During interviews journalists always turn to yacht designers and ask them to define their style, and it is true that many designers have an aesthetic that consistently occurs in their work. For many it is that unique style that owner’s turn to, but for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Cristiano Gatto Design</a>, it is not a style that remains consistent, but an approach to design that allows the team to create truly bespoke and beautiful superyachts. We recently caught up with Cristiano to find out a little more about that unique methodology that has led him to the creation of &nbsp;more than 200 superyachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227248/image/large-848494a0d0d564659e8036e1d8e0b4a1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227248">Pitching himself and his studio as artisans with artistic backgrounds that use their capacity and knowledge to create unique yachts that are as unique as the owner’s themselves. “I never say to a client ‘buy my style, buy my methods,’ because we have worked on a myriad of superyachts in an array of unique and diverse styles over the years that reflect the owner’s wishes.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227246/image/large-c762286e638a0bc3cc07c4774fbdb901.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227246">All <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Gatto</a>’s yachts are created using the same employment of old school processes, honed over 29 years in the industry. When a client first approaches the studio, the first thing to understand is what has provoked this decision to build or refit a yacht. Understanding the dream behind the decision allows the designers to channel that energy into the finished product, and it is something they continue to return to throughout the design process. “We are translators from dream to reality and we use our design language to do that in the most accurate way possible.” Every superyacht begins with a list of wishes, not only for the yacht herself because many owner’s don’t yet know what kind of yacht they want, but of the life that will be lived aboard the yacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227244/image/large-4780c2dd6a4a6f9268818365ff101796.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227244">“All of that dialogue helps us to build up an initial picture. We get everything onto paper and then join the dots – within those dots is the first iteration of the yacht and we work on that until we can envisage the final pictures.” While we would assume that yacht design always begins with the exterior lines of a vessel, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Gatto</a>’s studio can begin from single rooms, even single pieces of key furniture that are pivotal to the owner’s wishes, and from there the formation of the vessel can take root.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227242/image/large-37df87d04489085960fd97a3fd27522a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227242">This is so pivotal to the studio’s methods in fact that during the initial presentation of the design, the designers also introduce the key materials. “Everything needs to be connected, what you see, feel, smell, it all needs to be aligned and if owner’s are presented with an entire finish, it gives them a better understanding of the overall impact – senses are everything.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227243/image/large-01fdadcc638c2c7548dd43b6657ad1b0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227243">Once those initial designs are consolidated, the process moves to the second step which is translated in the technical drawings. Here the engineer in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Gatto</a> comes out, as he and his team employ a thorough R&amp;D process to understand the mechanisms behind the various concepts they’ve envisaged. “The interiors are not just what you see the first time you step aboard the yacht, it is what you will see over the next 5-10 years, so if we have designed something where the materials don’t correlate with the mechanics, it won’t last.”When it comes to refit, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Gatto</a>’s approach is much the same, though now owner’s can have even more trouble when it comes to a redesign because it's hard to envisage a complete yacht as a blank canvas. In this case, the team visits yachts with the owners and works out what they like or dislike about them. “Budget is always a major factor in refitting because it can be the limitation to the level of transformation.” Often the design team will reimagine existing pieces of furniture and reincorporate them into the design in a totally different way that not only saves money, but also time and the destruction of often perfectly good objects and materials.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/23624/image/large-45b8788dcba9e39c6591a40a23f05fd8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23624">Despite not having a consistent ‘style’ you can spot a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Cristiano Gatto Design</a> yacht because of the details of construction that few other designers would implement. “One owner called me shortly after we delivered their yacht, and he said ‘I am lying in bed and am getting so much joy from the details of the ceiling moulding that we never discussed and I would only notice from this exact place in bed. I know that you created that especially for me, so thank you’.” For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cristiano Gatto Design (Company)">Gatto</a>, this epitomises the approach the studio takes. By truly getting to know an owner, you are able to gather information and make informed decisions about what they will take joy from, even in the tiny details.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/23621/image/large-513b3acb079434c7aa8a5281c47dfc94.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23621">“One of the best moments is when you see a client step aboard the yacht for the first time and they are surprised by the final effect. That demonstrates the richness of the finish and the detail of the design because they’ve seen the 3D renders, they’ve seen the materials, but only the designer truly understands how they will come together – that surprise is everything.”

