Some wasted time is, well, wasted time, &nbsp;but for creative people wasted time is never wasted, it is part of the process of innovation. Were you ever told as a child to stop daydreaming? If you were, or indeed remain a daydreamer, then you are very likely a creative type. &nbsp;We have plenty of creative minds at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a> and encourage daydreaming! Mixed with diversity, the output gives us plenty of material to work with. However, to bring this output into focus our &nbsp;Innovate 123 framework is applied to give structure to our R&amp;D strategy.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242545/image/large-1a218def521847d353b6e199c8a9ee29.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242545">Here’s what we have been up to over the past 12 months, as well as what we have lined up for the year ahead.Innovate One is focused on the development of knowledge and advancing those to Thought Leadership. The primary focus of our work in the past year has been on matters related to environmental sustainability, specifically lower footprint, and decarbonisation technologies. We have brought our work on the energy transition into a more structured and forward-looking plan.Having now explored both ends of the energy transition spectrum, via liquid hydrogen and project Aqua in 2019, &nbsp;and more recently advanced hybrid electric via project Kairos in 2021, we are focusing on technologies that enable a compelling and flexible technical platform architecture across the intervening energy transition. Our focus is also expanding beyond the product itself (i.e a yacht) and we are partnering to test the feasibility of our industry taking a lead in the development of future fuel production and distribution. Alongside this we have been looking at the complex topic of all structural materials with respect to sustainability, considering not only the life cycle of materials, but of the product itself as well.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242546/image/large-8cbf02a6cf3c828bb3ce446d7093ad70.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242546">Innovate Two is aimed at our internal engineering processes. How do we execute our work faster, with better quality and continuous improvement for both our people and our output? We look at new tools and ways of doing things. Included within this is a focus on our IT strategy and in the last 12 months, we have invested in new software solutions that allow us to not only be more efficient but critically enable late-stage change to be managed more effectively. Given the multiple partner nature of many of our projects, this demands a highly open, flexible and multi-solution architecture, &nbsp;and as everyone knows change is the only constant in yacht engineering! We employ a broad suite of IT solutions, including many in-house developed applications that are maturing, and like a &nbsp;carpenter’s chisel, uniquely tailored to our own hand and skills.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242715/image/large-1af318b3fd46c1600eb8b4396b4916f9.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242715">Innovate Three is focused on product. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a> is not a manufacturing company, we do not make a &nbsp;physical product, instead, we produce ideas and knowledge. This part of the framework is intended to bring those ideas into tangible focus via the development of technical platforms that offer a &nbsp;compelling advantage. Over the last 12 months, we have developed our Free From Bulkheads (FFB) &nbsp;platform, intended to challenge the status quo of the technical backbone that has evolved in modern yacht development over many decades. We asked ourselves how the user experience could be elevated by creating a technical platform where, above the waterline, there were no evolved constraints, and no watertight bulkheads. Escape to Dubai: The Winter retreat for superyacht enthusiasts

Dubai is establishing itself not only as an ideal destination for superyacht cruises but also as an ideal location for the global yachting community.

