ICON Yachts unveils 70m conversion superyacht Project Ufo

This time last year, Dutch shipyard ICON Yachts unveiled the 70-metre conversion superyacht Project Master. Today the shipyard has revealed its next conversion, the 70-metre conversion superyacht Project Ufo, which features exterior design from Murray & Associates and interiors from H2 Yacht Design.  Project Ufo yacht conversion by ICON YachtsThe conversion superyacht will feature true explorer capabilities, with a Polar C hull allowing her to cruise in polar waters, a 3,000 GT of interior volume, as well as helicopter pad and hangar on the guest deck able to accommodate a EC 145 helicopter and a submarine. In terms of interior spaces, she will be able to accommodate up to 18 guests for private operations, with dual master suites that open to each side and three VIP suites which can be converted into six staterooms with sliding dividing walls.Project Ufo yacht conversion by ICON YachtsProject Ufo yacht conversion by ICON YachtsOther top features include a 10-metre outdoor pool, a gym and spa area, a 12 seater Jacuzzi on the main deck, an expedition preparation room with a custom diving centre and a 4-metre transom. She will carry a 12-metre sportfisher, a 12-metre tender, a 6-metre landing craft, a wakeboard tender, a rescue tender and a full host of toys for on-water activities.Project Ufo yacht conversion by ICON YachtsThe latest project was born at last year's Monaco Yacht Show during a brain storming session between ICON the client. The meeting discussed the pros and potentials of conversions, and began to explore the idea of an explorer yacht that built on the earlier concepts of Espen Øino's Project Master. Aiming to build a family-style explorer with long range capabilities, ICON began to investigate potential conversion yachts around 60-75-metres. During this phase, a 66m Offshore Rescue and Support Vessel came into focus and after extensive research the shipyard confirmed it to be the favourite potential platform for this conversion project.

Onboard during the crossing, the future captain and further members of the owner’s team were able to convince themselves of the incredible capability and stability of the platform. The overall design and general arrangement is close to final and a full team are working closely on the project. The platform is currently safely berthed alongside the quay at ICON where the yard is engaged in the modification phase during which the sections and areas of the interior that are no longer required are being dismantled, ready for future construction.Project Ufo conversion yacht donor vesselPhoto: Guy FleuryIn September of last year the Dutch shipyard changed ownership, and was acquired by Swiss businessman, Micca Ferrero. Of the venture he commented at the time, “ICON Yachts is a highly specialised shipyard for yacht conversion and refit projects. It is a great honour to join such a strong team, constantly striving for Dutch excellence. Our new projects will also shape the future of yachting.”