During the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> “Road to 2030” business presentation, the Italian shipbuilder detailed its strategy toward a carbon-neutral future, confirmed its strong financial health and announced its intention to acquire <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1011" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Simpson Marine (Company)">Simpson Marine</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261779/image/large-33c2013c7f70e6061b95ebfb1d89c641.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261779">The attitudes toward luxury and yachting are changing fast in China, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> “expects big growth in Asia”, Massimo Perotti, Chairman and CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>, explained during the conference. “In the last year, we have seen two signs indicating change. The first is the Hainan Highlands – considered the monte-carlo of China – becoming a free tax zone. So the Chinese can go to Hainan Highlands and buy a yacht without paying taxes. A big achievement. Secondly, there is a programme from the government to increase the number of marinas from Hong Kong to Macau.”&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1011" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Simpson Marine (Company)">Simpson Marine</a> is the oldest and most established yacht dealer in Asia and the exclusive dealer of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> in the region. According to Ferruccio Rossi, Executive Director &amp; General Manager of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1011" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Simpson Marine (Company)">Simpson Marine</a> currently generates around €90-100 million annually, with “growing potential” for more sales in the region. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/186547/image/large-027506dd02607cf9f9f97c2bd2ae425b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/186547">Read:&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/54941" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="How Hong Kong could ignite a yachting boom in China (2022-04-12 14:00:00 +0200)">How Hong Kong could ignite a yachting boom in China</a>Outside of Asia and looking at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> more generally, the builder confirmed outstanding financial health with a backlog (as of 31 December 2022) cleared from Net Revenue New Yachts amounting to €1,069.6 million, compared to €915.6 million as of 31 December 2021. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> confirmed record-breaking orders for €452.2 million beyond 2023.&nbsp;An interesting phenomenon cited in the conference was a decrease in the average <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> client. Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> buyers were, on average, 56 yet post-lockdown years, this age now stands at 48 – a significant decrease that brings a “new mindset to the yachting industry”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/178254/image/large-41061535f69fe7ca1d2c1b710787f63e.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/178254"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> has found that their average buyer is not only younger but is now spending twice as much time on board, with estimates as high as 120 days per year. Novel technologies such as Starlink support this trend, as owners can stay connected near enough anywhere in the world.&nbsp;In regards to its sustainability mission in the superyacht sector, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> confirmed it is still on track to launch the first 50 Steel equipped with methanol fuel cells to power all on-board services next year; and in 2028, it will launch the first superyacht – another 50 Steel – to be powered solely by methanol. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/192118/image/large-739ebb232bb40646a582286340b4632e.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/192118">Read:&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/56805" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo to launch 'net-zero' superyacht in 2027 (2023-01-24 12:30:00 +0100)">Sanlorenzo to launch 'net-zero' superyacht in 2027</a>Looking forward, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> expects to see high single-digit CAGR, starting with a forecast for 2023 between €810-830 million, up by 11% from 2022. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> also expects its margin to increase significantly, with an EBITDA margin equal to or greater than 19.5% in 2025.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> plans to invest between €143-155 million over the next three years. It will also expand its current portfolio of models from 26 to 36, comprising 17 in the yacht business unit, 8 in the superyacht business unit and 11 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5648" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bluegame (Company)">Bluegame</a>.&nbsp;

The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> reports strong financial health and remarkable growth across all areas in 2022 compared to 2021, with a net revenue of over €1 billion in 2022.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260867/image/large-5e5d5c3dcbe40ce54198eb723f80f847.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260867">The Italian-based group reports a strong order book for 2022 with an intake of €1.162 billion, up by 19.6 percent in comparison to 2021, which the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> pins down to a strong global market demand. They have also won a significant number of orders during this period with a backlog of €1.296 billion, up by 27.6 percent compared to 2021.&nbsp;The impressive order backlog breakdown comes from composite yachts, made-to-measure yachts and superyachts, as well as other businesses, including ancillaries. The majority of the backlog comes from composite yachts, which reached €439.3 million, making up 42.6 percent of total revenues in 2022.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/205162/image/large-55c378269a7c50145cf5561442898726.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/205162">Overall, the net revenue for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> reached an impressive €1.030 billion for the period ending December 31, 2022 - a 14.6 percent increase to the previous year where <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti</a> capped out at €898.4 million.&nbsp;Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amoritisation (EBITDA) was up 36.5 percent as the firm hit €102.6 million, with an EBITDA margin of 14.1 percent. They also have a net profit of €60.5 million, which amounts to a growth margin of 6.1 percent from last year. They will also focus on the vertical integration of strategic and high value-added activities to ensure excellence in the luxury design, performance, quality and reliability of their yachts, and on improving the overall offer with the aim of strengthening the resilience and profitability of the business.

