Peter Ogden’s 23.5-metre Jethou, followed by Giovanni Lombardi Stronati’s 25-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4091" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Django Unchained25.25m (82'10&quot;)Goetz Composites2009">Django HF</a> in third place. Despite being called over the start line early in the second race, Jolt still managed to finish first, reducing her margin to 57 seconds under IRC corrected time.Much like Jolt, Jethou also faced challenges. The superyacht industry is becoming increasingly conscious of its environmental impact, particularly regarding carbon emissions and this year’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2024">Monaco Yacht Show</a> will offer visitors the opportunity to interact with many of the companies that are pushing the sector toward a more sustainable future. As awareness heightens, a discernible shift has emerged. More than ever, influential owners and stakeholders are actively pushing for a more sustainable future by prioritising investments in environmentally responsible practices. Developed in collaboration with exhibitor <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1981" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Siemens (Company)">Siemens Energy</a>, this system converts green methanol into hydrogen and then electricity. It is capable of powering the yacht's hotel functions, such as air conditioning and lighting and can recharge the batteries without needing to store hydrogen onboard. The &nbsp;carbon-neutral system can generate up to 100kW of electricity. This allows the vessel to operate its propulsion engines and diesel generator inactively, thus significantly extending the duration it can spend at anchor without relying on diesel fuel.The second major development has come from another <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2024">Monaco Yacht Show</a> exhibitor, the Dutch shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>, which launched the 118.8-metre Feadship 821 earlier this year. Project 821 distinguishes itself as the first ever superyacht powered entirely by hydrogen, aligning with Feadship's commitment to developing "net zero" yachts by 2030. To achieve this, the company has heavily invested in adapting the required technology to the spatial constraints of a superyacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310514/image/large-7928e6e601c8c856e4d7a763693038b3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310514">According to the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI), approximately 70-78% of a yacht’s annual energy consumption is attributed to its hotel load, with heating and air conditioning as the primary energy consumers. While <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8907" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship van Lent 821118.8m (389'9&quot;)Feadship2025">Project 821</a> may not carry enough liquid hydrogen for transoceanic journeys, it can generate sufficient electricity for all hotel load needs.&nbsp;When required, the fuel cells in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8907" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship van Lent 821118.8m (389'9&quot;)Feadship2025">Project 821</a> can also utilise methanol, a liquid fuel which can be stored under ambient conditions. This alternative biofuel can be converted into hydrogen through steam reforming before entering the electrochemical reaction in the fuel cell. Although she will not be at the yacht show herself, the team at Feadship will be exhibiting some of the superyacht’s many features throughout the show and are looking forward to sharing their insights with visitors.&nbsp;Both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11733" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Almax49.99m (164'0&quot;)Sanlorenzo2024">Almax</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8907" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship van Lent 821118.8m (389'9&quot;)Feadship2025">Project 821</a> mark a major step forward in the use of both hydrogen and methanol and the entire industry is looking for ways to utilise these future fuels. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/315068/image/large-032c1cf246734545d5887abf1723f352.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/315068">Solar PowerWhile future fuels and alternative energy are a major topic of discussion, there are a number of companies that have been building yachts with sustainable energy sources. A key example of this is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> with their advanced solar power technology, used throughout their lines but most particularly in their ECO series. This year, the Polish builder is exhibiting one of their newest hulls from the Eco series, the 24.5-metre 80 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> Power Eco.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a>’s Solar catamarans harvest power from the solar panels, fitted onto the tops and sides of the yacht, for a more eco-conscious and efficient cruising experience. In-house designed and manufactured by the shipyard, the solar panels are state-of-the-art. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> was also one of the first companies to integrate solar panels in the curved carbon bimini roofs of its Eco yachts.&nbsp;While solar panels are a major part of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a>’s sustainable development, the yard has also developed a series of electric catamaran’s and is currently construction the first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> Zero Cat. This emission-free sailing yacht will be equipped with a reformer which will convert methanol into clean hydrogen, the yacht is also set to generate no nitrogen or sulphur oxides. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/283894/image/large-67a3c37d48ea5d877390c4d85bc789ed.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/283894">Collaboration for a Greener FutureEach year visitors to the Yacht Design &amp; Innovation Hub have the opportunity to listen to top experts discuss a range of topics about the future of sustainable yacht design. In 2022 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5877" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Water Revolution Foundation (Company)">Water Revolution Foundation</a> was joined on stage by key companies from yacht construction and design, to discuss the invaluable importance of collaboration across the industry. The goal of this discussion was to demonstrate how important it is for top companies to share their findings with smaller ones, to enable the entire industry to innovate faster and reach the 20% reduction in emissions by 2030. