At the recent East Med Yacht Show I met up with Spiros Galanakis, the managing director of ATHENS YACHTS. Spiros founded his company in 1995 and he nowadays manages a fleet of numerous luxurious charter yachts which includes the 41 metre superyacht Panther 2 and the 36 metre superyacht Dragon.
However this was very different in the past as Spiros explains, ”Back in the years there were no central agencies agreements between the owners and charter companies, it was an open market and everyone could charter yachts with using their favourite connections. This has changed in the last few years when more companies started to work with the central agency model".
"Proudly speaking we were the first Greek company to become a MYBA member and among the first who established the Central Agency model. Now we also see newer and larger yachts entering the Greek charter market, but also the crew(s) has improved a lot.”
Speaking about his ambitions with Athens Yachts, Spiros tells me, Quality Vs Quantity…“I like expansion, improvement and growth but our policy has always been that we are a “boutique company” with some of the best charter yachts in Greece. We want more yachts but we will only take the best…We want quality CA’s and not a large number of anonymous fleet".
According to Spiros the East Med Yacht Show, formerly known as the Poros Yacht Charter Show, is improving compared to past years.
“We have changed the name of the event as we wanted to give it a more international appeal. We are open to changes and ready to welcome anyone who has high yachting criteria. The 2013 edition was a good event for us and we are looking forward to a busy charter season”.
