Leading global yacht chartering firms believe the Middle East has a strong potential to become a preferred luxury yacht chartering destination, citing further expansion of the region’s superstructure, particularly marinas, and a growing vessel support network as key drivers in putting the area on their – and their clients’ – radars. “Traditionally areas such as the Caribbean and the Bahamas, the West and East Mediterranean, as well as the Indian Ocean remain favourites for many clients with a large choice of yachts and tried-andtested cruising areas,” said Amanda Armstrong, charter broker at Burgess Yachts, a leading professional superyachting service. “Clients, however, are always on the look-out for new destinations and if the large superyachts become available there – and they will given the kind of infrastructure development taking place – as well as good accessibility from all over the world, then the Middle East will become very popular in the years to come.” <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/130375/image/large-cae83ddf2b14793f9205c4f1114a42b5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/130271">Armstrong admits the Middle East is an extremely significant market for the company. “Charter demand from Middle Eastern clients has maintained a steady pulse and represents around 10-15 percent of our charter business. We are naturally keen to maintain our presence and increase our reach throughout this area,” she continued. “We have a number of clients in the Gulf and it is certainly an important and growing region for us. We also have a number of managed yachts that occasionally cruise the area. We are planning on expanding our operations in the Gulf; we already have one representative permanently based there and we hope to expand this over the coming years,” said Charlie Birkett, CEO of YCO Group plc, a global leader in charter management and luxury yacht sales. Luxury living is almost a byword for the Gulf and the multitude of landmark developments underway throughout the region is growing marina lifestyles. A fascinating series of marinas are taking shape, making the Arabian Gulf possibly the yachting industry’s biggest growth market over the next decade. Though many Gulf nations have a long and treasured seafaring heritage, the latest wave of waterfront developments has taken the region’s marina lifestyle to a whole new level. Abu Dhabi in particular is becoming increasingly popular among leading superyacht charter brokers. During the inaugural F1 Etihad Airways Grand Prix held at the Yas Marina Circuit, chartered yachts spotted during the race weekend included various Benetti and Azimut megayachts.. “The images of these fabulous yachts, from which owners, charterers and their guests followed the race weekend created lasting impressions that bolstered Abu Dhabi’s aspirations to be a leading destination for superyachts in the region,” said His Excellency Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman, Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA), headline sponsor of the 2nd Abu Dhabi Yacht Show, being held at Yas Marina later this month. “Charter brokers are important partners for selling this region and ensuring their proper exposure and education is a priority. Enrico Chhibber speaks with Japan-based yachting experts to explore recent regulatory reforms and infrastructure developments that are gradually positioning Japan as a more accessible and appealing destination for superyachts. When it comes to attractive superyacht destinations in Asia, Thailand has traditionally taken the spotlight. Japan, meanwhile, has remained a lesser-known cruising ground and has often been viewed as logistically challenging. Today, however, that narrative is changing, as Japan begins to reposition itself on the global yachting map. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/370701/image/large-fccdf0ce93277bda47184d5f87855515.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/370701">The Japanese archipelago, comprising more than 14,000 islands and stretching over 34,000 kilometres of coastline, spans approximately 3,000 kilometres from north to south. With climates ranging from the snowy winters of Hokkaido to the subtropical warmth of Okinawa, the country offers year-round cruising opportunities and a broad range of geographical and cultural experiences.Yet despite these natural advantages, Japan has not historically appealed to the international superyacht community. Regulatory complexities and limited marina infrastructure for larger vessels have, until recently, presented notable hurdles to its development as a cruising destination. This landscape is now beginning to evolve. Since 2021, a series of regulatory reforms have made it easier for privately registered, foreign-flagged yachts to enter and cruise Japanese waters.Further momentum followed in December 2024 with the announcement of Superyacht Base Kobe Marina, which is currently under construction, with a full yacht service opening in 2026 and a full opening with surrounding infrastructure taking place in 2027. The project is intended to help address longstanding infrastructural limitations and support Japan’s efforts to attract more superyacht tourism.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/370696/image/large-5ef3ac54fac761e21641b06208086062.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/370696"> Marina infrastructure development in JapanAlthough Japan’s general maritime infrastructure is well developed, facilities specifically designed for superyachts remain limited. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Person/935" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nigel Beatty, United Kingdom (Person)">Nigel Beatty,</a> yacht broker at YACHTZOO and Chairman of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7320" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association (Company)">Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association</a>, observed that while the country is well-equipped overall, it lacks dedicated infrastructure tailored to the operational needs of larger yachts. “Infrastructure is brilliant in Japan, but if you're talking about purely superyacht infrastructure, then we are lacking a little bit,” he said.In most cases, visiting yachts cruise along the coast, anchoring near beaches or making brief stops at town piers. According to Beatty, this pattern highlights the need for more structured superyacht hubs and ports where large yachts can access services such as mooring, refuelling, provisioning, and guest handling. “When you go cruising, you anchor or tie up at a town pier for a night, then move on,” he explained. “But you also need hubs, places where yachts can come in and operate with proper support.”Some capacity does exist. A marina in Fukuoka, for example, can currently host a small number of larger vessels. However, the most significant development is taking place in Kobe, where a new marina is under construction. Announced in late 2024, Superyacht Base Kobe Marina is being developed to accommodate yachts up to 80-metres in length for stern to dockage and any size for alongside dockage. Just in the last few weeks the facility has accommodated a 70-metre and a 117-metre. Beatty noted that the basin is roughly half the size of Port Hercule in Monaco.Yukio Shintani of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1132" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Creation Marine (Company)">Creation Marine</a>, a lead investor who has played a role in coordinating stakeholders for the Kobe project, confirmed the marina is being established as a destination facility and is expected to open within two years. Once complete, it will serve as one of the first ports in Japan specifically designed to support visiting superyachts at scale.While Japan does not yet offer the density of dedicated infrastructure found in more established superyacht destinations, ongoing developments suggest a gradual shift toward greater accessibility and operational support.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/104219/image/large-c94403a78cad4fa52830c3e4d2898030.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/104219"> Before the Change: Superyacht regulations in Japan prior to 2021 Although foreign-flagged superyachts were technically permitted to enter and cruise in Japan before 2021, a combination of bureaucratic complexity and limited facilities made the country a difficult destination to navigate. As Nigel Beatty noted, “Whether commercially or privately registered, Japan never really drew a strong distinction between yacht types. Superyachts have technically been able to visit Japan for quite some time. The issue was the bureaucracy involved. While we used to manage it, the process was labour-intensive, and that translated into high costs for visiting yachts.”Japan did offer a relative advantage for crew from visa waiver countries. “There have always been positive aspects to cruising in Japan,” Beatty added. “For example, if you were from a visa waiver country, such as those in Europe or North America, you could enter Japan by yacht and remain for up to 90 days as a tourist, even as crew.”However, crew from non-waiver countries such as South Africa, India, and the Philippines, who represent a significant portion of the global yachting workforce, faced more complications. These individuals were required either to obtain a visa in advance or rely on a short-term crew pass valid for just 14 days. “Renewing it involved leaving the country and re-applying at an immigration office,” Beatty said. “Approval often depended on the discretion of the local immigration office, which made the process inconsistent and inefficient.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Person/4301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kenta Inaba, Japan (Person)"></a><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Person/4301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kenta Inaba, Japan (Person)">Kenta Inaba</a>, President and Partner at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6572" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Super Yacht Logistics Japan (Company)">Super Yacht Logistics</a>, described how procedural rigidity once defined the experience for visiting yachts. “In the past, every time a yacht entered Japan, we had to process customs, immigration and quarantine, not just on arrival but again at each subsequent port,” he explained. “When I started in this business, I had to submit a full list of every port the yacht was planning to visit. But yachts don’t follow fixed routes like commercial vessels. Their movements are often dictated by weather and anchorage conditions, which makes rigid planning difficult.”Even minor navigational changes could create problems. “If a yacht was anchored and the wind shifted, they might need to move to another part of the bay. But if that area wasn’t listed in the original plan, it became an issue,” Inaba said. “Even bringing something as simple as a bottle of beer back onboard required paperwork.” The system, he added, was not designed with yachts in mind. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/298475/image/large-124d7d95e2299e38d8fd95f9b6b90929.