The famous yacht historian Malcolm Wood, who has collated by far the most comprehensive historical archive on the yachting industry, is in need of assistance. She was commissioned in 1906 as a private steam yacht by Scotsman Robert Stewart of Islington, who required a yacht to travel around his land in Kinlochmoidart, at the head of Loch Moidart in Scotland.He commissioned the renowned naval architect <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/275" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="G.L. Watson & Co. Ltd (Company)">G.L Watson</a> to construct her under the name Minota, making her one of the earliest steamboats equipped with electricity and onboard lighting. Minota later served in both World Wars with the Royal Navy and underwent a conversion from steam to diesel between 1945 and 1955.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/320205/image/large-00859813cf073e395d74f8f199eb0306.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/320205">During this time the vessel sailed under the names Cortynia and Odysseia and was owned by a plethora of people, before she was purchased by one of her most famous owners, actor Richard Burton. He eventually purchased the yacht in 2019 at auction and ended up spending four times the amount he paid to restore her.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/295451/image/large-ab01c7d93e92359c251efe0ac594c699.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/295451">Lasting four months, the refit saw all new modern solutions integrated into <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1737" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kalizma50.29m (164'12&quot;)Ramage & Ferguson1906">Kalizma</a>'s design, while remaining true to her historical aesthetics. Her three main engines and two diesel generators were completely overhauled, with the team facing the challenge of limited space onboard.This meant that the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6770" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adriatic 42 (Company)">Adriatic 42</a> had to carefully plan to determine when each team would be able to work, to avoid potential problems and wasted time. Her engine room piping was also replaced, along with the valves on the yacht’s hull.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/319970/image/large-7e0de6e0860b0cdae3c99f660dd01e30.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/319970">However, the biggest job was at her helm, where her steering system and rudder shaft needed to be repaired. To resolve the issue of seawater leakage into the steering compartment, which threatened to permanently damage the mechanism, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6770" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adriatic 42 (Company)">Adriatic 42</a> workers had to literally crawl into parts of the yacht to repair the damage.&nbsp;The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6770" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adriatic 42 (Company)">Adriatic 42</a> engineering department even had to manufacture some new parts for the yacht to ensure everything was installed correctly, and this task was executed masterfully. Crafted under the meticulous eye of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/275" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="G.L. Watson & Co. Ltd (Company)">G.L. Watson</a>, she was launched on 27 February 1902, with the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyd's Register (Company)">Lloyd's Register</a> of Yachts 1903-4, stating she had a length of 44.95-metres. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/318054/image/large-e0bd354cd55034e9b11c29e28a0df50a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/318054">Initially intended to serve as a supporting vessel for the grand schooner-rigged sailing yacht Gleniffer, Triton found her place in the fleet of James Coats Jr, a philanthropist and avid yachtsman. She remained here, moored alongside Gleniffer at the Gourock Bay and was stored at the James Watt Dock in Greenock, Scotland until his death in 1912, when she was passed to his Executors. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303582/image/large-26bc6a9e4be10ea2e9ee5339ac77b6af.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303582">Following the passing of Coats, Triton found herself under new ownership, with her name changed to Rhouma, as she embarked on a new chapter in the hands of Sir George Bullough. A thoroughbred racehorse breeder and Victorian playboy, Sir George Bullough had named her after his first steam-powered yacht of the same name. Although her history is sparse during his ownership, Triton is believed to have later served as an auxiliary patrol yacht for the Royal Naval during the First World War. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303585/image/large-208f8fc69bed9b25c962076c46402a9f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303585">In 1920, Rhouma was registered to Vincent S.E. Grech, who resided at 318 Finchley Road, London, N.W.3. But by 1923, the vessel entered Scott's Shipbuilding &amp; Engineering Co Shipyard in Greenock, where she underwent an extensive rebuild. She was lengthened by almost three-metres to 47.76-metres and was fitted for oil fuel. