While battery production does have an environmental footprint, the reduced emissions and fuel consumption during the yacht’s operational life often outweigh it, especially when solar panels or shore power from renewable sources are used.&nbsp;Advances in battery chemistry, such as lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and solid-state developments on the horizon, have increased safety, longevity, and recyclability. Over time, grid decarbonisation and second-life battery programs will further improve the equation.How could AI and smart systems be used to optimise energy consumption, monitor environmental performance, and predict maintenance needs?AI and smart systems are game changers. They can optimise propulsion by learning cruising habits and suggesting efficient modes and predict maintenance by monitoring engine health, battery cycles, and system usage. They could also reduce waste by automatically managing HVAC, lighting, and power systems based on occupancy. Maarten: The provisioning approach we introduced in 2018 already filled a gap. But we saw a bigger opportunity: applying that same approach to Interior and Technical Supplies. With our own transport going directly to yachts, we avoided relying on couriers. That gave us full control and speed. Joost: Traditional suppliers are stuck in old systems. We made ourselves a promise early on: we’d only move forward if we could do it 100 percent right, with the right systems, the right people and the right expertise. Once the galley department was exactly how we envisioned it, we expanded, first to Interior, then to Technical Supplies. Every department is led by specialists who never do things halfway. Anyone can deliver an apple or a pear. What sets us apart is how we think, more like a partner than a supplier. We always start with an intake. Based on that, we create a yacht profile so we know exactly what’s needed on board. It’s like a Michelin restaurant, once you’ve been, they remember what you liked and what you didn’t. We also understand how to deliver goods in difficult countries, dealing with paperwork, local rules and customs. Our work goes far beyond logistics. We advise on ingredients and delivery locations. How do you handle provisioning in those parts of the world? Joost: Yachts are pushing into places like Antarctica, Greenland and Tahiti, and we move with them. Being a global partner means finding solutions where others see limitations. We always start by checking if commercial flights are possible; it's the most cost-effective option. If not, we look into chartered flights and handle local authorities directly. What sets us apart is that we don’t just react, we anticipate. We advise clients on the smartest provisioning locations based on their schedule and timing. Guests don’t want to take a risk and end up with poor quality. After all, when people return from holiday, there are always two questions: ‘How was the weather? ' and ‘What did you eat?’ We can’t control the weather, but we can influence the food. That’s why we sometimes recommend stocking up earlier, in ports where import is easier and quality is higher. Later, at more complex destinations, yachts can top up with fresh produce. Topping up locally with small, frequent purchases helps maintain quality. Sometimes we can’t deliver everything ourselves, and we’re honest about that. We’ll suggest a trusted local partner or share contacts. Clients want things faster, delivered more smoothly and with more personal service, all at once. Lead times are getting shorter, while in the past, there used to be more room to plan. That’s also driven by the new generation, as many people think everything is instantly available. But what most forget is that true craftsmanship takes time.&nbsp;Creating a high-quality product doesn't happen overnight. We try to anticipate that by building stock and making clear agreements with our suppliers, so they know what to expect and can prepare accordingly. But it can still be challenging to deliver the level of quality clients expect within such a short time frame. Joost: We don’t say yes to everything. We’d rather do something properly or not at all. Joost: This is my playground! We’ve explored Japan, but South Korea has recently blown us away. The products coming from there — meats, vinegars, dry goods — are incredibly refined. In many ways, they go even further than Japan in terms of quality. The yachting world has long focused on American, Australian and Japanese meats. But in the past year and a half, we’ve seen a shift. There’s a growing demand for grass-fed European options. We dove into what’s possible and found exceptional farms in Italy and Northern Spain. Carima breeds, Rubia Gallega oxen aged 15 to 16 years, offer a fantastic depth of flavour. When chefs serve that to American guests and hear, “Wow, there’s so much flavour in this,” that’s what drives me. We work with suppliers who truly care. We were able to quickly establish a new facility there, and we are now building our new ULTIMA catamarans at this site. We actively participate in local boat shows across the UAE and have an office in Dubai to stay connected with the market. The region has a strong appetite for new technology and is very forward-thinking, which aligns perfectly with our vision. This is a trend that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> is setting in the industry. We want to demonstrate that superyachts can be both energy-efficient and have a positive environmental image. We have a separate superyacht team of specialists and facilities that are perfectly adapted to large projects.