We started the business in the darkest of times during the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 yet by a combination of persistence and keeping overheads low we survived and began to grow organically.&nbsp;We wouldn’t wish to be hubristic but it has been somewhat satisfying to prove doubters and detractors wrong in their predictions of an early demise for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2237" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuperYachtsMonaco (Company)">SuperYachtsMonaco</a>! Instead of falling by the wayside, I think we have become well-established and respected in the yachting industry with a loyal clientele and impressive year-on-year growth. Obviously we faced the same hiatus as others during the Covid19 lockdown periods of recent years but we have also enjoyed the boom that followed it too. We have built a highly experienced team working in a positive and cooperative corporate culture which is very much to the benefit of our clients.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/259988/image/large-4fbe93c563dd7338db6fb50f3dc847e4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/259988">What is your vision for the next five, or even fifteen years for&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2237" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuperYachtsMonaco (Company)">SuperYachtsMonaco</a>?The vision that James, Alex and I have for the next five years is to maintain our high standards of customer service and to continue to grow the company in the same organic manner. We have never been about quantity in terms of the size of our team but rather we build up on the basis of quality.&nbsp;The company’s DNA is something we have always taken great care of – and that won’t change. We can definitely see certain areas in which we can bolster our offerings and do better. The challenge that all established companies and reputable brokers have today is in dealing with a much more crowded brokerage space and therefore how to differentiate. We have various strategic plans for how to tackle the changing market and naturally those include a smart approach to data management and a closer embrace of the rapidly evolving digital environment.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/8481/image/large-2351a77d3ba34948bceaf51e87c082ae.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/8481">Consultancy is a major part of brokerage – but how do you actually steer buyers to their perfect yacht? And is the process different for first-time buyers?Consultancy is indeed an integral part of the process and the quality of that consultancy is a huge differentiator amongst brokers. It is a statement of the obvious to say that it is vital to listen carefully to a client’s stated requirements at the outset of any inquiry. The skill is in our interpretation of that requirement and the resulting guidance we bring to it. “Steer” is not a word I would readily apply to our approach at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2237" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuperYachtsMonaco (Company)">SuperYachtsMonaco</a>. Our objective is always for the client to arrive at his or her final decision independently following our provision of accurate information and of balanced and logical opinions based on our deep knowledge of the market.First-time Buyers present a slightly different challenge but it is rare for anyone to purchase a yacht without any prior knowledge or experience, perhaps of chartering. We might find ourselves needing to explain in more detail the various aspects of ownership such as OpEx, regulatory issues and crewing etc. but fundamentally it is the same process.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/258825/image/large-f12611b3b5c9ff29fcbfa5bdeab4cfdb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/258825">2021 and 2022 have both been banner years with yacht sales. What do you anticipate for 2023, especially given such a lacking inventory of quality yachts on the market?The lack of inventory is certainly an issue at the moment although it is arguably a better problem to have than oversupply and a dearth of buyers. The question on everyone’s mind is whether the recession will bite in 2023 and if there will be reduced demand in the market.&nbsp;Sitting here in February it is a tough one to call. Governments make their various adjustments to rates and stave off immediate economic pain but we wonder if these measures are only a band-aid. Arguably there are early signs that demand has slowed both in the sales and charter arenas but when Spring is just around the corner we remain hopeful for a positive year.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/58347/image/large-aff93d258e58d91574859959f1a7b4be.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/58347">And how has this impacted pricing – are yachts selling above market value?Over the last 18 months the data shows that some yachts have sold above market value and if not actually selling above market value then at a minimum we can say that asking prices have held pretty firm and sellers have been achieving close to their objectives. We are experiencing some cooling now, yet we are of the mind that barring global economic disaster the lack of inventory will offset a reduction in demand and the market will remain fundamentally buoyant.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/213165/image/large-63f2109c57501d0d15da5336e6ac5876.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/213165">Has there been a growing interest in the new-build, refit and conversion markets?Based on the figures you have at SuperYacht Times and the wider data it is clear that the new build order book is very strong. That order book is influenced by various factors but importantly the number of UHNWI worldwide is increasing year on year which ultimately means more superyacht buyers in the market. When that pool of buyers is faced with a limited inventory the natural progression is for shipyards to see more orders for new build yachts. Similarly with conversions as a means to achieve an accelerated delivery.