The Asia-Pacific region has long been viewed as one of the most promising markets for the yachting industry. Yet despite rising wealth and expanding maritime infrastructure, its development has progressed more gradually than many early forecasts suggested.During the Clear Water Bay Gateway Yachting Festival in Hainan, China, an event aimed at highlighting the island’s ambitions to position itself as a yachting destination, SuperYacht Times met with Enrico Chiaussa, Chief Commercial Officer for Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a>.Chiaussa has spent over 18 years with the Italian shipyard. He joined the company in 2008 as assistant to the sales manager for Europe and has since progressed through the organisation to oversee <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a>’s commercial activities across the three regions.Drawing on nearly two decades with the shipyard, he outlined how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> views demand across its core markets and discussed the evolving dynamics shaping the territories under his remit, with particular focus on Asia-Pacific.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/391793/image/large-79662538bec7ed1b4525c3b9886076a4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/391793">Azimut’s global market balanceChiaussa described <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a>’s relatively even sales distribution across the Americas, Europe and a combined Middle East and Asia-Pacific market as a longstanding feature of the Group’s strategy, with each region accounting for “roughly one third of the market”.While Europe has accounted for a somewhat larger share of sales in recent years, with “around 35 to 40 percent of our market” now coming from the region, Chiaussa said the “regional distribution has never been very unbalanced”, noting that some Italian shipyards generate more than 50 percent of their sales in Europe.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/381144/image/large-9cf6e6b1917e4541770863aac9e0bee6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/381144">Demand patterns also vary across <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a>’s product range by region. In Europe, the company has historically sold a higher proportion of mid-sized models. “In the past Europe was the market where we were selling mainly medium-sized boats, around the 60 to 70 foot range. That was the core business for Europe,” he said. More recently, however, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> has sought to broaden demand for larger yachts in the region, a shift reflected in early interest in the Grande 44M, three units of which were sold in Europe before the model’s launch.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a>’s larger models, particularly those in the Grande collection, have also gained strong traction in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific markets. “The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> Grande collection has been performing well in Asia, and the same applies in the Middle East,” Chiaussa said.He cited the performance of the Grande Trideck as an example of this trend. “When we launched the Trideck, eight of the first ten units were sold to clients in the Middle East and Asia,” he said.Chiaussa added that the pattern has continued as production has progressed. “We have a considerable number of yachts for Middle Eastern and Asian clients,” he said. The yachts are destined for several markets across the region, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and New Zealand, as well as the Gulf.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/391794/image/large-943fc85b9cc6fafdc8d04423da476f9e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/391794">From dealer-led sales to direct client engagement<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> has increasingly placed greater emphasis on building closer relationships with clients throughout the sales process. “Buyers want to engage with the shipyard, meet the owner and visit the yard,” Chiaussa said, highlighting how direct interaction has become a more prominent part of the purchasing journey.This shift reflects a broader adjustment in how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> approaches the market. “We decided to evolve our sales approach five years ago as we realised we were missing a segment of clients looking to enjoy the whole experience rather than the finished product itself,” he explained.In response, the company has strengthened its direct involvement while continuing to work alongside dealers and brokers. Rather than replacing intermediaries, the shipyard remains closely engaged throughout the process, from initial contact to negotiation and delivery, supporting client relationships alongside its partners. While <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> has intensified its efforts across the region, particularly in China, he notes that purchasing activity on the mainland has remained relatively subdued in recent years.“China is a bit quiet in terms of buying appetite,” he said, attributing the slowdown to regulatory factors and broader economic conditions. However, he emphasised that Chinese buyers continue to play an important role beyond the mainland itself. “There are many Chinese people living outside China who are real buyers,” he said, noting that the country still acts as an important centre of influence where brand awareness and purchasing decisions are often shaped.