Their sister company Bond Support Services has also been providing expert IT, AV and Satcoms operational support, training, and refit services. More recently, their support group has also added Air Quality and HVAC consultancy to its services. We recently sat down with Zeb Robin, Technical Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond TM</a>, to find out more about the developments in the AV/IT sector, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a>’s unique approach to consultancy in the yachting technology sector and to get his expert insight into future developments. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/322600/image/large-ae15e7d8fc078449a566a10c21e4b0e0.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/322600">Technology is developing all the time. How do you future-proof an AV/IT system?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond Technology Management</a> has a fundamentally different perspective than an integrator, as our position working directly for yacht owners means we can drive the specification to ensure systems are future proof. Integrators must bid on specifications, we write them.On a more specific level, we’re always looking 10 and 15 years ahead to make sure the systems we design are future proof, with many completed vessels being the living historical proof that we have been doing it right. Our job often means helping customers to avoid being penny wise and pound foolish when it comes to infrastructure planning. Additionally, we are encouraging yacht owners to simplify and streamline their systems so that long-term maintenance and operational costs are reduced. Starlink was the lynchpin we were waiting for to fundamentally re-invent the onboard AV/IT systems we tailor to owner needs.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/322599/image/large-a561ce10bcb309cc0cab486ec60e95a9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/322599">AV/IT systems are complex and costly. What is your advice for project managers or owners' reps tasked with choosing an integrator and speccing a system?&nbsp;We respectfully challenge the assumption that AV/IT systems must be complex and costly. &nbsp;There is a clear trend towards simplification which we at bond are leaning into, and it is possible today to simultaneously shrink systems and future proof them. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Returning to the question, one should first make sure a good team is creating the system specification packages. If you are considering bringing expert consultants onto your team like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond TM</a>, then scratch the surface to ensure their merit and avoid cronyism. It takes time to build a good specification, and cutting corners at early stages can be costly in the end.Next, there has been a downsizing trend in the last decade which has allowed us to return space back to the interior, but it relies on good communications with the owner in terms they can relate to. If you ask an integrator or anyone really who doesn’t know the client, you will get over-spec’d systems containing everything plus the kitchen sink. However the systems we’ve been working with our customers to specify are smaller, cooler and more capable than those of the past, because customers today are rejecting a lot of the complexity which in the past was under-utilised or never used at all. &nbsp;Armed with a solid specification, one can then of course go to tender. If done right, you will get good apples to apples offers, and you can select your suppliers based on price and compliance to specification.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/322598/image/large-1cc1724a3788481a08127e53899b4a72.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/322598">Some superyachts now have a full-time ETO (Electro Technical Officer) on board. Generally speaking, is there sufficient training for crew to run and maintain the AV/IT systems properly? A well trained and knowledgeable crew will always make the guest experience onboard better, zero doubt. For over a decade, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a> has offered a variety of technical and cyber training courses to help crew enhance the skill set they bring onboard.Furthermore, our push to simplify and streamline the AV/IT systems means that these systems simply cause fewer headaches for the crew to begin with. The interesting caveat however is IT system administration. Switches and Wi-Fi over the next decades will always be required, as will the need for IT specialists who are experts in keeping the network secure and performant.Our Support Services group has been delivering expert technical assistance to crew for over 15 years, exactly to reinforce the crew and ensure they have access to all skills necessary to keep their yacht running smoothly.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/322165/image/large-9baeaf85af25d3b0b9d19bf5328f94bf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/322165"> In an increasingly connected environment, how important is it to have a cybersecurity management plan when designing an onboard IT system?A Cyber Security Management Plan is a vital operational matter that crew must attend to; it is not a tangible thing one can design into a system or pay cash up front for. If experts have designed the IT system to adequate standards using sound best practices while not cutting important corners, then it will be possible to operate it safely and securely. However a system packed with the most exotic security technologies in the world will amount to nothing if it gets hacked due to being operated and maintained incorrectly, or because the crew was not trained adequately to understand and avoid cyber threats.If the worst does come to pass and there is a cyber incident onboard, the crew need to have a good plan they can follow to ensure they immediately do the right things to mitigate harm and/or loss, while quickly bringing the vessel back to a secure state. This is what good cyber policies and plans can do.