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/298475">Turning Point: The 2021 regulatory reformsRegulatory changes introduced in 2021 significantly altered how Japan manages visiting superyachts. Previously constrained by complex procedures, foreign-flagged vessels now benefit from a more streamlined regulatory environment. “Much of that red tape has now been removed,” Beatty said.One of the most significant adjustments was the introduction of the Naikosen (similar to a cruising permit). After completing initial customs, immigration and quarantine procedures, yachts can apply for the permit, which, along with a blanket Closed Port Permit, removes the requirement to file repeated clearances at each domestic port. “Yachts used to be required to declare every intended stop in advance, which was completely impractical,” Inaba said. “Now, they have the flexibility to change course depending on conditions.”One of the more favourable regulations that was always in place in Japan is that foreign registered vessels remain indefinitely in Japan allowing for longer and more adaptable cruising schedules and possibly basing themselves in the country long term. Changes to crew entry procedures have addressed previous constraints. The introduction of the Multiple Landing Permit, or “Crew Pass,” allows foreign crew to remain in Japan for the duration of the yacht’s stay; and even up to one year. This replaces the former 14-day restriction that often-required multiple renewals and placed a disproportionate burden on those from non-waiver countries. The Crew Pass allows crew ashore in the local areas that the yacht will be for yacht business, shopping or sightseeing.Crew from countries covered by Japan’s visa waiver programme continue to benefit from 90-day tourist access, allowing for greater flexibility to travel ashore or explore the length while the vessel is in port.Together, these updates have reduced many of the operational constraints that previously discouraged superyacht visits. Japan is now better aligned with international practices and more accessible to a global yachting audience; and in some areas have more favourable regulations than well-established yachting countrie<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/298430/image/large-ae231a89fb0e19e109ca66eda85be1ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/298430">Looking AheadJapan’s regulatory progress in recent years has laid important groundwork, but further improvements will be necessary to support charter activity. In particular, foreign-flagged, commercially registered yachts still face regulatory hurdles when seeking to operate charters in Japanese waters. Shintani acknowledged this ongoing challenge. “I want to try to create everything for the foreign-flagged yacht to charter. This is our mission.”While Japanese-flagged yachts can operate commercially, the charter process for foreign-flagged vessels remains undecided, however moves are afoot to make a rule for foreign charter yachts with a charter contract already developed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3581" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hill Dickinson Llp (Company)">Hill Dickinson</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7320" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association (Company)">Asia Pacific Superyacht Association</a>, which navigates specific Japanese regulations. Japan is emerging as Asia’s newest superyacht destination, driven by regulatory reform and new marina infrastructure including Superyacht Base Kobe. 

A new streamlined administrative process has been launched to allow foreign yachts to sail freely between Abu Dhabi and Dubai from January 2026. For the first time, sailing permits issued by either Abu Dhabi or Dubai will be honoured across both emirates, eliminating the need for repeated approvals or local entry and exit processing, which will reduce waiting times, documentation requests, and administrative costs as a mutually recognised permit issued by either emirate will grant seamless passage between the two cruising hubs.Central to the change is a new digital information bridge powered by the Early Inquiry System. Through regulatory reform, targeted infrastructure investment and large-scale environmental initiatives, the city sees yachting not only as a lifestyle draw, but also as a catalyst for long-term business growth, innovation and inward investment.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/371503/image/large-62250e7ac28e232f2c5e8db6051ee892.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/371503">Positioning Dubai for investmentDubai’s transformation from a modest trading port to a global hub for trade, tourism and maritime activity reflects its success in combining clear policy direction with strong public-private collaboration.