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/253008/image/large-a4c128affcc6081a788d2312a9fe6f39.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/253008">Many brokerage houses have consolidated in recent years. Is this something&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2237" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuperYachtsMonaco (Company)">SuperYachtsMonaco</a>&nbsp;is considering?Yes it is something we have considered and will continue to consider as sensible business owners. With the right alignment of stars, we would not rule it out. We have observed from the sidelines and see some consolidations which we view as successful and others that don’t make sense to us….. so, we take a very pragmatic approach to it.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/207882/image/large-877ca095a575c77bb3aaefe87b8cb681.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/207882">In light of the seizure of Russian-owned yachts, should yacht brokers play a role to improve the external perception of yachting?Yacht brokers should indeed play an important role in influencing the external perception of yachting. There is a great deal of misinformation about yachts and the yachting industry in the mainstream media and an absence of fact-checking in publications like the Daily Mail which can create a negative public perception that tars us all with the same brush.&nbsp;Everyone involved in this industry ought to be very active in counteracting this by offering a narrative that tells of ethical behaviour in the business, strict adherence to KYC requirements and zero tolerance for anything that might contravene international sanctions. By the same token, we also are also careful to guard against blanket Russophobia and hysteria.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/96020/image/large-bcc9b52037ed721131ea7422606adaa8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/96020">Any closing thoughts on the direction yachting is heading?We believe the yachting industry will continue to show impressive growth although the processes will evolve and become more digital. The industry as a whole is resistant to change but it is inevitable that clients will come to expect the same efficiencies and cost savings offered by increasingly sophisticated software and digital applications that impact other industries. So, legacy businesses will need to adapt and be nimble in keeping abreast of developments in AI and SaaS as they may relate to the yachting industry.

Broker's insight: Jim Evans of SuperYachtsMonaco on why he remains cautiously optimistic about the market in 2023

Hans van Doornmalen has been a great run of sales since joining <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> nearly eight years ago. He’s sold a number of yachts that exceed the 40-metre mark, and is one of the only brokers to secure a deal with cryptocurrencies.&nbsp;SuperYacht Times sat down with Hans for an exclusive interview, to hear more about the state of the market and how to survive with such a squeeze on inventory. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254348/image/large-e75d650e8e7a1b1de6815767185336c1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254348">Hans, can you briefly introduce yourself and how you got into brokerage?A long story short; my parents bought a pleasure boat in the year 2000 and ever since we have spent every summer with the family on the water. It was during these precious moments that I realised that I wanted to work in a yachting environment and was hoping to combine my passion for yachting with my daily job.&nbsp;Following a brief period in the Dutch Navy, I found a business school in the Netherlands with a focus on yachting combined with commerce (IVA Driebergen). In 2011 I started a weekend job at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/9" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="De Valk Yacht Brokers (Company)">De Valk Yacht Brokers'</a> head office in Loosdrecht, where I slowly but surely started to get more and more into the yacht broking side of the business.&nbsp;I then undertook an internship at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/86" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amico & Co. s.r.l. (Company)">Amico</a> shipyard in 2014 and after my graduation at the IVA Driebergen in the Netherlands, I was hired by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> for their Montenegro office. Following that experience, the company offered me a long-term contract based out of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> Monaco office, where I am currently still working with pleasure and full of motivation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/191625/image/large-a0fa175d2911c86c56888bca91d42424.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/191625">Last year you sold the 40m <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4627" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oryx40.2m (131'11&quot;)Benetti SpA2013">Oryx</a>, one of a handful of sales with cryptocurrencies. Can you see these types of transactions becoming more commonplace?I do think it will be more common that some clients wish to do a transaction in cryptocurrencies; however, I believe that most of the transactions for the coming decade will be in ‘’normal’’ regulated currencies, above all in USD and Euro.&nbsp;The biggest advantage of cryptocurrency is that the transaction is almost instantaneous, which is a huge relief when the yacht is out at sea in international waters. However, as cryptocurrencies are not universally accepted, it will take quite some time and likely regulation for these types of transactions to become commonplace.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/248440/image/large-ac3add3d30a10331a59efccf786fa175.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/248440">Many of your sales were concluded either in-house or off-market at&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>. Is this reflective of how the brokerage house operates?