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a> serves the Cyber needs of yachts at every level. Our build management group ensures systems are designed and delivered to robust standards. &nbsp;Our service and support group maintains those systems at a secure state and helps crew to craft world class cyber policies that are well tailored to their needs. Lastly, our training team routinely conducts Cyber Awareness courses for entire crews to help everyone level up their operational security. Daily vigilance is needed in the face of the threats out there, and a well-prepared crew is the first and best line of defense. Fast connectivity at sea can be elusive. Are 5G, Starlink and other low earth orbit satellites taking over from traditional VSAT technology?This is not elusive any more since virtually every yacht on the sea has already installed Starlink. This constellation of satellites has fundamentally changed everything. Since 2014 when Greg Wyler and Elon Musk first started planning a Low Earth Orbit constellation called WorldVu, and when O3B went online, we have been preparing our customers to be ready for low and medium earth orbit systems. &nbsp;We are therefore proud to have had SpaceX as a guest on our stand at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2022">Monaco Yacht Show 2022</a> when they first launched their marine service.It’s not nice to hear for legacy providers, but the fact is that conventional VSAT is now only a backup service, and one that will be in decline for the next decade. On the new-build side, we are now working on the first generation of yachts that will not have any large satellite radomes, resulting in a stunningly sleek exterior. &nbsp;Some in the industry made mistakes over the last decades, recommending unripe technologies that were obsolete before they were even installed. However, we at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a> steered our clients to avoid this error and can today assure anyone reading this that those days are over.Internet at sea is now abundant and more affordable than ever, and as more services come online to complete with Starlink in the next years, it will only become more so.AV/IT upgrades are commonly requested during refit or maintenance periods when time is limited. What do crew and shipyards need to be aware of? Firstly, if the vessel has good infrastructure (quality ship run cabling, well built and cooled technical racks, etc..) then absolute refit costs will be much lower over time. It costs a bit more upfront to build good infrastructure, but it pays off in savings *forever*, while increasing the longevity and reliability of all systems. &nbsp;Therefore, if the vessel’s infrastructure is poor, with intermittent faults and outages, overheating equipment, etc.., it may be a wise long term investment to improve said infrastructure. It might not provide any new flashy capabilities for guests, but it can pave the way for more robust and affordable systems in the long run.Next, to get the best prices and ensure a smooth refit period, start developing your scope of work early and be realistic. Instead of trying to do everything at once, we have seen a trend with several customers whereby they prefer to develop an evolutionary upgrade strategy for their vessel with us. By breaking the upgrades into discrete chunks of work, it can result in lower costs and higher quality outcomes which don’t require the vessel to be out of service for any one long block of time.Lastly, logistical aspects such as hardware lead times, labor logistics and access to refit shipyards should not be underestimated. When these things go wrong they can cripple a refit, so they are best considered well in advance. &nbsp;&nbsp;

This standard is vital for ensuring that yacht maintenance and refit operations meet high safety and quality standards, thereby enhancing customer satisfaction and reducing environmental impact.Challenges in obtaining ISO certificationsA primary challenge for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/681" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Marine (Company)">Monaco Marine</a> was ensuring consistent understanding and application of the ISO standards across all shipyards while maintaining the flexibility needed to adapt to various situations. Whether managing projects for 20-metre yachts or 80-metre vessels, the performance measures needed to be uniformly applied.&nbsp;Achieving this required addressing differences in local practices, management styles, and expertise. Workshops, collaborative tool development, and tailored key performance indicators (KPIs) were implemented to harmonise these elements within a unified approach.&nbsp;A second significant challenge was the practical integration of the management system into daily operations. The system had to be both simplified and reflective of real-world conditions to stay effective. Reflecting on the origins of the Velarca 135 concept, Sami revealed that the idea emerged on a sunny day in August 2021 in Helsinki’s Kaivopuisto Park. Accompanied by an advertising agency and several bottles of champagne, the team were spurred by a bold vision. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242232/image/large-8fd4ddc1c0153b0949334960523201b4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242232">“We knew that motor yachts dominate the superyacht market with over 90 percent market share, which also means they produce most of the greenhouse gas emissions. So, we decided there and then to start selling sailing yachts to the motor yacht clientele,” Sami explained. This marked not only the birth of Velarca 135 but also the formation of a business model that would allow <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> to enter the superyacht market, without a designer or shipyard already in place.One of the cornerstones of the Velarca 135 design is sustainability, a principle that Sami was determined to uphold without compromising on luxury. “Sustainability is a tricky word,” elaborated Sami. “Many luxury products have a longer lifespan because they are valuable, beautiful, and timeless. When asked about the design process, Sami recounted the strategic decisions that guided the yacht’s development. “We consulted well-known yacht brokers in the Mediterranean to understand what their customers prefer in terms of yacht size and amenities. We also prioritised safety and simplicity, ensuring that even a less experienced crew could manage the yacht with ease.” The design was then handed over to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/164" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Beiderbeck Designs (Company)">Beiderbeck Designs</a>, who were given full artistic freedom. “In my opinion, the result was not only quite clever and practical, but also very pretty,” Sami added.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216494/image/large-d23ae9f9a161e73b660e7a5c5bafcac6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216494">The Isola Corvus vision and challengesAs a relatively new player in the superyacht industry, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> brings a fresh perspective, heavily influenced by Sami’s background in offshore racing. “We dared to do what we wanted without asking too many questions,” Sami explained, reflecting on the fearless approach that has driven the company forward. One significant innovation influenced by Sami’s racing experience was the rig design. “I was never a fan of the Chinese gybes, as the boom had the potential to cause damage or injury by slamming from side to side when jibing; so I wanted to eliminate the risks of this happening completely. The Velarca rig is simply a boomless, rope free, two masted solution, with two rolling and self-tacking jibs on each mast and a third jib in an inverted position between the two masts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216499/image/large-e6b6b2919ec59af2b44f6642ef4ec58f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216499">Despite their innovative spirit, the journey hasn’t been without challenges. “We didn’t have a designer or shipyard partner in the beginning, both of which are must-haves to even launch a design,” Sami admitted. However, a fortunate connection with Finnish superyacht hydraulics entrepreneur Nadine Proctor opened doors, leading to a partnership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/164" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Beiderbeck Designs (Company)">Beiderbeck Designs</a>. “By January 2022, the design was ready to launch,” Sami recalled. Can you give us some insight to what is involved?Hull form design can range from the simple to the complex in any vessel, superyacht or otherwise. How simple or complex one makes it really depends on the driving aims of a number of outcomes that need to be achieved in the final design. These typically include propulsive efficiency, comfort (seakeeping), construction considerations and practical alignment to the design intent of the overall vessel / its functionality. It is possible to address all of these in a simplistic manner, or equally with a high degree of engineering effort. Also, in the real world of commerce, time, budget and other resources play a role.In general, for a superyacht there is no one overall factor that dominates to the detriment of others. Some projects have a bias one way or another, but achieving an optimised result that delivers the very best result across all of these outcomes demands a rigorous process. Whilst not complex per se, it requires a high degree of insight via experience and grounding in a clear strategic approach to leverage the best result, when set against real-world commercial constraints.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325411/image/large-824189ecde9fb6967bcd09e46988355a.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325411">It must be daunting to start with a blank sheet of paper, where do you even begin?Any notion of a blank sheet of paper is a misnomer. While every project results in a unique hull form that is specific to that design, one’s ability to optimise quickly, effectively in terms of results and with low technical (and therefore commercial) risk, means that we always begin via examination of our hull form family. By family I mean the many hulls that have been tested and / or proven in service, and the accompanying insight derived from the experience in their development. For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a> that spans about thirty years of development reaching back into our heritage in specialised commercial vessels as well as superyachts. Marry to this a collaborative approach in development, with an experienced shipyard partner(s), and also model test institutions, the sum of the collective knowledge that can go into a new hull form is potentially very significant.&nbsp;It would be easy to select a ‘parent hull’ and simply manipulate and develop to achieve a good result on a new project, that is a fairly straightforward process. We take a more strategic approach aimed at the progressive development of a hull form family. That progressive development ensures that we are, over each successive generation, investigating, pursuing and employing technical developments that embody an engrained evolution of knowledge, data driven outcomes, and insight.There are exceptions to this. In more ‘blue-sky’ projects where novel or experimental fundamental technology is being explored then a ground up approach where you “challenge everything” is taken, but this is not suitable for conventional projects.