As some of the guests take the jet ski’s to explore a nearby village built around a natural harbour, other test out the flyboards, subs, SeaBobs and wakeboards. Spetses exudes elegance with horse-drawn carriages being one preferred mode of transport due to restrictions on private vehicles.Once there, we explore rich captains’ mansions turned museums, followed by an evening visit of a local church to celebrate Greek Easter. Candles and fireworks light up the small street, and as night falls upon Spetses, we enjoy cocktails on board followed by a truly spectacular dinner. Our party all votes the chef, who won the Chef’s Competition at the 2024 Mediterranean Yacht Show, as the best we ever experienced on a yacht. Outclassed by their lineup featuring a skilled break dancer, we had no choice but to concede defeat, leaving the crew to triumphantly claim the prize.The next dawn found us anchored along the fragrant, pine-laden southern coast of Poros. Tied up so close to the shore, it felt as if we can reach out and brush the island with our fingertips. A bustle of excitement lures us towards the swim platform where, to our amazement, Africa's crew is assembling an enormous barbecue. "What's a Greek Easter without the quintessential lamb roast?" Adonis proclaimed. As if on cue, the deckhands emerge bearing an entire lamb which would spend the ensuing hours slowly turning over the glowing embers. When most people envision superyacht cruising destinations, their minds often wander to the sun-soaked Caribbean or the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean. Yet the provinces of Atlantic Canada, also known as the Maritime Provinces, with their rugged charm and allure, are not typically the first superyacht cruising destinations that spring to mind. Despite this, many superyachts venture into this region. Atlantic Canada encompasses four distinct provinces: Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland &amp; Labrador.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300254/image/large-46eae81c53fc4431b2a8c8e1d69a8081.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300254"><a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht Times</a> recently engaged in a discussion with Adam and Amanda Langley, founders of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7520" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht East Coast (Company)">Superyacht East Coast</a>, a company specialising in promoting the development and interconnection of marinas in the region to optimise their operational efficiency. Adam, with his prior experience in marine operations and development for Develop Nova Scotia, a government initiative, observed that many yachts were initially unaware of Nova Scotia as a destination, perceiving it as remote, despite its proximity to the Northeast Coast of the United States.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300294/image/large-2a2af7718170971c61b1d78e74764f01.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300294">Data sourced from <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht Times</a>&nbsp; covering the period from 2022 onwards, illustrates a consistent number of superyacht visits to Atlantic Canada during the summer months. A deeper analysis reveals that there were 35 superyacht visits in 2023, closely paralleling the 34 visits in 2022.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300317/image/large-480e666286279f1ae4db7540246e582a.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300317">Reflecting on the increasing presence of superyachts in Atlantic Canada, Adam remarked: “A decade ago, there were barely any superyachts in the region, around a handful. Now, when we attend boat shows in Fort Lauderdale or Palm Beach and mention that about 40 superyachts visited Halifax last summer, people are genuinely shocked.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300307/image/large-48caad71fec562e79e8eec623b09f23b.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300307">Captain Chris Walsh of the 67.75-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/108" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Archimedes67.75m (222'3&quot;)Feadship2008">Archimedes</a> shared his perspective on the region's unique appeal, noting: “my first time in the area was in 2004, the main attraction of Atlantic Canada is its unspoiled nature. With plenty of interesting activities, readily available docks, and numerous harbours, the region is a haven for those who love the outdoors, nature, and wildlife. Its perceived remoteness is misleading, as it's quite accessible from the Northeast Coast of the USA. Its status as a hidden gem is precisely what I find appealing.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300252/image/large-30286e1893f344185741ca7a5fa7f999.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300252">Echoing Walsh’s sentiment, Amanda Langley further underscored the region's growing attraction among superyacht owners. She highlighted the distinct allure of Atlantic Canada, saying, “The distinctive authenticity offers a stark contrast to the experiences in places like Florida and Monaco.” She explained that owners are increasingly attracted to the region, not in search of experiences akin to those found in Fort Lauderdale, but for the novel and enriching adventures exclusive to this region.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300255/image/large-b63172d5acac87e80173f7bb72e548ee.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300255">In discussing the diversity of cruising destinations within Atlantic Canada, Adam and Amanda highlighted approximately five distinct areas, each with their own charm and challenges. They specifically emphasised the Bay of Fundy, famous for having the world's highest tides. Recognising the concerns these conditions may pose for captains, they stated: “We ensure superyacht captains venturing into the region have a thorough understanding of the local maritime environments by providing advice and guidance to support diverse itineraries and safe navigation through our waters.” As for Fundy’s tides, they only impact a small portion of the province with the rest of Nova Scotia experiencing 1.5–2.5 metre tidal ranges.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300286/image/large-7083005641923f9e5a9c0c1706f6f8f9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300286">Captain Emile Bootsma of the 60.35-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/185" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Blue Moon60.35m (197'12&quot;)Feadship2005">Blue Moon</a> described the region with vivid enthusiasm. “It possesses beauty to match Maine and the isolation akin to Alaska, offering everything an adventurous superyacht owner could desire and more. The region has gorgeous, isolated anchorages, flat calm waters, and an abundance of cultural and historic interests”.