For our latest Entrepreneur in Yachting feature, Francesca Webster sits down with her friend Mariangela Oliveri to discuss her luxury linens business <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a>. Established in 2011, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> has evolved into one of the premier sustainable linen companies for the yachting and aviation sectors over the past decade. We explored its inception, the challenges Mariangela faced in establishing a sustainable business before sustainability became a trend, and her conviction that quality and service are the keys to success in the superyacht industry.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331994/image/large-c16f54ec63cb14a14d02590c1d28c25c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331994">What was the origin of the business and what is your background?&nbsp;Throughout my business degree my goal was to set up a company within the realm of luxury materials so I approached every class during my five year degree as an opportunity to develop the business plan. In fact, the original concept for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> was the final essay at university, so although the company was founded in 2011, it had really been with me for years before then.&nbsp;After university, I decided that before establishing my own business, I needed to learn how to work within a team and to grow in practical experience. It felt presumptuous to assume I had all the answers without appropriate training, so I joined a company in Asia for five years importing luxury furniture design manufacturers. During that time I learnt how to work with different people, from various backgrounds and cultures and it taught me the skills that you need in order to manage your own team and your own clients. It was an incredible learning experience and gave me the opportunity to work in a varied and complex environment, and after five years I returned to Italy and began the research process for the business. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331999/image/large-21757ca123fc9e37a78d60e699868147.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331999">Why did you decide to focus on high-end, sustainable linens?&nbsp;I’ve always had a deep passion for quality and for me Italian linen is the supreme material with an amazing heritage, however the sustainable approach was not in my original concept. I wanted to offer the lineage of linen with a modern twist, but I didn't yet know what that twist was. I am an observer by nature and when I returned from Asia in 2011 sustainability was beginning to become mainstream, with eco foods in supermarkets for example and the demand was increasing . Sustainability was also becoming a buzz word in the media and I could see that it would only increase in significance, so I decided that founding the business with a truly green heart would set <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> apart from the rest of the market. That is when the struggle really started.At that time it was impossible to find refined sustainable fabrics. Everything on the market was rough and completely unsuitable to luxury linen products. That was a period of frustration and of almost giving up because once I'd set my heart on the sustainable element of the business there was no way that I was going back. It became absolutely central to my belief in the company.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331998/image/large-5f21af1057a168c58caf722e89ffeb08.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331998">How did you overcome that hurdle?I met with the owner of Italy’s largest fabric producer, and after an eight hour meeting managed to convince him to invest in a certified sustainable production line. He said, “If I can't convince you to change your mind about this approach in eight hours, you must be able to see something I haven't seen yet, so we will try it.” That was an amazing moment. Two years later, he had certified the entire production line of the company and had become one of the first sustainable fabric suppliers in Italy.&nbsp;So your investment in creating the business sustainably delayed the foundation of the company – why did it become so important to you?The answer is twofold. The first is ethical, but the second was strategic. I could foresee that sustainability would become an important factor of businesses in the future and fortunately reality has shown that my instinct was right. The decision to create a certified business from the ground up also means that everything we do is done in a sustainable way – our materials, work standards and business practices are routinely reviewed to ensure that we are maintaining the certified standards. When I see companies today launching ‘sustainable lines’ I know that it is greenwashing. You cannot be sustainable in one collection, it is a hypocrisy, either you believe in it and practise it throughout your business, or it is a gimmick to sell your products.&nbsp;What are some of the challenges you’ve faced since establishing the business?Well, aside from the initial challenge of finding the suppliers, we have faced many challenges in the past 13 years. Our first line was a kids bed linens collection because I thought mothers would be sensitive to the sustainability aspect, but it really didn't go as expected. I invested a lot of money and almost went broke. I realised that the market wasn’t ready for the sustainable topic to be the main focus of the business, so I developed the business model focusing on the concept of Italian quality, with an international service approach.&nbsp;Italian’s make wonderful products, and Made in Italy still carries a lot of weight internationally, but Italian companies are not good at marketing, customer service etc. So I decided to focus a lot of investment in our service offering, utilising my international experience to create something different and that is how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> came to the yachting industry, where quality and service are most recognised.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332000/image/large-90fdc1caae0a58aa21af956ebab21436.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332000">When did yachting linens become the focus of the business?In about 2013 we decided to approach the yachting sector, making our first sales in 2014 and pulling the company out of some challenging financial times. Then things progressed quickly because we secured <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut-Benetti</a> as one of our first clients. In fact when I went to Benetti to pitch our business, they had an array of linen suppliers on show, but by the end of our meeting we had secured our position as the exclusive supplier for the shipyard and that really established our relationship with the yachting sector.&nbsp;What do you think they saw in your products? What set&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a>&nbsp;apart?The quality of every single detail. Every piece that carries our label is checked by hand right down to the stitching because I want my team to be proud of every piece. We will take as long as it takes for it to be perfect and I think that sets us apart from other companies. I have a huge amount of respect for Hermes, which I believe is the only true example of true luxury brand. They continue to make their bags by hand, they aren’t interested in speed or numbers, they are focused on quality and that is my focus for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331993/image/large-f12efeba8de238fae187efa8cfdede06.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331993">How have you maintained that level of control and what do you think are some of your keys to success?With a lot of saying no. The success of a brand is more in the no’s than the yes’s. We’ve been approached by retailers offering display space, but you will never find <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> products on the shelf, we’ve also been approached to create products for under famous brands. Our know-how is precious to me and we will never supply our products under someone else’s label.The company is also completely self financed, so there are no investors telling me to cut budgets and increase production at the sacrifice of quality. I will make no compromises and that is really important to who we are. I also think that the most important thing when you’re an entrepreneur is that you involve everyone in your dream. From your suppliers, to your employees, you have to make them believe and in order to do that, you have to truly believe in yourself and in what you're doing. The main saloon is framed by structural columns clad in recycled nautical sailcloth, while her dining area features a sculptural table with a gear-shaped metal base and a wood top inlaid with pressed tobacco leaves. Dubbed the “madame office”, it’s a celebration of colour and individuality. Aviation blue features prominently across her &nbsp;leather desk accessories, the raffia wallpaper-lined bookcases and the detailing on the bespoke desk chair. One twin guest stateroom features a smart sliding bed system, allowing it to convert into a double room when required. Pieter van Geest founded <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1356" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Geest Design (Company)">Van Geest Design</a> in 2006 alongside his wife, Tracey Canavaggio, following a career shaped by experience at established studios. Before establishing his own practice, he worked within the sector as a captain, owner’s representative and designer, bringing perspectives from both the operational and design sides of the industry to his own studio.In this interview with SuperYacht Times,&nbsp;van Geest discusses his entry into the industry, the background that has shaped his approach, and how he views current shifts and future directions in yacht design.