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325412/image/large-7cf075d26588c70a0a160061ddd73616.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325412">In this evolutionary approach could the use of Artificial Intelligence and other computational methods be employed?The short answer to that is yes. The advancement of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) over the last half century (yes that long) has meant that the exploration of strategic evolutions has become faster, more reliable and more cost effective, certainly in the regime of propulsive efficiency. It has advanced the state of the art into progressively smaller steps because the state of the art is now very mature. The use of other computational methods encompassed by AI have and are bringing a new dimension to the state of the art. Ultimately they will serve to enable us to find new innovations, which in a mature state of the art environment, become progressively more demanding in time and resources to find. I personally think the real task for any AI, is to challenge the biases and paradigms that are an inherent part of being human. AI can help challenge and expand these paradigms by presenting data-driven perspectives that may differ from traditional viewpoints, potentially leading to innovative solutions and advancements. I do not prescribe to the idea that AI will make the human redundant, it will accelerate our abilities and augment our creativity.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325410/image/large-b2b16fcaaaffa7251bf58f189c4dc3bd.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325410">How would you describe&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a>'s hull form family and what developments are you working on?Our family is broad and diverse, and whilst it has a core focus on large displacement hulls, it also encompasses smaller families with different areas of focus, leveraging much from our heritage in other marine markets.&nbsp;Central to the family tree is our ‘Type-D’ series, now in its 10th generation with one keel of over 110m currently under construction. From that central family other variants are in development for different areas of the market in which we are active, our ‘Type-De’ series, specifically optimised for the use of azimuthing thruster propulsors (pod) with one keel over 110-metre currently under construction and a 130-metre in development. Our Type-L family addresses a smaller region of the market, namely the sub-85 metre load line in the 80/90 metre range, with the latest 80 metre variant having its keel laid this summer. All of these families have evolved around a blended optimisation of efficiency and comfort, adapting for progressive improvements in propulsor and stabilisation technologies.Our Series-UE (Ultra Efficient), as was initially created to underpin the LIFE platform upon which the 109-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5963" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bravo Eugenia109.0m (357'7&quot;)Oceanco2018">Bravo Eugenia</a> was built. We have continued exploration of this family looking at downscaling and leveraging further efficiency gains to enable more innovative engineering layouts, in turn enabling a more creative canvas for the design community. We have a new platform to launch based on the 3rd generation of UE Series, that is quite unusual and should enable design USP to be created in the market.Finally we have been actively developing smaller families, such as that which underpins our 50m Spitfire in Turkey, that is derived from mature and proven patrol vessel designs, yacht support operations derived from offshore oil and gas supply designs that have proven operation in very demanding conditions. Finally our Type-S series is a very refined and elegant design family incorporating integrated propulsion systems, the first 45 metre variant of which has been delivered from Turkey. This demands an approach that takes a broader range of variables into account, and therefore needs more elegant and multifaceted optimisation techniques. SES Yachts: A 50-year journey of custom crafted excellence

&nbsp;Based in Bonn, Germany, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6279" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ultimate Catamarans GmbH (Company)">Ultimate Catamarans&nbsp;</a>is revolutionising the market with motor catamarans that combine cutting-edge technology with bespoke design. "Originally, I was looking for a motor catamaran for my personal use. After exploring different motor catamarans and test-driving some of them, I couldn't find one that met my expectations," he shares, "I'm 1.95 metres tall, so from my point of view most of the catamarans are much too small to be comfortable, especially on long voyages.” Wuttke, therefore, took matters into his own hands.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325169/image/large-395eb329754ee0c2222a95115f313e15.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325169">"I started conceptualising my own ideas and commissioned several yacht designs," Wuttke recalls. The team ultimately took shape, with Olaf Steckstor joining as Director of Development and Sales. The company's flagship models—Spaceline 88, 120, and 150—offer a minimum ceiling height of 2.20 metres and guest cabins starting at 25 square metres. “Our design also offers a minimum of 25 square metres for guest cabins even on our smallest models,” stresses Wuttke.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325163/image/large-3894c726aae3ba8bbad6c4e1bc8eaef1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325163">Spaceline design is a philosophy focused on optimising and efficiently using space. Moreover, the crew are housed across four double cabins situated below deck, while the captain has a cabin beside the wheelhouse.