&nbsp;Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit in May 2025, Issam Kazim, CEO of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6865" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dubai Tourism (Company)">Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM)</a>, part of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), explained how the city has &nbsp;focused on building its infrastructure and attracting tourists from around the world. In 2024, the emirate ranked as the world’s leading destination for Greenfield foreign direct investment (FDI) for the fourth consecutive year, according to Financial Times Ltd.’s fDi Markets, attracting 52.3 billion dirhams ($14.25 billion) in estimated FDI capital alone. This momentum aligns with the long-term goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, which aims to double the size of Dubai’s economy by 2033 and further consolidate its position as a leading global destination for business and leisure.Close cooperation between government and industry has been key to this progress. Regular consultation ensures infrastructure, regulations and sustainability measures align with investor expectations. As Kazim noted, truly understanding the industry and maintaining strong private-public sector partnerships have been “the backbone of Dubai’s success and will continue to be so going forward”.Public investment in major assets, such as the expansion of Nakheel Marinas and the redevelopment of Mina Rashid, is matched by private sector services ranging from maintenance and refit to technical support.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/371506/image/large-e25bec56d4382b9c999e4cae8b373e50.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/371506">Dubai’s appeal for yacht owners and marine businesses is also shaped by ease of access and strong connectivity. With more than 5,000 berths across 22 marinas, Dubai offers capacity and technical services that rival long-established yachting centres. Kazim noted that this growth is clear in the increasing number of yachts and superyachts relocating to Dubai, if not permanently then for part of the year, to benefit from Dubai’s winter climate and supporting infrastructure.Visa policies and streamlined regulations further strengthen Dubai’s competitive position. Programmes such as the Golden Visa, multi-entry visas and simplified superyacht registration make it easier for owners and operators to establish a long-term base. Foreign-flagged yachts are exempt from VAT and customs duties under certain permits, while the proposed GCC Unified Visa could expand regional cruising opportunities.Complementing its business environment is a diverse destination offering. Luxury hotels, fine dining, cultural attractions and outdoor activities add to Dubai’s appeal for owners and family offices. It is described as the region’s most extensive marina dining concept and supports the objectives of the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33.Designed for yacht owners, crews and guests seeking short-term berthing, Dock &amp; Dine provides convenient access to a curated selection of restaurants, luxury hotels, cultural attractions and waterfront entertainment. Visitors can sail easily between different docks and dining venues, enjoying a diverse range of cuisines within a 45-minute to one-hour cruising radius.Key features include complimentary moorage at participating marinas, quick booking response times, direct coordination with restaurants for reservations, and dedicated dock tenders for smooth drop-offs and pick-ups. A unified regulatory framework ensures a consistent, straightforward experience across the city’s marinas.By harmonising marina regulations and enhancing operational processes, the city is making it easier for foreign-flagged vessels to arrive and ensuring guests enjoy streamlined access and world-class service.Making waterfront dining more accessible, the initiative supports Dubai’s appeal as a year-round destination, especially during the peak winter season when favourable weather and a vibrant events calendar attract a growing number of international visitors. An extended stay beneath Capri’s dramatic limestone cliffs was followed by a passage past Stromboli to Taormina in Sicily, and onwards to the Ionian Islands in Greece, with pauses at Zakynthos, Ithaka and Anti Paxos, before turning north to Montenegro and Croatia, where the voyage concluded in Dubrovnik.“It was probably the best of Italy, the best of the Ionian and the Croatian coast – all in one cruise,” the owner reflects. “We covered a huge amount of ground, but it never felt rushed. The ability to adapt to weather or shift plans spontaneously made the experience all the more enjoyable. “We tend to plan as we go. If the weather’s not great where we are anchored, we have the flexibility to move elsewhere quickly. If something looks promising on the chart, we make a detour. You’re not locked into a rigid itinerary.”This responsiveness, paired with a shallow draft and high cruising speed, allowed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2951" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royale X49.9m (163'9&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2012">Royale X</a> to access small harbours and anchorages that many tri-deck yachts simply cannot reach. “We’ve taken her into places like Bonifacio, Portoferraio, Hvar – even backed her into Portofino. That’s a real experience, arriving at those spots by sea in a yacht of this size.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/367659/image/large-8932eb38eb98815ce07278dc03827d06.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/367659">Capable of speeds over 30 knots, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2951" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royale X49.9m (163'9&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2012">Royale X</a> has been designed to make the most of every moment aboard. “We’re often travelling with limited time, just a few weeks, sometimes days. Being able to move quickly between locations changes the whole dynamic. From Monaco, you can be in Saint-Tropez in just over an hour, or dash across to Portofino for lunch. That opens up destinations most people would rule out for a short trip.