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a> is a close-knit team that really cooperates with one another. We share a lot of intelligence within the team which in turn allows all of us brokers to better advise our clients. In my opinion, this certainly contributes to a high sales-per-broker ratio, in-house sales and off-market transactions. The statistics speak for themselves. &nbsp;And how do you advise your clients on marketing strategies to make transactions as smooth as possible when selling ‘quietly’?Make sure you choose people that you trust so that you are acting as a close team. Then the team should choose the right stakeholders based on a proven track record and longstanding relationships.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254544/image/large-583075fc3aeab7f0a2ee68a594a88ade.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254544">With yachts being sold in record time, is there a lack of inventory of quality used yachts?I think there is indeed. Personally, I have currently more buyers looking to buy than owners looking to sell. However, some opportunities for quality brokerage yachts remain such as the beautiful, fully refitted 41.55-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/283" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Charlotte41.55m (136'4&quot;)Feadship2003">Lady Charlotte</a> that I represent for sale with a very focused seller. I anticipate she will be sold before the summer as she represents excellent value for money which is hard to find in today’s market. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/228767/image/large-97b51d1161da50c5a7ebbda71fd04259.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/228767">How does this dwindling inventory reflect in the new-build market?&nbsp;Whilst I am personally experiencing a lot of activity in brokerage, as a business, we have experienced an increase in new build interest.What is the secret to success in such a fierce market?Like in every business: focus. There are always opportunities in any market. Linking the right opportunity with the right buyer is the result of pure focus, cooperation within our team and accurate intelligence. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254543/image/large-71aea06e5ee39f636de24b04dd606e22.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254543">Looking forward, what are your predictions for the market this year?I still see a lot of appetite for yachts in general, so I don’t see any slowdown in the market. The last two years were exceptional so we should not refer to these as references, but it will not surprise me if we see this strong market continuing over the next year.How can a broker ensure that they’re ‘future-proofed’?A combination of having good sellable yachts for sale in his or her portfolio and as indicated, keeping a very good focus on the market to capitalise on opportunities for our clients as and when they arise.

SuperYacht Times Head of Intelligence, Ralph Dazert shares his analysis of the American brokerage market, with insights from the data intelligence system, <a href="https://superyachttimes.ac-page.com/homepage" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SYT iQ</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/114971/image/large-d13b0031183412a92551fe76d7c75d5c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/114971">As the interest from Russian buyers faded away during 2022 for obvious reasons, the superyacht sales market became even more US-dominated than before. Americans are by far the biggest buyer’s group in the market as of late 2022. At the start of 2022, buyers from North America (so including Canada as well) accounted for 27% of all the in-build yachts over 40 metres according to SuperYacht Times’ own annual market report <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/market-reports/syt-market-report-2022" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">The State of Yachting 2022</a>. This represented more than twice the share of Russian buyers for newbuilds which stood at 13%. So let’s dig a little bit deeper into the data to see in what numbers Americans are buying yachts and more importantly: where?<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/250592/image/large-fe2d30d27ae315f4af3bdb8beefc3c26.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/250592">New superyacht salesIt is always a challenge to find buyer nationalities for new-builds as in many cases the sales simply are not announced or the buyer’s nationality is not disclosed. However, for those deals with identified buyers over 30 metres so far in 2022, US buyers are clearly in the lead. Until 1 September 2022, US buyers accounted for 28 out of 59 transactions in which we established the buyer’s nationality. To put this into perspective, we recorded a total of 136 newbuild sales over 30 metres during the first eight months. The actual number of US-owned newbuilds is probably higher than what we found and will rise as we find out more details about newbuilds as they move further towards completion. For comparison, over the period 1 January - 1 September 2021, we have so far uncovered at least 34 new-build sales involving American buyers (out of the 184 new-builds over 30 metres sold during that period).<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/179339/image/large-80a8ed55dbcbf9e8d1a8bb39c38afa8a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/179339">So where are those American buyers getting these new-builds? The answer is overwhelmingly Italy, in particular when it comes to the popular motor yacht models between 30 and 50 metres. We recorded 17 deals at Italian shipyards with American buyers, almost all in this size bracket.American buyers also like Dutch yards, as they placed four orders there so far this year, including two for projects over 100 metres. Another very large project was sold to an American buyer by a German shipyard, while the traditionally heavily US-focused Taiwanese yards sold another three yachts to Americans, all in the 30–40 metre range. But Americans are also buying new superyachts in Turkey with at least two deals recorded there.