&nbsp;How do you balance customisation and scalability when developing larger, more complex multihulls, particularly as the demand for bespoke interiors and hybrid systems increases?For the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> 43-meter model, we carried out the world’s largest single-shot composite hull infusion, which is a significant technical achievement. The composite structure is fully adapted to integrate solar cells. To ensure efficiency without compromising customisation, the interiors are constructed in a separate, dedicated area. My role centres on Falmouth, ensuring clear ownership and direction. Stephen Hills can now focus on the Group’s commercial activities and Toby Allies on client engagement. We’re planning both in five-year and 15-year horizons – not just business goals, but also how we’re perceived by the community and the industry as a whole.&nbsp;We are also making physical amendments to the yard in Falmouth and have secured planning permission to raise the roof on part of the dry dock, which will allow larger vessels with more air draft to enter. We’re also extending Hall 3 – where <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6289" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fox34.86m (114'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd2024">Fox</a> was built – by 40 metres, adding capacity, workshops, and new technology. Currently we can handle a single 75 metre and a 50 metre yacht simultaneously. Over recent years we’ve completed some highly significant rebuilds and reconstructions such as the classic motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/534" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marala58.8m (192'11&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1931">Marala</a> and more recently <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jester68.8m (225'9&quot;)OY Laivateollisuus1972">Jester</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/697" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seawolf58.83m (193'0&quot;)J. & K. Smits Scheepswerven N.V.1957">Seawolf</a>, which have shone the light on our refit capabilities.&nbsp;The completion of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6289" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fox34.86m (114'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd2024">Fox</a> last year, however, was an opportunity to demonstrate to the industry that our expertise is excellently translated to the completion of complex new-builds. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6289" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fox34.86m (114'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd2024">Fox</a> was an unusual project, coming to us in a partially completed state, we were able to employ a lot of our technological and design abilities to the yacht and put our own print on it. The final yacht has been extremely well received, and we are certainly open to more new-builds, though we do not have plans to transition into a solely new-build yard. &nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis Falmouth</a> is a full-service shipyard, and we employ all of our staff directly which gives us excellent control over timelines and quality. That being said, in the past 18 months we’ve had the aforementioned and highly significant rebuild of the 58.83-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/697" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seawolf58.83m (193'0&quot;)J. & K. Our long-serving team means many of the people who worked on a yacht years ago are still here for its next visit, and the lessons learned from refits directly inform our new-build practices, which I think makes it a very solid combined offering. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/360146/image/large-1b3d0f93fb14ef19b9957d6841a91d7b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/360146"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis Falmouth</a>&nbsp;has made significant investments in technology, could you elaborate on that with some specifics?&nbsp;In the first instance with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6289" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fox34.86m (114'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd2024">Fox</a>, we used our 3D scanning capability to capture the built structural environment accurately so that we could then allocate the net space to systems engineering and allow the modelling of the interior carpentry and cabinetry to be developed in the envelope. Further to this to improve production efficiency and quality we elected not to use drawings but had the live digital models on iPad for the production teams to use for installation. This was a first step, next time I can see this being further augmented in some way to further improve the outcomes.&nbsp;At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis</a> we’re always looking to improve our facilities and services, and our most recent technological development has been the opening of a new Digital Manufacturing Centre (DMC) on-site in Falmouth. The DMC extends our current capability with additional CNC cutting, profiling and machining equipment to fully leverage our existing 3D scanning and design capability.