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/367664/image/large-73c5e0e34d6a141c5f019e8986ce01bd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/367664">While her performance is impressive, comfort has not been sacrificed. The yacht features four guest staterooms, including a full-beam master suite, as well as a fifth convertible cabin that doubles as a cinema lounge. Recently updated, this space now features a full bed and privacy curtain, ideal for families travelling with children or extra guests. Importantly, this adjustment was made without removing the onboard gym, maintaining wellness facilities that are often the first to go on similar refits.“She’s not configured for large parties, we cruise as a family, usually just the five of us. But the layout works brilliantly. The cinema can be set up for guests, and we still have a proper gym. It’s balanced.”Noise and vibration levels are also notably low, even at speed, particularly with the new set of gyroscopic stabilisers. “We’ll often watch movies in the master at night while underway. You don’t notice the motion, it’s very smooth.”What the owner values most, however, is the sense of proximity to the water. “I’ve been on a lot of yachts where you feel quite detached – you’re up high, behind glass, away from the sea. This is different. Over three centuries ago, Maurepas, a French frigate sent by King Louis XIV, sank off the coast of Panama. Its location has remained a secret, closely guarded by the indigenous Guna Yala people of the San Blas islands. No explorer has been allowed to search the sacred waters. For the first time ever, the Guna people have given Deep Blue Explorers (DBE), a team of Ocean X, permission to search for the lost frigate Maurepas, and any passionate traveller can decide to join.&nbsp;To realise this incredible opportunity, DBE teamed up with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6954" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pelorus (Company)">Pelorus</a> Travel to create a sacred treasure hunt. The water surrounding the islands is considered sacred by the Guna people, making it impossible to legally search for the lost treasure. Now, the Guna Yala have decided to share this secret with the DBE-team.To understand why, we have to travel back to 2011 and 10,000 kilometres East. The Ocean X team discovered what is now known as the ‘Baltic Sea Anomaly’, a strange object sitting at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. To this day, no one knows exactly what it is or why it's there. That is, no one besides the Guna Yala. Although its thousands of kilometres away, the Guna Yala believe that the 'Baltic Sea Anomaly' is the interstellar vessel in which their ancestors descended from space. In 2012, a legal representative of the Guna Yala contacted Ocean X to get in touch about not just the anomaly, but also to explore the lost treasure of Maurepas.Besides the hindrance of the pandemic, the long timeline highlights how careful the Guna Yala people are in sharing the details of the lost treasure. Over time, Luke exchanged sailing for wakeboarding and eventually game-fishing, depending his passion for being out at sea. This passion has remained a constant factor in Luke’s life, deepening even further once he could share it with his own kids.A few years ago, Luke sold his business and decided to step into boating in a more deliberate way by acquiring the 35-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a>, built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/554" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyds Ships (Company)">Lloyd Ships</a> in Australia in 1986. Purchasing her in 2024, the yacht allowed for Luke and his family to explore the Australian coast with more comfort, as well as for them to get to share their passion for the sea. “My two boys are especially big on game fishing, and my daughter is very passionate about snorkelling and marine life”, says Luke. By acquiring <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a>, it allows for the family to share their passions with one another.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396937/image/large-131bb2f788c31defa0822382f533d318.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396937">A three-part refitAs <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a> is from the 80s, she was in need of an upgrade when Luke purchased her. The refit has been phased and purposeful, with 2024 seeing the first of the three phases. The yacht spent September to November at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3255" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard (Company)">Gold Coast City Marina &amp; Shipyard</a> where the bridge was upgraded, soft furnishings replaced and extensive paintwork completed. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388209/image/large-c74eb7958e3e321e611bea0e2d9fee9c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388209">The second phase was centred around remodelling the saloon, with new flooring, carpeting and ceilings, as well as mechanical enhancements. Other upgrades included a beach club installation, complete with an inflatable pool, protective netting and a shaded cabana, which has proved particularly popular with charter guests. Possibly the most meaningful addition during this refit have been the zero-speed stabilisers, “my wife suffers from really severe seasickness, the stabilisers are essential in making the yacht comfortable for my family,” Luke shares.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388210/image/large-06ec6524534531dc1f3ac942dd743803.