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/250591/image/large-24cf634540eecd270ca6973d9bd4a782.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/250591">Used superyacht salesThe used yacht sales market in the United States is also holding up well, with over a third of the sold used yachts so far this year going to the United States. At least 80 of the 224 used yachts over 30 metres sold during the first eight months of 2022 involved American buyers. Over the corresponding period of 2021, a total of 319 used yachts over 30 metres were sold with at least 40% of those going to US owners. Also, a significant part of those deals (at least 70 out of 319 total deals) concerned sales with both selling and buying owners coming from the United States, so it seems that once yachts get sold to the United States, they tend to stay there.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/179337/image/large-81db6737aa45a6a2c69c29d756f05aba.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/179337">American market in 2022 more important than everSo while the total amount of sold new and used superyachts over 30 metres so far in 2022 is lagging behind on the numbers seen in 2021, the number of yachts going to Americans is staying the same or even rising, meaning that the market share of American buyers is in fact going up in some cases. Not only because yachting has truly boomed over the last 2-3 years, with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a> seeing record sales numbers in 2021 and a huge charter surge in 2022, but because, post pandemic, we are also experiencing a true sea change in the type of clients coming to our world. A change that will have a lasting positive impact on how we work and how yachting is perceived from the outside world.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/245837/image/large-a3a9f76c40d53529fbfcd90f5871af0c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/245837">Yes, fundamentally <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a> and other brokerage houses are in the business of selling, buying, chartering, building, refitting yachts and crewing, but it is also about creating the moment. The clients we are working with today – including 40% of those we worked with in 2021 coming to yachting for the very first time – are looking for something new and different. They are buying or chartering with a refreshing perspective, to share and live the experience for every generation of their family and friends. And they have realised that on board today’s yachts, with crews who are up skilled to the max offering everything from kiteboard instruction to yoga classes, anything is possible. The yacht is the destination within the destination. The approach across all generations from the Silent Generation to Generation Z may be different, but on board a yacht they all work in harmony, often with different generations positively influencing one another.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/245838/image/large-b63155d6483d08f7168898d4bb89e1c5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/245838">So how can our industry harness the potential of a yacht show like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show (Company)">MYS</a> and others to bring to life for potential owners, many of them new to yachting, the unimagined benefits and joys that the onboard experience can give to them and their family?To answer that question, it is first necessary to look at how yacht shows are perceived in today’s new landscape. The pandemic brought a new perspective on the value of yacht shows, to both owners and brokers. Theoretically, the advantage of a well-run, well-marketed and well-attended show is that clients come to one place and see multiple relevant yachts, as well as gaining insight on any they are interested in from not only the yacht’s Broker, but often the shipyard, designer, even on occasion the seller. For brokers, in theory a good show that attracts motivated buyers is an opportunity for more buyers to see the yacht or yachts they represent, in a single place.However, the sales boom we witnessed during the pandemic is hard proof that we do not need yacht shows to be able to sell boats. The pandemic made Brokers perfect the art of the live walkthrough, which has given their clients an in-depth idea of life on board and an opportunity to quiz the captain about every space and feature before making an informed decision as to whether a yacht is worth visiting in person. For cash-rich, time-poor potential buyers, it is an ideal solution that has changed the process for good, with the added benefit of reduced environmental impact from needless travel. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a> even sold five yachts on the basis of quality video tours alone during the pandemic. Furthermore, the digital proposition is extremely appealing to experienced and new buyers and charterers who are very tech savvy and whose all-around yachting knowledge is extremely solid.