8 March marks International Women’s Day, we take a look back at some of the inspiring women in the industry who have been presented with awards.

Kicking off between 8 and 12 May 2025 in Göcek, Fethiye, the inaugural <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/284" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Show Türkiye - 2025">Superyacht Show Türkiye</a> 2025 is set to make a name for itself amongst international boat shows worldwide. SuperYacht Times Features Writer Emma Dailey sat down with the makers behind this unmissable four-day event to learn how they are strengthening the Turkish yachting sector and breaking the boat show mould.&nbsp;At the show, visitors will be able to peruse a display of traditional Turkish wooden gullets as well as state-of-the-art builds. Additionally, participating companies are set to showcase their forward-thinking concepts and international yacht debuts, while key speakers share their insights into the latest industry trends.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/352767/image/large-8d773b044a528ee95fe953c2425037c1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/352767">Despite its coastal positioning, large-scale maritime fairs are a rare sight in Göcek, as many boat shows flock to the densely populated Istanbul instead. Even so, the often overlooked Göcek is a crucial spot on many yacht travel routes, boasting an impressive seven full-equipped marinas in total. Owner Mehmet Kabak has even bigger aspirations for the region’s future, explaining “our goal is to organise three sectoral events annually in this region, including the boat show.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/352770/image/large-2bbf92f452a80827f926ba0bf8d20d1c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/352770">Why the Superyacht Show Türkiye 2025?One of the most standout aspects of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/284" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Show Türkiye - 2025">Superyacht Show Türkiye</a> is the location named in its title. “According to recent reports,” Kabak said, “Turkey ranks second in the world in yacht production. We have a significant number of shipyards offering specialised productions and various options, as well as the potential to provide all technical support.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/352774/image/large-203250c14a5beff5fefc0f188afbe653.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/352774">“We believe that the production power of Turkey has not been adequately emphasised in fairs held within the country, and international participation is often lower than expected. Göcek offers us a unique advantage in this regard,” Kabak continued.Not only that, but the bustling yacht tourism present in the region perfectly complements the entertainment activities and evening mixer events set to occur over the four days, creating an ideal springboard for networking with yachting enthusiasts and experts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/352771/image/large-741934102d901c445e78a009e692b9bb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/352771">Broadening Turkish horizons “Türkiye is almost a peninsula, and while maritime culture was initially prevalent in coastal cities, it has recently spread to inland areas as well,” Kabak explained. In the past five years especially, the country has seen a breakthrough, as increases in their logistical capabilities have “placed us very close to key countries in yacht production, such as Italy and the Netherlands,” Kabak said.&nbsp;More and more yacht manufacturers are branching into refit operations on a daily basis, while many refit firms are taking initiative to full-scale production, making it a destination for every stage of the vessel’s life cycle and global player in yachting. “We can also observe that Turkish companies have achieved significant sales figures in the global market,” Kabak added. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/352768/image/large-ab93eeeef39e15eeef17378be2f94fa7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/352768">Keeping up with the latest trendsAs a brand new event, much of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/284" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Show Türkiye - 2025">Superyacht Show Türkiye</a>’s exhibitions will centre around relevant and popular topics in the yachting industry. One such subject is that of sustainability, as the show will address eco-friendly yacht designs and technology that strive to reduce environmental footprints. There will also be a special focus on the growing demand for custom-build yachts, exploring the industry’s shift to pioneering personalisation.“Another trend is the integration of advanced technologies, such as smart connectivity and AI-driven navigation systems, which enhance both the performance and the overall experience of yachting. Furthermore, the rise of experiential travel has led to a greater emphasis on creating unique and immersive experiences for yacht owners and charter clients. According to the designer, the GWP-345’s design takes inspiration from the “engineering prowess" showcased in the 67-metre iconic Blue Riband record holder, Destriero.&nbsp;The vessel Destriero made a name for herself in 1992 when she crossed New York to the British Isles of Scilly in a time of 58 hours, 34 minutes and 50 seconds, breaking the world record.&nbsp;A previous collaboration between <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2049" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ghost Yachts (Company)">Ghost Yachts</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6563" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alexander McDiarmid Design (Company)">McDiarmid</a>, a British, France-based designer, was the 80-metre G250 yacht presented last year. Similarly to her predecessor, the GWP-345 concept exhibits a V-shaped, wave-cutting hull paired with a reverse bow, except on a larger platform. By building on the Ghost G250 platform, we've explored options for a more efficient high-speed propulsion solution while enhancing circularity and sustainability,” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6563" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alexander McDiarmid Design (Company)">McDiarmid</a> explained.&nbsp;From the outside, the yacht’s exterior silhouette emulates the military-style appearance present in the modern naval frigate and wardship designs, particularly as the sturdy superstructure has been simplified into angled surfaces.With a beam of 16.7-metres, the superyacht has the capacity to host as many as 12 guests across five VIP double staterooms, while the full-beam owner’s suite is complete with balconies both to port and starboard for immersion with the outdoor environment.&nbsp;One of the GWP-345’s interior highlights is her saloon with port and starboard, full-height glazing, along with an aft running the full length into the midships dining area. In a unique feature, the technical ‘art’ construction is visible to guests from the aft saloon area, as some of the superstructure and ventilation shafts are positioned within part of this glazing.&nbsp;When it comes to alfresco entertainment, relaxation can be had in the sunken and hidden foredeck cockpit. In addition, the sundeck can be accessed via three stairways, while a motorised semi-rigid sun canopy offers shade from the sun.Furthermore, the foredeck tender garage has the possibility to house two 10-metre tenders via a knuckle beam, while there is also a heliport for an Airbus Helicopter AH145, AH160 helicopters or an equivalent OEM size. The team found that of 32,000 crew members, including those currently employed and those seeking work, only 28 percent were women and more shockingly, only 2.1 percent of captains were female.“My biggest challenge was gaining confidence in my decisions, and finding my command voice,” explained Captain Maiwenn Beadle. “Women are often criticised for taking command of a situation, leading the organisation and being confident. There is a very obvious gender imbalance across all roles, with senior roles facing similar issues. I didn't even know that there was a maritime school for people like me who did not graduate high school, until I heard about Maritime Professional Training in Fort Lauderdale.”&nbsp;Over the years, Captain Sandy Yawn has worked hard to prove her worth in a male-dominated industry. “In the past I was turned down for a new-build because the owner was from another country and didn't think a woman could be in command. That one made me laugh out loud! He put his arm around me, swooped his other across the harbour in St. Thomas and said, ‘Annie, do you think all those guys on that boat went to Detroit Diesel School? On top of that English was not my first language so I worked hard as both a woman and a Latina to set up my business.”&nbsp;Monaco-based resident Marcela de Kern Royer combines a passion for yachting with a strong international academic background, along with her past experiences in asset management. She has gained excellent exposure to all facets of the industry, starting as a supplier and having experience in new-build, refit, brokerage, and yacht management.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260761/image/large-822c6f306d21c5327096e1c7bed8f814.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260761">“I was inspired by the role models of my parents as both of them were entrepreneurs and very successful business people. I had to work through the career ladder to get to where I am today. Being a woman in this industry turned out to not only be my strength, but my superpower and because of that I am grateful to all my previous bosses, who were men.
