Though the IYC as we know it was formed just three years ago, the company is one of the most well-known and well-respected brokerage firms in the world. The all-new IYC (The International Yacht Company), with new partners, new management and a new vision that was pointing directly toward the future. Now with 15 offices around the world - including five in the Eastern United States alone - and three years into operations, we catch up with CEO, Stefanos Macrymichalos, to learn more about the ongoing consolidation and what the future looks like in the world of brokerage.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/28162/image/large-fcf50d5b9d3c2a5af272d7342f63d4f2.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/28162"> SYT: You’ve previously noted that the alignment of European and US operations in the new IYC was a sticking point that needed work. How is the alignment between the two operations today?We’re very happy with the progress of the alignment, and we’ve taken big steps in the right direction. For an international company of our size, it’s very important to be able to capitalise upon economies of scale. You have to be able to combine your resources and cannot operate as a solely local operation. You need to think globally because there is tremendous potential in global collaborations between our offices. All of our partners at IYC see the value in consolidating our operations, and we’re confident that we will have completed that process by the end of this year - maybe even sooner.&nbsp;SYT: What are the key differences between the European and US markets which makes it a complex task to align?&nbsp;Yachting is an international business, but you have to take the significance of different cultures, languages and experiences into consideration. I wouldn’t say that there are fundamental differences between US and European markets, though. Our American clients interact just as well with our European brokers and vice versa, but you also need to respect the local trends and provide client support from people that the clients themselves are willing and enthusiastic to work with. We could easily run global operations from the US, equally from one of our European bases, and we would benefit financially from doing so. But you also benefit tremendously by having your operation span over a very broad territory. So the complexity lies in finding the balance between global and local markets.&nbsp;SYT: Is this one of the contributing factors to the reopening of the IYC office in Palm Beach?Yes, the necessity of local expertise is why we made the decision in 2017 to re-open our office in Palm Beach, which has been immensely successful. We brought in some top people, like Michael Rafferty, James Wallace, Katie McPherson, Brandon Rooney, Bob O’Brien and Cindy Ross, who have all been extremely successful just a few months down the line. We would not be hesitant in opening similar offices in other locations which target that particular market, and it makes good business sense to do so.SYT: Are you also looking to open offices in regions such as the Middle East and Asia?It’s a matter of finding the right people. We are always looking for the next opportunity, but our business is driven by the people on the ground. We’re looking for such talent, and if we find those people we would not hesitate to go in this direction. There is great opportunity in Asia though - and I’m sure you’ve been following Australia and the rise of the market there. We can see the charter business picking up in areas like Indonesia, too.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/23679/image/large-bfbf094ce74e10e9a71c84b3b1c6edb2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23679"> SYT: Taking it back to the US, with President Trump in office for over a year now, how is the current political landscape of the US affecting the superyacht market? &nbsp;&nbsp;Definitely positively. There is no question that the stock market is strong. There will be fluctuations, but there is a lot of confidence in the US economy right now. Economy-wise, there is nothing discouraging which would affect the buyer's decision to purchase a yacht. We feel that the state of the economy is driving the decision-making process of buying a yacht.&nbsp;SYT: You’ve previously mentioned that IYC is very much looking for the next smart acquisition or merger. Do you have any merger prospects on the horizon?We are looking into this quite carefully. I think there are a number of good companies that are very compatible with IYC’s vision, but right now we are putting our focus into the consolidation of IYC across all of our current offices around the globe. That takes precedence. But industry-wide consolidation is definitely necessary for the future - and I’m not alone in thinking that!SYT: Indeed, many key players in the business share the view that we need fewer players, but smarter players. How do you envision this consolidation taking place?&nbsp;I think we’ll first see some acquisitions taking place. Clients are actually demanding a lot more from companies nowadays, it’s not just about being good at selling boats. What else can you offer? When the deal progresses, the client will start asking questions about yacht management, insurance, charter management. So, if the brokers’ company is not in the position to offer or to cover those requirements, then that broker and that company are exposed to the competition. Those companies that are specialists in management or insurance, they will start being acquired by companies that lack those divisions. What will drive the consolidation is the location of those companies, and what those companies offer their clients.