It is a really challenging class to win, and to then win the overall title is not easy. The race crew that we have are a really nice bunch of people who have a lot of respect for the permanent crew. Looking back to August 1986, one can observe the humble beginnings of the Bucket Regattas, the very first of which was a hastily thrown-together affair in Nantucket, Massachusetts. The originary seeds of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="St. Barths Bucket Regatta - 2023">Bucket Regattas</a> were sown in a spirited discussion that took place at a high-society birthday celebration between several yacht owners concerning optimal yacht design and individual sailing prowess.With undisputed bragging rights to last an annum hailed as the grand prize, the following day seven sailing yachts raced on a make-shift 15 nautical mile course around Nantucket Sound. However, participants soon learned that camaraderie formed at sea between like-minded individuals was the greatest prize of all. After a nearby bucket was deemed the perfect commemoration, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="St. Barths Bucket Regatta - 2023">Bucket Regatta</a> was born, and the spirit of camaraderie remains the beating heart of the regatta.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/29460/image/large-0ec115066e113aada7f13d410a0a338b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/29460">The course itself is demanding, spanning just over 23 nautical miles. “It is a challenging place to sail at times, especially when you go around the island on day one and three in the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="St. Barths Bucket Regatta - 2023">Bucket</a>. Particularly last year, when it was very windy,” said Captain Newton. “Out on the eastern side of the island you get big seas and it is pretty breezy.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/29482/image/large-bedbc7adaa16fcaec8401eb16f2b4713.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/29482">For casual sailing, Captain Newton recommended, “The group of islands off the north coast of the St Barths make it brilliant for sailing, as there are some pretty interesting routes.” Here, sailors can find a rugged sailing ground home to a wealth of secluded bays and uninhabited islands and islets. “It is a pretty spectacular place to sail,” Captain Newton continued, “You get a mix of the flat water on the Leeside and big waves out to the east.”St Barths is a charming and flirty Caribbean island with a reputation for its luxurious feel and glitz-studded, lively atmosphere. “St Barths is particularly busy during the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="St. Barths Bucket Regatta - 2023">Bucket</a>,” Captain Newton laughed. “It feels like the Caribbean French Riviera. I’m going to let you in on a secret: you don’t need a 70-metre Ice Class explorer with all the trappings to venture beyond the Arctic Circle. It helps, of course. But you don’t need it. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/53695/image/large-e178dc99c85345f11b6d21b02f0f5d2a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53695">Arctic exploration, famed for being reserved for the rugged, intrepid type that have the keen ability to fend off packs of polar bears, scurvy, frostbite and hunger with nothing but a swiss army knife (you know the stories), has become more accessible. Ice-punching tall ships are no longer a necessity for the journey, just good planning can get you there.Around 75 percent more pleasure vessels are making the most of this too, with close to 2,000 yachts and cruise ships now making the trip annually. The Arctic Ocean might be the smallest of the world’s five, but it still boasts 14.06 million km² of area that spans eight countries, so don’t expect the region to be thriving with fellow explorers – they’ll be few and far between.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251497/image/large-53c166032fa50b37790363816b469d45.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251497">Safety is paramount when looking into high latitude cruising and it goes without saying that you want a trustworthy vessel that can withstand the harsh temperatures and pressures of the Arctic Ocean. An Ice Class vessel would definitely be favourable, but not owning one doesn’t make the region inaccessible &nbsp;– it just depends on how far north you want to go.Most yachts – even white med boats – can get you to some pretty remote locations. Steel and aluminium perhaps more so, but GRP-constructed vessels are also pretty hardy, especially those that aren’t constructed from “sandwich” composite. But always, always get them professionally inspected before setting off.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251489/image/large-ebf94223b2711646a3a0993d24cf407c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251489">For owners of smaller yachts, it's wise to double-check the keel and rudder of your vessel as with the thrill of navigating uncharted waters comes the risk of becoming grounded at some point during the trip. Your yacht needs to be able to withstand this stress. For the same reason, it’s not a bad idea to bring a spare propeller and a member of crew who can maintain the vessel in case of an incident.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/53696/image/large-1f2d185fd2840da51045a602d32b8ab2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53696">An inflatable RIB is also strongly advised, as well as two heavy anchors that will keep you steadfast at great depths and against strong, prevailing katabatic winds. However much easier the Arctic may be to reach, it still needs to be well respected; expect extreme weather conditions, poor chartering, a lack of shelter and to be self-sufficient for the duration of your trip. But, as anyone who’s made the trip will attest: it’s worth it.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251499/image/large-648c16ce76dc1819e77ef5968dd656a2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251499">“There is so much unexpected intrigue in the Arctic, which I think is kind of part of the charm,” Venetia Stagg, Expedition Designer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6954" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pelorus (Company)">Pelorus</a>, said. “People do expect massive ice sheets, deep blue as far as the eye can see, and maybe a walrus or two, but there is much more to the region than that.