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303589/image/large-7bcf6b7b48cde74eee8e48bcd611b776.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303589">Rhouma changed hands several times over the next few years, and in 1924 she was registered to Captain C. Oswald Liddell, who renamed her Osprey. By 1938, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyd's Register (Company)">Lloyd's Register</a> of Yachts recorded that the vessel was to be renamed Rhouma, but by the following year, she was renamed Hiniesta and registered to Sir Frederick Preston. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303588/image/large-4795613ecebef959027c25f3d968a19f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303588">During World War II, the yacht found herself at the forefront of innovation, and was employed mostly in the research and development of the HFDF (High Frequency Direction Finder) and also as an anti-submarine craft. Here they viewed 62 surrendered German U-boats anchored in the river Foyle, a stark reminder of the triumph of the Allied forces. Images from the tour showed King George VI, descending from the bridge of the vessel, cheering to crowds and soldiers at Guildhall Square, Londonderry.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303580/image/large-660e8cc9d36586c4eae022387890612d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303580">In 1953, Hiniesta was registered to The International Trust Company of Liberia, in Monrovia, under the name President Roberts, however, in 1954 she was registered to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a> and renamed back to Hiniesta. The yacht was eventually acquired by the Honourable John North, second son of the 8th Earl of Guilford, who headed for the Mediterranean onboard her. But in 1968 North decided to sell the yacht, as she lay dormant in Piraeus, Greece. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/318055/image/large-c0a127e4a3caddff59dc20da10ed9eae.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/318055">In the early 1970s, Hiniesta's journey took an intriguing turn, as she came under the ownership of Konstantinos Keletsekis, a prominent figure within the Greek community. Born in Iran, he was believed to be the President of the Greek community there, with ventures spanning contracting works, shipping, and commercial shrimp fishing. From here, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2831" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Madiz55.4m (181'9&quot;)Ailsa Shipyard1902">Madiz</a> was registered to the Conduct Shipping Company in the 1980s, before she was transferred in 1993 to the Prince Trading Corp, based in Monrovia, Liberia. Specifically designed for offshore fishing, sport fishing boats or sportfisher yachts are purpose-built vessels that specialise in speed and comfort in rough seas, with the technical equipment for big game fishing adventures. Defined by their distinctive lines, long foredeck and flybridge tuna towers, their open layout makes them ideal for battling fish such as marlin and tuna, allowing anglers the opportunity to engage in intense battles with these prized game fish. But what caused the rise in sportfisher yachts?<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/309285/image/large-9ffae369790b9262a91323cae1662b3c.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/309285">In the 1900s, anglers were having trouble fighting big fish while standing, they instead needed a place to sit while fishing with their equipment, prompting the need for seating arrangements during fishing excursions. Recognising the importance of enhanced visibility for targeting larger catches, captains began modifying their vessels. From here, boatbuilders and shipyards received requests to convert boats that had previously been used for catching fish on the market, into pleasure boats to catch fish for fun or sport.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/311265/image/large-60391af01a8875f85cff2cb1dda7a3e6.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/311265">One of the most famous sportfisher yachts of this era is the 38-foot Wheeler boat Pilar, owned by American novelist Ernest Hemingway. In April 1934, Hemingway commissioned Wheeler to build a modified pleasure yacht based on the shipyard’s Playmate model. Built as Wheeler Hull No. 576, she included a built-in fishing livewell for keeping fish alive onboard, engine set-up, and a roller on the transom to aid in hauling large fish onto the boat.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/311264/image/large-2f5b39a549024d70c9435de745244ea3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/311264">It is believed that Pilar, pictured above with Hemingway onboard, was named after his wife Pauline and was one of the first boats equipped with a flybridge and outriggers. According to her builder, she further cemented her legendary status when she was the first boat to bring a giant tuna to Bimini’s docks, undamaged by sharks. She evolved over the years as Hemingway fished onboard her, allowing him to spend longer periods of time at sea. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/311267/image/large-960dc9e9eec7985fc5cc14dd772beaba.