After discussions between designer and client, where we look at all the decorative aspects, comes the trickiest phase of the project: finding a functional, sustainable solution to fit the instructions we received.For the RJ 130’ Class project our client the design imperative was to create an ambiance that imbued &nbsp;softness, elegance and a heightened perception of luxury. To create this we opted for a heavy use of natural materials, such as bamboo, virgin and merino wools and silk.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243971/image/large-e2d5cf01817a17c04b0bfaf5467d0924.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243971"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantiere delle Marche (CdM) (Company)">CdM</a>’s RJ 130 is a full-custom yacht, is this a typical project for&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6441" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Luxury Carpet Studio (Company)">Luxury Carpet Studio</a>?&nbsp;Almost all of our designs are custom; although in some instances we do draw inspiration from our past collections, as we have quite a large portfolio. That being said, we also modify and customise each project we work on to create unique characteristics. Sometimes it’s the colour, the pattern, or the overarching themes. Other times we alter material choices to meet the specific needs of our customers.&nbsp;Nothing is standard, everything is made ad hoc, in close co-operation between us and the client. These partnerships are the best part of our work as they allow us to grow together, with examples of excellence in the sector. The development of green, sustainably manufactured products has been the natural consequence of this concern. The system can be applied with a spray gun and is also rollable.High Solid Base Coat /Clear Coat (BC/CC)The crucial advantage of the Base Coat /Clear Coat (BC/CC) system lies in the last, extra layer – the clear coat. The BC/CC build has the greatest Hiding Power and exceptional Depth of Image (DOI) of all three systems. The clear coat provides excellent protection and outstanding durability making it appealing to superyacht owners. Our Base Coat/Clear Coat is also frequently used in the professional sailing yacht sector. The acrylic topcoat has a faster drying time, offering less surface area for dirt particles to adhere to the still-wet paint film. This topcoat is also slightly softer than a Polyurethane or BC/CC system, allowing for a very good polishability once dried. “With Acrylic Topcoat X, we have a product on the market for a good two years that plays on the level of the other two systems in terms of gloss level – even surpassing them in some cases," commented Thomas. Acrylic Topcoat X is frequently used in Europe as well, specifically Italy, Greece, and Turkey, with an excellent foothold in the US with smaller yacht users. The refit and painting conditions in these locations are also not necessarily cleanroom quality, and sea winds create particles in the air that could harm the wet paint. I really don’t know of any other brokerage firm that has invested so much in these categories, and it has definitely helped us to differentiate ourselves with our clients and win more and more of our competitor’s business.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/35342/image/large-bdee32c15b4a067e6002354accf83f97.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/35342">The brokerage's acquisition in 2021 by industry titan <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1312" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MarineMax (Company)">MarineMax</a> has certainly given the company the financial firepower to make this transition more quickly, but there was always a focus on data analytics and marketing, even prior to the takeover. “Many brokerage houses have just one or two employees who provide their yachting data, but it's generally a slow and outdated manual process that is rarely capable of finding the right yachts first – something which is one of the most important roles expected of a broke by their clientele. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> however, we have our ‘Deep Data department’ that sources data from all over the world through various custom developed applications as well as significant human resources, making sure our brokers have the most accurate and acute information in the industry, as well as having it first.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219126/image/large-206b550a22422538d353d3e1d1b64044.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219126">“If you strip it down to its basic tenets, the world of yacht broking is an information and facilitation business,” says Ziriakus. “The value of data within the yachting industry can be pivotal to a company’s success.” This could not have been more evident than in recent years, when major market high, such as 2021 and early 2022, saw scares supply and very few superyachts of pedigree were hitting the market. N&amp;J’s investment in data has enabled them to ride the sector wave with massive success, including reporting recently that its brokers sold 36% more yachts on average per broker than its closest competitor in 2022, selling a yacht almost every 48 hours during 2022.When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> isn't in the news for its extensive catalogue of sales, the brokerage house is stealing the limelight with partnership after partnership, and for Ziriakus this has also been one of the greatest growth assets for the company. “The strategic partnerships team has been working hard to build deep, multi-year partnerships with other brands that go far beyond simply sharing a logo or sponsoring events. It has truly been a business development drive to build powerful PR campaigns, events and activations that work directly with UHNW client segments. With the carefully selected and powerful partners that we have, for example NetJets and Airbus, we have created an integrated programme to offer clients a wider array of services, and it has been a phenomenal success at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">Northrop &amp; Johnson</a>.