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/389299/image/large-0b618dce188f345bf9dd86e1284f7fbd.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/389299">From industrial design to yacht designFrom an early age, Pieter van Geest developed a passion for sailing, spending much of his childhood on the water with his family. He later studied industrial design, but began to question whether that path fully aligned with his interests. “During my studies, I realised I was drawn to a more bespoke form of design,” he said. “In industrial design, you are typically creating products for a broad market, whereas yacht design allows you to work closely with an individual client and design specifically around their needs and ambitions.” It was that personal dimension, he recalled, that steered him towards the yachting sector.Early in his career, van Geest joined <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/52" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ron Holland Design (Company)">Ron Holland Design</a> in Ireland, moving from smaller 15 to 20-metre sailing yachts to larger projects. “At Ron Holland, I was introduced to bigger yachts,” he said, noting that his earlier experience had been focused on smaller yachts that were “more into the production”. Among the early projects he was involved in was the 28.04-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/60" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alloy Yachts (Company)">Alloy</a> sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6062" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tawera29.0m (95'2&quot;)Alloy Yachts1995">Tawera</a> ex Catalyst. During this period, he also worked with several European shipyards, including Trintella in the Netherlands, Westerly Marine Construction in the United Kingdom and Bowman Yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/3210/image/large-3dc774b05e5e4259a69b92162a7e5b48.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/3210">Operational experience and a return to designAfter gaining experience across design studios and shipyards, van Geest became project manager at Trintella for a sailing yacht under construction. The vessel, owned by an American client and overseen by a professional management team, introduced a new level of coordination within the yard. “It was next level for the shipyard, and I was responsible for it,” he recalled. “It was not really about designing, but much more about building it and client communication.”The commission subsequently led to further work in England, before an unexpected change of course. When the owners asked whether he would consider taking on the role of skipper in the United States, he agreed, spending two years as a professional captain on the East Coast. In retrospect, he sees the period as adding a practical dimension to his design background. “Having been a captain makes you realise that not everything you design actually works,” he said, particularly on smaller sailing yachts where issues of access and maintenance quickly become apparent. “You have to get your hands dirty and go into the builds and fix stuff.”Following his time at sea, van Geest returned to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/52" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ron Holland Design (Company)">Ron Holland Design,</a> where he was involved in the design of the 77.6-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/270" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vosper Thornycroft (Company)">Vosper Thornycroft</a> sailing yacht Mirabella V, later renamed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="M577.6m (254'7&quot;)Vosper Thornycroft2004">M5</a>. It was during this period that he met his future wife and business partner, Tracey Canavaggio.The pair subsequently established <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1356" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Geest Design (Company)">Van Geest Design</a> in 2006. In the early stages, they worked alongside <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/533" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rémi Tessier (Company)">Remi Tessie</a>r in Paris while building their own practice in parallel. “She focuses on the interior part of the company and I am more of the exterior part,” van Geest said, describing a division of roles that has remained central to the studio’s structure.Looking back, he regards this sequence of roles as formative in shaping his approach to yacht design. “It was a good path,” he reflected, noting the difficulty of establishing a studio immediately after graduation. “It’s a hard start to become a design firm. Increasing headroom while preserving the yacht’s character required careful structural recalibration and close coordination between engineering and design disciplines.The project also involved integrating modern systems into a classic platform. “The challenging thing was the technical integration of modern equipment,” he said, reflecting on the complexity of updating infrastructure without compromising the vessel’s identity. Such projects, including bespoke light fittings and integrated cinema experiences, reflect a broader industry movement towards multi-sensory design.” he recalled, adding that technological advances have since made such integrations more accessible.Alongside technological experimentation, van Geest observes a sustained preference for restraint in interior design. “It’s minimalist in its look,” he said, describing an approach that prioritises uncluttered and uncomplicated environments. For him, the yacht exemplifies a clarity of design that has become increasingly rare.Reflecting more broadly on what constitutes good design, he acknowledges the difficulty of defining it. “It’s a very hard question,” he said. For van Geest, strong design is characterised by clarity and coherence, where the proportions and lines feel intentional rather than arbitrary. What drew you to the sailing yacht and what has kept you around? I took over as captain in 2016, and since then we’ve been around the world, raced in regattas, and built up a charter following which I’m very proud of.&nbsp;I’ve loved to be on the water for as long as I can remember, and through university I taught Yachtmaster courses, so it was a natural step to work onboard sailing yachts. Additionally, their itineraries tend to be more appealing: large sailing yachts have a vast range allowing us to travel further afield and explore more remote areas. Sailing yacht clientele and owners are also different, with a more adventurous approach that can make working onboard very fun.&nbsp;Throughout the years, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4147" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perseus^360.0m (196'10&quot;)Perini Navi2015">Perseus^3</a> has provided a mix of experiences with racing, cruising off the beaten track, and charter, which have been engaging for all the crew. I’ve also been fortunate to work for an owner whose thirst for discovery and bold sense of adventure have truly defined the experience onboard. I have an incredible crew and the experience they deliver to guests has seen some of our charterers return for more - something we love! Having a varied programme helps us keep things exciting for guests. As a captain, it means extensive forward planning. We are always looking ahead to ensure we have everything in place for the trip, charter, or regatta we’re embarking on; even if that means planning two years in advance. Aside from myself and the crew, we have a team of rigging, and professional race crew behind us, and between us all, we plan throughout the year to get the best performance from the yacht. This year we’re going into the regatta with new sails and a few changes to our rating and we’re expecting to gain a few more knots of speed, so I’m looking forward to testing Perseus^3 against the other competitors. Aside from that aspect, bring together yachts, owners, guests and crew, and it’s guaranteed to be a good time. The thrill of racing and the atmosphere of a regatta are something I think everyone should experience, and we always enjoy making sure our guests have a memorable week. The comrade of the race crew is truly something to look forward to.Currently the countdown is on for the St. Barth’s Bucket Regatta! For us, it’s about outdoing ourselves. We know the speeds we achieved in our last regatta and we’re on track to beat them. It was an incredible experience for both owner and crew, taking us from the beaches of Brazil to the winds of Patagonia, rounding both Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope, exploring the Pacific, voyaging through Australia, to Indonesia and Madagascar and finally South Africa, before making our way to the Mediterranean.