Some wasted time is, well, wasted time, &nbsp;but for creative people wasted time is never wasted, it is part of the process of innovation. Were you ever told as a child to stop daydreaming? If you were, or indeed remain a daydreamer, then you are very likely a creative type. &nbsp;We have plenty of creative minds at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a> and encourage daydreaming! Mixed with diversity, the output gives us plenty of material to work with. However, to bring this output into focus our &nbsp;Innovate 123 framework is applied to give structure to our R&amp;D strategy.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242545/image/large-1a218def521847d353b6e199c8a9ee29.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242545">Here’s what we have been up to over the past 12 months, as well as what we have lined up for the year ahead.Innovate One is focused on the development of knowledge and advancing those to Thought Leadership. The primary focus of our work in the past year has been on matters related to environmental sustainability, specifically lower footprint, and decarbonisation technologies. We have brought our work on the energy transition into a more structured and forward-looking plan.Having now explored both ends of the energy transition spectrum, via liquid hydrogen and project Aqua in 2019, &nbsp;and more recently advanced hybrid electric via project Kairos in 2021, we are focusing on technologies that enable a compelling and flexible technical platform architecture across the intervening energy transition. Our focus is also expanding beyond the product itself (i.e a yacht) and we are partnering to test the feasibility of our industry taking a lead in the development of future fuel production and distribution. Alongside this we have been looking at the complex topic of all structural materials with respect to sustainability, considering not only the life cycle of materials, but of the product itself as well.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242546/image/large-8cbf02a6cf3c828bb3ce446d7093ad70.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242546">Innovate Two is aimed at our internal engineering processes. How do we execute our work faster, with better quality and continuous improvement for both our people and our output? We look at new tools and ways of doing things. Included within this is a focus on our IT strategy and in the last 12 months, we have invested in new software solutions that allow us to not only be more efficient but critically enable late-stage change to be managed more effectively. Given the multiple partner nature of many of our projects, this demands a highly open, flexible and multi-solution architecture, &nbsp;and as everyone knows change is the only constant in yacht engineering! We employ a broad suite of IT solutions, including many in-house developed applications that are maturing, and like a &nbsp;carpenter’s chisel, uniquely tailored to our own hand and skills.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242715/image/large-1af318b3fd46c1600eb8b4396b4916f9.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242715">Innovate Three is focused on product. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a> is not a manufacturing company, we do not make a &nbsp;physical product, instead, we produce ideas and knowledge. This part of the framework is intended to bring those ideas into tangible focus via the development of technical platforms that offer a &nbsp;compelling advantage. Over the last 12 months, we have developed our Free From Bulkheads (FFB) &nbsp;platform, intended to challenge the status quo of the technical backbone that has evolved in modern yacht development over many decades. We asked ourselves how the user experience could be elevated by creating a technical platform where, above the waterline, there were no evolved constraints, and no watertight bulkheads. The system can be applied with a spray gun and is also rollable.High Solid Base Coat /Clear Coat (BC/CC)The crucial advantage of the Base Coat /Clear Coat (BC/CC) system lies in the last, extra layer – the clear coat. "The application of this system is clearly in the hands of experienced painters and is suitable for special requirements," Thomas explained. The BC/CC build has the greatest Hiding Power and exceptional Depth of Image (DOI) of all three systems. The clear coat provides excellent protection and outstanding durability making it appealing to superyacht owners. Our Base Coat/Clear Coat is also frequently used in the professional sailing yacht sector. The acrylic topcoat has a faster drying time, offering less surface area for dirt particles to adhere to the still-wet paint film. This topcoat is also slightly softer than a Polyurethane or BC/CC system, allowing for a very good polishability once dried. “With Acrylic Topcoat X, we have a product on the market for a good two years that plays on the level of the other two systems in terms of gloss level – even surpassing them in some cases," commented Thomas. Acrylic Topcoat X is frequently used in Europe as well, specifically Italy, Greece, and Turkey, with an excellent foothold in the US with smaller yacht users. The refit and painting conditions in these locations are also not necessarily cleanroom quality, and sea winds create particles in the air that could harm the wet paint. Over the past decade we have built a comprehensive support structure in-house which encompasses marketing, business intelligence, tech development, PR and events, in-house video production (which almost no one else has), and strategic partnerships. These marketing teams consist of more than 30 people on staff, and include an intelligence team dedicated to data research. I really don’t know of any other brokerage firm that has invested so much in these categories, and it has definitely helped us to differentiate ourselves with our clients and win more and more of our competitor’s business.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/35342/image/large-bdee32c15b4a067e6002354accf83f97.