&nbsp;As for her exterior areas, the aft cockpit on the main deck boasts an eight-seater table, along with an expansive relaxation area, fitted with a C-shaped sofa and sunbathing area. By walking down the side stairways, guests arrive at the beach area that can double in size once the stern hatch lowers flush to the central section, thereby joining the indoor part of the beach club. The offer envelopes were opened on Monday, 16 September, in Rovigo at the office of accountant Maria Clotilde Castellani, a judicial commissioner appointed by Judge Benedetta Barbera of the Rovigo Court.President Luca Zaia of the Veneto Region expressed satisfaction with the recent developments, stating, “This marks the closure of an important phase in the process, which has involved concerted efforts with social partners and the management overseeing this procedure. Initially, there was little optimism. However, we now see promising potential in the new industrial proposal. As outlined during the regional discussions, this proposal plans for a complete break from previous management practices, aims to enhance productivity, and presents an ambitious strategy for the company's revival. This includes retaining the current workforce of 48 employees and further expanding their numbers and skills,” stated President Zaia.“However, it should be noted that the process is not yet complete,” continued President Zaia. “In the coming days, the creditors will need to cast a favourable vote on the compensation proposal, which promises much greater satisfaction than in the event of bankruptcy. The Region has provided technical assistance and training courses to support this transition phase. The current temporary management has performed optimally thus far and must continue to ensure production continuity until the transition to the new company, whose structure is still being defined.”

Images of the yacht are yet to be revealed, but <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> describes the yacht as having “an unforgettable profile” and “broad expanses of glass.”Due to her expansive use of glass, the interiors of C are illuminated by natural light, to create a fluid living space for guests onboard. The exterior design of C also blurs the lines between her decks, with her fore and aft sections offset by a half-level to create a smooth transition between each space.Other design innovations onboard C are the partially enclosed lower deck sea lounge that can be used at anchor or underway, a beach club with sea-level dining, a duplex owner’s suite and an articulating crow’s nest rising from a private observation deck.In terms of exterior deck spaces, C is equipped with a pair of infinity-edge hexagonal pools, which aim to match the shapes of her various seating arrangements and atrium. “There’s nothing rough about this diamond in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>’s concept collection,” explained <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>. “As with all <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> concept yachts, C is completely researched and buildable.”&nbsp;C will also showcase Feadship’s next evolution in adaptive technology, with a command centre positioned on the lower deck between her crew area and beach club. This fully digital operation and navigation hub includes the latest in intelligent situational awareness technology, with cameras and data fusion.“This layout and the smaller single-level engine room, supported by the fuel cells, maximises prime owner and guest space, creating more value to an owner within the same gross tonnage,” added <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/285554/image/large-ee1e4321b5100826f2f5097767414c53.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/285554">Based on her hull shape and fully-electric propulsion system, C is an evolution of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/35229" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="New Feadship future concept Breathe unveiled in Monaco (2010-10-06 00:00:00 +0200)">Breathe</a> concept announced at Monaco Yacht Show 2010 and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>’s 83.5-metre superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5598" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Savannah83.5m (273'11&quot;)Feadship2015">Savannah</a>, which was launched in 2015.With her inline contra rotating propellers and electric propulsion system, C is predicted to be 30 percent more efficient than a typical 75-metre yacht with dual shafts, propellers and rudders. As a result, the improvements to her underwater profile will mean less wake when cruising, contributing to smoother movement, improved efficiency, and less impact on surrounding waters.Like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>’s 118.80-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8907" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship van Lent 821118.8m (389'9&quot;)Feadship2024">Project 821</a>, C will draw 100 percent of her power needs from fuel cells, which will run directly on methanol and be accompanied by lithium-metal batteries. She will be able to reach a top speed of 17 knots with additional battery power to the DC electrical grid and a cruising speed of 14 knots using her fuel cells.&nbsp;Additional power can be generated passively by two pairs of wave-actuated fins that fold out from the hull aft of the anchors. Estimates are that in a one-metre sea, energy generated by their movement will meet one-third of C’s hotel load.&nbsp;

Rolls Royce and the Azimut Benetti Group have established a partnership under a four-year framework agreement.