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/311267">The war effort helped to aid the development of technology and building materials, with the introduction of materials such as fibreglass being used for aircraft. Building on ideas and skills they had gained from World War II, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/243" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rybovich Shipyards (Company)">Rybovich</a> yard, based in Palm Beach County, Florida, developed a boat dedicated to sportfishing. The custom sportfisher, Miss Chevy II, was launched in 1947 and was credited as being one of the breakthrough yachts that influenced the modern sportfisher boat. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/311266/image/large-b874438f748b8088823fa74f82f2ae58.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/311266">A few years later in 1952, Miss Chevy IV was launched with what would become the signature Rybovich sportfisher look, with a broken sheer, an aluminium tuna-tower, and a transom door. This configuration granted owners extra headroom in the cabin forward, while also reducing the cockpit freeboard to make it easier to haul in large fish.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/275430/image/large-43901b23dde49db5f09e2a44f49625b2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/275430">During this time, other boat builders started to establish themselves as key players in the postwar sportfishing scene. They made the decision to embrace either wood cold-moulding construction techniques, or the emerging fibreglass technology, to develop stronger and lighter boats, a competition that endures in today's market. This combination of factors spurred designers to push the boundaries, resulting in the creation of ever-larger, swifter vessels.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/167093/image/large-1fd68c22f4ae9b2d8f65cf5c616491d3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/167093">Amidst the ongoing evolution of sportfishing yacht construction techniques and propulsion systems, the yachts of today stand as testament to the industry's relentless pursuit of excellence. Modern sportfisher yachts have benefitted from advances in design, materials, and engineering to create faster and more fuel-efficient vessels.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/106444/image/large-00c2ef30b99ee201ce039aa8653cdef5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/106444">Sportfisher yachts still remain popular, with the US dominating the market in both sales and construction. According to Pete Frederiksen, former marketing director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4332" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Viking Yachts (Company)">Viking Yachts</a>, “Fishing in the US is so popular because of the variety, the accessibility and the number of tournaments that pop up all the time.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/183885/image/large-b4e1c341eb744eb2f42e933d3d9bbf84.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/183885">The rise may also be down to the plethora of fish available in US waters. Florida’s east coast is brimming with sailfish, tuna, grouper, kingfish to name a few, with the short journey to the Bahamas and the Caribbean boasting the opportunity to catch bonefish and blue marlins. As well as this, the rise may be down to versatility of sportfisher yachts. Non-angling boaters may choose a sportfisher yacht over other motor yachts, for their ability to handle the chop of waves or rougher waters, as well as their interiors which still remain as luxurious as other motor yachts.Insight: <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/48281" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Insight: Why does the US love sportfishers? There may be several reasons for this, including stricter licensing requirements and a different style of boating in Europe. From here, the Germans completed her repairs and converted her into a minelayer named Kiebitz – the German word for the Lapwing bird, whose crest indicates a royal status and whose long, sharp beak is a symbol of his violent nature. Yacht history: The resilient odyssey of the 117m yacht Galeb

Yachts have often been considered status symbols of the wealthy and privileged, with their silhouettes in ports and harbours across the world standing as emblems of trade, wealth and prestige. With the future of yacht design constantly changing, every detail holds significance; and while diminishing in popularity, the figurehead of a boat once stood as a status symbol of tradition and individual expression. <iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/j9zpU3gPpYI?&amp;wmode=opaque" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe> Figureheads are elaborately carved sculptures mounted at the bow of a ship, holding a rich maritime tradition that extends from ships to yachts, and more recently superyachts. The tradition of figureheads on vessels spans not only centuries, but countries, appearing throughout history across the globe.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300777/image/large-5e60526862a282fa2739e1d42364de56.