&nbsp;We were exclusively private while the owner explored the world over the last few years and came back onto the charter market at the end of last summer. We are just rounding out our charter season in the Caribbean now, and we’re looking forward to the guest trips we have lined up for the Mediterranean later this year. Being back in our old stomping grounds of the Mediterranean and Caribbean has been fantastic - visiting our favourite spots and discovering new ones. We find we have a balance between the two cruising grounds, plus some charter guests who are interested in joining us in both places, which we love; but there’s a strong possibility we’ll be venturing out further afield again soon; watch this space!Guests who are attracted to sailing yachts are often outgoing and adventurous; our charter guests tend to give our watertoys and diving gear a good workout. We have lots of guests onboard who are familiar with motor yachts but who want the thrill of heeling over on a large yacht; something I’m very happy to deliver. We’ve been to some incredible places. Right now, we have the glaciers of Patagonia, the culture of the South Pacific, and the West Coast of the USA in our rear view. We have cruised through Australia and spent time amongst the 74 islands of the Whitsundays. From there, we ventured through Komodo and Raja Ampat where the diving, the scenery and the people left an indelible impression on us all. In Madagascar we were greeted by the people of our bosun’s village; a truly touching experience for the crew to see him welcomed home, and that was before the welcome the yacht was treated to! The dancing, the food, meeting the people who had shaped our bosun and enjoying time with his family; it was one of the most emotional points of our journey around the world. But it was the destination after that which has become a hugely significant moment in my sailing career, personally. Leaving Madagascar, the yacht crossed to South Africa where I relieved my co-captain, Darren Rennie and began the journey down the coast and into Cape Town. Twenty eight years ago I was teaching people to sail on Cape Town’s harbour, and dreaming of working on superyachts, so to sail back into the same harbour was a full-circle moment for me. From the outset, we shared an interest in how interior spaces are experienced, rather than approached purely as decorative exercises.After graduating, we moved to Amsterdam, where I gained experience across high-end residential and hospitality projects while working with a range of established design studios.Timothy: For our graduation project, Veronica and I worked in the same group and chose to develop a yacht design concept that explored both exterior and interior design. The project later gained industry visibility and marked our first experience collaborating on a yacht-related concept at an early design stage.After graduating, we both worked at Marcel Wanders Studio in Amsterdam before our professional paths diverged. I went on to focus primarily on product design, particularly furniture, while continuing to engage with exterior yacht projects in parallel. Over time, this included participation in several international competitions for emerging designers, which helped inform a more integrated approach to design, considering exterior and interior as part of a coherent whole from the earliest stages. A key step professionally was joining <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/926" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design (Company)">Sinot Yacht Architecture &amp; Design</a>, which played an important role in shaping my understanding of the yachting sector.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/385433/image/large-be57e7278dcc06803e9266f4e21f4134.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/385433">What prompted the decision to establish the Touch Studio?Veronica: We had long shared the ambition to establish our own studio, which we did in 2020, and were conscious of first gaining experience across different areas of design within the same broader field. Over time, it became clear that the moment felt right to take that step.From the outset, our focus has been on understanding how spaces are used and experienced by the people who inhabit them. Rather than working to a fixed stylistic language or following prevailing trends, we approach each project through the lens of the client’s requirements and the specific context of the space.Our process begins with an emphasis on use, movement and daily routines, allowing the design to develop as a coherent narrative rather than as a collection of isolated elements. Architectural decisions, furnishings and detailing are considered together, with the aim of creating interiors that feel consistent and considered throughout.Timothy: By the time we decided to establish the studio in Amsterdam in 2020, we had both spent several years building experience across different parts of the design sector in the Netherlands, which gave us a clearer sense of how we wanted to work. In practical terms, the studio initially focused more heavily on residential projects, allowing us to establish ourselves and build momentum during the first few years.&nbsp;From there, our work gradually began to shift back towards yachting, initially on smaller vessels, before moving relatively quickly into larger projects. Today, our core focus sits around the 50-metre range, slightly above and below, which has become the segment where we are most active. Our involvement began with the yard’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7552" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nolimits (Company)">Nolimits</a> Collection, where we worked on the interior design framework for the semi-custom range spanning the 30-metre, 37-metre, 37+-metre, 45-metre and 45+-metre models. Working closely with the client during the art selection process, colour and contrast were used to introduce identity and energy throughout the interior. These more expressive elements are layered onto the calmer background, allowing the spaces to develop a clear sense of character without becoming visually overwhelming.Veronica: What made <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13688" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gemini45.1m (147'12&quot;)Nolimits2026">Gemini</a> particularly rewarding was the opportunity to work across the project with a consistent and integrated approach. Architectural elements, furnishings and material choices were developed together, allowing the interior to be shaped as a coherent whole rather than as a series of separate components.By designing both the spaces and the furniture pieces, a consistent design language was maintained throughout, contributing to an interior that feels balanced and clearly resolved. This alignment between architecture, furniture and materiality helped establish a sense of continuity and clarity across the yacht.Project Berserk 47 was developed closely around the client’s requirements and personal vision. From the outset, the brief drew on references associated with Zen environments and garden spaces, with an emphasis on balance, restraint and clarity in the overall composition.The interior was structured around a clear narrative, using a controlled palette of natural materials including refined wood finishes, textiles and natural stone. These elements were applied consistently to introduce warmth and depth, while maintaining a calm and composed atmosphere throughout the yacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/385432/image/large-4569aaacc02e91fd0672b39a64ab26de.