France-based builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/416" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocea (Company)">OCEA</a> has announced that the fourth hull in the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/416" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocea (Company)">OCEA</a> Commuter 108 yacht series is nearing completion. The hull of the 60-metre superyacht Feadship 713 has been spotted in transit from the Feadship De Vries Group <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5058" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scheepswerf Slob (Company)">Scheepswerf Slob</a> facility in Papendrecht near Rotterdam. Yacht building has changed insofar as you used to be able to plan a year or two in advance – now you have to look two or three years ahead.It is important to point out that although series yachts are broadly similar and based on the same hull form, no two yachts are exactly alike. The interiors are always bespoke, but depending on when they come into the project owners can personalise other aspects of the design. At the beginning we can do a lot, even change the superstructure and engine package. But once we start cutting metal limitations start to appear and to accommodate more sweeping changes close to launch we may have to revise the build schedule, which is something we try to avoid. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/92787/image/large-25fbaa062214a0955512eecbe552c80e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/92787">Erica (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6107" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Toute Sweet49.8m (163'5&quot;)Heesen Yachts2019">Toute Sweet</a>), for example, was started on spec as the third hull in our 50-metre aluminium series. Negotiations with the original owner began just before the hull and superstructure were joined. He asked for larger diesel engines instead of a hybrid package and wanted to change the interior layout, as well as parts of the superstructure. These were major modifications, but we were able to accommodate them without impacting the rest of our production.Another point to remember is that we build only 6-12 units in each series and as in the automotive world, we introduce a life-cycle change after every fourth or sixth hull. This allows us to adapt the product to stay close to the market and technological developments, but also avoid an over-supply of the same yachts down the line when they enter the pre-owned market.We use the term semi-custom to describe projects that are based on a proven hull form, but where the superstructure is restyled to suit individual customer choice. The yachts feel and look totally different, but we already know what their performance will be because they are based on a common engineering platform. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/180693/image/large-369d03d050e5961dec7f6bcd99e51831.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/180693">This is something that car coach builders used to do – you would buy a chassis that would be used as the starting point. Examples of semi-custom Heesen yachts are 56-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6053" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galvas56.0m (183'9&quot;)Heesen Yachts2019">Galvas</a> with superstructure styling by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2 Yacht Design</a>, which was a development of our 55-metre FDHF steel platform, and 51-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5934" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Irisha51.0m (167'4&quot;)Heesen Yachts2018">Irisha</a> with exterior design by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/168" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Harrison Eidsgaard (Company)">Harrison Eidsgaard</a>that was based on our popular 5000 aluminium class.Then there are the full-custom yachts like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/54128" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Project Cosmos undergoes technical launch from Heesen's facilities in Oss (2021-11-22 19:45:00 +0100)">Project Cosmos</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/53712" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Construction well underway on 60m Heesen superyacht Project SkyFall (2021-09-17 11:45:00 +0200)">Project Skyfall</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5603" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galactica Super Nova70.07m (229'11&quot;)Heesen Yachts2016">Galactica Super Nova</a>. Most of the time, the customer comes in and the yacht is designed from scratch, although we usually have something in the drawer that we can work on, as in the case of Project Sparta that is based on the Avanti design concept by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/69" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Winch Design (Company)">Winch Design</a>. These projects tend to take at least six months longer to complete because we have to do a lot of extra engineering.Some owners stipulate in the contract that a one-off design cannot be reproduced; others are more easygoing. It really depends on our relationship with the customer.&nbsp;At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a>, we have the in-house engineering capacity for one full-custom project per year. Any more than that and we have to start in-sourcing some engineering know-how. Alongside we can handle one semi-custom project and two or three series yachts. We can adapt our workflow, but the stretch starts when we have two semi-custom projects that start close together, for example, because we have to scramble all our resources at the pre-production stage. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203441/image/large-97b1239218ba86042e1e919ae7361168.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203441">In the past, we’ve had to turn down a couple of full-custom projects because we just couldn’t take on the extra work they require. You also have to remember that we are limited by the length, beam, height and draft of what we can produce because to reach the sea from the Heesen shipyard in Oss the yachts have to move through the Dutch canal system.Generally speaking, one of the biggest challenges is managing client expectations for the series or semi-custom projects.For instance, if an owner arrives late in the build cycle and wants all kinds of changes, we have to gently explain what we can and cannot do. It might also simply be too costly. We have to be very careful that these instances don’t start a snowball effect in our production that takes up too many resources.&nbsp;If there is a significant delay in the build cycle of one project, it can affect others, which can be very risky for the shipyard. We have managed significant changes without issues, but there have been other cases where we felt we couldn’t accommodate all the changes requested and had to let the customer go. More commonly, an owner will decide to take the next available yacht and start the customisation process earlier, but in that case they have to be willing to wait a bit longer.&nbsp;Needless to say, at Heesen we always tries to cater to client requests and create the capacity, but not if it puts the rest of our production at risk.&nbsp;

