It is a vital step to ensure the viability of the design before the involvement of a shipyard, and while some designers come from a naval architecture background, many do not have that training.&nbsp;If a naval architect gets on the table from the beginning, they will be able to ensure that plans are technically feasible, but they can also help to come up with new solutions alongside the designer.&nbsp;Often designers and owners want to do something new and innovative, but are unsure about the possibilities, we can help with this. We are currently undergoing this process for four or five projects and we see shipyards responding extremely positively to receiving a well developed plan, which in return serves the clients.&nbsp;What risks are involved when not engaging a naval architect?Money and time! If a plan is not well developed on a technical level before the contract is signed, that will immediately lead to a large number of change orders or a longer engineering process. It may also end up in a vessel quite unlike what the client initially envisioned and expected.&nbsp;This is more important now than ever, with new propulsion systems and alternative fuels being explored by many shipyard’s and clients. At Van Oossanen we have been working extensively to perfect the structure and operation of a variety of alternative fuels and are continuously undergoing research and development to make sure that they are safe when they are applied. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;What is your process when it comes to new design innovations?It all starts with listening to the client and asking questions to determine what is truly important for them, how they want to use the yacht, what is the preferred cruising area, etc. From here we can start with the layout from the technical side, doing some preliminary space planning and get all the deck arrangements right and provide that as an underlay for the designer to build upon.&nbsp;If the design itself comes with an innovative idea, which is not industry standard, we look at it from a regulatory standpoint. Then we look at the impact on the vessel’s stability, alongside a number of other potential risk factors which allows us to start calculating the feasibility of the design innovation. We are a bridge, connecting all parties, rather than working with one side or another.When it comes to running the project, it really comes down to managing the information, we manage the risks, evaluate the progress of the build and make sure that all the key stakeholders have the necessary information at the right time.As we said before, recognising potential issues as early as possible prevents costly changes at a later stage, creating a far more seamless process for the builder and the client. The acrylic topcoat has a faster drying time, offering less surface area for dirt particles to adhere to the still-wet paint film. This topcoat is also slightly softer than a Polyurethane or BC/CC system, allowing for a very good polishability once dried. “With Acrylic Topcoat X, we have a product on the market for a good two years that plays on the level of the other two systems in terms of gloss level – even surpassing them in some cases," commented Thomas. Acrylic Topcoat X is frequently used in Europe as well, specifically Italy, Greece, and Turkey, with an excellent foothold in the US with smaller yacht users. The refit and painting conditions in these locations are also not necessarily cleanroom quality, and sea winds create particles in the air that could harm the wet paint. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> however, we have our ‘Deep Data department’ that sources data from all over the world through various custom developed applications as well as significant human resources, making sure our brokers have the most accurate and acute information in the industry, as well as having it first.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219126/image/large-206b550a22422538d353d3e1d1b64044.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219126">“If you strip it down to its basic tenets, the world of yacht broking is an information and facilitation business,” says Ziriakus. “The value of data within the yachting industry can be pivotal to a company’s success.” This could not have been more evident than in recent years, when major market high, such as 2021 and early 2022, saw scares supply and very few superyachts of pedigree were hitting the market. N&amp;J’s investment in data has enabled them to ride the sector wave with massive success, including reporting recently that its brokers sold 36% more yachts on average per broker than its closest competitor in 2022, selling a yacht almost every 48 hours during 2022.When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> isn't in the news for its extensive catalogue of sales, the brokerage house is stealing the limelight with partnership after partnership, and for Ziriakus this has also been one of the greatest growth assets for the company. “The strategic partnerships team has been working hard to build deep, multi-year partnerships with other brands that go far beyond simply sharing a logo or sponsoring events. The true value lies in the business development opportunities that arise from coverage on such a popular channel. “These infotainment-style videos are a fantastic asset,” explains Ziriakus, “not only because we create cool and interesting content, but because we visit shipyards, talk to clients and experts, and that content directly brings in leads to both the brokerage and the charter departments. Patrick Marine: How a boutique yacht company cornered the market and built a strong global presence

