Mike has vast experience guiding vessels throughout the many cruising regions of Indonesia. As with our previous Raja Ampat and Komodo articles, this piece highlights the top attractions in the area and provides valuable information that should be considered before beginning any trip to the area.Top Activities in Cenderawasih Bay<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/146700/image/large-d1c588c5040604fa4a7c3abd793e1fa6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/146700">Indonesia is fast becoming a star attraction for yachts visiting South East Asia, with internationally known destinations such as Raja Ampat and Komodo National Park providing the signature cruising grounds in the area. However, as Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world, with over 17,000 islands stretching across almost 5,000 kilometres of ocean, there are many other cruising areas throughout the country still waiting to be explored. The newest “hot spot” to receive international attention, is a large body of water on the northwest coast of New Guinea called Cenderawasih Bay, which translates to “Bird of Paradise Bay” in the Indonesian language.With an airport on the island of Biak located at the northern end of the bay, conveniently accessible by jet from Honolulu Hawaii, this region is well situated as an add on destination to a Raja Ampat trip, as well as a potential entry or departure point for a yacht’s timeframe in Indonesia. Perfectly formed with the mainland of Papua on three sides, with protection from the islands of Yapen and Biak on the northern end of the bay, the sea conditions are relatively mild all year round. At over 30,000 km2 in size with around 15,000 km2 as a designated marine national park, there are a plethora of activities to be enjoyed as well as ample “unknown” areas waiting to be explored.Here are some of the top activities to be experienced in Cenderawasih Bay:1. Whaleshark Interactions<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/146701/image/large-b45434c04d5ecdbaccd8967c1028eae5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/146701">The phenomenon that introduced Cenderawasih Bay to the world, and one of the most unique marine interaction experiences to be found anywhere, is the opportunity to swim with giant whalesharks in calm and easy conditions. A series of traditional drop net fishing boats called “bagans” have a permanent presence in the bay and over the years divers and photographers have discovered a very special relationship between these fishermen and the whalesharks. The bagan fishermen use bright lights at night to attract baitfish and scoop them up for sale at local markets. However, it’s not just humans that eat these baitfish; the whalesharks have learned that the fish that accumulate on the bottom of the net quickly become “fish mush”, a free and easy meal, all the whalesharks need to do is suck on the net! The whalesharks hang around the vicinity of the bagans as long as there is food in the water, and yachts can work with the fishermen to purchase a supply of fish to feed the whalesharks throughout the day. Divers and snorkelers can spend days frolicking with these giant fish (up to 8 or more metres in length) at almost any time of year, with the exception of a few days surrounding the full moon each month. The feeling of swimming next to one of these leviathans is an awe-inspiring experience and should be on the top of any marine enthusiasts “to do” list.2. Explore Remnants of World War Two<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/146702/image/large-04bb81874d5f0d10a1b370daf8b370e8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/146702">Major parts of a battle between the Americans and the Japanese took place in northern New Guinea with several major encounters in the Cendrawasih Bay area. Biak Island was a Japanese stronghold and was continually bombed by the Americans in an effort to force them to surrender the important airbase. Thousands of casualties were suffered on both sides in this horrific conflict and the local people still remember it today. With such a rich history of war in the area, there are many remnants left over and these can be an attraction for war buffs. Biak is home to a Japanese War Memorial to the thousands of soldiers who were killed, as well as an interesting tour to the caves that they hid in while the Americans bombarded the island with artillery. The bay is home to a selection of wrecks of several varieties: P38 planes in shallow depths near Mioswaar and a Zero fighter near Roon, a series of different plane wrecks in the shallow reefs of Numfor, a Catalina flying boat wreck near Biak harbour and several large shipwrecks in the harbour of Manokwari. With the right permits, these wrecks are accessible to divers. Visiting these sites is an eye opener as they bestow a feeling of wonder about how such a peaceful area in the present was the site of so much warfare less than seventy five years ago.3. Relax on Deserted White Sandy Beaches<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/146703/image/large-a8dfa3b0d4106ec3ee8c7eb4d9800217.