&nbsp;SYT: You see a lot of brokerage companies focusing on the new build market. Will you also shift focus there?Absolutely. Our business is driven by client demand, and we are here to provide our clients with solutions. We expect to see more orders for new builds. One of the reasons is that quality inventory of second-hand boats is diminishing. There are still some excellent boats on the market which I expect will sell shortly - we had two of such high-quality yachts at the Miami Yacht Show this year: Silver Cloud, the 41-metre twin hull Abeking &amp; Rasmussen, and Silver Lining. Silver Lining is a Christensen built in 2017 and one of the newest yachts, in her size, on the market today. We expect to have a deal on both yachts very soon.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/9576/image/large-1c9be6235d1cd2a84f640d971e72a302.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/9576"> SYT: IYC has made a point of hiring more talent and investing in the digital sphere. How does this translate to real life?&nbsp;You can’t run a successful yachting operation unless you are digital savvy. We have invested and continue to invest in the development our proprietary software, that runs our commercial operations. We have developed an in-house application which we named BLUE. BLUE supports our management charter management and insurance departments. We are also in the final beta testing of our sales support digital platform named DAVINCI, which is actually Michel’s [Chryssicopoulos] brainchild. That application is a sales tool for our sales and charter consultants, which was developed in-house and will go live at the end of February.&nbsp;SYT: In regards to social media and digital marketing, should the industry as a whole up their game?&nbsp;I wouldn’t call myself a marketing expert, but I know what I would be looking for if I was a client. I would be utilising the internet to find as much information as possible on the product that I want to purchase, and social media would play a big role in helping me form an opinion on a product, service or company. I do, however, see a lot of companies in our industry just using social media simply because they think they have to, just for the sake of having a social media presence. I do not think that any of us are using social media effectively. In other words, it is not generating sales - when it should be.SYT: How could proper utilisation of social media generate sales?By creating the right content. That is where companies need to invest more. We need to become the producers of quality, exciting content which we can then use on our social media and other marketing platforms to get the attention of our customers.&nbsp;IYC’s marketing team has been working on this for over a year, and we’re in the process of finalising the format of such content. It will be pushed in the form of campaigns on social media, website and various publications, and interlinked with our advertising, in order to communicate our message to our clients and those who could become IYC clients in the future.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/26827/image/large-9e5d15fec2949b2a5896ee7d81de3795.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/26827"> SYT: How do you envision the further rise of digital platforms affecting the role of a broker?Perhaps it’s not something we will see in the next two or three years, but long term, the role of the broker will be changed because of the internet. All the information that a buyer or charter could possibly need to make a decision is on the internet. But it is not yet organised in a manner that is user-friendly. It is a matter of a couple of years till a digital company will process the information in an intelligent manner and offer it to the public. The effects will be disruptive to the existing yacht sales and charters model and companies will have to embrace change or risk becoming obsolete.SYT: What are some of the key areas of improvement vital to ensure the future of the superyacht industry?&nbsp;I would like to see more regulation in the market. The market - sales and charter - is unregulated. Anywhere in the world, you are not required to have any form of license to be a sales broker. In Europe, if you are in the charter business, you are considered in the same industry as a travel agent, so it is slightly more regulated, but in reality, anyone with a mobile phone and access to the internet can be a broker. That means a lot of brokers are providing advice to clients that hurts the industry. New clients who trust the broker and it turns out that the broker hasn’t done his job properly, those clients end up disappointed and wanting to leave the yachting business immediately.&nbsp;There are companies such as IYC, who have made a substantial investment in yachting, &nbsp;that want the market to move forward and grow in a healthy, sustainable manner. We want clients to have only great experience so they will want to stay in yachting for numerous years. Regulation is required to protect the industry and the consumers. Italian yacht builder Ferretti Group has denied rumours that they had a possible interest in acquiring The Italian Sea Group (TISG).

