During interviews journalists always turn to yacht designers and ask them to define their style, and it is true that many designers have an aesthetic that consistently occurs in their work. For many it is that unique style that owner’s turn to, but for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Cristiano Gatto Design</a>, it is not a style that remains consistent, but an approach to design that allows the team to create truly bespoke and beautiful superyachts. We recently caught up with Cristiano to find out a little more about that unique methodology that has led him to the creation of &nbsp;more than 200 superyachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227248/image/large-848494a0d0d564659e8036e1d8e0b4a1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227248">Pitching himself and his studio as artisans with artistic backgrounds that use their capacity and knowledge to create unique yachts that are as unique as the owner’s themselves. “I never say to a client ‘buy my style, buy my methods,’ because we have worked on a myriad of superyachts in an array of unique and diverse styles over the years that reflect the owner’s wishes.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227246/image/large-c762286e638a0bc3cc07c4774fbdb901.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227246">All <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Gatto</a>’s yachts are created using the same employment of old school processes, honed over 29 years in the industry. When a client first approaches the studio, the first thing to understand is what has provoked this decision to build or refit a yacht. Understanding the dream behind the decision allows the designers to channel that energy into the finished product, and it is something they continue to return to throughout the design process. “We are translators from dream to reality and we use our design language to do that in the most accurate way possible.” Every superyacht begins with a list of wishes, not only for the yacht herself because many owner’s don’t yet know what kind of yacht they want, but of the life that will be lived aboard the yacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227244/image/large-4780c2dd6a4a6f9268818365ff101796.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227244">“All of that dialogue helps us to build up an initial picture. We get everything onto paper and then join the dots – within those dots is the first iteration of the yacht and we work on that until we can envisage the final pictures.” While we would assume that yacht design always begins with the exterior lines of a vessel, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Gatto</a>’s studio can begin from single rooms, even single pieces of key furniture that are pivotal to the owner’s wishes, and from there the formation of the vessel can take root.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227242/image/large-37df87d04489085960fd97a3fd27522a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227242">This is so pivotal to the studio’s methods in fact that during the initial presentation of the design, the designers also introduce the key materials. “Everything needs to be connected, what you see, feel, smell, it all needs to be aligned and if owner’s are presented with an entire finish, it gives them a better understanding of the overall impact – senses are everything.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227243/image/large-01fdadcc638c2c7548dd43b6657ad1b0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227243">Once those initial designs are consolidated, the process moves to the second step which is translated in the technical drawings. Here the engineer in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Gatto</a> comes out, as he and his team employ a thorough R&amp;D process to understand the mechanisms behind the various concepts they’ve envisaged. “The interiors are not just what you see the first time you step aboard the yacht, it is what you will see over the next 5-10 years, so if we have designed something where the materials don’t correlate with the mechanics, it won’t last.”When it comes to refit, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Gatto</a>’s approach is much the same, though now owner’s can have even more trouble when it comes to a redesign because it's hard to envisage a complete yacht as a blank canvas. In this case, the team visits yachts with the owners and works out what they like or dislike about them. “Budget is always a major factor in refitting because it can be the limitation to the level of transformation.” Often the design team will reimagine existing pieces of furniture and reincorporate them into the design in a totally different way that not only saves money, but also time and the destruction of often perfectly good objects and materials.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/23624/image/large-45b8788dcba9e39c6591a40a23f05fd8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23624">Despite not having a consistent ‘style’ you can spot a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Cristiano Gatto Design</a> yacht because of the details of construction that few other designers would implement. “One owner called me shortly after we delivered their yacht, and he said ‘I am lying in bed and am getting so much joy from the details of the ceiling moulding that we never discussed and I would only notice from this exact place in bed. I know that you created that especially for me, so thank you’.” For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Gatto</a>, this epitomises the approach the studio takes. By truly getting to know an owner, you are able to gather information and make informed decisions about what they will take joy from, even in the tiny details.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/23621/image/large-513b3acb079434c7aa8a5281c47dfc94.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23621">“One of the best moments is when you see a client step aboard the yacht for the first time and they are surprised by the final effect. That demonstrates the richness of the finish and the detail of the design because they’ve seen the 3D renders, they’ve seen the materials, but only the designer truly understands how they will come together – that surprise is everything.”