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/391796/image/large-b3987cd52dd48a6abd4255afe79346c8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/391796">As a result, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> has continued to dedicate resources to the region through marketing, travel and local engagement. “We are investing time, advertising and people here because this is where you build the brand,” he said.Within Asia-Pacific, Chiaussa identified Hong Kong and Japan as two of the company’s most significant markets. This legal framework aimed to enable them to restructure, while continuing to operate under the supervision of an independent expert.Following this, on 20 April, the Court of Florence granted protective measures for a maximum period of four months, restricting creditors from initiating or continuing enforcement actions against the company’s assets, including vessels currently under construction.The court also confirmed that these protective measures extended to shipowners, which prevented them from terminating their contracts of yachts currently under construction during the proceedings.The Court of Florence has now issued an order upholding the appeals filed by five shipowners which prevented them terminating their contracts. Over time, Luke exchanged sailing for wakeboarding and eventually game-fishing, depending his passion for being out at sea. This passion has remained a constant factor in Luke’s life, deepening even further once he could share it with his own kids.A few years ago, Luke sold his business and decided to step into boating in a more deliberate way by acquiring the 35-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a>, built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/554" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyds Ships (Company)">Lloyd Ships</a> in Australia in 1986. Purchasing her in 2024, the yacht allowed for Luke and his family to explore the Australian coast with more comfort, as well as for them to get to share their passion for the sea. “My two boys are especially big on game fishing, and my daughter is very passionate about snorkelling and marine life”, says Luke. By acquiring <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a>, it allows for the family to share their passions with one another.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396937/image/large-131bb2f788c31defa0822382f533d318.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396937">A three-part refitAs <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a> is from the 80s, she was in need of an upgrade when Luke purchased her. The refit has been phased and purposeful, with 2024 seeing the first of the three phases. The yacht spent September to November at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3255" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard (Company)">Gold Coast City Marina &amp; Shipyard</a> where the bridge was upgraded, soft furnishings replaced and extensive paintwork completed. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388209/image/large-c74eb7958e3e321e611bea0e2d9fee9c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388209">The second phase was centred around remodelling the saloon, with new flooring, carpeting and ceilings, as well as mechanical enhancements. Other upgrades included a beach club installation, complete with an inflatable pool, protective netting and a shaded cabana, which has proved particularly popular with charter guests. Possibly the most meaningful addition during this refit have been the zero-speed stabilisers, “my wife suffers from really severe seasickness, the stabilisers are essential in making the yacht comfortable for my family,” Luke shares.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388210/image/large-06ec6524534531dc1f3ac942dd743803.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388210"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a>’s third and final refit will take place in 2027 and will see an upgrade of the crew quarters. Originally, Luke had hoped to finalise the refit this year, but the yacht’s agenda, both in charter and personal use, is almost fully booked for the calendar year, and Luke wants to ensure there is enough time for the refit: “Our crew is so amazing, I'm super lucky to have what I believe is the best crew.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388187/image/large-fde4622fb25e3e416358ace496ed0104.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388187"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a>&nbsp;juniorYet the 35-metre motor yacht is only half the story. Six months after acquiring the mothership, Luke secured what he describes as Australia’s leading game fishing platform: a custom-built 17.7-metre (58’0”) Assegai sportfisher. Designed specifically for marlin fishing along the country’s east coast, the yacht is equipped with a gyro stabiliser and, more recently, a Furuno Omni Sonar System capable of scanning 360 degrees around the vessel to significant depths, providing a technological edge in a pursuit that still relies on instinct and patience.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396954/image/large-96857bf8151cfcd655d86dc3d061d704.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396954">The reason for acquiring the fishing vessel to cruise alongside the mothership are his sons. Luke shares that “my sons and I have been game fishing together for the last five years or so,” and have even partaken in various competitions in- and around Sydney. “We’ve won a couple of state titles and other competitions,” a hint of pride sits in Luke’s voice. “My children in particular, have a passion for fishing, and I've just shared that passion, and supported it”, he adds.Lukes really enjoys fishing with his family and friends, on a recent trip to the Great Barrier Reef, the Shore Thing 58' landed a 1,223 pound Black Marlin. Yet Luke is quick to note that they’re conscious about the way they fish. “We only catch what we eat; everything else goes right back in the ocean. We’re not hunters, we just fish for the joy of it.