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388210"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a>’s third and final refit will take place in 2027 and will see an upgrade of the crew quarters. Originally, Luke had hoped to finalise the refit this year, but the yacht’s agenda, both in charter and personal use, is almost fully booked for the calendar year, and Luke wants to ensure there is enough time for the refit: “Our crew is so amazing, I'm super lucky to have what I believe is the best crew.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388187/image/large-fde4622fb25e3e416358ace496ed0104.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388187"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3832" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shore Thing35.05m (114'12&quot;)Lloyds Ships1986">Shore Thing</a>&nbsp;juniorYet the 35-metre motor yacht is only half the story. Six months after acquiring the mothership, Luke secured what he describes as Australia’s leading game fishing platform: a custom-built 17.7-metre (58’0”) Assegai sportfisher. Designed specifically for marlin fishing along the country’s east coast, the yacht is equipped with a gyro stabiliser and, more recently, a Furuno Omni Sonar System capable of scanning 360 degrees around the vessel to significant depths, providing a technological edge in a pursuit that still relies on instinct and patience.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396954/image/large-96857bf8151cfcd655d86dc3d061d704.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396954">The reason for acquiring the fishing vessel to cruise alongside the mothership are his sons. Luke shares that “my sons and I have been game fishing together for the last five years or so,” and have even partaken in various competitions in- and around Sydney. “We’ve won a couple of state titles and other competitions,” a hint of pride sits in Luke’s voice. “My children in particular, have a passion for fishing, and I've just shared that passion, and supported it”, he adds.Lukes really enjoys fishing with his family and friends, on a recent trip to the Great Barrier Reef, the Shore Thing 58' landed a 1,223 pound Black Marlin. Yet Luke is quick to note that they’re conscious about the way they fish. “We only catch what we eat; everything else goes right back in the ocean. We’re not hunters, we just fish for the joy of it.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388186/image/large-a98a34adf0095495d9e5f32f36eb458e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388186">The joy of cruisingSome of Luke’s most cherished moments onboard are those with friends and family. “We hosted my 50th birthday onboard,” Luke shares, having chartered the yacht to Whitehaven Beach, located in the Whitsundays, “there were about 40 guests, all friends and family.”&nbsp;Possibly Luke’s favourite memory is the recent Christmas holiday onboard. “Spending time with our family and another family, sitting around and just having deep belly laughs over some beautifully cooked meals by our chef onboard.” Luke describes this as delightful and quite possibly one of the most memorable times onboard. “Your kids grow up so quick, getting to share such a beautiful time together and feeling like, as your kids become young adults, that you can really share laughs and stories. Yet the engineering philosophy behind its custom-designed solutions is based on a resolutely modular approach.When Mervyn van der Ploeg was appointed managing director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom Yacht Equipment</a> in 2015, the company was going through a bad patch. It routinely redesigned everything from scratch for each new yacht project, leading to prototype-level inefficiencies and financial strain. A small but telling example is that it used to produce 32 different types of locking pins. Today, through a process of standardisation and modularisation, that number has been reduced to just two sizes.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396743/image/large-c20dda6c39f046eea94eaa71057b9e2c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396743">“Previously, when designing a platform for a yacht, four different locking pins might have been specified, requiring multiple suppliers,” explains van der Ploeg. “Now, we buy 200 locking pins per year in two sizes from a single supplier at half the cost.”The process began by redesigning a prototype passerelle from scratch using a fully modular approach, which then became a template for other equipment. While remaining a supplier of custom equipment, modular components are now reused across <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s product range, reducing design complexity and streamlining production.“A key technical insight came from looking outside the yachting industry,” continues van der Ploeg. “For example, swivel joints originally designed for excavators have been incorporated into our gangways. These components are proven, industrial-grade and standardised, which means we can build highly reliable systems without reinventing core mechanisms.”In the ten years since van der Ploeg joined the company, turnover has more than doubled from €12 million to €25 million, driven by increased efficiency along with larger yachts and a rising demand for integrated equipment.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396739/image/large-d48d0f06ceeb5a00cfda9bafe1c96878.