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/100073/image/large-c4ea8f2f9069465547c16291f6a22fe1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/100073">At a time where the digital and real-life realms are more intertwined than ever before, the optimised video tour has meant that the in-person tours Brokers give at the shows have been elevated to another level. Building on a buzz created in the lead-up to the event among their own databases, third party brokers and press, Brokers need to bring the experience alive with intelligently structured tours that highlight not only a yacht’s features, but the benefits of those features to a potential owner. For example, pointing out that the beach club on board a particular yacht, unlike on some yachts, is far more than just a means of entering the water: its lounge space with deck chairs means you can watch your family enjoying the jet-skis while sipping cocktails. Or a cinema that offers 12 armchair-style seats as opposed to the common 6 or 8, means every guest can enjoy movie night in the same comfort. These tricks keep the experience top of mind at every step.And in this new experiential yachting landscape, what can we expect going forwards? Today, while sales are slightly down on the record-breaking 2021, they are significantly up on the 13-year average, and charter demand is surging – bookings on our own fleet are up by 87% on 2021. While many are still reeling from the impacts of the global pandemic, we’ve now moved far enough away from the event to garner insight into how its impacted attitudes and behaviours, and whether new trends have emerged from those dark years. In our context – yachting – there aren’t many people better placed than Michel Chryssicopoulos, Global Managing Partner at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a>, to shed light on how the pandemic impacted the yacht market.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/61533/image/large-2125a354dc0b0205706e60c7108b905c.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/61533">During the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2022">2022 Monaco Yacht Show</a>, Michel Chryssicopoulos welcomed SuperYacht Times onboard the 59.4-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/515" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Idyllic59.4m (194'11&quot;)Benetti SpA2008">Idyllic</a>, the smaller of the two yachts that the brokerage house presented at the event, to discuss new and emerging trends in the market.&nbsp;Michel, can you briefly introduce yourself and explain what you’ve been up to at&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a>?&nbsp;My name is Michel Chryssicopoulos and I’m half Danish, half Greek – a combination of two heritages. I lived in the US for quite a few years before joining the family yachting business in 2003. My business partner and I then bought <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a> in 2016, working hard to reorganise and restructure the brokerage house, shaping it into the solid, lean and aggressive company that it is today. We hired quite a few young people and we’re doing very well, riding on this extremely strong market that we’ve all witnessed these last few years.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208226/image/large-6db7e58c3ee47fd896e60f0c8487a20e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208226">There was a surge of sales during the immediate period after the pandemic; has the bubble burst?March 2020 came as a shock to all of us. During those early months it truly felt like we had come to the end of an era. The market performed in the exact opposite way then our initial reaction presumed it would: during these past three years we’ve followed the market, and possibly out performed the market on both the brokerage and new build side.&nbsp;Last year alone we had 91 superyacht sales, across our 14 offices. As we speak, we have eight new build projects underway, including the 43.9-metre Project Illusion that you featured in <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/magazine/how-to-build-it-issue-1" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">How to Build It</a>, as well as two superyachts exceeding 70-metres, both under <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">The Italian Sea Group</a> umbrella. There’s a lot of exciting stuff to come.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208222/image/large-e87c34fa1e62fe78722d0b4e2400c08d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208222">And have you felt the knock on effect in terms of supply chains and high lead times?Personally, I haven’t seen issues in supply chains causing an effect on large custom builds, yet. There are many ways to overcome certain hurdles, and I haven’t been confronted with longer lead times on our larger projects. We are dealing with a couple of series yachts, and I can feel the supply chain pinch more here, whether that’s sourcing engines or spare parts.&nbsp;Have you seen any recent changes in attitudes to cruising destinations?&nbsp;We definitely have seen a huge uptick in those looking to charter the waters of Greece. Pre-pandemic, the region accounted for less than 15 percent of the global charter market, but now it's the most visited destination, claiming &nbsp;close to 30 percent of the market. We have a big presence in the region, with 50 superyachts available for charter in Greece alone – all of which were pretty much booked throughout the whole season. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/245053/image/large-ac8e56a3c18507dfd71a969b4049c21f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/245053">Have you noticed any demographic changes in the market?&nbsp;You know, it's a tough question. We’ve definitely seen an increase in young people entering the market, especially those from tech and crypto sectors. Notably, at the beginning of the year, we had a central agency on an 80-metre superyacht that was sold to someone that had made their money through Bitcoin. It’s a sector that’s been hit pretty hard these last few months, so we’ll likely see a downwind here. But there are definitely newcomers in the market. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/245018/image/large-91c7852578b220311d58c00b3847bf94.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/245018">How about regionally, have you seen any markets growing or dipping post-pandemic?&nbsp;There has been a significant uptick in American transactions – a region that has always been a huge driving force for our industry, but specifically for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a> as we're also US based. I do expect with the US and Europe parity right now that the US will continue this drive. A Euro-denominated yacht is now better priced by 10-15 percent (quote, unquote, cheaper). Couple this with the depreciation scheme, which is expiring in the US at the end of the year. I think we can expect a nice last quarter to wrap up the year with a good bang – and then worry about 2023!Have wider conversations on sustainability-driven any market trends?