Though the superyacht business is a relatively small industry, it is packed with international professionals from all walks of life, and it can certainly be easy to get lost in the sea of faces we're presented with at boat shows, yachting events and beyond. In this series of articles, we take a step back from rushed business meetings and hurried networking and sit down with professionals from across the wide spectrum of the superyacht business to learn more about who they are and what they do for the industry. In this week’s episode, we get to know the design trio behind the Harrison Eidsgaard studio in London, Peder Eidsgaard, Ewa Eidsgaard and Ben Harrison.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/20956/image/large-87a57ab00f683f58c8be2ea512d4b8df.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20956">The studio is run by three Directors, Peder and Ewa and Ben. Tell us what lead to your collaboration. The studio was established in 2005 and expanded to include all three Directors by 2007. A collective love of similar aesthetic taste and the wish to create an exceptional design hub initially brought the three of us together.What are some of your major milestones over the years?The first major superyacht launched by our studio was the Wally sailing yacht Saudade for which we were responsible for both interior design and exterior styling. At the time this was the largest and most sophisticated yacht in the Wally fleet, and over the years has been an impressive presence on the racing circuit. Probably our most significant milestone as a company, however, has to be the launch of the 77.8-metre Feadship Tango for which we were also responsible for both turnkey interior and exterior design. Receiving the award for Yacht of the Year for her in 2012 was a wonderful way of announcing our arrival to the world of yacht design. Since then we have delivered nine yachts, four residential projects, 25 private aircraft and helicopters (these were through sister company Pegasus Design), and we currently have three more large yacht projects scheduled for delivery in the next year, the largest being the 95-metre Lürssen Fiji.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/17064/image/large-52c88c43c1609151aa3b4b6a9bf36dce.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/17064">You recently presented a new 86-metre explorer concept with CRN. The term 'explorer' is used a lot in this business - what makes this project a true explorer?&nbsp;The term explorer is currently used a lot in the industry, and ultimately the extent of exploration is down to how an owner intends to use his or her yacht. In the development of this yacht, we decided to optimise the exploration capabilities of the yacht for long distance passage making and extended periods of time at sea. The foredeck area is designed to accommodate large auxiliary vessels which could comprise of covered offshore tenders, submarines, landing craft etc. The focus on swift deployment of exploration toys with the crew maintaining an overview of these aspects at all times makes the boat optimised for operation in all kinds of weather.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/20976/image/large-00d4b898ecd6210eba38a8155a325ed7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20976"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/20975/image/large-54ca70c3a4571f1ff77b246f666d36aa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20975">The heli-landing is located high up on the fly deck, aft of the central stack, allowing a helicopter to be carried on passages consistent with exploration. The spa and pool areas are housed internally allowing guests to still utilise this facility even if the yacht is operating in colder climates. Also discussed with CRN is the possibility to provide an Ice Class hull which would allow the yacht to operate in the most extreme conditions. The final specification, design and capabilities of the yacht depend on a specific owner’s requirements and with CRN we are hugely excited at the opportunity to create a very special and specific long-range superyacht that can accommodate an owner and their guests to the most extreme environments and comfortably operate there for that unique once in a lifetime experience. &nbsp;What were some of the challenges you faced when establishing the concept?The GA is designed to be simple yet flow very well, which is certainly a challenge for any designer to do well. Each saloon features huge windows so that the surroundings can be enjoyed from inside in cold weather, which also simplifies the interior in which we have limited the number of interior walls and surrounded each room with windows and fewer walls.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/20974/image/large-6474ab62b9808b8bf4b87c8c468fd5e0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20974"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/20973/image/large-84fd66bfcae7f1b1679ecc348bdd3758.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20973">What are some of your personal highlights on board?&nbsp;The indoor pool on the lower deck with the massive skylight allows it to be used in both the winter and the summer, which is great. One of our other favourite features is the forward end of the superstructure, which features integrated vertical mullions on the bridge deck and upper deck, which gives the yacht a fairly aggressive look. Another highlight for us is integrated above the wheelhouse, where you can find a forward seating area for guests and owner to enjoy the views forward when cruising but also to see the crew activity during the spectacular launching of the large tenders.