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/35342">The brokerage's acquisition in 2021 by industry titan <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1312" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MarineMax (Company)">MarineMax</a> has certainly given the company the financial firepower to make this transition more quickly, but there was always a focus on data analytics and marketing, even prior to the takeover. “Many brokerage houses have just one or two employees who provide their yachting data, but it's generally a slow and outdated manual process that is rarely capable of finding the right yachts first – something which is one of the most important roles expected of a broke by their clientele. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> however, we have our ‘Deep Data department’ that sources data from all over the world through various custom developed applications as well as significant human resources, making sure our brokers have the most accurate and acute information in the industry, as well as having it first.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219126/image/large-206b550a22422538d353d3e1d1b64044.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219126">“If you strip it down to its basic tenets, the world of yacht broking is an information and facilitation business,” says Ziriakus. “The value of data within the yachting industry can be pivotal to a company’s success.” This could not have been more evident than in recent years, when major market high, such as 2021 and early 2022, saw scares supply and very few superyachts of pedigree were hitting the market. N&amp;J’s investment in data has enabled them to ride the sector wave with massive success, including reporting recently that its brokers sold 36% more yachts on average per broker than its closest competitor in 2022, selling a yacht almost every 48 hours during 2022.When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> isn't in the news for its extensive catalogue of sales, the brokerage house is stealing the limelight with partnership after partnership, and for Ziriakus this has also been one of the greatest growth assets for the company. “The strategic partnerships team has been working hard to build deep, multi-year partnerships with other brands that go far beyond simply sharing a logo or sponsoring events. It has truly been a business development drive to build powerful PR campaigns, events and activations that work directly with UHNW client segments. While this isn’t in and of itself particularly revolutionary, the work the production team does with former broker David Seal is.Seal runs a YouTube channel for the company called Yachts for Sale, and shoots video content for the brokerage firm. The true value lies in the business development opportunities that arise from coverage on such a popular channel. “These infotainment-style videos are a fantastic asset,” explains Ziriakus, “not only because we create cool and interesting content, but because we visit shipyards, talk to clients and experts, and that content directly brings in leads to both the brokerage and the charter departments. Patrick Marine: How a boutique yacht company cornered the market and built a strong global presence

There is a deft art to creating bespoke one-of-a-kind tenders, especially as they come in such a variety of shapes and sizes. The demands placed on these smaller vessels are just as high as those of the motherships – in some instances, even more. Versatility is fed directly into their DNA and no builder knows this better than the Australia-based <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal International</a>.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal International</a> was founded in 1982 and has delivered more than 75 fully custom tenders to world’s largest motor yachts. The 11.25-metre Open Sports limousine tender elegantly skims across the water with grace and comfort, thanks to her ingeniously engineered hull and two punchy <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo</a> D6 400 horsepower diesel engines.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> furnished the custom Topaz Convertible with a cream, rounded settee that wraps a heavily varnished coffee table. Befit for a tender belonging to such an outstanding mothership, the Topaz Convertible is suave, sophisticated and a point of pride for owner and guests to embark from when perusing the treasures onland. Her crowning feature though is undoubtedly her hardtop convertible roof – a world’s first for a tender of this size – which allows for usage in any weather condition. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256232/image/large-8988d9422027cffa438b371dd20a6e71.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256232">19m Octopus Dive TenderAt 18.8-metres the custom-built Octopus Dive Tender is one of the largest power boats to complement a superyacht. With a penchant for speed and a requirement to reach some of the most remote and daring dive locations in the world, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> had a challenge. A challenge that a ready-made solution could never cater to. The marketplace for ready-made solutions might be thriving, but it’s not perfect.Australia’s resident designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/98" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sam Sorgiovanni Designs P/L (Company)">Sam Sorgiovanni</a> oversaw her design – and most definitely delivered. The Octopus Dive Tender is refined, lavish and brimming with amenities expected on a yacht, not a tender. She can carry as many as 10 guests, who can kick back in utmost comfort in her plush saloon, and she has a generous aft deck for seamless access to the water. Thanks to twin <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1409" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MTU (Company)">MTU</a> engines, the Octopus Dive Tender can reach speeds in excess of 40 knots.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256228/image/large-e97a5f6fe4b00aa7785de9dd3a193030.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256228">10m Secret Limousine&nbsp;Many superyachts have a low tender transom garage, which is typically used to store a RIB or water toys. But the space can also be utilised for a more luxurious limousine tender – you just have to be clever. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> had to keep the tender’s height under two metres, which makes an enclosed aft normally impossible. To counter this, an electronically operated hardtop was fitted so once out the garage the shell roof can be opened to welcome the owner and guests onboard.The 9.8-metre Secret Limousine tender is fitted with twin D4 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo</a> diesel engines that deliver a top speed of 48 knots. Topaz), is a 12-metre custom-built Cargo Catamaran. This tender was commissioned to serve the yacht, acting as a private taxi, a dive platform and the vessel to supply fuel and cargo to and from shore. To facilitate dive expeditions, the Topaz Catamaran is equipped with a modular unit fitted to the front deck with an 18+ dive bottle capacity. Her bow was also customised to aid guests with seamless sea access.&nbsp;The 12-metre Topaz Catamaran is equipped with a pair of D6 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo</a> Diesels coupled to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5769" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hamilton Jet (Company)">Hamilton</a> HJ 292 water jets that deliver a top speed of 35 knots. She’s incredibly versatile and is handy for fishing excursions, equipped with all necessary paraphernalia. Over the last decade and a half, the Italian designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6168" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Francesco Struglia Design (Company)">Francesco Struglia</a> has built a career working with some of the top names in the yachting industry. Cutting his teeth with the inimitable <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/105" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zuccon International Project (Company)">Zuccon International Project</a>, Struglia has learnt from the best since his very earliest days in design, cultivating a childhood passion for drawing into a formidable career as consultant to one of the world’s largest shipyards. Today his studio is focusing its energies on the superyacht sector, and in addition to his yachting , Struglia is also building a name for himself as the designer of bespoke and production yachting furniture. It was very inspiring.” After his period at the Italian studio, Francesco turned to Northern Europe and joined the ranks of the famous <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/55" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omega Architects (Company)">Omega Architects</a> under Frank Laupman, who Struglia believes is the very best in the industry within the 50 metre segment. In the Netherlands, Struglia had the opportunity to combine his passionate and romantic Italian design approach, with an effective, creative, and time scheduled real Dutch workflow. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256236/image/large-292dd35fccc32701de1aba2b4176b31b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256236"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256234/image/large-407f33146083d390d9d8c9189e3c1bd1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256234">It wasn’t long after his tenure at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/55" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omega Architects (Company)">Omega</a> that Struglia found himself back in Italy and working in the Style Department Team of Giovanna Vitelli at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a>. Working closely alongside the technical teams, Francesco became closely entrenched within the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> styling, and after many years of work, with his new own studio established, he was given the opportunity to pitch for a new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> motor boat series, the series which later became the Verve, styled in its entirety by Francesco himself. The Verve has now sold more than 100 units, far exceeding any expectations Francesco, or <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a>, had for the model.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256246/image/large-91ba3e6484039c80652e30d433423f3b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256246"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/248918/image/large-6ac433b20523fe5f7812fa6f4e2f3675.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/248918">Then in the late 2010’s, the studio was contacted by Giovanna Vitelli and asked to work on the start of a new series, signing the first model this time for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>. “It really began in an informal way, building that strong relationship with the shipyard over a number of years meant that they had faith that I was capable of distilling the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut-Benetti</a> mentality and design ethos into a new model. We worked closely with the Benetti team on what became the Motopanfilo series, which was always intended to be a classic motor yacht series.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/248906/image/large-8ef9f449ef54f2a5e58f662937bea44d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/248906">Eight hulls of the 37-metre Motopanfilo series have now been sold, with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10815" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="eh²36.8m (120'9&quot;)Benetti SpA2022">Eh²</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10892" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hayat36.8m (120'9&quot;)Benetti SpA2022">Hayat</a> both launched in 2022. The yacht was Struglia’s first solo superyacht design and it's no surprise that the model has been such a success, with his deep and intimate understanding of the shipyard’s styling. In fact to this day, the studio works closely with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut-Benetti</a>, consulting the designers, both in-house and externally, on new models. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/248911/image/large-16bb8aaf031363dd431d75c3c908a53b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/248911">It is clear in speaking to Francesco that he has a true form-equals-function mentality when it comes to design, something he has no doubt learned over a career with some of the industry's top designers. Removing the superfluous and distilling his designs right down to include only what is necessary means that his lines are characteristically minimal, flowing and uninterrupted. It's this same design ethos that the studio takes to all of its design projects, working both on industrial projects and designing bespoke furniture.In 2020, the studio entered into a design partnership with ARAS Italia, an Italian-pedigree company working with artisans in the leather industry and which has an excellent portfolio in the automotive industries. The goal of the partnership was to design two driving seats for the yachting sector and a bar stool for the luxury yachting furniture sector and the first three products were presented by ARAS at the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="METSTRADE - 2022">2022 METSTRADE</a> to much applause from the industry. This article has been written for&nbsp;SuperYacht Times by James Roy, Managing Director of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral Naval Architects</a>. &nbsp;When I was at school there was one subject that I really did not enjoy: Chemistry. I was drawn more to the world of physics and mechanics. Fast forward and having qualified and practiced as a naval architect for 26 years I find myself almost studying chemistry again – urrgh!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/233872/image/large-fafa9c273bd17f795a5a0b48f3b7c0bc.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/233872">So what is the chemistry that is challenging us? The answer is simple, carbon, or rather how to avoid it. The responsibility for answering this question must no longer be viewed as the domain of others, it is becoming a question that many professions are having to play a role in answering, whether they like it or not.The job of engineering superyachts to meet specific performance criteria for noise, speed, seakeeping or any other functional performance criteria is relatively simple. Being able to guide and advise clients on project strategy and technology choices to avoid obsolescence, deliver on sustainability aspirations, and avoid future regulatory traps is more complex, but in many ways an increasingly important skill.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/232627/image/large-8e0b7b2f24203564af9552e8d730348c.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/232627">(above: Lateral's widening research is now extending into land-based production of hydrogen)The question of carbon, and the skills to guide future choices, is not confined to our own domain of yachts / ships and the marine industry, it impacts all aspects of humanity, wherever energy is used. As stated in Vaclav Smil’s book on Energy &amp; Civilisation, “Energy is the only universal currency; it is necessary for getting anything done.”Humanity has undergone previous energy transitions, however the one that faces us is the hardest yet, as we are forced to downscale in terms of energy density, no one solution will fit all and we must adapt across all aspects of our lives to different solutions. The innovation needed to deliver these solutions is vast and we are now faced with a bewildering choice of strategies and technologies to pursue, some mature but many embryonic and of low readiness level at scale.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/232628/image/large-7492c6f2407892b823f366a9e8dde131.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/232628">Unfortunately there are no absolute answers as to which is correct for the application to superyachts. Many if not most will fail (such is the nature of innovation). How therefore do we become skilled in guiding our clients in the choices available to them? Even with on-point geopolitical insight, encyclopaedic knowledge of technical development across multiple industries, and access to significant innovation capital there is significant risk in making the wrong choices in the development of a high value asset such as a superyacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/231512/image/large-e4a799cd097a2004ed12c9ceff461830.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/231512">Part of the solution is to go back to school, thankfully (for me) not to the subject of chemistry, but science in general, and the notion of a hypothesis; a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.Part of our research, development and innovation programme in the area of energy system architecture is based on formulating hypotheses based on the limited absolute evidence and facts we have about the future, together with varying probable outcomes. Through a long term and repetitive programme of technical platform development we progressively test our hypotheses against the ever-changing real world of energy transition. In this way, step by step we are refining our strategies and independent and unbiased insight about how best to guide our clients in making the right choices.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/233871/image/large-29fce98953dcafa409a10cfd99039b45.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/233871">A key characteristic to avoid is that of bias. Where we believe in our own ideas (or indeed those of others) without any level of scepticism we are likely to be blinded by bias. This will lead us to derive a solution that is unlikely to be fit for the long term.To remove bias demands that we shed our technical egos, we need to stop engineering everything over and over again in the name of ‘bespoke’ and invest in progressive development. We also need to shift our perspective of how a yacht should be configured. The ultimate ‘yacht of the future’ will be very different in proportions, form and technical backbone than those of today. And through innovation it will also do more, while consuming less.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/228573/image/large-3184c9dd9a5827dfb4a306bc80cf062f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/228573">These are exciting times to be a naval architect, the opportunity to lead rather than follow is in front of all of us, we just need to transition our range of skills.