There is a deft art to creating bespoke one-of-a-kind tenders, especially as they come in such a variety of shapes and sizes. The demands placed on these smaller vessels are just as high as those of the motherships – in some instances, even more. Versatility is fed directly into their DNA and no builder knows this better than the Australia-based <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal International</a>.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal International</a> was founded in 1982 and has delivered more than 75 fully custom tenders to world’s largest motor yachts. Topaz) pitched the project. The 11.25-metre Open Sports limousine tender elegantly skims across the water with grace and comfort, thanks to her ingeniously engineered hull and two punchy <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo</a> D6 400 horsepower diesel engines.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> furnished the custom Topaz Convertible with a cream, rounded settee that wraps a heavily varnished coffee table. Befit for a tender belonging to such an outstanding mothership, the Topaz Convertible is suave, sophisticated and a point of pride for owner and guests to embark from when perusing the treasures onland. Her crowning feature though is undoubtedly her hardtop convertible roof – a world’s first for a tender of this size – which allows for usage in any weather condition. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256232/image/large-8988d9422027cffa438b371dd20a6e71.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256232">19m Octopus Dive TenderAt 18.8-metres the custom-built Octopus Dive Tender is one of the largest power boats to complement a superyacht. With a penchant for speed and a requirement to reach some of the most remote and daring dive locations in the world, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> had a challenge. A challenge that a ready-made solution could never cater to. The marketplace for ready-made solutions might be thriving, but it’s not perfect.Australia’s resident designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/98" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sam Sorgiovanni Designs P/L (Company)">Sam Sorgiovanni</a> oversaw her design – and most definitely delivered. The Octopus Dive Tender is refined, lavish and brimming with amenities expected on a yacht, not a tender. She can carry as many as 10 guests, who can kick back in utmost comfort in her plush saloon, and she has a generous aft deck for seamless access to the water. Thanks to twin <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1409" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MTU (Company)">MTU</a> engines, the Octopus Dive Tender can reach speeds in excess of 40 knots.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256228/image/large-e97a5f6fe4b00aa7785de9dd3a193030.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256228">10m Secret Limousine&nbsp;Many superyachts have a low tender transom garage, which is typically used to store a RIB or water toys. But the space can also be utilised for a more luxurious limousine tender – you just have to be clever. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> had to keep the tender’s height under two metres, which makes an enclosed aft normally impossible. To counter this, an electronically operated hardtop was fitted so once out the garage the shell roof can be opened to welcome the owner and guests onboard.The 9.8-metre Secret Limousine tender is fitted with twin D4 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo</a> diesel engines that deliver a top speed of 48 knots. Topaz), is a 12-metre custom-built Cargo Catamaran. This tender was commissioned to serve the yacht, acting as a private taxi, a dive platform and the vessel to supply fuel and cargo to and from shore. To facilitate dive expeditions, the Topaz Catamaran is equipped with a modular unit fitted to the front deck with an 18+ dive bottle capacity. Her bow was also customised to aid guests with seamless sea access.&nbsp;The 12-metre Topaz Catamaran is equipped with a pair of D6 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo</a> Diesels coupled to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5769" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hamilton Jet (Company)">Hamilton</a> HJ 292 water jets that deliver a top speed of 35 knots. She’s incredibly versatile and is handy for fishing excursions, equipped with all necessary paraphernalia. Over the last decade and a half, the Italian designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6168" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Francesco Struglia Design (Company)">Francesco Struglia</a> has built a career working with some of the top names in the yachting industry. Cutting his teeth with the inimitable <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/105" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zuccon International Project (Company)">Zuccon International Project</a>, Struglia has learnt from the best since his very earliest days in design, cultivating a childhood passion for drawing into a formidable career as consultant to one of the world’s largest shipyards. Today his studio is focusing its energies on the superyacht sector, and in addition to his yachting , Struglia is also building a name for himself as the designer of bespoke and production yachting furniture. We sat down with Francesco for an interview, to find out more about his mutli-faceted approach to all-things design.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256239/image/large-9c6a34846b801d1a5739b31a9685bc08.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256239">“I was very fortunate during my studies to have been taught by Giovanni Zuccon,” explained Francesco, “who took me under his wing and brought me into the amazing world of yacht design. I learned the intricacies of fibreglass yacht construction, and, working on exterior and layout planning, was given the opportunity to pour my artistic passion into the creation of unique vessels. It was very inspiring.” After his period at the Italian studio, Francesco turned to Northern Europe and joined the ranks of the famous <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/55" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omega Architects (Company)">Omega Architects</a> under Frank Laupman, who Struglia believes is the very best in the industry within the 50 metre segment. In the Netherlands, Struglia had the opportunity to combine his passionate and romantic Italian design approach, with an effective, creative, and time scheduled real Dutch workflow. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256236/image/large-292dd35fccc32701de1aba2b4176b31b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256236"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256234/image/large-407f33146083d390d9d8c9189e3c1bd1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256234">It wasn’t long after his tenure at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/55" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omega Architects (Company)">Omega</a> that Struglia found himself back in Italy and working in the Style Department Team of Giovanna Vitelli at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a>. Working closely alongside the technical teams, Francesco became closely entrenched within the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> styling, and after many years of work, with his new own studio established, he was given the opportunity to pitch for a new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> motor boat series, the series which later became the Verve, styled in its entirety by Francesco himself. The Verve has now sold more than 100 units, far exceeding any expectations Francesco, or <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a>, had for the model.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256246/image/large-91ba3e6484039c80652e30d433423f3b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256246"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/248918/image/large-6ac433b20523fe5f7812fa6f4e2f3675.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/248918">Then in the late 2010’s, the studio was contacted by Giovanna Vitelli and asked to work on the start of a new series, signing the first model this time for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>. “It really began in an informal way, building that strong relationship with the shipyard over a number of years meant that they had faith that I was capable of distilling the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut-Benetti</a> mentality and design ethos into a new model. We worked closely with the Benetti team on what became the Motopanfilo series, which was always intended to be a classic motor yacht series.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/248906/image/large-8ef9f449ef54f2a5e58f662937bea44d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/248906">Eight hulls of the 37-metre Motopanfilo series have now been sold, with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10815" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="eh²36.8m (120'9&quot;)Benetti SpA2022">Eh²</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10892" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hayat36.8m (120'9&quot;)Benetti SpA2022">Hayat</a> both launched in 2022. The yacht was Struglia’s first solo superyacht design and it's no surprise that the model has been such a success, with his deep and intimate understanding of the shipyard’s styling. In fact to this day, the studio works closely with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut-Benetti</a>, consulting the designers, both in-house and externally, on new models. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/248911/image/large-16bb8aaf031363dd431d75c3c908a53b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/248911">It is clear in speaking to Francesco that he has a true form-equals-function mentality when it comes to design, something he has no doubt learned over a career with some of the industry's top designers. Removing the superfluous and distilling his designs right down to include only what is necessary means that his lines are characteristically minimal, flowing and uninterrupted. It's this same design ethos that the studio takes to all of its design projects, working both on industrial projects and designing bespoke furniture.In 2020, the studio entered into a design partnership with ARAS Italia, an Italian-pedigree company working with artisans in the leather industry and which has an excellent portfolio in the automotive industries. The goal of the partnership was to design two driving seats for the yachting sector and a bar stool for the luxury yachting furniture sector and the first three products were presented by ARAS at the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="METSTRADE - 2022">2022 METSTRADE</a> to much applause from the industry. Interview with Italian designer Francesco Struglia: Navigating the world of yacht and furniture design

Changes in yachting are notoriously glacial – until last year. When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4784" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holterman Shipyard (Company)">Holterman Shipyard</a> delivered its 32.65-metre superyacht X-treme 105, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a>, it was quite literally the ‘talk of the town’, and when she debuted at <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2022">Cannes Yachting Festival</a> the quay was awash with amazement. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255560/image/large-94c48888fcef698d75ab0d933383b59d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255560"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> is radically practical and it’s easy to pass her off as a traditional monohull with a large aft deck for tender storage; but behind her taut muscular design is an unusual and complex piece of engineering: a novel aft deck that can be hydraulically lowered below the waterline to safely launch and retrieve a large tender. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255483/image/large-afea7a6a5101cf22d6d8ec50c7f91540.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255483">The seed of inspiration was sown by her owners, who wanted a multipurpose aft deck: tender storage, a deep but safe swimming pool for their grandchildren, and somewhere to host intimate dinner parties. This all had to be squeezed into a 32.65-metre platform. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4789" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bernd Weel Design (Company)">Bernd Weel Design</a> was the studio behind stylish, muscular and very attractive exterior design. But the big question, though: will it work? And who better to put the challenge to than <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>?&nbsp;“We’re not afraid of a challenge,” Casper Marelis, Naval Architect &amp; Designer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">Diana Yacht Design</a>, told SuperYacht Times. “But this really was a major one, and we’ve definitely learnt a lot from this project.” The biggest learning curve, not only for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. (Company)">DIANA</a> but for the industry, was engineering a system that could deploy and retrieve a large tender, without the use of a crane. It was a major undertaking – and one that has never been done before. It also came with an added benefit: ease of boarding for both crew and guests. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255481/image/large-96bbf6726a378615aad31a2d2b201ba5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255481"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> features a traditional motor yacht hull, but from amidships, her long aft is divided between two hulls, with the central divide making space for the tender lift that includes a lengthy pool. The platform can be lowered, in between the two hulls collecting seawater and then raised again, to create a pool. The maximum depth of the pool is 6-foot but it can be completely customised for when the younger members of the family are enjoying a swim. When underway the pool floor is hydraulically lifted, turning the aft deck into a wide, flat multi-functional space.“Compared to a ‘normal’ catamaran hull the deck above/between the two hulls on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Fleur32.65m (107'1&quot;)Holterman Shipyard2022">Lady Fleur</a> which normally absorbs the forces created by waves is missing,” Marelis explained. “So this means theoretically the PS hull can move up and the SB hull can move down. These forces all transfer to the connection point to the monohull instead of the deck above. An extensive ‘Finite Elements Method’ short FEM calculation made it possible to analyse these forces and the resulting tensions in the structure and made it possible to strengthen the problem areas very precisely. To give you an example, there are parts which had to be 40mm thick high tensile steel while without the fold down platform the thickness could be 5mm normal steel.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255480/image/large-5b3817c529eabb79a5ea8c0d139db18c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255480"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Diana Yacht Design B.V. Even though this was novel, the studio was determined to actualise the owner’s wishes. Coincidently, after devising a method for the system to raise and lower, the pool was relatively easy to engineer.&nbsp;“The forces on the system depend on how much of a closed volume (air) must be pushed underwater. So we made the structure of the platform hollow above the waterline to minimise this volume. This left a big ‘empty space’ which could also house a pool. This can fill up while the system lowers. And although almost 14 tonnes of water has to be lifted afterwards, the closed volume of the platform will push this extra weight upwards.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255559/image/large-4eb454ec2d910f2e0bfe6612c0786252.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255559">Naturally though, such a radical design was to cause waves throughout the vessel and more challenges arose, especially after a last-minute request to add a garage at midships: where to place the engine room?“With the last minute change it meant that all the equipment moved aft, but also the structural parts like the engine seating. This meant a lot of extra weight in the aft ship for which the hull form had to be adapted. More weight in the multihull arms also meant more forces and vibrations which had to be accounted for,” Marelis said. “Due to the addition of a tender garage the multihull arms turned into the engine rooms. This meant splitting the engine rooms, so doubling up on multiple systems while the space got smaller. But this also meant moving the propshafts outboard which has a negative effect on flow towards the propeller. After selling the firm to First Niagara Financial Group, Rob was appointed as the company’s Senior Vice President, where he guided the Insurance Division with over $600,000,000 in annual sales. He also founded Lama Commercial Real Estate, where he negotiated site acquisitions for a number of large American retailers, including Walmart, CVS, and Rite Aid. During this time, Lama owned a yacht in Miami for his entire family to enjoy.&nbsp;After moving to Miami, Lama combined his love of yachting with his business acumen, establishing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5135" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miami International Yacht Sales LLC. (Company)">Miami International Yacht Sale</a>. Lama’s business and negotiation experience enabled him to find his niche in the sale of vessels over 30-metres.