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/385432">Timothy: That philosophy informed a number of specific design decisions. One example is a bespoke hand-painted wall treatment featuring Japanese koi fish motifs, which reference the concept of yin and yang. The artwork unfolds vertically along the high-gloss blue staircase, creating a visual link between the decks and reinforcing a sense of movement through the interior.Nature was also a central theme, but approached pragmatically. Rather than introducing living plants, which can be challenging to maintain onboard, we worked with an Italian specialist to incorporate preserved botanical elements. These include Japanese-style trees housed within enclosed display structures, allowing the presence of natural references without the operational demands of a traditional onboard garden. In this respect, it can be compared to residential projects, where architecture and interior design are distinct disciplines that rely on continuous dialogue. Elements such as garages, equipment storage and tender spaces introduce a distinctly operational character, while the interior brief often calls for a more refined environment. Managing that contrast is a central part of the design process.More broadly, this tension is reflected in current design tendencies. Increasingly, yacht interiors are moving towards cleaner lines, larger surfaces and a more restrained formal language. Compared with the more articulated compositions of the past, recent projects tend to prioritise clarity and continuity between structure and surface. It is not necessarily aligned with our own design language, but we are often drawn to projects that carry a strong sense of history and craftsmanship. Developed under the direction of founder and mechanical engineer Allen Jones, the concept challenges conventional monohull thinking by re-examining how large yachts move through the water. SuperYacht Times sits down with Jones to discuss the evolution of the Wavepiercer, the lessons of timing and innovation, and his hopes for the future of yachting.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/383075/image/large-7dba62d25658df24992a1bda5848b455.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/383075">Building backgroundJones has always worked to advance transportation-related technology: from amping up carwash technology from brushes to being touch free, to founding a yacht business focused on new build concepts and refits. Yet the journey hasn’t been linear, after retiring at a young age, Jones’ entrepreneurial heart couldn’t sit still. Heading up to Whangarei, about two hours north of Auckland, Jones inquired with the port about purchasing a plot of land in the harbour. The idea was simply to keep busy and build a few boats for fun. Port management said, “we won’t sell you a piece, but we will sell you all of it”. After some negotiation, the deal was sealed and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="New Zealand Yachts Ltd (Company)">New Zealand Yachts</a> was established.After its founding in 2000, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="New Zealand Yachts Ltd (Company)">New Zealand Yachts&nbsp;</a>built the very first composite Wavepiercer superyacht: a 35.05-metre motor yacht named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/549" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="My Spirit35.05m (114'12&quot;)New Zealand Yachts Ltd2005">Spirit</a>, with interior and exterior design by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ken Freivokh Design (Company)">Ken Freivokh</a> and naval architecture by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/508" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bakewell-White Yacht Design (Company)">Bakewell-White Design</a>. While there was enthusiasm for the unorthodox concept, the market didn’t seem quite ready for. A ‘hybrid’ hull design wasn’t a much-explored concept yet and it would take another twenty years before the market was curious for the next generation of a hybrid hull superyacht: the Wavepiercer.Over time, the Wavepiercer concept continued to evolve in parallel with shifting market priorities, setting the stage for its return in a new context.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/383072/image/large-37d134693502d5eba243e8935bf4434e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/383072">WavepiercerJones explained that “the Wavepiercer technology provides a safe, fuel efficient platform with incredible sea keeping performance aligning perfectly with the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="New Zealand Yachts Ltd (Company)">New Zealand Yachts</a> mission of creating ‘The Ultimate Ocean Experience’.” Introducing a hull form not previously used in superyacht design, combining performance and the efficiencies of traditional catamarans with the look and feel of a monohull superyacht. Rather than adopting a conventional layout, the concept emerged from a reassessment of how catamarans are typically configured, “you can make them very wide as often happens, but we really didn’t see how that could work with a pointed bow monohull superstructure. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="New Zealand Yachts Ltd (Company)">New Zealand Yachts</a> we connect with the technology of the hulls, but not the technology of the flat structure strapped between, because it doesn’t bring anything to the seakeeping performance of the yacht,” noted Jones.&nbsp;To create something new, you must dare to think outside the box, which is precisely what Jones and his team did. “We placed a monohull on top of a couple of catamaran hulls,” Jones shares. A pointed bow on a catamaran hull seemed quite odd at first, but there was more than just a trial-and-error to it. “If you’ve ever been on a catamaran, when going into a wave, they hit really hard on the oncoming water as the hulls get buried.” While pleasurable for some sailing lovers, it’s not ideal for charter guests who envision calm, luxurious cruising. “By placing a monohull on top of the catamaran hulls, we’ve got a traditional yacht bow and form that cuts open the wave, allowing the yacht to quietly lift-up and over those larger waves. While at the same time piercing straight through the smaller ones with no vertical motion for superior comfort underway.The name Wavepiercer refers to the technology at the heart of the design. With no increasing buoyancy forward, the twin demi-hulls cut cleanly through oncoming seas without vertical lift, while the central V-hull provides a controlled, gentle rise, eliminating the wave slam typical of conventional catamarans and the pitching motion of traditional monohulls.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/383079/image/large-f148a3944940c5d7a4e171ce1bc7dcba.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/383079">Subtle and strategic use of spaceThere’s an element of history, too, “catamarans traditionally come from peoples across the Pacific” notes Jones, “originally formed from two dugout canoes strapped together with wood to form a platform for a hut, providing a place for food-stores and shelter.” While the Wavepiercer does not replicate this traditional form, Jones has incorporated the principle of elevated living spaces above the hulls within a contemporary superyacht context.In a regular catamaran, the demi hulls are usually wide to provide comfortable guest accommodation yet below the waterline the hulls need to be narrow for low forward motion resistance. These conflicting needs are usually addressed by increasing hull buoyancy in the demi hulls just above the water line that can cause rapid vertical accelerations in a seaway or side to side rolling when the vessel is quartering or beam on when underway or at rest.The demi hulls in a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/507" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="New Zealand Yachts Ltd (Company)">New Zealand Yachts</a> Wavepiercer are made narrow far above the water line supporting effective whole-vessel wave piercing, which is only possible because the guests’ cabins are not in the demi hulls but forward on the main deck of the central monohull form.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/383078/image/large-d944add3aea87721f8d9529f0fb2e9d0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/383078">A further reason for placing the guests on the main deck, rather than in the hull is because of Jones’ desire to have it look and feel like a superyacht rather than a catamaran. It’s not only a matter of design, but also of bringing people together, “guests can stay on the main deck where life happens, rather than being down in one of the hulls of a catamaran or below the main deck on an equivalent sized monohull.”Another highlight of the Wavepiercer is her ability to store tenders and jet-skis under the main deck along the full length of the central hull. This provides over double the toy storage of a vessel of comparable length, while at the same time keeping guest spaces completely free of tenders, davits and equipment. &nbsp;&nbsp;Spirit, the only currently cruising Wavepiercer superyacht, is chartering around the Bahamas and off the coast of Florida and is fully booked for the season. “Guests enjoy a sleek, uninterrupted onboard environment, while crew operations take place discreetly in the background, allowing service to run seamlessly without intruding on the guest experience,” said Jones.