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396739">Make it modularThe spin-off from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s modular way of thinking are innovations designed to maximise open space while eliminating visual clutter. Many of these solutions revolve around relocating drive systems into hinge lines and the platform structures themselves. In one recent project, a large side platform was initially conceived as two separate elements with a manually installed infill piece. While technically feasible, it was operationally awkward. Instead, by introducing an internal hinge drive already proven elsewhere, the entire system was re-engineered as a single monolithic platform. The infill was eliminated, deployment became faster, crew workload was reduced, and the geometry became cleaner.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396744/image/large-4feaec6057dc57f70fe27a2f2a88296b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396744">The Sliding Stairs Access Hatch is another example. Developed in response to a request to optimise the passage from the main deck to the beach platform on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship’s</a> 79.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11677" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Valor79.5m (260'10&quot;)Feadship2025">Valor</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s engineers merged door, hatch and boarding equipment components to create a completely new solution. Essentially, the staircases on each side of the pool form the hatch itself, with half of each staircase retracting into the deckhead like a gangway to provide access to the beach club.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396742/image/large-bd76338bca2c0e5436acede35e416f93.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396742">“This marked a next step in modular engineering for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>,” says van der Ploeg. “Our approach not only accelerated the development process, but also showed how modularity enables flexible, cross-disciplinary solutions without compromising quality.”As both staircases form part of the watertight boundary of the vessel certified by Class, one of the main challenges was ensuring watertight integrity, given the angle at which the stair hatches are installed, as well as aligning the treads between the hatches and the fixed structures. In fact, sealing has become a central issue as stern structures grow more complex – folding, rotating and closing at compound angles. While inflatable seals are often the go-to solution and offer excellent theoretical performance, they also represent a single point of failure. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> typically prefers D-profile rubber seals, which wear gradually, remain locally manageable, and allow temporary mitigation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396741/image/large-cf52ffb86158af5f4ac7a5922058d9b5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396741">“This approach is especially critical for Lloyd’s-certified watertight items such as split transom doors closing at different angles, where corners and junctions between curved surfaces become critical failure points,” van der Ploeg points out.Such solutions highlight how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> has evolved beyond developing hardware to innovating the onboard experience, a strategy that has resulted in multiple patented solutions, from pop-up gangways embedded in the stern platform to protective cabrio covers engineered to fold, stack or nest completely out of sight when not in use. At the last edition of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Metstrade (Company)">Metstrade</a>, the company presented five interactive aft deck models through immersive 3D visualisations showcasing how engineering, design and user experience increasingly converge in the early phases of yacht development.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396745/image/large-b406b1bef2a73b0811b05344a273be7e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396745">Under controlAnother defining feature of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s approach is that its control systems and programming are all developed in-house. Precise timing between electronic commands, hydraulic oil flow and mechanical motion is critical, as are programmed delays that account for inertia and mass. Most systems employ frequency-driven power packs rather than simple on/off hydraulics, resulting in smoother movement, lower noise levels and the elimination of hydraulic ‘hammer’ effects. Automated operating cycles manage sequencing, speed and end-of-stroke deceleration automatically, reducing the risk of impact damage and operator error. Before delivery, full functional testing is carried out in-house, often with owner representatives present.Enclosed helicopter lifts represent some of the most complex control systems <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> has delivered. Ironically, real-world usage of helicopter lifts has revealed an interesting pattern:&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396746/image/large-793a08021cda2fc7bab19c3cd8f1a821.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396746">“On some yachts, the heli hangars are no longer actively used and instead function as static storage platforms,” reveals van der Ploeg. “In such cases, owners may even suspend servicing altogether – an illustration of how operational reality can diverge from original design intent.”Developments in control systems are being matched by advances in data intelligence. During the COVID period, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> expanded its remote-support capabilities and identified a recurring issue: when faults occur, crews often cannot describe what happened beyond “pressing the button”. To address this, its latest systems incorporate data logging that records each operating cycle, sequence order, timing, load condition and fault event with precise timestamps.