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/322484/image/large-f00ff66d091b7f2dba7cf4d7702e50a5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/322484">Since that pivotal event, a number of projects have come to light with this open-source mentality, and a very important one is the 69-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/34" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vitters Shipyard (Company)">Vitters</a> sailing yacht, Project Zero by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/230" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dykstra Naval Architects (Company)">Dykstra Naval Architects</a>. This superyacht, which is due for delivery next year, aims to be powered entirely without fossil fuels, a goal that necessitated a comprehensive reevaluation of the design approach using human-centred design techniques.The yacht's domestic power is designed to be supplied by energy generated through sailing and solar input, with the efficiency of the hull and the design of hydro-generating thrusters playing crucial roles.&nbsp;The project team tackled the energy challenge by dividing it into four key areas: harvesting, storing, saving, and managing energy. This approach was supported by extensive data collection from various yachts to capture real-world operational profiles, providing insights into energy usage patterns, such as the frequency of showers by guests. This data analysis led to the implementation of new solutions, such as installing sensors in lighting systems to reduce energy waste. Another significant innovation is the use of three centimetres of cork insulation beneath a Tesumo deck made of sustainable wood, which replaces conventional fillers and enhances thermal efficiency.&nbsp;All research from Project Zero is being published on FoundationZero.org, an open-source technology platform, which aims to share findings with the superyacht industry, broader maritime sectors, and beyond. The project's contributions to hydrogenation, routing, and sail-related technologies will be shared openly with the aim of accelerating innovation across the industry. The construction of the yacht, which has been developed in collaboration with yacht designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4364" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Horacio Bozzo Design (Company)">Horacio Bozzo Design</a>, will begin this year and she is due for delivery in 2027.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331546/image/large-df9b1d8ab13f4e8019ade2f99f404ba9.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331546">Developed and funded in-house by the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5463" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Barnes Yachting (Company)">Barnes Yachting</a>, Project Tide is the first hull of an ambitious project by the company to build yachts for the clients of both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5463" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Barnes Yachting (Company)">Barnes Yachting</a> and the extensive residential portfolio of Barnes International. Today most yacht builders are builders and assemblers, constructing hulls and superstructures but assembling interiors made by specialists elsewhere, and shipyard’s like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7235" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Orion Yachts (Company)">Orion Yachts</a> are accomplished in this type of manufacturing. We have also been able to establish a production line with the shipyard, meaning that our clients won't have to wait four-five years for their vessel, as you would at an Italian or Northern European shipyard today. Both of the yachts are 52-metres, under 500 GT, which I think is the current sweet spot for the market and we aim to begin metal cutting at the end of this year, with the first yacht exhibited at the Monaco Yacht Show 2027. The second hull we will aim to launch ahead of the 2028 summer season."Project Tide will be built to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/554" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyds Ships (Company)">Lloyd's Register</a> and LY3 compliance, with a top speed of 15 knots and half load displacement.

A couple of years ago I found myself in a position where I was perhaps lucky enough to join any other management company. However, I believed I could do better, as I saw an opportunity to innovate and enhance existing yacht management services. So I decided to start over by gathering together a team of highly skilled ex-colleagues from various sectors of the industry and create a new yacht management company to provide high-value services to serious clients worldwide. With over a decade of experience in the super yachting sector, I embraced this new challenge, which was far more challenging than anything I had previously undertaken and something I had never envisioned doing.As for the decision to be headquartered in Dubai, it was a result of several factors. Firstly, there was clearly a gap in the market for quality yacht management services in the region, which is supported by the rapidly developing maritime infrastructure and the increasing number of ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs) coming to the UAE. The existing saturation of yacht management and brokerage firms in Western Europe also played a crucial role in my decision. While there are some satellite offices here, there is a notable absence of independent and bespoke management companies specifically dedicated to serving this region.