For many businesses this competition can become overwhelming, but for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2719" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boero YachtCoatings (Company)">Boero YachtCoatings</a>, who specialises in yacht paints, coatings and protection, it has fostered the demand for a sharing of knowledge to maintain a sense of value.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/207401/image/large-f5a7811d27b380a8e28898a45f2ecfcd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/207401">It is from these challenges that the BYCacademy was born in 2018, aimed at sharing and dispersing skills and expertise from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2719" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boero YachtCoatings (Company)">Boero YachtCoatings</a> specialists to the industry as a whole. The result is a series of training courses, teaching clients and teams the skills necessary to use the products at hand, from painting to repair. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/207400/image/large-f252915388e3034d7d2bf996baca4e92.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/207400">The training courses on offer range from individual bespoke lessons, when specialists from the academy travel to shipyards to teach custom courses to the crew, to technical training on site at the BYCacademy in Rivalta Scrivia, Italy. Despite the restrictions imposed by the Covid pandemic, Technical and Product manager Cristiano Bighetti has been keeping incredibly busy, with 25 courses already completed this year. “The demand for the academy is fantastic, not only from shipyards, but also from captains, project managers, brokers and other professionals. It is clear that this dissemination of knowledge is important and we see our team expanding in the future to accommodate the demand.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/201603/image/large-7976cebf542b4a1fe405fd574f1b11b5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/201603">Online courses are offered by the specialists, though Bighetti recognises that retaining clients over long periods online is not a practical solution. “We have had to adapt for the online classes, but the theory behind our work is just as important and the online work lends itself well to being paired with practical classes down the line.” Even as we spoke Bighetti was organising a call with a team in Dubai, setting up a training programme with some of the team in a shipyard there.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/113499/image/large-16dc88397231472a6df14f51d75bac7e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/113499">It could seem counterintuitive for the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2719" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boero YachtCoatings (Company)">Gruppo Boero</a> to have organised the BYCacademy, but for the team it was a natural solution. They already had fantastic products that worked and were proven, but if the application and use of those products is wrong, it undermines the ability of the product to work as it should. How to achieve the ultimate paint finish for your superyacht

We met up with Andrea Cavalleroni of Boero YachtCoatings to find out how these superyacht paint specialists are finding the METSTRADE, and what makes the 2016 edition special for them.

Can you tell us what you are showcasing at METSRADE this year?

One of our main products that we are presenting here at METS this year is our new Epoyacht filler. This new product goes hand in hand with our Epolight Win – known as the lightest filler on the market. The new filler is an evolution of this product, whilst maintaining its excellent physical and mechanical properties. It is perfectly suited to the Northern European market, but also to Italian yacht builders, who currently make up our target market.

Boero has built up a strong research and development department in the company. Can you tell us more about the work that is being done by them?

Our research and development department is one the key parts of our company and has become a service that we invested a lot of time in. One of the main projects which the team is currently working on is the new BPR regulations for antifouling. We have done extensive work on the subject in the past, particularly during project LEAF (Low Emission Antifouling), which involved various universities and institutions across Europe in developing a greener and safer product for the environment. This was initiated as a prototype and we hope to soon be able to introduce this technology to the market.

What is it about METSTRADE that makes Boero YachtCoatings keep coming back each year?

I find this is one of the two main shows of the year for us. The Monaco Yacht Show our most important in-water event of the year, and as a trade show, METSTRADE is certainly the best.