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/383077/image/large-dc73df67bbbeb5cff83074d8ace3957f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/383077">Ready for the next generationWhile Spirit continues to roam the turquoise waters, a next generation of Wavepiercer designs is taking shape, with new concepts, including a 50-metre Voyager superyacht, currently under development. Having grown up in the Whitsundays with a father who teaches captain and engineering qualifications in Australia, it seemed only a matter of time before Charlie Kinder would run a ship. When she became one of the youngest female captains of a superyacht at the age of 22, she surprised not only the industry, but also herself.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/381257/image/large-eb7c1f68242453d77845d37e9b03b312.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/381257">Exploring the superyacht worldCharlie originally started out as a deck stewardess for a 55-metre superyacht, before joining <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1475" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lumir36.9m (121'1&quot;)Heesen Yachts2005">Lumir</a>. There she ran the deck department and drove the 12-metre tender. After only eight months onboard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1475" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lumir36.9m (121'1&quot;)Heesen Yachts2005">Lumir</a>, Charlie was promoted to first officer. From there, everything evolved quite naturally: “I was managing the boat and I already knew the operations and how everything ran. And then our captain left and I ended up just stepping into the role,” Charlie shares.Yet it wasn’t just Charlie stepping up, the owner decided to take a chance on 22-year-old Charlie. “I just took it and ran with it,” Charlie notes. It was just a direct upward trajectory, and it’s been phenomenal to be able to work on this yacht and put together a phenomenal crew. It’s something I am really proud of.“While Charlie has faced plenty of challenges and changes that come with working onboard a superyacht, she has also had to navigate misogyny and continuously being underestimated by her peers. It therefore comes as no surprise that the Captain is very keen to provide opportunities for others walking a similar path.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/381253/image/large-69381e198e0d85e34ad7bc8fc4a082a4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/381253">“I’m hiring crew on merit and on what they deserve. Of course I love giving female crew a shot, because I definitely feel like I didn’t get those opportunities because I was a female,” the Captain recalls. “It’s nice to be able to give back a little and make sure that people don’t have to work as hard to prove as much as i had to: I’d like to be able to change it for the future generations.”It’s not just the hiring crew, but also onboard that Captain Charlie provides plenty of opportunities: from driving tenders, calling distances, or having hands-on driving time of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1475" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lumir36.9m (121'1&quot;)Heesen Yachts2005">Lumir</a> herself. Yet what has been possibly the most rewarding is how other females perceive it. “People come to me and say that ‘this is incredible, if you can do it, I can do it too’, and it feels very privileged to be someone that young female crew look up to. It’s been incredibly rewarding.” Charlie notes.The shift, while slow, is noticeable. There is more support for female crew and more discussions and encouragement about it. “Change takes persistence and resilience when progress starts to feel slow,” Charlie notes. Currently cruising around the Caribbean is the 35.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2614" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tail Lights35.46m (116'4&quot;)Azimut Yachts2011">Tail Lights</a>, owned by tech entrepreneur Lee Mandel. After a recent refit, including a full repaint of the superstructure in a non-metallic grey, this gem is meticulously maintained; mainly due to the diligent care provided by her owner, captain and crew. With over six years of ownership also comes vast experience regarding charter and caring for guests. I had a technology company for about 20 years, and our main focus in that company was building school safety and security technology. We took the company global over a couple of years, and we probably saved a lot of lives with the technology that we developed in the USA. When I had the opportunity to sell the company in 2019 to help it grow, I took it.&nbsp;At the time, I was about 39 years old, and I said, I need to do something, something different, to keep me busy and motivated. One of my passions outside of work is boating; I've been a boater my entire life. I boated as a kid growing up. I have such found memories with my family and learning how to boat with my grandfather and father. I figured if I was going to take the plunge into yacht ownership, why not turn it into a business? I purchased <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2614" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tail Lights35.46m (116'4&quot;)Azimut Yachts2011">Tail Lights</a> as a true business model.I spoke to a lot of people and experts, they said, ‘Look, this is not a profitable business model.’ Well, then I'm going to be the first one to make it a profitable business model. So that's how it came about. Whenever I go do my annual or semi-annual inspections on the vessel, it brings me back and reminds me how hard I worked to get to this point in my life. It's a passion for me, but it's also something that brings me a lot of pleasure when I see guests having the vacation of their lives and hear the great feedback that guests give me after they have a wonderful time with their families and friends; yachting truly brings them together.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/365511/image/large-0fa4c668da228d126c9b500a19bb98b4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/365511">Then this is much more of an exciting business project for you?“Yes, I call it a passion business. Many yacht owners don't run their yachts as a business; they'll do it for pleasure and hopefully they can get some benefits out of it. I took the opposite approach, for me this is truly a business. When it comes to how you run a business like this, it’s truly the hospitality business at an extreme level. When you run a hospitality business, you've got to be able to analyse what the guests experience and step onboard from time to time: like a secret shopper, so to speak.&nbsp;I'll have different people from different walks of life on the vessel two or three times a year to get an idea of what the experience is like, and give feedback and guidance to my team. This is how we come up with our maintenance periods and determine what needs to be upgraded. When a guest comes on they're not going to necessarily tell you what is wrong. If something is not up to par you may never hear back or they may never book the vessel again. Maybe the issue wasn’t bad enough for them to complain, but it wasn't good enough for them to want to come back. I try to mitigate that by being a secret shopper, or I should say, a secret yachter. I do this to really get an idea of the true guest experience and make sure it's up to par, and make necessary adjustments when needed.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/382796/image/large-a9563b92513a997506375bac60686296.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/382796">Would you say, considering everything you’ve noted, that your business model has been successful?“On average, we do 20 to 25 term charters per year, which is incredible. We focus on maintaining the vessel. When people come on, they say, ‘There's no way this yacht is doing 20 to 25 charters. There's no way this crew or this captain has done this amount of charters.’ This is how I truly measure success.