Italian yacht builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti</a> has announced that the KKCG owned shareholder Azúr a.s. has initiated legal proceedings challenging the appointment of the new board of directors at the company's shareholders' meeting on 14 May 2026.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394210/image/large-3bfd53739fbb59d4d9e5f0968bf4da9e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394210">According to a statement released by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti</a> on 11 June, Azúr filed a writ of summons before the Court of Bologna on 9 June 2026 pursuant to Articles 2377 and 2378 of the Italian Civil Code.Azúr a.s. is a wholly owned part of KKCG’s global business, founded by Czech entrepreneur Karel Komárek. This legal framework aimed to enable them to restructure, while continuing to operate under the supervision of an independent expert.Following this, on 20 April, the Court of Florence granted protective measures for a maximum period of four months, restricting creditors from initiating or continuing enforcement actions against the company’s assets, including vessels currently under construction.The court also confirmed that these protective measures extended to shipowners, which prevented them from terminating their contracts of yachts currently under construction during the proceedings.The Court of Florence has now issued an order upholding the appeals filed by five shipowners which prevented them terminating their contracts. Having spent most of his life around the water, it seems only natural for Luke to have moved into the world of boating. Over time, Luke exchanged sailing for wakeboarding and eventually game-fishing, depending his passion for being out at sea. This passion has remained a constant factor in Luke’s life, deepening even further once he could share it with his own kids.A few years ago, Luke sold his business and decided to step into boating in a more deliberate way by acquiring the 35-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a>, built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/554" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyds Ships (Company)">Lloyd Ships</a> in Australia in 1986. Purchasing her in 2024, the yacht allowed for Luke and his family to explore the Australian coast with more comfort, as well as for them to get to share their passion for the sea. “My two boys are especially big on game fishing, and my daughter is very passionate about snorkelling and marine life”, says Luke. By acquiring <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a>, it allows for the family to share their passions with one another.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396937/image/large-131bb2f788c31defa0822382f533d318.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396937">A three-part refitAs <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a> is from the 80s, she was in need of an upgrade when Luke purchased her. The refit has been phased and purposeful, with 2024 seeing the first of the three phases. The yacht spent September to November at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3255" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard (Company)">Gold Coast City Marina &amp; Shipyard</a> where the bridge was upgraded, soft furnishings replaced and extensive paintwork completed. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388209/image/large-c74eb7958e3e321e611bea0e2d9fee9c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388209">The second phase was centred around remodelling the saloon, with new flooring, carpeting and ceilings, as well as mechanical enhancements. Other upgrades included a beach club installation, complete with an inflatable pool, protective netting and a shaded cabana, which has proved particularly popular with charter guests. Possibly the most meaningful addition during this refit have been the zero-speed stabilisers, “my wife suffers from really severe seasickness, the stabilisers are essential in making the yacht comfortable for my family,” Luke shares.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388210/image/large-06ec6524534531dc1f3ac942dd743803.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388210"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a>’s third and final refit will take place in 2027 and will see an upgrade of the crew quarters. Originally, Luke had hoped to finalise the refit this year, but the yacht’s agenda, both in charter and personal use, is almost fully booked for the calendar year, and Luke wants to ensure there is enough time for the refit: “Our crew is so amazing, I'm super lucky to have what I believe is the best crew.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388187/image/large-fde4622fb25e3e416358ace496ed0104.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388187"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a>&nbsp;juniorYet the 35-metre motor yacht is only half the story. Six months after acquiring the mothership, Luke secured what he describes as Australia’s leading game fishing platform: a custom-built 17.7-metre (58’0”) Assegai sportfisher. Designed specifically for marlin fishing along the country’s east coast, the yacht is equipped with a gyro stabiliser and, more recently, a Furuno Omni Sonar System capable of scanning 360 degrees around the vessel to significant depths, providing a technological edge in a pursuit that still relies on instinct and patience.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396954/image/large-96857bf8151cfcd655d86dc3d061d704.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396954">The reason for acquiring the fishing vessel to cruise alongside the mothership are his sons. Luke shares that “my sons and I have been game fishing together for the last five years or so,” and have even partaken in various competitions in- and around Sydney. “We’ve won a couple of state titles and other competitions,” a hint of pride sits in Luke’s voice. “My children in particular, have a passion for fishing, and I've just shared that passion, and supported it”, he adds.Lukes really enjoys fishing with his family and friends, on a recent trip to the Great Barrier Reef, the Shore Thing 58' landed a 1,223 pound Black Marlin. Yet Luke is quick to note that they’re conscious about the way they fish. “We only catch what we eat; everything else goes right back in the ocean. We’re not hunters, we just fish for the joy of it.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388186/image/large-a98a34adf0095495d9e5f32f36eb458e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388186">The joy of cruisingSome of Luke’s most cherished moments onboard are those with friends and family. “We hosted my 50th birthday onboard,” Luke shares, having chartered the yacht to Whitehaven Beach, located in the Whitsundays, “there were about 40 guests, all friends and family.”&nbsp;Possibly Luke’s favourite memory is the recent Christmas holiday onboard. “Spending time with our family and another family, sitting around and just having deep belly laughs over some beautifully cooked meals by our chef onboard.” Luke describes this as delightful and quite possibly one of the most memorable times onboard. “Your kids grow up so quick, getting to share such a beautiful time together and feeling like, as your kids become young adults, that you can really share laughs and stories. A look inside Luke Geelan's charter fleet: his 35m Shore Thing and the 58' sport fisher chartering around Sydney.