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300777">Some of the first recorded use of figureheads onboard vessels date back to the Ancient Egyptians from around 3100 B.C. The Ancient Egyptians are said to have carved bull and ram heads, as well as birds onto the forward-most part of a ship's bow, believing that this would make the voyage for those onboard successful, and would also appease the gods.As time progressed, the Romans of the third century would place carvings of their deities on the bows of their galleys. In addition to these divine figures, they were also known to depict centurions to symbolise bravery and strength in combat. This tradition echoes that of the Viking ships which would be adorned with dragons’ heads to ward off malevolent spirits and instil fear into the enemy. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300781/image/large-53535f2e694385e7db560f8d5842d256.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300781">The 11th century Bayeux Tapestry displays the story of William of Normandy’s conquest of England in 1066 and depicts the invading ships embellished with figureheads of lions and dragons to serve as a tangible embodiment of ancient legends and beliefs. However, by the 13th century, a new trend in figureheads had emerged in Northern Europe, with swans becoming the favoured embellishment to signify grace and mobility.By the 17th and early 18th century, the lion was once again among the most common figurehead motifs at the bow of boats, symbolising power and strength of those onboard. But it was also around this time that the use of human forms became more popular in the design of figureheads.&nbsp;By the 18th and 19th centuries, figureheads had reached the pinnacle of their artistry. Often known as the “Golden Age of Sail,” figureheads became more elaborate and ornate during this period. The use of full-length human forms, mostly of classical or mythological figures to represent the name of the vessel, was on the rise, partly due to the illiteracy of many sailors during the period.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300780/image/large-c620de517a577449b2a9ef0811a71f79.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300780">Many figureheads of this period depicted women revealing one or both breasts. Despite prevailing beliefs that having women onboard was unlucky, sailors held superstitions that a semi-naked sculpted female form could calm the storms at sea.Historically, figureheads served both practical and symbolic purposes. They were initially designed to act as a form of spiritual protection for the ship and its crew, often depicting mythological or religious figures believed to offer guidance and safeguard against maritime perils.The figureheads of today however, have transitioned from their traditional role as symbols of protection, to more of an aesthetic and artistic expression of wealth. Named after the Greek Goddess of the dawn, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/669" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="EOS92.92m (304'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2006">EOS</a> features a hand-crafted figurehead at her bow, modelled on Barry Diller’s wife, Diane von Fürstenberg. Crafted in stainless steel by artist Anh Duong, Diane von Fürstenberg modelled for the 2.7-metre figurehead during a series of different sessions.But it's not just sailing yachts that are known to sport figureheads, the modern evolution of maritime aesthetics has led to an increasing rise of motor yachts also showcasing these works of art. The giant stainless-steel chiselled eagle is said to be reminiscent of the eagles seen on the Chrysler Building in New York, and creates a bold vision for onlookers.&nbsp;Animal figureheads have become a popular theme amongst superyacht owners in recent years, with the 65-metre 2013 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/121" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palmer Johnson Yachts (Company)">Palmer Johnson</a> motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3527" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady M65.0m (213'3&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts2013">Lady M</a> displaying a two-metre pouncing cat on her bow. The 100kg jaguar was created using 3D printed structural reinforcements, with its outer shell taking up 5.8 percent of the total volume. Her name derives from the Māori fern-leaf motif, which is a symbol of creation and new beginnings to the native people of New Zealand.When she was launched, online news publications noted how the curvaceous winged figurehead at the bow of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7500" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Koru127.0m (416'8&quot;)Oceanco2023">Koru</a> bore a striking resemblance to Bezos’ fiancé, Lauren Sanchez. The Norse goddess of love, fertility, war, and gold also features a spiral shape necklace, with an unfurling silver fern frond, which signifies creation and perpetual movement.From their origins in ancient civilisations to their modern-day interpretations, figureheads continue to symbolise power, grace, and individuality and shape the identity of yachts. Despite the ever-changing seas of yacht design, figureheads still stand as a reminder of the timeless allure of the ocean and the creativity of the owners onboard.