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388186/image/large-a98a34adf0095495d9e5f32f36eb458e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388186">The joy of cruisingSome of Luke’s most cherished moments onboard are those with friends and family. “We hosted my 50th birthday onboard,” Luke shares, having chartered the yacht to Whitehaven Beach, located in the Whitsundays, “there were about 40 guests, all friends and family.”&nbsp;Possibly Luke’s favourite memory is the recent Christmas holiday onboard. “Spending time with our family and another family, sitting around and just having deep belly laughs over some beautifully cooked meals by our chef onboard.” Luke describes this as delightful and quite possibly one of the most memorable times onboard. “Your kids grow up so quick, getting to share such a beautiful time together and feeling like, as your kids become young adults, that you can really share laughs and stories. Yet the engineering philosophy behind its custom-designed solutions is based on a resolutely modular approach.When Mervyn van der Ploeg was appointed managing director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom Yacht Equipment</a> in 2015, the company was going through a bad patch. It routinely redesigned everything from scratch for each new yacht project, leading to prototype-level inefficiencies and financial strain. A small but telling example is that it used to produce 32 different types of locking pins. Today, through a process of standardisation and modularisation, that number has been reduced to just two sizes.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396743/image/large-c20dda6c39f046eea94eaa71057b9e2c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396743">“Previously, when designing a platform for a yacht, four different locking pins might have been specified, requiring multiple suppliers,” explains van der Ploeg. “Now, we buy 200 locking pins per year in two sizes from a single supplier at half the cost.”The process began by redesigning a prototype passerelle from scratch using a fully modular approach, which then became a template for other equipment. While remaining a supplier of custom equipment, modular components are now reused across <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s product range, reducing design complexity and streamlining production.“A key technical insight came from looking outside the yachting industry,” continues van der Ploeg. “For example, swivel joints originally designed for excavators have been incorporated into our gangways. These components are proven, industrial-grade and standardised, which means we can build highly reliable systems without reinventing core mechanisms.”In the ten years since van der Ploeg joined the company, turnover has more than doubled from €12 million to €25 million, driven by increased efficiency along with larger yachts and a rising demand for integrated equipment.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396739/image/large-d48d0f06ceeb5a00cfda9bafe1c96878.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396739">Make it modularThe spin-off from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s modular way of thinking are innovations designed to maximise open space while eliminating visual clutter. Many of these solutions revolve around relocating drive systems into hinge lines and the platform structures themselves. In one recent project, a large side platform was initially conceived as two separate elements with a manually installed infill piece. While technically feasible, it was operationally awkward. Instead, by introducing an internal hinge drive already proven elsewhere, the entire system was re-engineered as a single monolithic platform. The infill was eliminated, deployment became faster, crew workload was reduced, and the geometry became cleaner.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396744/image/large-4feaec6057dc57f70fe27a2f2a88296b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396744">The Sliding Stairs Access Hatch is another example. Developed in response to a request to optimise the passage from the main deck to the beach platform on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship’s</a> 79.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11677" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Valor79.5m (260'10&quot;)Feadship2025">Valor</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s engineers merged door, hatch and boarding equipment components to create a completely new solution. Essentially, the staircases on each side of the pool form the hatch itself, with half of each staircase retracting into the deckhead like a gangway to provide access to the beach club.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396742/image/large-bd76338bca2c0e5436acede35e416f93.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396742">“This marked a next step in modular engineering for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>,” says van der Ploeg. “Our approach not only accelerated the development process, but also showed how modularity enables flexible, cross-disciplinary solutions without compromising quality.”As both staircases form part of the watertight boundary of the vessel certified by Class, one of the main challenges was ensuring watertight integrity, given the angle at which the stair hatches are installed, as well as aligning the treads between the hatches and the fixed structures. In fact, sealing has become a central issue as stern structures grow more complex – folding, rotating and closing at compound angles. While inflatable seals are often the go-to solution and offer excellent theoretical performance, they also represent a single point of failure. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> typically prefers D-profile rubber seals, which wear gradually, remain locally manageable, and allow temporary mitigation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396741/image/large-cf52ffb86158af5f4ac7a5922058d9b5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396741">“This approach is especially critical for Lloyd’s-certified watertight items such as split transom doors closing at different angles, where corners and junctions between curved surfaces become critical failure points,” van der Ploeg points out.Such solutions highlight how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> has evolved beyond developing hardware to innovating the onboard experience, a strategy that has resulted in multiple patented solutions, from pop-up gangways embedded in the stern platform to protective cabrio covers engineered to fold, stack or nest completely out of sight when not in use. At the last edition of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Metstrade (Company)">Metstrade</a>, the company presented five interactive aft deck models through immersive 3D visualisations showcasing how engineering, design and user experience increasingly converge in the early phases of yacht development.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396745/image/large-b406b1bef2a73b0811b05344a273be7e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396745">Under controlAnother defining feature of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s approach is that its control systems and programming are all developed in-house. Precise timing between electronic commands, hydraulic oil flow and mechanical motion is critical, as are programmed delays that account for inertia and mass. Most systems employ frequency-driven power packs rather than simple on/off hydraulics, resulting in smoother movement, lower noise levels and the elimination of hydraulic ‘hammer’ effects. Automated operating cycles manage sequencing, speed and end-of-stroke deceleration automatically, reducing the risk of impact damage and operator error. Before delivery, full functional testing is carried out in-house, often with owner representatives present.Enclosed helicopter lifts represent some of the most complex control systems <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> has delivered. Ironically, real-world usage of helicopter lifts has revealed an interesting pattern:&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396746/image/large-793a08021cda2fc7bab19c3cd8f1a821.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396746">“On some yachts, the heli hangars are no longer actively used and instead function as static storage platforms,” reveals van der Ploeg. “In such cases, owners may even suspend servicing altogether – an illustration of how operational reality can diverge from original design intent.”Developments in control systems are being matched by advances in data intelligence. During the COVID period, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> expanded its remote-support capabilities and identified a recurring issue: when faults occur, crews often cannot describe what happened beyond “pressing the button”. To address this, its latest systems incorporate data logging that records each operating cycle, sequence order, timing, load condition and fault event with precise timestamps.“When an issue arises, engineers can trace it back to the exact operating condition that caused it,” explains van der Ploeg. “While still being rolled out primarily on new-build projects, data logging represents a shift towards evidence-based rather than purely scheduled maintenance.”Across <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s predominantly hydraulic product range, failures rarely originate in the actuators themselves. Instead, the most vulnerable areas are where forces converge – locations where multiple loads are transferred into a single structural interface. Passerelles are a prime example:“Forces are transmitted through long, slender structures back to a limited number of mounting points,” explains van der Ploeg. “When additional functionality is introduced, such as lateral slewing rather than straight-line deployment, those forces increase substantially.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396750/image/large-74a75f9786460908e4bf98d749448420.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396750">Bonding and bolt-inSome <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> passerelles now extend up to 16-metres in length, pushing the limits of lightweight structural engineering while maintaining stiffness, safety margins and regulatory compliance. Designing these interfaces requires careful attention to geometry, material thickness and fatigue behaviour.Marine-grade aluminium remains the primary structural material, selected for its high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance. Steel is used selectively in high-load interfaces where stiffness and wear resistance are critical. Carbon fibre has also been deployed strategically, particularly in the outermost sections of passerelles. Reducing mass at the extremity lowers bending moments throughout the structure, enabling greater reach without adding reinforcements.