This time last year, Dutch shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ICON Yachts (Company)">ICON Yachts</a> unveiled the 70-metre conversion superyacht Project Master. Today the shipyard has revealed its next conversion, the 70-metre conversion superyacht Project Ufo, which features exterior design from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/252" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Murray & Associates L.L.C. (Company)">Murray &amp; Associates</a> and interiors from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/161" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H2 Yacht Design (Company)">H2 Yacht Design</a>. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243056/image/large-cdc3161124fd6b3e25abe32195e81620.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243056">The conversion superyacht will feature true explorer capabilities, with a Polar C hull allowing her to cruise in polar waters, a 3,000 GT of interior volume, as well as helicopter pad and hangar on the guest deck able to accommodate a EC 145 helicopter and a submarine. She will carry a 12-metre sportfisher, a 12-metre tender, a 6-metre landing craft, a wakeboard tender, a rescue tender and a full host of toys for on-water activities.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243057/image/large-ad2158380b6dc2884ebbeecb387c3af8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243057">The latest project was born at last year's <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2022">Monaco Yacht Show</a> during a brain storming session between <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ICON Yachts (Company)">ICON</a> the client. The meeting discussed the pros and potentials of conversions, and began to explore the idea of an explorer yacht that built on the earlier concepts of <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/companies/espen-oeino" target="_blank">Espen Øino</a>'s Project Master. Aiming to build a family-style explorer with long range capabilities, <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/companies/icon" target="_blank">ICON</a> began to investigate potential conversion yachts around 60-75-metres. During this phase, a 66m Offshore Rescue and Support Vessel came into focus and after extensive research the shipyard confirmed it to be the favourite potential platform for this conversion project.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243050/image/large-83deb6df07317c769deddb2bbebf5133.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243050"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243051/image/large-9ccd846e5ca18471d4fa160749d9887b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243051">After a series of in-depth pre-purchase surveys, analyses and inspections, and testing various general arrangements, the platform vessel arrived at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ICON Yachts (Company)">ICON Yachts</a> in Harlingen. Onboard during the crossing, the future captain and further members of the owner’s team were able to convince themselves of the incredible capability and stability of the platform. The overall design and general arrangement is close to final and a full team are working closely on the project. The platform is currently safely berthed alongside the quay at <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/companies/icon" target="_blank">ICON</a> where the yard is engaged in the modification phase during which the sections and areas of the interior that are no longer required are being dismantled, ready for future construction.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243048/image/large-8ed797f7bdf432e11fc3771ac7d81ba5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243048">In September of last year the Dutch shipyard changed ownership, and was acquired by Swiss businessman, Micca Ferrero. Moreover, the crew are housed across four double cabins situated below deck, while the captain has a cabin beside the wheelhouse.&nbsp;As for her exterior areas, the aft cockpit on the main deck boasts an eight-seater table, along with an expansive relaxation area, fitted with a C-shaped sofa and sunbathing area. By walking down the side stairways, guests arrive at the beach area that can double in size once the stern hatch lowers flush to the central section, thereby joining the indoor part of the beach club. Still presided over by the original founder Matjaž Murko today, the company now represents several brands of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> and operates across various Central and Eastern European countries, with a strong presence along the Adriatic coast.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/328602/image/large-f0b53309825f90cea989c7c504d55069.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/328602">What led to your entry into the yachting industry?I was born in Germany and moved to Slovenia in 1972 when I was ten years old. Shortly thereafter, I joined a well-known sailing club in Slovenia named Pirate. From a young age, I exhibited an entrepreneurial spirit; my first venture was founding a windsurfing school with a friend, catering to tourists on the beach. It's important to note the geographic significance of Slovenia, which is bordered by Italy to the west and Croatia to the south and east. Slovenia attracts many visitors from the Czech Republic and other Eastern European countries. Additionally, our linguistic similarities foster a welcoming environment for these tourists.This early experience further fueled my interest in the nautical industry, which prompted me to explore additional opportunities. My breakthrough came at the Genoa Boat Show in 1994, where I discovered the Pershing brand. Just a few months later, I signed a contract with the shipyard and acquired two yachts, a 60-footer and a 70-footer and began actively promoting Pershing in the Adriatic.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/328599/image/large-fe3e86a9dd94651ebd8b14f1582ea966.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/328599">Could you elaborate on your close ties with various Ferretti Group brands and how it came to be that you represented them?In 1998, following <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/584" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pershing S.p.a. (Company)">Pershing</a>'s acquisition by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a>, Pershing recommended us as a dealer for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> brands in Austria, Slovenia, and other parts of Europe. We promptly signed the contract and officially started our dealership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti</a> in 2000. Our markets include Austria, Germany (specifically clients in the Adriatic region for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/361" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Yachts (Company)">Ferretti Yachts</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/584" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pershing S.p.a. (Company)">Pershing</a>, and Itama), the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Albania. Over the past twenty years, these countries have seen economic development, though they still face certain challenges. Despite our wide geographic reach, we encounter specific local preferences. In Hungary for example, there is a strong preference for conducting business in Hungarian. As a result we maintain an office in Budapest to accommodate this need, despite its landlocked location. We also have an office in Prague, Czech Republic, and one in Belgrade, Serbia. When operations began, back in 1994, sourcing essential components such as generator impellers posed significant challenges. Damage to an impeller could disable the entire generator, disrupting critical onboard functions, including cooking, yet obtaining these components was complicated by supply distribution issues. Indeed, Slovenia and Croatia were not part of the European Union at that time, leading to intricate customs and logistics scenarios.To address these challenges, we significantly expanded our service network, which now covers all major marinas and key cruising locations along the Adriatic coast. Thanks to our local network and expertise, we are known for our rapid response times, a fact acknowledged by our clients and competitors alike.Our team comprises highly experienced professionals, some of whom have been with us for 15-20 years. With the increasing complexity of yachts due to advanced technology and design features, it is imperative to stay at the forefront of service excellence. The growth of our fleet has outpaced our staffing capabilities, highlighting the critical need to balance the number of yachts with employee recruitment to enhance our operations.Moreover, we have been improving our technological capabilities by investing in software programs that aim to more efficiently understand the yachts clients desire. This will better facilitate our sales strategies and improve our ability to track client inquiries and preferences. For instance, if a client expressed interest in a specific type of superyacht a year ago, these new systems will allow us to process that information more quickly and accurately. We have a dedicated team, much like a family, where each member, including my son, plays a crucial role. Together, we are committed to continuing our legacy for many more years to come.