&nbsp;On-site we have a CNC water cutting machine capable of cutting almost any material 200 mm thick, 4-metres long by 2-metres wide. We can also tap holes and mark parts if required. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/360149/image/large-350d90b6559d884eb6b7bd6a9db2db94.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/360149">How has the integration of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8215" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Norfolk Interiors (Company)">Norfolk Interiors</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5735" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cockwells (Company)">Cockwells</a>&nbsp;within the&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis</a>&nbsp;portfolio benefited your clients and developed the offering?&nbsp;With the additions of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8215" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Norfolk Interiors (Company)">Norfolk Interiors</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5735" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cockwells (Company)">Cockwells</a> our clients can benefit from the increased capabilities and experience that each subsidiary brings, whether it's designing and building bespoke interiors or offering high quality custom tenders. We think each brings coherency to our offering as a high-quality provider in the industry. Falmouth acts as the mothership, sharing technical expertise and benefiting from reciprocal knowledge exchange. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2873" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Vilanova (Company)"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/351395/image/large-0d4f8dea45977909dcede234952a63d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/351395">Pendennis</a>&nbsp;has tended to favour a few long-term projects alongside maintenance work, rather than overloading. Is that still the case?&nbsp;Absolutely. As a full-service yard, the trade mix needs to fit. Long-term projects allow us to manage resources efficiently while also handling shorter refits. It means our technical and design specialists can contribute real value across the board.&nbsp;We’re not an out-and-out new build yard, nor just a quick refit stop. Clients come to us for technically challenging projects or tight timelines. We aim to deliver Northern European standards but with a more tailored service and continuity through facilities like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2873" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Vilanova (Company)">Vilanova</a>.&nbsp;We operate year-round, and the maritime tradition here means people love working at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis</a>. With a motivated workforce spanning generations, we’re committed to delivering excellent service. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/360144/image/large-0a275b5f3e56089f2708c16213d90fd0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/360144">How central is team longevity and training to&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis</a>?&nbsp;Very central. Our average workforce age is around 37, thanks to ongoing apprenticeships. But we also have veterans who’ve been here since day one – there’s a wealth of knowledge, around 6 million man-hours. We recently repaired a timber sailing yacht’s hull using techniques mastered over decades. That continuity and expertise defines us. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/360148/image/large-f798fc5a55378e2e50c5da13b3addf96.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/360148">Finally, what do you see as your biggest challenge in leading Falmouth?&nbsp;A major focus is keeping skills development attractive to young people. We had over 300 attendees at our apprentice evening and 108 applicants for about 20 places – that’s promising. But we must ensure there are clear pathways into management or technical roles. We recently launched a digital manufacturing centre, grouping CNC and profiling tools with 3D scanning and other innovations. And of course, sustainability is a key challenge. We've hired a transformational lead to drive this agenda – it’s the start of a critical journey for the company.&nbsp;

While studying Business Economics at Groningen University, I was part of the Dutch Olympic team in the Flying Dutchman class. To support my sailing, I began trading sailboats.After university, I joined Shell as an oil trader, living and working across Europe, the Middle East and the Caribbean. Sailing became a weekend pursuit. Following the Gulf War – during which I spent five months as a ‘guest’ of Saddam Hussein while serving as GM of Shell Kuwait – I left Shell and took on a global marketing and sales role at Philips. However, the constant relocations began to wear thin. This highly efficient, custom-built vessel won the 2016 European Powerboat of the Year award, making <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Steeler Yachts (Company)">Steeler</a> the first Dutch yard to triumph in this competitive category.When you founded&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Steeler Yachts (Company)">Steeler Yachts</a>&nbsp;in 2010, what gap in the market were you aiming to fill and how has that vision evolved?At the time, steel motoryachts had a poor reputation – slow, boxy, and standardised, often likened to “caravans on the water.” Buyers had little room for personalisation, which felt entirely at odds with the investment required.Steeler was created to change that. From the outset, our philosophy was simple: we don’t sell yachts – we build exactly what each client needs. Full customisation became our cornerstone. Working with designer Martin Bekebrede, we launched the NG series – a platform combining timeless design with exceptional space utilisation. No two builds are alike, and we’ve delivered 110 unique motoryachts to date.