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/146703">With hundreds of deserted white sand beaches spread across a string of islands in this sparsely populated area, an enterprising yacht could set up a beach party on a different island each day for weeks at a time. The stereotypical “postcard photo” of a small island with pure white sand surrounded by green jungle could easily have been taken in Cenderawasih Bay. Dozens of small, uninhabited islands dot the landscape surrounded by healthy hard coral reefs beckoning offshore. For the ultimate “beach day” there are not many areas in the world that can compete with Cenderawasih Bay. A word to the wise: it’s important to politely seek permission from any nearby villages and to offer gifts and school supplies before visiting any beaches in their neighbourhood.4. Visit Villages for a Glimpse of Traditional Life<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/146704/image/large-7f635278d07f64d895b520884f9652c7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/146704">With a population numbering around 20,000 people (excluding the cities of Biak, Manokwari and Nabire) Cenderawasih Bay is mainly untouched by human habitation. Despite a general lack of large settlements, many small villages are present in the area and several are very welcoming to outsiders. One of the best villages to visit is on the island of Roon, home to the oldest Christian church in the area as well as a small waterfall and friendly locals. This is one of the best villages to get a glimpse of how Papuan people live on a daily basis, with the church and school playing a dominant role. For a great view and photo opportunity, hike to the viewpoint high above the town and look out over the green and aqua coloured bay. Some villages in the area are more apprehensive of outsiders than others, making it imperative to have a local guide from the yacht approach the village chief to ask permission before any groups go ashore.5. Day Tours to Find the Legendary Birds of Paradise<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/146705/image/large-76a81da7ac4bf764dc596065403502a8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/146705">As the name Cenderawasih alludes, this area is home to many of the 41 species of “Bird of Paradise” currently recognized. A prized sighting amongst serious birders, all species of Bird of Paradise are characterized by vibrant colours and an incredible mating dance. Found deep within the forests of New Guinea and her surrounding islands and nowhere else on Earth, encountering these birds is a once in a lifetime opportunity. There are several ways of seeing these birds while visiting Indonesian Papua, one of which is taking part in a day tour from Manokwari into the Arafak mountain rainforests. An early start is required for observing these colourful birds, as they perform their mating dances not long after the sun rises. Last year saw the return of the extraordinary 1902 three-masted yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2266" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shenandoah of Sark55.08m (180'9&quot;)Townsend & Downey1902">Shenandoah of Sark</a>, which is 55.08-metres long and belonged to Baron Bich, who used it as his flagship to attend the regattas when he was competing in America’s Cup.”He continues: “Saint-Tropez is the only place in France where you can see the futuristic Wally yachts in action. Another example, we were privileged to see the cutting-edge maxi Flying Nikka, a 19-metre articulated foiler built by an Italian team and designed to exceed 40 knots at top speed.”Superyacht Challenge Antigua (March 2024) Serving as a welcome kick-off to the regatta season each year is the Superyacht Challenge Antigua. Held annually in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nelson’s Dockyard, the race begins and ends just off English Harbour and is made up of daily pursuit races, as well as an optional race around the island.Famous for its laid-back atmosphere, those competing in the Superyacht Challenge Antigua are divided into three classes (buccaneers, corsairs and privateers) and are awarded Caribbean barrels of rum for their successes. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219539/image/large-eda4015f563d6bef20bdd258c92d9401.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219539">The Superyacht Challenge Antigua is the perfect event for racing newbies, as Co-founder Paul Deeth explains: “You will find great racing in a relaxed and friendly setting which is ideal for owners experiencing superyacht racing for the first time. We offer a superyacht ‘classic’ class, which means yachts can race with their standard sails and do not need a lot of extra crew, which helps to keep the pressure off.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/199" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="St. Barths Bucket Regatta - 2024">St Barths Bucket Regatta</a>&nbsp;(March 2024)&nbsp;Distinctive for its sheer number of superyacht entries, the regatta calendar would not be complete without mention of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/199" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="St. Barths Bucket Regatta - 2024">St Barths Bucket</a>, which sees as many as 35 superyachts of all shapes and sizes descending on the Caribbean island to enjoy nail-biting racing in a beautifully picturesque setting.The Bucket is also known for its top-notch social programme, with six of the 31 entries this year being social ones, in which yacht owners and guests can make the most of the recreational aspects of the Bucket without racing – whether that is the Bucket’s shoreside parties, spectacular local beaches or world-renowned shopping and restaurants.