Miami-based designer Luiz DeBasto and Dutch yacht builder Oceanco have teamed up once again, this time to reveal a new motor yacht design named Cosmos. The 90-metre project is groundbreaking in terms of glass used as a material to form the exterior of the yacht, with the pinnacle being a glass dome-shaped observation lounge on the upper deck.
Known for his new-world designs that are also buildable on a large scale, Luiz DeBasto drew Cosmos in much the same way and Oceanco’s engineering department ensured that this is indeed the case. The impressive dome structure, for instance, was carefully analysed in order to guarantee its feasibility. “The glass dome, while it looks simple, is extremely complex in order to comply with all the regulations,” comments DeBasto. The glass panels themselves are UV protected and can be dimmed or coloured to enhance guests’ mood.
Inside the Sky Deck, DeBasto laid out a flexible space where guests can quite literally dine under the stars from the comfort of a completely enclosed luxurious space. “This provides an interesting tension between being adventurous and being safe,” he adds. The initial layout suggests this space could be perfect for an out-of-this-world social experience like few other yachts would be able to offer.