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251498/image/large-ffbde956c02573f6bc38d9f0b265e234.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251498">The Arctic spans the northern regions of Canada, Greenland, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Alaska – each with its own cultures and untempered flora and fauna. Each season has its own charm, the summer season (June, July and August) is the most popular. These months are the most raucous on the wildlife front as its both mating and hatching season. It’s also the most accessible as passages, such as the Hinlopen Strait on the western side of Svalbard, have thawed sufficiently, allowing free passage.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/121720/image/large-e38de5257fa31175168f0abd8c297d96.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/121720">Bring sunscreen, mosquito repellent, shorts and polarised sunglasses though, as during the days you can expect high heats and the critters that invariably come with these temperatures. Black-out blinds are also strongly recommended, as nightfall isn’t much of a thing during these months.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251491/image/large-e178f7c5c6fd3dc0afeb5d591f24d3fd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251491">“The Arctic summer can get really quite warm, it’s lovely. But do pack layers, both for yourself and your crew. A new industry initiative has been launched by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) that focuses on the impact the yachting industry has on the world’s forests. The initiative encourages clear sustainability goals and open dialogues for more responsible solutions. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263032/image/large-9840fc3a207fde264c781f549845604d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263032">“Yachts are an extreme luxury product, but the industry is also an important sector in the innovation of new and greener solutions for the shipbuilding industry in general,” Kristian Jørgensen, technical advisor at FSC Denmark, stated. “We often see innovation in the areas of engine technology, energy efficiency, synthetic fibres, and the direct impact of different materials on the marine environment. But the time has come to pay more attention to the timber that is used.”Timber is a staple resource for the industry, whether that’s teak decking, masts and booms, or interior outfitting – you’ll be hard-pressed to find a yacht that doesn’t make use of the material in some form. The pact set out by the FSC is committed to set standards for the origin of the timber used, to help mitigate risks against negatively impacting endangered forests and the people that live there. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263015/image/large-b70e3c64fd22b16b99acf0958fc9cea6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263015">“This initiative encourages businesses to set targets which FSC, with its wide-ranging experience, supports by providing guidance and expert advice. Both in terms of the practical implementation of policies and incorporating sustainability on a wider scale than just certification,” Jørgensen continued.The FSC is encouraging the industry to choose products from sustainably managed forests to support nature, biodiversity and social development. Yacht decking has shown itself to be the Achilles’ heel of the industry. The use of natural teak is not just justified by the luxurious look of the timber, but by the extreme technical quality of the wood,” Jørgensen added.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263014/image/large-97788a8e4ebda5592fc5d0ecbde26ac9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263014">The FSC wishes to “push forward to find excellent, responsible alternatives…it can bring together operators and show the market what is possible”. All &nbsp;FSC-certified businesses offering materials or services to yacht building are invited to participate with a supplier’s profile on the website.“When FSC works on the development of policies in a sector, our experience shows that the best way to motivate people is by being clear about the solutions that are easy and close at hand. Everyone can do something immediately by using the existing products on offer. Delivered by the Dutch shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> in 2005, she was launched under her maiden name, Lady Christina. In 2014 the yacht underwent a refit that took place at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/97" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 Barcelona (Company)">MB92</a> in Barcelona. The project involved extending the main aft deck and adding a new Jacuzzi to the sundeck. The original naval architecture and exterior design were completed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>, with the architecture, engineering, production and styling of her 2014 refit provided by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/37" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azure Yacht Design & Naval Architecture (Company)">Azure Yacht Design &amp; Naval Architecture</a>. Her interior is the work of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/67" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zuretti Interior Design (Company)">Zuretti Interior Design</a>. Onboard, the 1,166 GT superyacht can accommodate as many as 12 guests across six staterooms. Performance-wise, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/176" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sea Walk62.0m (203'5&quot;)Oceanco2005">Sea Walk</a> can reach a top speed of 15 knots and has a 4,500 nautical mile range while cruising at 12.5 knots. She is currently listed for sale with an asking price of €34,750,000.

A custom ISA 66-metre superyacht has been sold to a European customer and is set to be built in the Palumbo Superyachts shipyard.