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/365512/image/large-464ce55cef09b4d12fe71cb58a12143e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/365512">What is your relationship like with the crew?Treating this like a true business, we follow the chain of command: the captain reports directly to me, the crew reports directly to the captain. Captain Sean's been with me for over five years now and he’s an incredible captain; this is a very busy program, and I had to find someone who wants to run and treat it as a business the way I like to run it. Being a captain is not just about driving the yacht, in fact that's the easiest part. Rather, being a captain is like being the COO of a company, and that COO reports directly to me as the CEO of the enterprise. I treat Sean as I do other COOs of my other companies and we have frequent meetings. He also works with my financial team, who handles billing, accounting, purchases, and expenses. Honestly, Sean’s incredible, he brings these guests such pleasure and joy when they have their vacations and the feedback we get is just incredible.There is a book on the vessel, we call it our guest book, where guests can leave feedback or messages. We’ve already filled two of them because every one who steps onboard notes how incredible of a time they’ve had and that they’re eager to come back, or how it brought their family and friends together, or sharing a once in a lifetime experience. The vessel is a means to transport people from point A to point B. You must maintain it, and keep up with it. You have to make sure it's clean and everything's working and operating, which sounds easy, but it's harder than it seems. I would say 80 percent of charter success is the crew: It's all about the crew and how comfortable they make the guests feel. The entire crew is full time. To support the crew we’ve created our own version of a rotational program where we work with the crew to support them and give them ample time off.The crew truly is family to me, and we do our best to treat them as such. Like I said earlier, the success of the program is all about our crew. They are the ones who really put it all together. With over 18 years of experience in the superyacht brokerage world, Daniel Ziriakus is stepping down from his role as Executive Vice President and COO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1312" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MarineMax (Company)">MarineMax</a>’s Superyacht Division from 1 December 2025. Over that time, he has helped redefine what modern brokerage can be, by turning small boutique companies into global platforms and leading some of the most ambitious integrations in the industry.With rumours already buzzing on the docks about his next move, Daniel sits down exclusively with SuperYacht Times to not only reflect on his journey, but to hint at what might be coming next…<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/378092/image/large-1d9cd1d49126cf533ae9005d9d929798.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/378092">Finding his way into yachtingGrowing up in a small Bavarian town, Daniel was far removed from the sun-drenched decks of superyachts, or the intensity of multi-million dollar deals. “I used to grab my snowboard and head for the ski lift,” he laughed. “The closest thing we had to an ocean was a lake!”His entry into yachting came by chance when Patrick Coote, then Global Marketing Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a>, invited him to join the brokerage’s marketing team in 2007. “It was Patrick that brought me into yachting,” he recalled. “At the time, I’d just exited my first agency venture and was working for a global brand consultancy in Miami. I’d been building brands for years, but I suddenly found myself surrounded by extraordinary people and assets that were ready to be organised into a true global business.”It was that outsider’s perspective that became a lifelong advantage for Daniel. “Coming from brand consultancy gave me a different lens. I saw an industry full of beauty but lacking structure. It was a pre-digital world built purely on relationships, and I wanted to translate that passion into process and bring measurable marketing to a space that deserved it.”For next three years, Daniel played a key part in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a>’s global rebrand, streamlining events and building strategic partnerships that resulted in over $40 million in sales. “It was my first taste of how powerful alignment and process could be,” he explained. “And it laid the foundation for everything that followed.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/378099/image/large-0108fdee6d95931c99c9187dad37dcf7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/378099">Shaping the future of modern brokerageIn 2010, Daniel moved to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop & Johnson (Company)">Northrop &amp; Johnson</a> (N&amp;J) where he assumed the role of Director of Marketing. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop & Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> he was able to hone his skills further, driving a global rebrand of their corporate identity, online presence and advertising on a six-month timeline and budget.He later spent several years at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a> in Monaco as their Global Head of Marketing, before returning to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop & Johnson (Company)">Northrop &amp; Johnson</a> in 2014 to help Chairman Kevin Merrigan scale what was then a boutique brokerage, into a global brand.“<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop & Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> had a great culture,” he said. “Kevin had created this coherent, positive environment and it felt different when you were inside the company. The question was, how do we scale that without losing the magic?”That focus on culture became the backbone of Daniel’s leadership strategy. “We didn’t just grow, we engineered growth,” he said. “We scaled the firm about 15x, but the goal wasn’t just size. It was protecting what made it special. We built a professional infrastructure while keeping the DNA intact.”To achieve that, Daniel and his team created what they called the “NoJo Manifesto”, a set of around 30 behavioural traits that guided every hire. “I personally interviewed around 180 people in the early years,” Daniel added. “We made sure that every hire was a perfect fit to the culture we had created. Because to us, culture isn’t a department, it’s how you show up every day.”Beyond culture, Daniel’s focus was also on architecture. “We built not just a stronger brand, but a full operating system including CRM to data-driven marketing. One of the turning points was launching our Strategic Partnership Marketing Agency, which brought us into the orbit of top luxury brands and expanded visibility well beyond yachting. As Daniel and Kevin began exploring options for investment or partnership, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1312" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MarineMax (Company)">MarineMax</a> opportunity emerged.“Before flying up to Clearwater with my pitchbook, I’d had a few false starts with investors who just didn’t get it,” Daniel recalled. “My mission was to find partners who understood culture as much as capital. When I met Brett McGill, Mike McLamb and Chuck Cashman it clicked, and ten months later, we signed the deal.”For Daniel, integrating a boutique brokerage into a multi-billion-dollar public company was both a challenge and an opportunity. “When you match a fast-moving entrepreneurial business with a corporate entity, it tests everything, from your patience, to your communication and resilience. The key was to build bridges, not hierarchies and to combine corporate strength with entrepreneurial agility.”There are always challenges with integrations, but the hardest part was persevering <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop & Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a>’s spirit. “Decision-making had to stay close to the client,” Daniel explained. “It’s easy to get lost in corporate layers, but we fought to keep the tempo and autonomy that defined us. That was the hardest piece and it required relentless effort.”It was his partnership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1312" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MarineMax (Company)">MarineMax</a> Chief Revenue Officer Chuck Cashman that was instrumental in striking that balance. “Chuck's an operator with real empathy. He taught me that leadership isn’t about control, but instead about enabling people to win. The real task was creating trust so that change felt shared, not imposed.”He’s quick to credit Alessandra Nenci, Group CFO and Executive Vice President of the Superyacht Division, as a key partner in that transformation. “Alessandra has been instrumental in everything we achieved,” he said. “Her clarity, financial expertise and strategic thinking helped shape the division into what it is today.”The result transformed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1312" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MarineMax (Company)">MarineMax</a> from a simple holding company into a coordinated platform capable of scaling across brands and regions. “Together, we grew <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1312" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MarineMax (Company)">MarineMax</a>’s superyacht division into a 450+ person, nine-figure ecosystem managing billions in global inventory. My kids are eight and eleven and this is the perfect window. We’re planning to start in Australia and New Zealand, then Southeast Asia, before wrapping up in South Africa. For once, I want to travel without a phone buzzing every 45 seconds.” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1312" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MarineMax (Company)">MarineMax</a>, he added, has been fully supportive in his decision. “They understood that sometimes you need to recharge to come back sharper!”Even with his sabbatical ahead, his focus remains forward-looking. “I’m drawn to the intersection of luxury, data and technology; the space where emotional intelligence meets digital intelligence. That’s where the next big wave is coming.”He predicts that the next decade of yachting will be defined by smarter ownership, transparency and sustainability. “The next generation of clients expects something completely different, something simple, purposeful and authentic. Just as physical tank test models are giving way to computational fluid dynamics, so another form of virtual modelling is coming to the fore – the digital twin. But what is a digital twin, and how can we use them to streamline superyacht design, construction and operation?Providing an exact definition of a digital twin can be tricky, not least because different people use the term in different ways. With conceptual origins tracing back to NASA in the 1960s, the truth is that digital twins come in a variety of forms and offer multiple applications – all of which have the potential to change the approach to design and enhance the operational effectiveness of superyachts.“I haven’t found a consistent way that people use the term,” says software developer Boudewijn van Groos. “For example, some call a simple 3D model a digital twin, even if it doesn’t make predictions. It might show live sensor data from the vessel, but it’s really just a portal into the actual ship. That is fundamentally different to a software model that mimics the behaviour of a system based on physical or statistical calculations. Yet people refer to both as digital twins.”Models created in a software environment are arguably the purest form of digital twinning. They are increasingly being used both to train AI and to enable systems developers to code the core parts of a yacht’s controllers while the physical yacht itself is still in build – a decisive factor when faced with tight construction and delivery schedules.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397081/image/large-c63a38ee887c535cd43a28154e353077.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397081">Virtual virtuesVan Groos is leading a team of software developers who are undertaking the coding of a multifaceted monitoring and control system aboard Project Zero, the renewables-powered sailing yacht under construction at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/34" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vitters Shipyard (Company)">Vitters Shipyard</a>. In collaboration with German company XRG Simulation, they have been building a virtual version of the yacht’s systems in Modelica, which allows them to write the code for the programmable logic controller (PLC) for the thermal harvesting and recovery system, for example, and test it before the physical system has been completed. While the team has also been using a current sailing superyacht as a test bed, creating a digital twin has brought additional benefits.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397079/image/large-c1ba2f94baf775740a49c5322a0b5621.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397079">“For everything we’re doing we first write the physical thing into code to form the digital twin,” Van explains. “That simulation can be very basic, or a deep mechanical simulation. It gives us an opportunity to prevent regression bugs and it means we can avoid having to run our code on a physical system that means needing the real machine every time, which is just a hassle.”Developing a digital twin not only creates a platform for virtual testing, it also provides an opportunity to explore or to train AI, which can have real-world applications in a finished project. Indeed, this is the approach that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3559" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Videoworks Group (Company)">Videoworks</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a> took, in collaboration with the University of Pisa, to develop the systems on the 42.84-metre superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12135" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seawolf X42.84m (140'7&quot;)Rossinavi2024">Seawolf X</a> catamaran.“On a yacht you have a lot of very high-tech systems, each optimised and each with sensor actuators,” explains Maurizio Minossi, CEO and CTO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3559" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Videoworks Group (Company)">Videoworks</a>. “The idea is to create a sort of manager that grabs the data coming from the different subsystems and, thanks to the use of AI algorithms, gives it added value in terms of monitoring and control.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397078/image/large-3bbe7f4296cb60275d58eb400d1d5976.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397078">“AI algorithms need to train on something – you need a story,” adds Sergio Saponara, director of the Department of Informational Engineering at the University of Pisa. “But if the technology is new, how do you create that story? Creating a digital model of a yacht allows you to fill the AI with data. You analyse the chiller in a model, then you combine it with all the other models to create the whole ship.”The system they have developed, which has been designed to be modular for use across multiple yacht designs and configurations, integrates various network-connected sensors, smart plugs, and actuators, such as HVAC systems, lighting, and automated blinds, orchestrated by an advanced AI algorithm. The digital twin enables the simulation of different configurations and operational scenarios, generating virtual data that can be used to train AI models – a useful approach given the challenges of limited experimental data on energy consumption and passenger habits.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397077/image/large-efe714be9d6f415bcddaf70b66ca2da0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397077">Test rig&nbsp;It’s not just in systems design that digital twins are being utilised. For Dale Morris, Group Head of Global Design at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2447" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Spars (Company)">Southern Spars</a>, the development of digital twins has enabled advanced, in-the-box testing before a rig is stepped – a serious advantage given the one-off nature and complexity of superyacht masts and sail plans.&nbsp;“The outcome is what’s on the water, but the model that came before it has been through all the conditions,” he says. “It starts with base mast properties, rigging pre-tension and tuning, but we add in the actual moulded sail shape and structural files from North Sails, and then we can assess the rig to a whole other level.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397082/image/large-2efc90f958531c34f23220a01c23ffdf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397082">This allows the team to see the effect of their rig design choices even down to its impact on the actual shape of the sails. They can go into a whole CFD loop, where the fluid structure interaction (FSI) loops back into the non-linear FEA – non-linear because the mast is flexible. That essentially means they can sea-trial the yacht before any carbon fibre even gets laid in the mast mould.“That also flows through into how we communicate the safe operation to the customer with all the sheet runs and all the load interfaces, so that boatbuilders can build-in the right safety factors,” &nbsp;Morris explains. “You can assess all that within the digital twin.”It also impacts the initial sea trial phases because, rather than the traditional method of stepping a mast and eyeballing the rig to tune it and ensure it is set up symmetrically, it can effectively be pre-set. Gone are the days where you put the rig in, go sailing and flop from tack to tack, make changes, rinse and repeat, which can be a two-day operation.“We are able to virtually go sailing before we even put carbon in the mast tooling, and for yacht designers, owners and crew that’s a huge benefit because it elevates confidence before you get further into the project,” &nbsp;says Vincent Guiot, Group Sales Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2447" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Spars (Company)">Southern Spars</a>. &nbsp;Further, the applications extend to the operational phase. By using the information from the load sensors from specific conditions. If something doesn’t look quite right, the team can plug that data back into the digital twin and help someone on board diagnose the issue more efficiently.