Westrec Marinas is pleased to announce that Michael J. Horn, Marina Manager of the Harbour Towne Marina in Dania Beach, Florida has been awarded the CMM (Certified Marina Manager) designation at the recent IMBC (International Marina and Boatyard Conference) in Tampa, Florida in January 2010.
With marina experience that dates back to 1998, Mike Horn’s progression to CMM is based on an increasingly vital and visible level of facility experience and responsibility over the years. Starting his marine career with the City of Fort Lauderdale, he ultimately became Dockmaster (from 1998-2006) of the Las Olas Marina and reported directly to the City of Fort Lauderdale Supervisor of Marine Facilities. He joined WESTREC Marinas as Marina Manager of its Harbour Towne Marina in 2007.
The requirements to become a Certified Marina Manager are extensive and are rivaled only by an exacting course curriculum.
Presented by IMI (International Marina Institute, a subsidiary of the Association of Marina Industries), CMM candidates must have five years marina general-manager experience, have managed a marina operation with an annual gross operating revenue of at least $1 million, have managed a marina business with at least 100 boats in wet slips, moorings, and/or dry-rack storage slots, and have spent at least 60% of his or her time on financial planning, marketing, customer relations, and staff administration.
More, candidates must have successfully completed course work in the following areas: personal development/management skills, marketing and customer service, industry trends, safety and health, environmental compliance, marine law and liability, human-resource management, emergency management, contract law, facility design and redevelopment, and presentations and public speaking.
“A mainstay of our successful management strategy is incorporating the marina industry’s best business practices,” says Gary Groenewold, Westrec’s Vice President. “IMI’s CMM program is demanding and requires our marina managers to integrate comprehensive facility, management and customer service procedures into day-to-day marina operations, a winning combination we continue to experience throughout our operations,” he continues.
Like all CMMs, Mike Horn is required to continue his professional development in order to be recertified as a CMM on an annual basis. In the meantime, his most recent accomplishment adds even more acclaim to the highly regarded Harbour Towne Marina.