From refit to refinement: Onboard the 32m Benetti yacht Sounion II

First hitting the water in 1993, the 30.4-metre classic schooner <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12204" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Captain Cook30.4m (99'9&quot;)Güllük Shipyard1993">Captain Cook</a> has been painstakingly restored by current owners Ahmet and Cigdem Ongun, who uncovered an intriguing history that spans back 30 years.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263523/image/large-b54e8db6ed77028c89c5d52b2577b43a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263523">Built by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6768" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Güllük Shipyard (Company)">Güllük Shipyard</a> for an Austrian industrialist, the wooden sailing yacht was originally named Miss Austria. “She was launched the year that Miss Austria became Miss Universe and much like the winner, she had curvaceous lines and proportions; like a gracious lady sitting on the water!” explained owner Ahmet Ongun. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/288753/image/large-d5e9ddef74a5aa44cd47361e696f59e7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/288753">But the story of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12204" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Captain Cook30.4m (99'9&quot;)Güllük Shipyard1993">Captain Cook</a>’s ownership is only just beginning, as her owners Ahmet and Cigdem Ongun didn’t purchase her until 2017. It was this sale that revealed the three decades of history that she holds within her framework and the secrets behind her ownership.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231708/image/large-97f550c5a2ec93eafc8bf68eb094b1cf.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231708"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231632/image/large-dc113ba5c0f7277af7520ab2d83fcf7c.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231632">“Miss Universe continued to sail around Turkey with her Austrian owner until one day a German businessman began circling her on a dinghy asking to come onboard,” said Ahmet Ongun. The businessman had fallen in love with Miss Universe and outright offered to purchase her from her Austrian owner. “The Austrian owner explained that he had only just built the yacht and would not go below €1 million, so the German businessman opened his cheque book and wrote the cheque in front of him, much to everyone’s surprise!”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231710/image/large-5c622f44a70be87d008f677dc5ce385c.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231710">Miss Universe was purchased by the businessman as a gift to his wife and they sailed her to the north Adriatic, where in the following years she was sent to the Caribbean and used as a ‘Honeymoon Charter Yacht’. She was eventually sold to a German family living in Italy, who sailed her in the north Atlantic. It was during this voyage that she was caught in a hurricane and her front mast was damaged and went in for a refit.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231709/image/large-825abfe134847e8c86720f511c1f7f50.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231709"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263542/image/large-52932a95ef86f92501dbfafe0271198e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263542">“After we purchased the yacht we found the original <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4976" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Brooklin Boat Yard (Company)">Brooklin Boat Yard</a> drawings dating back to 1999 onboard. They have everything from the name of the boat, to the engineer, as well as drawing of the two Canadian Pine masts that replaced the originals,” recalled Ahmet Ongun. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231711/image/large-153a2ce9ea2a0300bb35696d300a115f.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231711"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263538/image/large-d6a01d4762e70d790dbed9306520d287.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263538">Throughout the early 2000s the yacht sailed from New York to the Mediterranean, before she was sold to a hotel in Bozburun, Turkey, called Sabrina’s House. “From here she was renamed Miss Sabrina and was used by guests for luxury cruises,” explained Ahmet Ongun. It was during this time that Ahmet and his wife Cigdem Ongun saw her moored directly outside the hotel. “We rushed to see her as she sat there like an ornament on the water,” explained Ahmet Ongun. “She was well-known for being outside the hotel, but she had not been properly maintained and was starting to deteriorate.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231713/image/large-99c6b72722a68379f47d57918a9237c6.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231713"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263539/image/large-df7b751c352e3811c53097327e4814e9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263539">The Ongun’s purchased Miss Sabrina in 2017 and once she was out of the water they started work on her restoration. The work needed was far beyond what they had expected, but they made a bold move to restore her back to her original glory. The work was completed in 2021, leaving her with a new layout and tasteful British Colonial styling while maintaining her elegant and traditional charm.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231624/image/large-813904a6aefca264c9b93d3b049a3fbb.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231624">“We used an interior designer from Istanbul and she came up with the right choice of colours and finishes from our perspective. The fabrics are all from well-known Italian manufacturers, but my favourite piece is the brown L-shaped antique leather suite in the lounge area!” said Ahmet Ongun.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263532/image/large-17996209cf3c9a93e12facebca0a6f74.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263532"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231631/image/large-642a9e73a47b82ccfe32330b9f2d53f1.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231631">Her interior layout was also changed to now accommodate an extra stateroom, consisting of two doubles and an owner’s suite. Each room meets the high-standards of guests with air conditioning and marble bathroom facilities. Restored to glory: The history of the 30m Captain Cook yacht with her owners