The 80.07-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen Yachts</a> superyacht Project Cosmos, now known as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7394" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galactica80.07m (262'8&quot;)Heesen Yachts2022">Galactica</a>, has been launched in the Netherlands. <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/heesen-s-project-cosmos-launched" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">The yacht, which was first launched in November, is the builders longest and fastest superyacht built to date</a>, setting records for the shipyard with speeds up to 30 knots. Amidships there is an arched motif that defines the upper superstructure and which offers full glazed walls that will no doubt shed an abundance of light on her upper decks. Last February, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen Yachts</a> announced the appointment of Friso Visser as Chief Commercial Officer. Assisted by Sales Manager Robert Drontmann, Visser took over the role from Mark Cavendish, who is now Executive Commercial Officer. Before joining <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a>, Visser spent 18 years as International Sales Director within the Damen Shipyards Group, spending much of his time in Africa. SuperYacht Times caught up with him to find out more about the management reshuffle and the man behind the job title.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/192179/image/large-957d7bc822a6dd9717e2895530a48883.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/192179">What is the strategy behind your appointment as CCO? I can only answer from my point of view, not my bosses, but after eight weeks on the job, I fully understand the strategy that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> wanted to achieve with my appointment. Everyone in the world who owns a yacht knows Mark Cavendish and the amount of knowledge he has is very impressive! Mark is approaching retirement age but he still loves his job, so he was looking to migrate from a leadership role to a one focussing on the transfer of knowledge and experience. Personally, I’m very happy that Mark will remain in the team for another few years as it allows us to continue to benefit from his expertise, but it also means he can take a gradual route towards retirement. So that’s the situation and I must say it works well for everyone concerned.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/192182/image/large-60f9b1bb2cea376e469187bfedaab6fd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/192182">What attracted you to the&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a>&nbsp;brand? I worked for Damen Shipyards for much of my professional life, so I’m accustomed to working for a leader in its field. I found <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> to be equally as capable in the superyacht world and that attracted me a lot. I firmly believe that if you want to buy a superyacht you should go to a Dutch yard, with all due respect to other brands. I also liked the fact that the company is driven by innovation and quality and that they build semi-custom vessels on speculation. And if you go deeper, you see there are some good people working here and it’s a great team to work with. It’s not very big, so the lines of communication are short and it’s all very hands-on, which is something I adore. So all these factors mean it’s a bit like being a kid in the proverbial candy store for a commercial person like me.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/192183/image/large-6454e4fcd577df6a8840c0214add6fa0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/192183">How relevant are your 18 years with Damen Shipyards in your current role? Working in Africa for Damen Shipyards Group – from Cape Verde, Angola and Mozambique to South Africa, Madagascar, Mauritius and the Seychelles – gave me an enormous amount of experience of different business cultures. During those 18 years I was exposed to all aspects of the international maritime industry, which meant I have learnt to adapt my sales skills to the language and country I find myself in. I was also closely involved in the realisation of the Damen Shipyards facility in South Africa, so that gave me inside knowledge of how a shipyard is run from an operational point of view and how important production decisions are made. In this sense, commercial shipbuilding and yacht building have a lot in common and all this experience comes in handy every day in my current position. In fact, when I’m in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> board meetings I recognise situations, both commercial and operational, from having boots on the ground in my previous job.The new-build sector has weathered the pandemic very well and&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a>&nbsp;has sold five yachts in the last year. How do you see the market over the next 12 months? We saw an increase in demand for our yachts in Q4 of last year and are continuing to see the same level of interest now. We expect things to remain stable through to the end of the year, and we’re therefore cautiously optimistic about 2021. Yachting has always been a life-affirming way to discover new places and enjoy new experiences, and that has never been truer than now. It is one of the great freedoms and feeds the nomadic soul that exists within us all. I think that today more than ever, a yacht represents a safe place to gather with family and friends.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/192180/image/large-8990a0d8318e712b7858d70b0424a80c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/192180">You are also Honorary Consul to the Republic of Cabo Verde, which is certainly different! How did that come about? Business is about making a profit for your employers, but on a personal level there is much more to life than just making money, and I suppose you could say this is my way of giving something back. In 2003, when I joined Damen Shipyard Group I became responsible for operations in some African countries that were less privileged but with great opportunities, and I wanted to help them achieve those opportunities. I was approached to help improve the transport between the islands of the Cabo Verde archipelago and by the Coast Guard to assist them in fighting drug trafficking from the US and South America. I stepped beyond my job description and got these two projects up and moving. As a sign of their gratitude, the government of Cabo Verde later asked me to continue working for the country as their Honorary Consul in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which I accepted. I must say it is a true honour for me to be a little bit part of the Cape Verdean community!