“When an issue arises, engineers can trace it back to the exact operating condition that caused it,” explains van der Ploeg. “While still being rolled out primarily on new-build projects, data logging represents a shift towards evidence-based rather than purely scheduled maintenance.”Across <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s predominantly hydraulic product range, failures rarely originate in the actuators themselves. Instead, the most vulnerable areas are where forces converge – locations where multiple loads are transferred into a single structural interface. Passerelles are a prime example:“Forces are transmitted through long, slender structures back to a limited number of mounting points,” explains van der Ploeg. “When additional functionality is introduced, such as lateral slewing rather than straight-line deployment, those forces increase substantially.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396750/image/large-74a75f9786460908e4bf98d749448420.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396750">Bonding and bolt-inSome <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> passerelles now extend up to 16-metres in length, pushing the limits of lightweight structural engineering while maintaining stiffness, safety margins and regulatory compliance. Designing these interfaces requires careful attention to geometry, material thickness and fatigue behaviour.Marine-grade aluminium remains the primary structural material, selected for its high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance. Steel is used selectively in high-load interfaces where stiffness and wear resistance are critical. Carbon fibre has also been deployed strategically, particularly in the outermost sections of passerelles. Reducing mass at the extremity lowers bending moments throughout the structure, enabling greater reach without adding reinforcements.&nbsp;A more recent addition to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a>’s fabrication methodology is the introduction of structural adhesive bonding. In lightweight aluminium constructions, particularly passerelles, welding thin sections sometimes caused unacceptable deformation due to heat input. To address this, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> now uses a hybrid method: components are positioned with bolts to prevent movement, while the structural adhesive provides the primary load-bearing bond. In this configuration, the bolts act purely as locators and the adhesive carries the load.Another key evolution is the move towards bolt-in housings for boarding equipment such as passerelles and swim ladders. Historically, these housings were built directly into the hull, placing installation and testing squarely on the shipyard’s critical path. This new approach uses self-contained housings that are assembled and factory-tested in-house, accepted by owners or representatives, and installed later as plug-and-play units.“Once delivered, the housing is bolted into place, hydraulics and electrics are connected, and functionality is assured – eliminating the risk of delays, rework and repainting,” says van der Ploeg.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396752/image/large-1ea3884318d73cd6441f8d9cf8801f9c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396752">Breaking outSolely owned by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4951" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw (Company)">Koninklijke De Vries,</a> until recently <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> worked exclusively within <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>. It is now pursuing a more open strategy, with roughly 60% of turnover derived from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> new-build projects, 25% from service and refit work on existing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadships</a>, and the rest from other shipyards – a share that continues to grow as the company expands its marketing network.An early major non-<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> contract was with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4644" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AKYACHT (Company)">AKYACHT</a> in Turkey for its 120-metre-plus project (NB012) due for delivery in 2030. Another is the new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA</a> Custom 80 currently under construction at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA Yachts</a> in Ancona. The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA</a> client, an experienced <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> charterer, specified <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> to supply the boarding systems with which he directly interacts – in total, five independent mechanical systems with fully integrated control logic.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396754/image/large-0eae94a6e941a08764d18f82632bee1f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396754">Across all these developments, a clear evolution emerges. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5438" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Akerboom Yacht Equipment (Company)">Akerboom</a> has progressed from boatbuilder to specialist supplier, system integrator and, ultimately, lifestyle collaborator. Each project begins by asking what experience the owner, designer or shipyard wants to achieve.