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/283379/image/large-c1d8a0d7d9c638a74da544c6b067a788.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/283379">Due to its popularity, it is worth planning your travels to the Bucket well ahead of time, as Peter Craig, Event Director and Race Chairman highlights: “Whether you are racing or race viewing, you need to plan well in advance. Our local businesses claim that ‘Bucket Week’ is the busiest of the year – and that includes Christmas and New Year, so it is important to be very organised when booking accommodation.”Les Voiles de St Barth Richard Mille (April 2024) Despite being a relatively new addition to the racing scene, Les Voiles de St Barth Richard Mille is on the bucket list of many seasoned sailors, thanks to its blend of intense island racing and incredible scenery with a fantastic après sailing atmosphere. Come for the racing, stay for the nightlife, as event organiser and co-founder François Tolède explains: “Every evening the race village vibrates with incredible concerts and projections of the day's races on a massive screen. On a visit to the Old Town, be prepared to emerge into a UNESCO World Heritage postcard-perfect settlement. The walled Mediaeval city is a maze of shiny-stone paths and steps branching off the spine of the main street like a fishbone. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/185177/image/large-ed4aca4e5cf901ddb64e00a84c5d3ff2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/185177">The MaldivesThe Maldives is an archipelagic nation that stretches across 42,000 square miles. Situated in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives boasts a year-round summer climate, endless stretches of pristine coastline and tropical, turquoise waters. An off-the-beaten-path alternative to saturated winter cruising hotspots in the Caribbean, the Maldives is emerging as an Asian superyachting treasure trove. Josh Francis, charter broker at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TJB Super Yachts (Company)">TJB</a>, set the scene: “As a cruising destination, the Maldives offers an experience different to anywhere else on earth. The countless islands, sandbanks and shallow waters give a deep sense of serenity and the region now has good quality of charter yachts to explore the finest of the Indian Ocean.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280915/image/large-977ec9167eeb95076328e6af8bcd4b2d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280915">Things to do:The beaches in the Maldives rank as some of the very best in the world: “The white sandy beaches are endless, the water is pristine and warm,” Josh Francis told SuperYacht Times. The island of Dhiffushi is home to untouched beaches, providing stellar snorkelling and swimming spots. Here, the sand is a dazzling shade of white, contrasting the rich greenery on land.&nbsp;“I would recommend anyone to get PADI certified before travelling, as scuba diving in the Maldives is some of the world’s best,” commented Josh Francis. The country’s various lagoons and Protected Marine Areas are famed for having some of the world’s best snorkelling sites overflowing with sea life. Whether diving in the shallows or further deep, Francis highlighted the diversity of the diving environments, “Just a few metres below the surface are reef sharks, turtles and stingrays, including mantas, and a collection of interesting shipwrecks - so don your wetsuits!"<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/183857/image/large-51755852a2c682d29cffce01a1c06edf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/183857">The Leeward IslandsThe Leeward Islands are a classic Caribbean cruising ground, and it is no wonder that so many superyachts can be found there during the winter season. This glorious collection of islands is situated in the northeastern part of the Caribbean Sea, and is home to a bounty of superyachting hotspots, from St Barths to Anguilla and Antigua.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/188253/image/large-457af837354f4786dcf71ab6eddc96bf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/188253">Things to do:Those seeking a lively onshore atmosphere should head to the swanky and stylish St Barths. Debra Blackburn, charter broker at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser Yachts</a> told SYT “Visiting St. Barths feels as if you’ve stopped at the St. Tropez of the Caribbean. One of the most popular islands of the French West Indies, St Barths oozes a luxury feel that can be experienced in its lavish resorts and glistening bars and eateries. She continued, “Time spent here is filled with amazing dining, world-class shopping and nightlife to rival the best of the South of France.”Further west is the British Virgin Islands, comprising over 60 islands and cays waiting to be explored. Adding to the island’s menacing feel are the many abandoned sites and ruins that make up its intriguing history. Whalers Bay, once a bustling hub at the height of the whaling industry, is today the ruinous final resting place of some of Antarctica’s most significant whaling artefacts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/269870/image/large-a7e0370f505d2fa8b67abae0e2164450.