This article has been written for&nbsp;SuperYacht Times by James Roy, Managing Director of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral Naval Architects</a>. &nbsp;When I was at school there was one subject that I really did not enjoy: Chemistry. I was drawn more to the world of physics and mechanics. Fast forward and having qualified and practiced as a naval architect for 26 years I find myself almost studying chemistry again – urrgh!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/233872/image/large-fafa9c273bd17f795a5a0b48f3b7c0bc.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/233872">So what is the chemistry that is challenging us? The answer is simple, carbon, or rather how to avoid it. The responsibility for answering this question must no longer be viewed as the domain of others, it is becoming a question that many professions are having to play a role in answering, whether they like it or not.The job of engineering superyachts to meet specific performance criteria for noise, speed, seakeeping or any other functional performance criteria is relatively simple. Being able to guide and advise clients on project strategy and technology choices to avoid obsolescence, deliver on sustainability aspirations, and avoid future regulatory traps is more complex, but in many ways an increasingly important skill.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/232627/image/large-8e0b7b2f24203564af9552e8d730348c.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/232627">(above: Lateral's widening research is now extending into land-based production of hydrogen)The question of carbon, and the skills to guide future choices, is not confined to our own domain of yachts / ships and the marine industry, it impacts all aspects of humanity, wherever energy is used. As stated in Vaclav Smil’s book on Energy &amp; Civilisation, “Energy is the only universal currency; it is necessary for getting anything done.”Humanity has undergone previous energy transitions, however the one that faces us is the hardest yet, as we are forced to downscale in terms of energy density, no one solution will fit all and we must adapt across all aspects of our lives to different solutions. The innovation needed to deliver these solutions is vast and we are now faced with a bewildering choice of strategies and technologies to pursue, some mature but many embryonic and of low readiness level at scale.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/232628/image/large-7492c6f2407892b823f366a9e8dde131.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/232628">Unfortunately there are no absolute answers as to which is correct for the application to superyachts. Many if not most will fail (such is the nature of innovation). How therefore do we become skilled in guiding our clients in the choices available to them? Even with on-point geopolitical insight, encyclopaedic knowledge of technical development across multiple industries, and access to significant innovation capital there is significant risk in making the wrong choices in the development of a high value asset such as a superyacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231512/image/large-e4a799cd097a2004ed12c9ceff461830.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231512">Part of the solution is to go back to school, thankfully (for me) not to the subject of chemistry, but science in general, and the notion of a hypothesis; a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.Part of our research, development and innovation programme in the area of energy system architecture is based on formulating hypotheses based on the limited absolute evidence and facts we have about the future, together with varying probable outcomes. Through a long term and repetitive programme of technical platform development we progressively test our hypotheses against the ever-changing real world of energy transition. In this way, step by step we are refining our strategies and independent and unbiased insight about how best to guide our clients in making the right choices.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/233871/image/large-29fce98953dcafa409a10cfd99039b45.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/233871">A key characteristic to avoid is that of bias. Where we believe in our own ideas (or indeed those of others) without any level of scepticism we are likely to be blinded by bias. This will lead us to derive a solution that is unlikely to be fit for the long term.To remove bias demands that we shed our technical egos, we need to stop engineering everything over and over again in the name of ‘bespoke’ and invest in progressive development. We also need to shift our perspective of how a yacht should be configured. The ultimate ‘yacht of the future’ will be very different in proportions, form and technical backbone than those of today. And through innovation it will also do more, while consuming less.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/228573/image/large-3184c9dd9a5827dfb4a306bc80cf062f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/228573">These are exciting times to be a naval architect, the opportunity to lead rather than follow is in front of all of us, we just need to transition our range of skills.