The Saudi Red Sea Authority has introduced Saudi Arabia’s first regulation governing yacht activities within its territorial waters.

In their most recent financial disclosure, the Board of Directors of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> examined and approved the consolidated half-year financial report as of 30 June 2024.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/320979/image/large-649a94dae16898ab9df849136057ab5a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/320979">Summary<ul><li>In the first half of 2024, net revenues from new yacht sales, identified as 'Net Revenues New Yachts,' amounted to €415.1 million, a 6.9% increase from €388.4 million during the same period in 2023. The breakdown by region indicates varied performance: revenues in the Americas grew by 9.2%, while the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region saw an increase of 20.9%. The Middle East and Africa (MEA) region recorded a significant rise of 142.0%. In contrast, Europe registered a decline of 9.9%. </li><li>EBITDA reached €74.2 million, marking a 9.7% increase from €67.7 million in the first half of 2023. This resulted in an EBITDA margin of 17.9% on Net Revenues from New Yachts, an improvement of 50 basis points. </li><li>EBIT stood at €58.0 million, reflecting a 9.1% increase from €53.1 million in the first half of 2023. This corresponds to a 14% margin on Net Revenues from New Yachts, which is an increase of 30 basis points. </li><li>Group Net Profit reached €43.6 million, an increase of 11.6% compared to €39.0 million in the first half of 2023. This resulted in a net profit margin of 10.5% on Net Revenues from New Yachts, up by 40 basis points. </li><li>Organic Net Capex was reported at €20.5 million, accounting for 4.9% of Net Revenues from New Yachts, with approximately 90% allocated to expanding industrial capacity and developing new models and product lines. Additionally, net investments tied to the consolidation of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1011" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Simpson Marine (Company)">Simpson Marine</a> Group totaled €12.6 million, resulting in a Total Net Capex of €33.1 million for the period. </li><li>The Net Cash Position stood at €102.2 million, following a dividend payout of €34.3 million in the second quarter. Moreover, the crew are housed across four double cabins situated below deck, while the captain has a cabin beside the wheelhouse.&nbsp;As for her exterior areas, the aft cockpit on the main deck boasts an eight-seater table, along with an expansive relaxation area, fitted with a C-shaped sofa and sunbathing area. By walking down the side stairways, guests arrive at the beach area that can double in size once the stern hatch lowers flush to the central section, thereby joining the indoor part of the beach club. The offer envelopes were opened on Monday, 16 September, in Rovigo at the office of accountant Maria Clotilde Castellani, a judicial commissioner appointed by Judge Benedetta Barbera of the Rovigo Court.President Luca Zaia of the Veneto Region expressed satisfaction with the recent developments, stating, “This marks the closure of an important phase in the process, which has involved concerted efforts with social partners and the management overseeing this procedure. Initially, there was little optimism. However, we now see promising potential in the new industrial proposal. As outlined during the regional discussions, this proposal plans for a complete break from previous management practices, aims to enhance productivity, and presents an ambitious strategy for the company's revival. This includes retaining the current workforce of 48 employees and further expanding their numbers and skills,” stated President Zaia.“However, it should be noted that the process is not yet complete,” continued President Zaia. “In the coming days, the creditors will need to cast a favourable vote on the compensation proposal, which promises much greater satisfaction than in the event of bankruptcy. The Region has provided technical assistance and training courses to support this transition phase. The current temporary management has performed optimally thus far and must continue to ensure production continuity until the transition to the new company, whose structure is still being defined.”

Rolls Royce and the Azimut Benetti Group have established a partnership under a four-year framework agreement.