&nbsp;Catamarans – both sailing and motor – are trending. I was cruising the Greek waters this summer and smaller catamarans are literally in every bay. It’s a trend that I believe is here to stay, and the market will keep on expanding both in terms of offerings and size. Five years ago catamarans were few and far between, and now it's definitely a segment of the market to watch. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224720/image/large-baafe4c2e7762ae9ff47bf2640404830.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224720">Can you share a few words about what’s new at&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a>?&nbsp;We're aiming to become a tech company, &nbsp;so investing very heavily on the digital side of things, mainly for charter but for sales as well. We’ve acquired an IT company with 10 developers, and we’re aiming to have an E-commerce environment on our website, within the first quarter of 2023.&nbsp;

Lead times are at an all-time high and shipyards are booked for years to come, so we’ve made a round-up of the current spec built yachts for sale to help you get your yacht as soon as possible:<a href="https://superyachttimes.ac-page.com/homepage" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SYT iQ</a> tells us that there are currently 99 new-build yachts in the above 30 metre category available. What gulets are to Turkey and Croatia, dhows are to the United Arab Emirates. Wrought with tradition with builds dating back aeons – the dhows are an integral part of UAE culture and heritage and are still widely used today. This tradition has spurred on a strange phenomenon: wooden dhow-inspired superyachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262478/image/large-608b9781f319d0cefba1295d8e9e0f70.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262478">The first dhows that danced across the Red Sea and Indian Ocean were much thinner than they are today. Over the years they’ve stretched and expanded to offer more volume and more stability, but originally they were incredibly slender, packed with goods, darting from port to port.Fisherman and pearl divers had different requirements and needed space to carry their equipment and daily catches. Importantly, they also needed space for more people. These beamier boats are a common sight across the UAE and many are so engorged, swallowing entire restaurants to offer fine dining experiences for hundreds of guests at any given cruise.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262477/image/large-c292da7f2fb1c4adcbbbe9af10bd0569.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262477">The wooden superyachts infuse the two traditions. “The DNA of these superyachts relate just as much to the original dhows as they do to the wide beam and voluminous modern ones,” Mahmoud Itani of IR Yachts told SuperYacht Times. “In this region, onboard space is really important as people want to go out with large groups of friends; usage is very different to Europe.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263196/image/large-96a02755f154b9edeb1b5b06b318e78d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263196">"These yachts are hard to trace as they’re custom-built for individual clients and rarely go on the market – or to any shows, for that matter. “I’ve been attending and organising the Dubai International Boat Show for more than 10 years now, and I can’t remember ever seeing a single superyacht on display that was built out of wood,” Itani reflected.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262487/image/large-807cf5d601fc605e401b8d6626a29e8a.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262487"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262484/image/large-ab44a56f02225eb532c9637ba2f5eaf7.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262484"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262485/image/large-675093ccd1a8dc465dee62fd80015b59.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262485">It makes sense too, as these yachts are rarely – if ever – put up for charter, kept in private use away from the public eye. Boat Shows aren’t relevant for the shipyard’s marketing purposes either, as these wooden dhow-inspired superyachts are invariably single units and quite often the only one built and delivered by that particular shipyard.“There are a few boat builders in the UAE that would build one of these yachts, but the design rarely comes from their in-house team. The unnamed 50-metre Full Custom wooden superyacht was delivered in 2020 and undertook a maintenance appointment last year, which included a complete repaint with a high gloss clear coat. She’s constructed with a teak hull and GRP superstructure, which has then been clad with teak for that traditional look and feel. Henderson Marine International designed and engineered her.With a beam of 10.56, she’s a metre and a half wider than the average 50-metre motor yacht built after 2018. And once onboard it’s the first thing you notice. She can also host five crew in five cabins.When asked about the buying profile for this superyacht, Bret Noble of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bush & Noble (Company)">Bush &amp; Noble</a> anticipates the most attention from Qatar. "There are many well-built traditional dhows in the region," Noble explained. "Qatar is really the number one region for these boats. But they're also not an uncommon sight in and around the UAE. The 50-metre Full Custom superyacht is unique though and interesting for the Australasian market."&nbsp;The second largest known wooden superyacht is the 47.55-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4428" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tiger47.55m (156'0&quot;)Unknown2009">Tiger</a>, delivered in 2009 and currently berthed in Abu Dhabi.
