The Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss) was granted consultative status by the members of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) during the recent IMO General Assembly.
“Achieving consultative status was the final step in a two-year process for IMO to recognise SYBAss as the representative body of the leading superyacht builders within the marine industry,” says Theo Hooning, secretary general of SYBAss. “The superyacht industry at large now has a dedicated voice at the highest regulatory level.” The IMO consultative status grants SYBAss the possibility to directly participate in the work of IMO, which focuses on regulations to improve safety and security at sea and to prevent marine pollution.
In anticipation of the consultative status, SYBAss has already been actively contributing to the work of IMO. This included substantial involvement in the work of the IMO Sub- Committee on Stability and Load lines and on Fishing Vessels. The results of three SYBAss yacht analyses were submitted, looking at the effects of the forthcoming second generation intact stability requirements on superyachts.