&nbsp;A more recent addition to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s fabrication methodology is the introduction of structural adhesive bonding. In lightweight aluminium constructions, particularly passerelles, welding thin sections sometimes caused unacceptable deformation due to heat input. To address this, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> now uses a hybrid method: components are positioned with bolts to prevent movement, while the structural adhesive provides the primary load-bearing bond. In this configuration, the bolts act purely as locators and the adhesive carries the load.Another key evolution is the move towards bolt-in housings for boarding equipment such as passerelles and swim ladders. Historically, these housings were built directly into the hull, placing installation and testing squarely on the shipyard’s critical path. This new approach uses self-contained housings that are assembled and factory-tested in-house, accepted by owners or representatives, and installed later as plug-and-play units.“Once delivered, the housing is bolted into place, hydraulics and electrics are connected, and functionality is assured – eliminating the risk of delays, rework and repainting,” says van der Ploeg.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396752/image/large-1ea3884318d73cd6441f8d9cf8801f9c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396752">Breaking outSolely owned by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4951" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw (Company)">Koninklijke De Vries,</a> until recently <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> worked exclusively within <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>. It is now pursuing a more open strategy, with roughly 60% of turnover derived from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> new-build projects, 25% from service and refit work on existing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadships</a>, and the rest from other shipyards – a share that continues to grow as the company expands its marketing network.An early major non-<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> contract was with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4644" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AKYACHT (Company)">AKYACHT</a> in Turkey for its 120-metre-plus project (NB012) due for delivery in 2030. Another is the new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA</a> Custom 80 currently under construction at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA Yachts</a> in Ancona. The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA</a> client, an experienced <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> charterer, specified <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> to supply the boarding systems with which he directly interacts – in total, five independent mechanical systems with fully integrated control logic.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396754/image/large-0eae94a6e941a08764d18f82632bee1f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396754">Across all these developments, a clear evolution emerges. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> has progressed from boatbuilder to specialist supplier, system integrator and, ultimately, lifestyle collaborator. Each project begins by asking what experience the owner, designer or shipyard wants to achieve. British investment migration consultancy Henley &amp; Partners estimates that Japan has approximately 748 centi-millionaires, defined as individuals with net assets of at least US$100 million.Yet despite these conditions, domestic yacht brokerage activity remains limited.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/298475/image/large-2bc1925828d3618f6130a044598154c3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/298475">Bubble-era expansion and its legacyJapan’s so-called bubble era refers to the late 1980s, when loose credit conditions and speculative investment fuelled a rapid surge in asset prices and consumer confidence. Real estate and equity valuations rose sharply before the boom collapsed in the early 1990s, triggering a prolonged period of economic adjustment.Japan experienced a period of substantive domestic yacht ownership during this time. Yukio Shintani, founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1132" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Creation Marine (Company)">Creation Marine</a>, recalls that “during the bubble period, domestically produced and imported boats of 25 to 50 feet saw explosive sales”, adding that many marinas were developed to support this growth. He also notes that corporate ownership expanded into larger vessels, with companies acquiring yachts in the 70 to 100-foot range, a scale of ownership that “had not been seen before”, often for “company entertainment and employee benefits” rather than private leisure use.When the bubble burst, the market shifted abruptly. Shintani recounts that a lot of boats for sale appeared on the market, with a significant number subsequently exported to destinations including Russia, South Korea and New Zealand. Domestic demand weakened in parallel, although resale activity persisted as brokers adjusted to the new conditions. “Many used boats came on the market at lower prices,” Shintani explained, allowing transactions to continue at more accessible price points even as new purchases slowed.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/306440/image/large-7dc86989e23fe9887e3eae0a94c0c8d4.