First touching the water in 1885, there are few wooden vessels still afloat with a lineage quite like the 40.58-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3860" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coronet40.54m (133'0&quot;)C&R Poillon1885">Coronet</a>. Built at the shipyard Cornelius &amp; Richard Poillon in Brooklyn, New York the schooner’s history is as varied and vibrant as any sailing yacht ever built, and she is now undergoing a major restoration following her sale to new owners in 2008. Over recent decades, great lengths have been taken to archive the yacht’s history, with Cynthia Goss publishing the Coronet Chronicle in 2005, a deep and well researched historical narrative, and the team behind her current rebuild at Mystic Seaport sharing regular updates on the yacht’s restoration in an online blog. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/270050/image/large-daf37f7d520d0b515ec24d9c76fcaa54.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/270050">Like many yacht’s of her age, over the century <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3860" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coronet40.54m (133'0&quot;)C&R Poillon1885">Coronet</a> has sparked a passion for classic yachts among many, and there have been an innumerable number of shipwrights and craftsmen who have turned their hand to bringing her back to life. Until only a few months ago, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3860" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coronet40.54m (133'0&quot;)C&R Poillon1885">Coronet</a> was undergoing work at the IYRS School of Technology &amp; Trades in Newport, Rhode Island, where she had been based in a state of advanced disrepair since the early 1995. The yacht was purchased by the school as a student project, providing students with invaluable hands-on experience in the restoration and maintenance of historic wooden vessels.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/270048/image/large-f89351657a45a33c3c3fbfe331d9d644.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/270048">The flagship of the IYRS, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3860" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coronet40.54m (133'0&quot;)C&R Poillon1885">Coronet</a> was being restored by the ancestors of many sailors who had actually worked aboard the yacht at some point during her 138 year history, and the rebuild was therefore intrinsically tied to the history of the local people. Unfortunately, very little of the yacht’s early history was known, and there was even speculation about who had originally designed her lines, not aided by the fact that she had been superficially amended over the century-plus that she had been afloat. With very little documentation surviving, researchers tracked down surviving members of the Poillon family, searched newspaper reports and eventually began to piece together the early history of the schooner. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/270049/image/large-93352f1e3ce9d71825e403aeebeeca6f.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/270049">According to their research, in 1884, Rufus T. Bush, President of Bush &amp; Denslow Manufacturing Company, NY, put forward a request for the design of a new schooner. C&amp;R Poillon was chosen as the builder, not least for its locality to the owner, but also for its history with the construction of famous schooners such as Montauk, Grayling and 1871 AC winner Sappho.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/270047/image/large-77c634eb105b54403411c22dc56a3f3a.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/270047">Over the coming months, designers across America put forward models for the yacht, and in February 1885, The New York Times announced that a hull had been chosen, with work shortly due to begin. Bush was already a yacht owner, owning the steam ship Falcon which had been built in Washington in 1880, Bush took a long time in selecting his hull, with the Falcon’s captain Christopher Crosby assisting him. It was the Smith &amp; Terry designers from Greenport who won the competition and a model exists of the original hull at The New York Yacht Club.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/277839/image/large-c8a630ff820e656bbf799cc372dcb44a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/277839">During her early years, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3860" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coronet40.54m (133'0&quot;)C&R Poillon1885">Coronet</a> collected many accolades, not least the famous 1887 victory over the schooner Dauntless in the Transatlantic Race which has given her a permanent position in the history books as one of the great American schooners. Her owner Rufus Bush had put forward a $10,000 prize, inviting any yacht owner to take the schooner on in a transatlantic race. The New York Times dedicated an entire first page to the event on March 28th 1887. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/270051/image/large-770fd5eb738e251dfcc7ae86cf2f1efb.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/270051">In November 2022, the schooner entered the next stage of her long life, arriving at the Henry B. du Pont Preservation Shipyard at Mystic Seaport Museum. The museum website announced the exciting plans for the restoration of the yacht, which is due to take place over the next three years. The reason for her rehoming after more than 25 years at the IYRS, is that the yacht was recently purchased by Crew, a New York-based company that specialises in historic vessel restoration. John passed away in 1915, and Nathanael Herreshoff took the helm, which led to the creation of the steel schooner Wildfire.Known as Project 891, Wildfire was constructed in 1922 and launched in 1923. Wildfire was commissioned by Charles L. The 1922 schooner received a new teak deck and interior renovations and in 1999 she was sold to a group of Asian businessmen, where she returned to Rio de Janeiro.However, due to a lack of maintenance care, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2065" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atrevida32.0m (104'12&quot;)Herreshoff1923">Atrevida</a> almost sank in Guanabara Bay and was neglected for almost two years, leading to holes and rust forming on her steel hull and superstructure. The wooden bowsprit was rebuilt in mahogany to the original Nathanael Herreshoff design.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271320/image/large-eb4eb9acd6a67c6551d179b9c05c24b8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271320">Her carbon steel davits had also been damaged over the years and were replaced with a new stainless steel set with handles and winches similar to her original design.