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397080/image/large-77d39333b2a17751661ad462a20fdfc0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397080">Practical magic&nbsp;As CAD has advanced, so 3D models have become commonplace, not only in terms of determining the underlying engineering layout of a vessel but also to ensure the vessel can be built as efficiently as possible. But when one superyacht project approached Dutch company Goltens to take that 3D model further, the potential for an all-encompassing digital twin quickly became apparent.“Normally we design, engineer and create 3D models, and during that process a lot of information on the components – size, material, capacity, make, model – is put into a database,” says Sandra Jutte of Goltens’ Green Technologies division. “But when the vessel departs, most of that information, which can number thousands of data files, stays behind. For this project, we were asked how we could collect all the engineering data in one place during construction and use it to make the yacht smarter in operation.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397085/image/large-8490e120db5880a524554f471c7eb9b6.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397085">To achieve that, the Goltens team combined ongoing 3D scanning during the build with CAD and engineering drawings to create a digital version of Project Zero that is a perfect match for the real thing. The result is that all the information on the build, systems and components is available for easy access – especially useful when it comes to fault-finding or in the event of a system alarm.&nbsp;“You need an exact copy of the yacht, so during the entire build our team has been on site with a 3D scanner capturing every stage of the build,” says Jutte. “We’ve scanned every detail, including 100,000 metres of cables and six kilometres of piping.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397086/image/large-39fff693692206113bdc5e36b8ec672b.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397086">Every pump, pipe and system is connected and with e-sharing it’s possible to click into the engineering drawing and instantly jump to the same spot in the 3D model, and vice versa. All relevant details and spare parts listings are available with a click. What’s more, the digital twin will form the backbone for predictive maintenance and, potentially, AI-rooted energy efficiency and systems analysis during the operational phase – an aspect that could have huge impact for a project where every kilowatt counts.The potential goes further, however, because wherever the vessel goes, the digital twin goes too. This means designers can use the digital twin to experiment with new ideas or test layouts without ever touching the real vessel, while engineers can follow system performance and simulate improvements, and and owners can explore their yacht anytime, anywhere.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397087/image/large-8c4ef31785ce28bc95f037d27cf282ff.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397087">Such a comprehensive scan-based digital twin improves maintenance aspects – with all manuals and spare parts lists easily accessible, and with the potential to add predictive maintenance algorithms – but also aids efficiency in a refit phase.&nbsp;“Refits and repairs are no longer a guessing game,” says Jutte. “Because if a component needs to be replaced or a new component fitted, the digital twin already knows what’s there currently and if the new one will fit. It means you can order or prefabricate parts with confidence. It’s a complete feedback loop between design, operation, maintenance, fault-finding and improvement.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397089/image/large-cbdce16aec81ad92d4d28edb2f355442.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397089">

How is virtual modelling transforming superyacht design and operation

From rig testing to predictive maintenance, digital twins are reshaping how superyachts are designed, built and operated.

The United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida has dismissed the entire complaint brought by Export Yacht Sales (Brill Maritime), which alleged that Boats Group illegally monopolised the US online boat-listing market through YachtWorld, Boat Trader and boats.com.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355047/image/large-0bd8f332392990f5a08cac6ea37b81d1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355047">The lawsuit was filed on 14 August 2025, with Brill Maritime alleging that Boats Group controlled approximately 75 percent of the market for listing and marketing recreational boats and used subscription agreements that either bar or discourage brokers and dealers from listing vessels on rival platforms.Read more: <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/64073" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="US boat dealers bring antitrust class action against Boats Group (2025-08-21 13:00:00 +0200)">US boat dealers bring antitrust class action against Boats Group</a><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355053/image/large-d4b378b0bbe9bf56a1926a2d570b4fd5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355053">According to Brill Maritime, competing platforms had been unable to achieve the scale or inventory to grow their services effectively, leaving brokers and dealers with limited options.The court found that Brill Maritime had plausibly alleged that the relevant market could be defined as an online boat listing and marketing service in the United States and that Boat Group may possess monopoly power in that market.&nbsp;Brill Maritime also alleged that Boat’s Group claimed 75 percent of the global share, reasonably supporting an inference that it has a dominant position in the US market. As a result of this, the judge did not dismiss the case because Boats Group lacks market power.However, the judge said that Brill Maritime had failed to show that Boats Group engaged in illegal anticompetitive conduct and under US antitrust law, being a monopoly is not illegal by itself.The court repeatedly emphasised that monopoly power is legal, but using that power through anticompetitive behaviour to exclude rivals is illegal.&nbsp;The judge found that Brill Maritime’s three main allegations were insufficient including that Boats Group became dominant by acquiring competitors such as YachtWorld.com, boats.com and YachtCloser.com.The judge said that acquiring competitors is not necessarily illegal and that Brill Maritime had not explained how these acquisitions had harmed competition. The complaint had described the acquisitions as “strategic” suggesting it was more of a successful business move than illegal conduct. The judge explained that Brill Maritime had shown that Boats Group bought competitors, but not that these acquisitions were unlawful. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355039/image/large-513a0ee840e10e5371f647093bba58d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355039">Brill Maritime also claimed that Boats Group's subscription agreements stoped brokers from listing boats elsewhere. The judge examined the contract language and concluded that the provision merely prevented brokers from implying that a YachtWorld or Boats Group listing originated somewhere else. He therefore concluded that you can advertise on YachtWorld and on other sites and the contract simply prevented you from pretending a Boats Group listing came from another platform, meaning the clause is not an exclusive dealing arrangement.Finally, Brill Maritime argued that Boats Group had dramatically increased its prices. The judge responded that high prices alone are not an antitrust violation. The court cited multiple precedents saying a legal monopolist is generally allowed to charge whatever prices it wants. To prove monopolisation, Brill Maritime needed to show that the higher prices resulted from illegal exclusionary conduct.In conclusion, the judge accepted that Boats Group may hold monopoly power in the US online boat-listing market, but ruled that the plaintiffs failed to show that Boats Group acquired or maintained that position through illegal anticompetitive conduct.United States District Judge, Roy K. Altman dismissed the complaint without prejudice, meaning the plaintiff is able to resubmit an amended complaint, with a deadline of 30 June 2026.&nbsp;The lawsuit also contained claims under Florida law, with the federal court declining to hear the state claims as the federal antitrust claims were dismissed. These were also dismissed without prejudice, allowing for them to also be refiled.&nbsp;SuperYacht Times will continue to follow this story and will provide updates where necessary.