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/35345/image/large-3227dab3db722f3690b5e19a306f889e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/35345">The multifaceted approach <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> employs is just as strong in its marketing. Content creation is a leading strategy for the brand, and it employs not just one but five videographers and editors who shoot high end productions of yachts all over the world. While this isn’t in and of itself particularly revolutionary, the work the production team does with former broker David Seal is.Seal runs a YouTube channel for the company called Yachts for Sale, and shoots video content for the brokerage firm. The true value lies in the business development opportunities that arise from coverage on such a popular channel. “These infotainment-style videos are a fantastic asset,” explains Ziriakus, “not only because we create cool and interesting content, but because we visit shipyards, talk to clients and experts, and that content directly brings in leads to both the brokerage and the charter departments. What gulets are to Turkey and Croatia, dhows are to the United Arab Emirates. Wrought with tradition with builds dating back aeons – the dhows are an integral part of UAE culture and heritage and are still widely used today. This tradition has spurred on a strange phenomenon: wooden dhow-inspired superyachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262478/image/large-608b9781f319d0cefba1295d8e9e0f70.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262478">The first dhows that danced across the Red Sea and Indian Ocean were much thinner than they are today. Over the years they’ve stretched and expanded to offer more volume and more stability, but originally they were incredibly slender, packed with goods, darting from port to port.Fisherman and pearl divers had different requirements and needed space to carry their equipment and daily catches. Importantly, they also needed space for more people. These beamier boats are a common sight across the UAE and many are so engorged, swallowing entire restaurants to offer fine dining experiences for hundreds of guests at any given cruise.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262477/image/large-c292da7f2fb1c4adcbbbe9af10bd0569.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262477">The wooden superyachts infuse the two traditions. “The DNA of these superyachts relate just as much to the original dhows as they do to the wide beam and voluminous modern ones,” Mahmoud Itani of IR Yachts told SuperYacht Times. “In this region, onboard space is really important as people want to go out with large groups of friends; usage is very different to Europe.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263196/image/large-96a02755f154b9edeb1b5b06b318e78d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263196">"These yachts are hard to trace as they’re custom-built for individual clients and rarely go on the market – or to any shows, for that matter. “I’ve been attending and organising the Dubai International Boat Show for more than 10 years now, and I can’t remember ever seeing a single superyacht on display that was built out of wood,” Itani reflected.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262487/image/large-807cf5d601fc605e401b8d6626a29e8a.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262487"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262484/image/large-ab44a56f02225eb532c9637ba2f5eaf7.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262484"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262485/image/large-675093ccd1a8dc465dee62fd80015b59.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262485">It makes sense too, as these yachts are rarely – if ever – put up for charter, kept in private use away from the public eye. Boat Shows aren’t relevant for the shipyard’s marketing purposes either, as these wooden dhow-inspired superyachts are invariably single units and quite often the only one built and delivered by that particular shipyard.“There are a few boat builders in the UAE that would build one of these yachts, but the design rarely comes from their in-house team. After meeting their own design team, the client will then approach a shipyard in either Al Jadaf or, more recently, Dubai maritime city,” Itani explained. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262497/image/large-ea48a1afc0b6a7773c138f1d503e36bb.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262497"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262494/image/large-c54ef33378f581c876b5bc98b37142df.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262494">We believe there could be as many as 10 in and around the region, the largest of which is on the market listed with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bush & Noble (Company)">Bush &amp; Noble</a>. The unnamed 50-metre Full Custom wooden superyacht was delivered in 2020 and undertook a maintenance appointment last year, which included a complete repaint with a high gloss clear coat. She’s constructed with a teak hull and GRP superstructure, which has then been clad with teak for that traditional look and feel. Henderson Marine International designed and engineered her.With a beam of 10.56, she’s a metre and a half wider than the average 50-metre motor yacht built after 2018. And once onboard it’s the first thing you notice. She’s cavernous and has been styled with the more familiar trappings, all sourced from Italy at “no expense spared,” as central agent <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bush & Noble (Company)">Bush &amp; Noble</a> explain. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262479/image/large-3b074acd794dfdc3701713a1994606a3.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262479">The main saloon is home to many seating areas for socialising, a breakfast bar, two screening areas and a formal dining area. She can also host five crew in five cabins.When asked about the buying profile for this superyacht, Bret Noble of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bush & Noble (Company)">Bush &amp; Noble</a> anticipates the most attention from Qatar. "There are many well-built traditional dhows in the region," Noble explained. "Qatar is really the number one region for these boats. But they're also not an uncommon sight in and around the UAE. The 50-metre Full Custom superyacht is unique though and interesting for the Australasian market."&nbsp;The second largest known wooden superyacht is the 47.55-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4428" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tiger47.55m (156'0&quot;)Unknown2009">Tiger</a>, delivered in 2009 and currently berthed in Abu Dhabi.