&nbsp;Additionally, my familiarity with the UAE further influenced my decision to base <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7335" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix Yacht Management (Company)">Phoenix</a> in Dubai. My previous commercial career and experience with several large superyachts, allowing me to establish strong roots and a deep understanding of the region. This local knowledge and experience positioned us to better serve our clients and capitalise on the unique opportunities available in the UAE.How has&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7335" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix Yacht Management (Company)">Phoenix</a>&nbsp;evolved since its inception?Since its inception, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7335" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix Yacht Management (Company)">Phoenix</a> has experienced substantial growth in its service offerings. Initially focused on yacht management, the company has rapidly expanded into charter and sales. We are currently enlarging our Sales and Charter teams and are actively developing our New Build services. We are overseeing a major project and are in negotiations for a larger vessel, with additional plans to construct a large explorer catamaran.Additionally, there was a significant change in the organisational structure last year when I formed a partnership with Yousuf Al Hashimi during a yacht charter in the Caribbean. Following several discussions, Al Hashimi, intrigued by the superyacht sector and passionate about maritime activities, including participation in sailing regattas such as Cowes Week, decided to join <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7335" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix Yacht Management (Company)">Phoenix Yachts</a> as a Partner and Managing Director. Coincidentally, Al Hashimi's first major engagement in the superyacht industry with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7335" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix Yacht Management (Company)">Phoenix</a> occurred at last year's <a href="http://superyachttimes.com" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht Times</a> event in Abu Dhabi.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331435/image/large-dc49849ed4ab1ef0fac2903b7eecfe11.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331435">Do you believe the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf region will soon rival the Caribbean as the premier winter cruising destination?In terms of charter volume and thinking in a slightly larger arena, I do not envision the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf region directly competing with the Caribbean, where places like St. Barts are traditional and busy hotspots for luxury charter holidays, offering more entertainment and infrastructure.Instead, the Red Sea, known for its natural beauty and adventure charters, particularly for scuba diving, offers a different kind of experience. The journey further extends to the Arabian Gulf, presenting a unique winter destination. The Gulf region's combination of an ideal climate, modern infrastructure, luxury lifestyle, cultural richness, and high-quality services makes it an exceptional superyacht destination.The Greater gulf region provides a unique type of adventure for those looking to try and explore new waters. This unique and distinctly different experience makes it difficult to compare the two regions directly.However, in terms of the amount of yachts in the region, I believe we will soon be able to compete with the Caribbean. As a result of continued government investments in marine infrastructure, such as those in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7371" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="NEOM (Company)">NEOM</a> in Saudi Arabia and that ongoing in the UAE, it is expected that more yacht owners will choose to station their vessels in the region, thereby increasing demand for quality yacht management services in the region.Moreover, there is an increasing need for high-end maintenance facilities in the Middle East to support the anticipated rise in superyachts. While such facilities are currently limited, regional authorities are actively working to address this gap. Recent updates to yacht charter regulations in the UAE demonstrate a commitment to advancing the yachting industry. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7335" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix Yacht Management (Company)">Phoenix</a>, alongside other key local stakeholders, has been a leading advocate for these developments.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331235/image/large-19425dc3700cb1849fe75cd8bbf4e154.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331235">How many of your clients are Middle Easterners versus Europeans, and how do the preferences of your Middle Eastern clients differ from those of Western clients?As for the demographic of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7335" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix Yacht Management (Company)">Phoenix Yacht Management</a>'s clientele, our client base is currently evenly split between Middle Easterners and Europeans. However, we are increasingly focusing on the domestic UAE market.&nbsp;This dynamic is evolving as the Middle East is a booming region. Over the last 10 years, the region has completely transformed. You can see ultra luxury developments in the marinas, hotels, restaurants plus then the rich array of museums and large international events. This change is not limited to Dubai; there has been significant infrastructure development in the rest of UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. This of course affected the regional yacht market.&nbsp;Previously, the largest superyachts (over 90-metres) were predominantly owned by Middle Eastern clients, while those ranging from 40 to 80-metres were more commonly chartered. Now, with regional developments and changes in marine law, more Middle Eastern clients are purchasing yachts in this size range. Moreover, two additional guest staterooms are situated on the lower deck starboard side.&nbsp;“We split the lower deck into two areas,” Bart Bouwhuis, co-creative director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a>, explains. “Both sections have separate access and stairways allowing service to continue unimpeded across all decks, and guests to enjoy their time together in privacy. The Mumbai Port Authority (MPA) now intends to self-fund its planned marina, according to local media sources. In the local press, Rajiv Jalota, chairman of Mumbai Port Authority, stated: "We are not developing it on land; we are developing it in the sea. Studies are at a very advanced stage and clearances should come through." The planned marina is set to cater to a significant influx of luxury yachts. Currently, despite India's extensive coastline exceeding 7,500 kilometres, there are very few facilities for mooring luxury yachts. With around 200 leisure boats typically moored near the Gateway of India due to the lack of dedicated marina facilities, the new marina aims to provide a world-class berthing option, equipped with comprehensive marina services.