"The joy of owning Shore Thing is getting to share it with others"

<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom Yacht Equipment</a>&nbsp;has earned a prominent position in the superyacht supply chain for its bespoke boarding equipment, platforms, cranes, watertight doors and integrated control systems. Yet the engineering philosophy behind its custom-designed solutions is based on a resolutely modular approach.When Mervyn van der Ploeg was appointed managing director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom Yacht Equipment</a> in 2015, the company was going through a bad patch. It routinely redesigned everything from scratch for each new yacht project, leading to prototype-level inefficiencies and financial strain. A small but telling example is that it used to produce 32 different types of locking pins. Today, through a process of standardisation and modularisation, that number has been reduced to just two sizes.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396743/image/large-c20dda6c39f046eea94eaa71057b9e2c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396743">“Previously, when designing a platform for a yacht, four different locking pins might have been specified, requiring multiple suppliers,” explains van der Ploeg. “Now, we buy 200 locking pins per year in two sizes from a single supplier at half the cost.”The process began by redesigning a prototype passerelle from scratch using a fully modular approach, which then became a template for other equipment. While remaining a supplier of custom equipment, modular components are now reused across <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s product range, reducing design complexity and streamlining production.“A key technical insight came from looking outside the yachting industry,” continues van der Ploeg. “For example, swivel joints originally designed for excavators have been incorporated into our gangways. These components are proven, industrial-grade and standardised, which means we can build highly reliable systems without reinventing core mechanisms.”In the ten years since van der Ploeg joined the company, turnover has more than doubled from €12 million to €25 million, driven by increased efficiency along with larger yachts and a rising demand for integrated equipment.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396739/image/large-d48d0f06ceeb5a00cfda9bafe1c96878.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396739">Make it modularThe spin-off from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s modular way of thinking are innovations designed to maximise open space while eliminating visual clutter. Many of these solutions revolve around relocating drive systems into hinge lines and the platform structures themselves. In one recent project, a large side platform was initially conceived as two separate elements with a manually installed infill piece. While technically feasible, it was operationally awkward. Instead, by introducing an internal hinge drive already proven elsewhere, the entire system was re-engineered as a single monolithic platform. The infill was eliminated, deployment became faster, crew workload was reduced, and the geometry became cleaner.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396744/image/large-4feaec6057dc57f70fe27a2f2a88296b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396744">The Sliding Stairs Access Hatch is another example. Developed in response to a request to optimise the passage from the main deck to the beach platform on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship’s</a> 79.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11677" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Valor79.5m (260'10&quot;)Feadship2025">Valor</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s engineers merged door, hatch and boarding equipment components to create a completely new solution. Essentially, the staircases on each side of the pool form the hatch itself, with half of each staircase retracting into the deckhead like a gangway to provide access to the beach club.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396742/image/large-bd76338bca2c0e5436acede35e416f93.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396742">“This marked a next step in modular engineering for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>,” says van der Ploeg. “Our approach not only accelerated the development process, but also showed how modularity enables flexible, cross-disciplinary solutions without compromising quality.”As both staircases form part of the watertight boundary of the vessel certified by Class, one of the main challenges was ensuring watertight integrity, given the angle at which the stair hatches are installed, as well as aligning the treads between the hatches and the fixed structures. In fact, sealing has become a central issue as stern structures grow more complex – folding, rotating and closing at compound angles. While inflatable seals are often the go-to solution and offer excellent theoretical performance, they also represent a single point of failure. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> typically prefers D-profile rubber seals, which wear gradually, remain locally manageable, and allow temporary mitigation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396741/image/large-cf52ffb86158af5f4ac7a5922058d9b5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396741">“This approach is especially critical for Lloyd’s-certified watertight items such as split transom doors closing at different angles, where corners and junctions between curved surfaces become critical failure points,” van der Ploeg points out.Such solutions highlight how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> has evolved beyond developing hardware to innovating the onboard experience, a strategy that has resulted in multiple patented solutions, from pop-up gangways embedded in the stern platform to protective cabrio covers engineered to fold, stack or nest completely out of sight when not in use. At the last edition of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Metstrade (Company)">Metstrade</a>, the company presented five interactive aft deck models through immersive 3D visualisations showcasing how engineering, design and user experience increasingly converge in the early phases of yacht development.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396745/image/large-b406b1bef2a73b0811b05344a273be7e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396745">Under controlAnother defining feature of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s approach is that its control systems and programming are all developed in-house. Designing these interfaces requires careful attention to geometry, material thickness and fatigue behaviour.Marine-grade aluminium remains the primary structural material, selected for its high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance.