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/269870">Though most of Antarctica is isolated, the Vernadsky Research Centre has a strong life force. Step by step, he worked his way up to 30, 40 and, now, a 54-metre yacht. “My goal has always been to become a captain on an amazing yacht. That’s exactly what I am doing now and I couldn’t be happier about it!” he said with a prominent grin. He said, ‘can we really go to Alaska?’ We then crossed the Panama Canal, went up to California for some maintenance and began to make our way up to Alaska,” Paolo recalled. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="El Leon54.0m (177'2&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2018">El Leon</a>’s itinerary to Alaska began in British Columbia where they did 1,800 nautical miles of coastline, exploring each nook and cranny along the way. “We saw everything! Killer whales, bears on the shoreline, small icebergs floating in the sea and so much beautiful landscape. It was incredibly special to think that this is a place that so few people, and superyachts visit.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224027/image/large-782b97f316fa190fbbc7f4d127dc691a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224027">After experiencing the Alaskan cold – even during the summer – <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="El Leon54.0m (177'2&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2018">El Leon</a> made her way back down south to Baja California in Mexico. When asked what one of the peak moments of this world tour has been thus far, Captain Paolo Bozzo Costa replied, “In Baja California, you can see probably the most beautiful sunset in the world. I’ve never seen one so beautiful.” Having sailed all around the world at this point, he can certainly be considered an authority on identifying the world’s best sunsets.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224038/image/large-80aebc769fcec0dbe148f9cb1ad407d6.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224038">Having explored the incredible coastlines of the Caribbean, Mexico, the United States and Canada, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="El Leon54.0m (177'2&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2018">El Leon</a>’s owner once again asked Paolo, “Where can we go next?” It was at this point that crossing the Pacific, though a mighty feat, seemed like the natural next challenge. Though a Mangusta yacht had never done a Pacific ocean crossing, Captain Paolo Bozzo Costa knew that the vessel was more than capable so long as they managed the weather forecast. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224034/image/large-d95b2e97fcaa77ccf8a0599352c3f28b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224034">From here, they stopped in the Galapagos which due to its highly protective environmental regulations, required the extensive cleaning of the yacht and a close inspection of the vessel by local authorities to ensure she was cleared to cruise in these famously biodiverse islands. With more crystal clear waters on their minds, they crossed the Pacific to French Polynesia. With the world tour progressing swimmingly, March 2020 hit and the pandemic threw a bit of a wrench into these ambitious plans.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224037/image/large-528d7b589966893f4f46e36f2e01aac7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224037">“<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="El Leon54.0m (177'2&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2018">El Leon</a>’s owner was able to fly to French Polynesia and we began our itinerary. After 10 days, we were contacted by local authorities and instructed to drop anchor because French Polynesia was also going into lockdown. We stayed here for 45 days until the lockdown there was lifted and we were able to resume our travels there”. They then made their way to Bora Bora, which Captain Paolo Bozzo Costa described as “ominous” and a “strange experience” because of how trafficked it usually is by tourists. Then it was on to Fiji and Australia where they completed a shipyard visit, and of course more travels on the Gold Coast before heading to Bali.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224039/image/large-81133d5d98145fcf9ea6c458d35faf7a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224039"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="El Leon54.0m (177'2&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2018">El Leon</a> spent a majority of 2020 in Bali, and completed countless miles with one particular trip totalling more than 3,000 nautical miles. “We were pulling 300 miles some days, which was tiring for the owner but in the end he was super happy. We went to places like Raja Ampat which has unimaginably blue toned waters and incredible wildlife like white tip sharks and many different species of fish,” he recalled. In the Med, we will go for some maintenance in Cyprus for a few months before continuing our travels. In May 2023, we will visit Turkey and Greece.