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289732/image/large-f411ceaa0c583f40202a4fd04ed2fab5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289732">We also challenged performance expectations. Instead of limiting clients to inland cruising speeds, we designed yachts capable of 10 to 15 knots – ideal for both rivers and coastal waters. As the market responded, recognition followed, with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Steeler Yachts (Company)">Steeler</a> receiving awards and nominations almost every year since 2011. In 2013, we collaborated with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> to develop our first aluminium planing yacht, the NG43 Offshore. Its exceptional efficiency and handling won the European Powerboat of the Year award in 2016 – the first Dutch yard to do so in the production-dominated category.Our move into aluminium planing yachts expanded the concept further. Aluminium offered strength, efficiency, and stability – a compelling alternative to mass-produced fibreglass yachts. Though more costly to build, the result was a better yacht.While our client-first approach mirrors that of Dutch superyacht builders, it’s rare in the 50 to 100-foot segment. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Steeler Yachts (Company)">Steeler</a> now attracts owners seeking a more private, lower-maintenance alternative to larger yachts – without compromising on quality. First, limited resources for global marketing have made it difficult to reach our niche audience – highly discerning clients who often don’t know about us until they “discover” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Steeler Yachts (Company)">Steeler</a>. Fortunately, once they do, our 99% customer loyalty since 2010 speaks volumes.Second, inflation presents risks during our typical two-year build cycle. This requires a foundation of trust and transparency with clients to navigate unexpected cost fluctuations together.What sets&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Steeler Yachts (Company)">Steeler Yachts</a>&nbsp;apart in a highly competitive industry?In the 50 to 100-foot segment, our proposition is unique: full customisation, innovative design, personal service, and top-tier craftsmanship. Production in Meppel, the Netherlands has resumed at full strength, with both teams now working seamlessly together. Initially, there was natural rivalry – we had been competitors for years. But through open dialogue, shared vision, and simply working side-by-side, that tension quickly turned into mutual respect. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/396" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Vauban (Company)">Port Vauban</a> in Antibes has announced that it is now able to provide liquid hydrogen (LH2) bunkering for superyachts. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/364025/image/large-308ca719bb54b74e10571c97932d34b7.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/364025">The announcement followed several years of preparation involving <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/396" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Vauban (Company)">Port Vauban</a>, international liquid hydrogen specialists, bunkering companies, the Antibes SDIS, the port authority and departments of the town of Antibes-Juan-les-Pins.Since 2023, the port’s managing entity SAS Vauban 21 has refurbished and enlarged part of the outer harbour at the IYCA quay to support this capability. The refuelling can be carried out by lorry over several hours, with no fixed installations or on-site storage of liquid hydrogen required. Operations take place on a designated concrete surface, with connections made between the refuelling truck and the yacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/329190/image/large-830f185f787f1b158d68274659f19d8b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/329190">Each refuelling is subject to validation by the port and port authority and is conducted under a strict protocol based on a dedicated risk analysis. Founded in the early 1980s, the Italian brand has established a reputation for producing fast motor yachts with distinctive designs and technical features. Last week the yard invited a number of international journalists, including SuperYacht Times’ Francesca Webster to its Mondolfo facility to experience <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/584" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pershing S.p.a. Pershing is marking its 40th anniversary in 2025, commemorating four decades of production, innovation and expansion in the yachting sector.

The 118.8-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8907" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Breakthrough118.8m (389'9&quot;)Feadship2025">Breakthrough</a> has been spotted in Antibes, France by photographer Léandre Loyseau of Yachts.mp4.