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/306440">The experience of that period continues to influence attitudes within Japan’s domestic brokerage market. Nigel Beatty, founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1317" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachtzoo (Company)">Yachtzoo Japan</a>, observes that buyers now in their sixties and seventies retain a direct memory of the period and its aftermath. “That experience still influences how they think about risk and conspicuous ownership today”. Rather than being shaped by aspiration alone, buying behaviour among this cohort remains informed by caution rooted in first-hand experience of the bubble-era collapse.How Japan’s brokerage model differsJapan’s yacht brokerage market has developed along a structurally distinct path from the broker-led systems common in Europe and the United States. This divergence reflects not an absence of brokerage activity, but a different commercial architecture shaped by long-standing business norms and relationship-driven practices.According to Shintani, yacht transactions in Japan are typically handled by sales companies rather than independent brokers acting on behalf of both buyer and seller. “In Japan, the sales company negotiates directly with the buyer,” he said. While some vessels are sold on consignment, Shintani notes that “the buyer does not know how much the seller will sell them for to the dealer”, illustrating a pricing structure that contrasts with the commission-based arrangements more typical in Western markets.A common feature of the Japanese model is that dealers purchase vessels outright, service them, and later resell them, assuming inventory risk while bundling maintenance, support and after-sales services into the transaction. Emphasis is placed on continuity and operational oversight rather than transaction volume, reflecting a market shaped by caution following the bubble-era collapse instead of short-term resale dynamics.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/386827/image/large-7d1fe94087b6643f09cd2327b719f158.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/386827">Beatty stresses that Western-style brokerage structures can operate in Japan, particularly as regulatory reform for larger yachts progresses. The prevailing preference, however, remains the dealership model because it aligns more closely with domestic business culture. “It works in Japan where long-standing relationships are built over generations,” he said.Foreign firms that attempt to replicate Western brokerage practices without adaptation have historically struggled to gain traction. “Many firms try to do business in Japan in a Western way, and this usually doesn’t work,” Beatty noted. In his view, localisation is not optional but fundamental. Companies that fail to adapt to Japanese commercial norms are unlikely to establish durable market positions.To place this in perspective, Beatty points out that Japan has one of the largest fleets of recreational vessels in South and East Asia, alongside a well-developed domestic used yacht market supported by its own listing systems. The distinction, he argues, lies less in the presence of buying and selling activity than in how that activity is structured and conducted. Rather than converging towards Western brokerage models, Japan’s market has evolved in a manner consistent with its wider business environment.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/386825/image/large-217c26f8ba05559616786d2d3cd665fe.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/386825">Constraints shaping today’s brokerage environmentJapan’s yacht brokerage market continues to be shaped by a combination of infrastructural, and cultural constraints that limit both scale and participation.&nbsp;Infrastructure remains one of the most immediate practical constraints. Shintani observes that “marinas in urban areas are full, leaving new buyers with no mooring space”, particularly for yachts over 50 feet. Robin Shellcock, formerly a yacht captain and now a broker at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1317" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachtzoo (Company)">Yachtzoo Japan</a>, points to Yokohama Bay Marina as an example, describing a waiting list of around 20 applicants where nobody’s given up a spot. He adds that one owner even chartered a 70-foot yacht “just to shove it in his berth” in order to retain the space while his own vessel was away for refit.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/386823/image/large-502d9119d1f326f69b22421adc6e56ae.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/386823">Beyond berth availability, marina capability also influences ownership decisions. Drawing on his experience captaining larger yachts, Shellcock notes that adequate shore power remains scarce. When captaining the 35.2-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9290" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Skye35.2m (115'6&quot;)Sunseeker2022">Skye</a>, which required 400-volt, three-phase shore power, that specification was available at only two marinas in Japan. Such limitations influence acquisition decisions, as owners may struggle to base larger yachts domestically with confidence.As vessel size increases, regulatory and crewing requirements become more restrictive. Shintani notes that for Japanese-flagged superyachts, crew availability presents a significant barrier, as “there are no crew members with Japanese seaman’s licences who can handle or service them”, while “foreign licences held by foreigners are not valid”. Beatty highlights the 24-metre threshold as a further constraint. Once a yacht exceeds that length under the Japanese flag, he explains, “you have to be fully commercial to the Japanese standards”, introducing additional cost and administrative requirements even where the yacht is intended for private use.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/386824/image/large-b275375a529b41f215399e6dbc45c606.