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300302/image/large-4160adbd48b60fff2cee92e43ddbce5f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300302">Expanding on the region's diversity, Adam states, “On the western shore of Nova Scotia, there's a body of water we affectionately refer to the Mediterranean of the North with water temperatures that surprisingly reach into the high 20s Celsius during summer, often warmer than many expect.” He continued, “Additionally, our province is home to Cape Breton Island, which has an inland sea. Remarkably, a 200-foot yacht can navigate through a canal to enter this brackish, saltwater habitat known as The Bras d’Or Lake.” Amanda chimed in, commenting: “I believe it's yachting’s best-kept secret. He shared his experiences, stating, “Visiting Cape Breton feels like a reconnection to the essence of the maritime world. It's a sentiment we all deeply appreciate”. He also reflected on his journey to southern Newfoundland, drawing a captivating comparison: “The experience there was remarkable. Additionally, several other courses in the vicinity deserve world-class recognition for their quality and challenge. Notably, on nearby Prince Edward Island, Dundarave and Crowbush stand out. This legacy has cultivated a wealth of professional services and maritime expertise, catering to a broad spectrum of needs, ranging from commercial and recreational vessels to superyachts. Adam Langley, emphasising this point, stated, “A crucial factor that reassures captains is the region's developing shipyard and marine service providers. The city’s robust infrastructure contributes to its appeal as a superyacht hub. Elaborating on Halifax's allure, Amanda noted, “Superyachts can dock right in the heart of the city, providing immediate access to the finest restaurants, art galleries, and museums. You're essentially at the centre of everything. Moreover, the proximity to an international airport simplifies logistics for guests and crew, including arrivals and changes.”In further sharing his insights, Captain Bracewell highlighted the city’s charm. “Halifax is an exceptional city with a vibrant food culture and fantastic restaurants,”. He further added, &nbsp;“What’s more, just a six to ten-hour cruise away, you can reach remarkably remote areas. Still presided over by the original founder Matjaž Murko today, the company now represents several brands of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> and operates across various Central and Eastern European countries, with a strong presence along the Adriatic coast.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/328602/image/large-f0b53309825f90cea989c7c504d55069.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/328602">What led to your entry into the yachting industry?I was born in Germany and moved to Slovenia in 1972 when I was ten years old. Shortly thereafter, I joined a well-known sailing club in Slovenia named Pirate. From a young age, I exhibited an entrepreneurial spirit; my first venture was founding a windsurfing school with a friend, catering to tourists on the beach. It's important to note the geographic significance of Slovenia, which is bordered by Italy to the west and Croatia to the south and east. Slovenia attracts many visitors from the Czech Republic and other Eastern European countries. Additionally, our linguistic similarities foster a welcoming environment for these tourists.This early experience further fueled my interest in the nautical industry, which prompted me to explore additional opportunities. My breakthrough came at the Genoa Boat Show in 1994, where I discovered the Pershing brand. Just a few months later, I signed a contract with the shipyard and acquired two yachts, a 60-footer and a 70-footer and began actively promoting Pershing in the Adriatic.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/328599/image/large-fe3e86a9dd94651ebd8b14f1582ea966.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/328599">Could you elaborate on your close ties with various Ferretti Group brands and how it came to be that you represented them?In 1998, following <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/584" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pershing S.p.a. (Company)">Pershing</a>'s acquisition by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a>, Pershing recommended us as a dealer for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> brands in Austria, Slovenia, and other parts of Europe. We promptly signed the contract and officially started our dealership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti</a> in 2000. As the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> expanded and integrated brands such as Riva, we also began representing them in our markets.Currently, we represent all <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> brands, except for CRN and Wally, across several regions. Our markets include Austria, Germany (specifically clients in the Adriatic region for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/361" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Yachts (Company)">Ferretti Yachts</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/584" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pershing S.p.a. (Company)">Pershing</a>, and Itama), the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Albania. Over the past twenty years, these countries have seen economic development, though they still face certain challenges. Despite our wide geographic reach, we encounter specific local preferences. In Hungary for example, there is a strong preference for conducting business in Hungarian. As a result we maintain an office in Budapest to accommodate this need, despite its landlocked location. We also have an office in Prague, Czech Republic, and one in Belgrade, Serbia. When operations began, back in 1994, sourcing essential components such as generator impellers posed significant challenges. Damage to an impeller could disable the entire generator, disrupting critical onboard functions, including cooking, yet obtaining these components was complicated by supply distribution issues. Indeed, Slovenia and Croatia were not part of the European Union at that time, leading to intricate customs and logistics scenarios.To address these challenges, we significantly expanded our service network, which now covers all major marinas and key cruising locations along the Adriatic coast. Thanks to our local network and expertise, we are known for our rapid response times, a fact acknowledged by our clients and competitors alike.Our team comprises highly experienced professionals, some of whom have been with us for 15-20 years. With the increasing complexity of yachts due to advanced technology and design features, it is imperative to stay at the forefront of service excellence. Moreover, we hosted a similar event last year where we invited all our clients and provided entertainment with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5733" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Technohull (Company)">Technohull</a> luxury RIBs, for which we are also the official regional dealers.These events, along with our yearly magazine and our 30th anniversary book, significantly enhance client engagement. Crucially, they also provide us with deeper insights into our clients' perspectives, such as whether they are considering acquiring a new yacht because their current one is becoming outdated or too small. Despite these successes, we recognise areas that require further improvement.Currently, like many in the industry, we face a shortage of skilled labour, particularly mechanics and electricians. The growth of our fleet has outpaced our staffing capabilities, highlighting the critical need to balance the number of yachts with employee recruitment to enhance our operations.Moreover, we have been improving our technological capabilities by investing in software programs that aim to more efficiently understand the yachts clients desire. This will better facilitate our sales strategies and improve our ability to track client inquiries and preferences. For instance, if a client expressed interest in a specific type of superyacht a year ago, these new systems will allow us to process that information more quickly and accurately. We have a dedicated team, much like a family, where each member, including my son, plays a crucial role. Together, we are committed to continuing our legacy for many more years to come.