<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> is an Italian shipyard with a dynasty that spans the best part of a century. Despite being founded in 1945 in Limite sull’Arno to build and repair smaller yachts, by 1956 the yard was moved to Darsena Pisana as it had started signing projects too large for its facility.&nbsp;The shipyard has had an illustrious history, delivering more than 700 yachts &nbsp;– the largest of which being the 43.6-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1655" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cap de Quers43.6m (143'1&quot;)Cantieri di Pisa2006">Cap de Quers</a>. The 27.43-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nasima 27.43m (89'12&quot;)Cantieri di Pisa2012">Nasima</a> was the yard’s last build, and following her delivery in 2012 the yard closed and was finally sold.&nbsp;The shipyard was bought 18 months ago and is back in business, with a fleet of new projects under its new leadership. SuperYacht Times sat down with CEO Marco Massabò to hear all about it.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260833/image/large-8899422b8b6ae0ea4429c0654f8f493f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260833">What is your background prior to&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>?&nbsp;Yachts have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. My father was a wood master and started working at a shipyard in Imperia, Italy, 70 years ago. I love boats and have professionally sailed for many years, competing from the Optimist to the Maxi yacht regattas – I’ve had a long collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/758" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="North Sails (Company)">North Sails</a>.&nbsp;In 1992 I met Luca Bassani, founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a>, and worked alongside him for 20 years. The brand was missing a refit yard in Italy, so I bought and founded one (WS Shipyard) in Savona. It's been very successful. I then moved into consultancy around 2010, working with clients both in yachting and shipping.&nbsp;I was working with some major players – it was a nice life. But around a year and a half ago, Enrico Gennasio (president and owner of the Alfagomma group) told me he was going to buy <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>, asking if I wanted to work with him.&nbsp;A great opportunity. I immediately got to work, spending time with naval architects and exterior designers, dreaming up the best yachts we can bring to market. The shipyard had great energy, and a number of great international designers came to visit us. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259110/image/large-dc2f2a0d48808d14b563a945716e4215.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259110"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>&nbsp;is back building yachts. Do these new models reflect a new vision?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> is an iconic brand. We’re not here to change the rules, we want to rewrite them. The yachts that we’ve started to build are different from what <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> traditionally did. But we also want to be different from our competitors.&nbsp;Rather than starting from aesthetics, our primary interest is weight. We want to save as much weight as possible, to build and deliver some of the lightest yachts on the market. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> yachts are fast, agile, and incredibly sleek and all have shallow drafts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/258737/image/large-8913f6c24d1edd5383a600b3c775dbbb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/258737">The 25m 80 Veloce – the first&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>&nbsp;yacht since 2012 – is scheduled for delivery this year. Can you say a few words about her?&nbsp;The 80 Veloce is our first yacht. We wanted to build something that embodies our new philosophy – and she’s crazy fast! She’ll be equipped with three 2,000 horsepower V12 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1441" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MAN (Company)">MAN</a> engines that deliver a top speed in excess of 60 knots. The series has been well received and we already have clients signed for the second and third hull.&nbsp;She’s not for everyone though – which is why we’re about to present a Gran Turismo edition to the market. The 80 GT is based on the same lightweight hull yet with a more family-focused design. She’ll also be equipped with two engines, not three. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/258738/image/large-72d27a22a4c507d152fcab6398958f5e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/258738"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>&nbsp;also presented the new Akhir series. Has this model line been well received and are you considering building on speculation?&nbsp;The Akhir series is a new design for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> which is offered in three sizes: a 31-metre, a 37-metre and a 42-metre flagship. Much like the 80 Veloce the idea is to keep the weight down as much as possible. The series has a contemporary design and we’re in talks about whether to build the first unit on speculation – it might happen, but I can’t confirm either way at this moment in time. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259105/image/large-50b2769c2995a007591094d39d092014.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259105">Why is weight such an important topic for&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>?Any sailor will tell you the importance of weight – they just will. I’ve personally sailed around the world on some of the world’s most important and fastest boats, and every time their core attribute was weight. However, shipyards and designers rarely consider weight early on when they’re planning a new project. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> does things differently, it’s my absolute credo. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259106/image/large-848f31e2855eb67f5df5c8156f48eba3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259106">Choosing to build light implies a commitment to delivering yachts with shallow drafts. How else are you trying to maximise this across all your series?&nbsp;We’ll equip both the 80 Veloce and Gran Turismo series with waterjets. Waterjets are the safest way to arrive at high speeds and they can go in really shallow waters. And to overcome issues of sucking up sand (a particular issue in Miami), we’ve added a special sea chest. It's a simple, not crazy innovation.&nbsp;Coming from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a>, I of course have taken inspiration from their model lines and I especially like what they’ve done with the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a> 118 Power – the James Bond yacht. But I’ve also listened closely to my friend and naval architect, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Marco Arnaboldi (Company)">Marco Arnaboldi</a>, who designed many fast boats, including the CDP80 veloce. He’s one of the best in the world when it comes to waterjet technology. We decided to follow him on our design – there isn’t anyone better! <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259100/image/large-e738a900d681e7e9b00f4677cfafd4fd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259100">An automotive designer and America’s Cup engineer collaborating on your designs. How did this come about?It’s simple. We want speed and performance, so why not bring in the best? A typical motor yacht goes around 18 to 20 knots, yet a high-performance America’s Cup sailing yacht reaches speeds of up to 40 knots – it’s a big difference, even if you factor out the foils. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a> we want to use this knowledge to study the possibilities of reducing as much drag as possible with our yachts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260834/image/large-1241be498043c5a2ee330d299e207c7c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260834">For the past 18 months,&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>&nbsp;has focused exclusively on refits. Why?&nbsp;We weren’t ready for new builds until now, we needed to establish ourselves. When we took over <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>, it hadn’t been operating for 10 years. We invested around €1.5 million to renovate the facilities and in the past 18 months, we have worked on 27 yachts, which brings a good level of return for the business: building capital and our reputation.&nbsp;Working as a refit yard has also put us in direct communication with many captains, which is great for our Research &amp; Development. For the past 18 months, we’ve been learning the trouble points and how to build a perfect yacht, designed for the captain.&nbsp;We’ve continued to invest and we’ll soon announce a new facility.&nbsp;

But perhaps also one of its most innovative, thanks to a heavy investment in its facilities on either side of the Miami River.&nbsp;In 2020, the completely rebuilt North Yard reopened as Miami Superyacht Center and was complete with a 2,700-tonne synchrolift. The South Yard was also renovated and is dedicated for the smaller refit works that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5531" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RMK Merrill-Stevens (Company)">RMK Merrill-Stevens</a> takes on. The shipyard is about to undergo even more change as Marco Santoro has recently been appointed CEO, and he’s ambitious to turn <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5531" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RMK Merrill-Stevens (Company)">RMK Merrill-Stevens</a> into the go-to destination for yacht service and refit. We are also growing our new yacht and brokerage sales operations, representing new brands as their exclusive dealer.&nbsp;For the time being though, we’re focusing on our current market, as we are in the yachting capital of the world. Refitting involves many moving parts, in our geographical area there are only a handful of shipyards capable of hosting these projects. Mainly there are a limited number of suppliers and a limited number of qualified technicians for installation and repairs.&nbsp;Having navigated the industry for more than 20 years, I understand where there may be issues and can plan ahead to avoid delays. In addition, I have built strong relationships with suppliers and vendors. It is a small industry and having strong relationships is a big advantage. One day you help a supplier and the next day they help you. Abdullah Alhayyas, the Director of Maritime Transport Affairs Department at the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) on March 2, 2023 at the Dubai International Boat Show. The ceremony was attended by H.E. Hessa Al Malek, Executive Director of the Maritime Sector at the Federal Transportation Authority for Land and Maritime, and the Board of Directors of the Leisure Marine Association.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260516/image/large-c027e70c598eed031d7d0f45d0a31ab4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260516">The Leisure Marine Association, based in Dubai, is a marine trade association that represents the interests of the boating and yachting industry and is an advocate for the leisure marine community across the Middle East and North Africa. These two organisations signing an MoU, a nonbinding agreement that states each party’s intentions to form a new partnership, will accelerate the growth of the leisure marine industry in the UAE, a vital contributor to the region’s maritime sector. The yacht, which is available for charter, can accommodate up to 12 guests and 29 crew.