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/386824">Ownership patterns reflect these combined pressures. Beatty notes that while some Japanese owners do operate larger yachts, these vessels are often based overseas and therefore sit outside the domestic brokerage ecosystem. Within Japan itself, ownership has “traditionally been under 24-metres”, reflecting the influence of infrastructure limits and operating considerations.Financial factors further constrain activity. Shintani points to the weak yen as a continuing challenge, explaining that it “makes it difficult to import boats, both new and used, from overseas”. Rising shipping costs have compounded this effect, inflating acquisition expenses and disproportionately affecting larger yachts, where margins, logistics and operational complexity are already higher.Cultural considerations also continue to shape demand. Kirk Patterson of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8701" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Konpira Yacht Services (Company)">Konipra Yacht Services</a> argues that the limited number of Japanese yacht owners reflects deeper social dynamics rather than a lack of wealth. While ownership is “not zero”, he notes that there are “very few Japanese yacht owners, especially superyachts”, pointing to the limited development of a broad leisure-boating culture. Discretion plays a role, he suggests, with discretionary wealth often directed towards alternatives such as second homes, and extended cruising lifestyles less compatible with prevailing professional and social norms. As a result, where interest exists, ownership is frequently discreet or outward-facing rather than anchored within Japan’s domestic brokerage market.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/386826/image/large-db729ab1f95e3d92ac67cb6a552f6813.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/386826">Prospects for changeAfter decades shaped by contraction and caution, any discussion of change within Japan’s yacht brokerage market must be framed carefully. Recent regulatory adjustments and infrastructure investment have improved access for visiting yachts, but whether these developments can meaningfully influence domestic ownership remains uncertain. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/104219/image/large-c94403a78cad4fa52830c3e4d2898030.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/104219">Prospects for growth are therefore less about sudden expansion than about gradual shifts in demographics, demand profiles and participation, with any change likely to be uneven and incremental rather than transformative.Shintani points first to the ageing profile of Japan’s existing owner base. “The average age of today’s largest group of boat owners is over 70 years old,” he said, adding that over the next “three to five years” many are likely to exit the market. Whether this translates into renewed demand will depend on the extent to which a younger generation can be engaged. In Shintani’s view, this requires more than transactional reform. “I believe we need to convey more about the wonders of marine life to the younger generation,” he said, pointing to the need for “places where children can experience marine activities up close”. Despite the market’s long-standing constraints, he maintains that “surrounded by the sea, Japan still has many opportunities” to foster broader engagement with boating over time.Beatty also sees evidence that generational attitudes are beginning to shift. Younger buyers, he argues, show a greater appetite for larger yachts than their predecessors. “Probably the past 15 years or so,” he said, noting that these buyers “don’t really identify with that bubble time”. Unlike earlier cohorts shaped by the excesses and subsequent collapse of the late 1980s, Beatty describes younger owners as “more adventurous” and less constrained by that historical legacy. Ownership, he suggests, often develops incrementally. “There’s guys with 70, 80-foot yachts that are in their 30s right now,” he said. “By the time they’re 50, they’re running some substantial size yachts.” As ambition grows, however, the limiting factor increasingly becomes whether larger yachts can be operated and based in Japan at all, given regulatory thresholds, crewing requirements and marina limitations.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/377575/image/large-1667448dcb7e90b7b10ce7b101b65997.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/377575">An additional dimension is emerging through foreign demand. Angel Zhou, President of Asia at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>, suggests that non-Japanese buyers may play a growing role in shaping Japan’s brokerage activity. Chinese buyers, she says, are likely to represent “an important share of the Japanese superyacht market in the coming years”, particularly as more high-net-worth individuals choose to reside in the country.&nbsp;That potential, however, remains constrained by structural frictions. Zhou points in particular to the withdrawal of domestic yacht finance providers, which has limited access to mortgage products and slowed the conversion of interest into completed transactions. Were finance providers to re-enter the market, especially for yachts in the 20 to 40-metre range, she argues that it “would significantly accelerate market expansion” by broadening access to ownership.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/386863/image/large-58c4ccbfb716dce2b59f06ad26c0f064.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/386863">Japan’s brokerage market is unlikely to expand rapidly, but nor is it static. Demographic turnover, shifting generational attitudes and growing foreign participation may widen activity incrementally, even as structural constraints continue to cap overall scale.
