The Solar1 Monte Carlo Cup has been established to promote solar power technologies, innovation and sustainable energy alternatives to keep our oceans and environment clean and well as creating an exhilarating event. The Cup provides the opportunity to compete and showcase exciting new designs, technological and sporting strengths in a world-class international solar-powered boat racing event and will begin tomorrow.
MS Tûranor PlanetSolar is the largest solar boat in the world, and has arrived in Monaco to participate in the Cup. The boat boasts 512m² of solar panels, which the catamaran uses for it’s only power source.
The carbon structure of the vessel is lightweight and durable, whilst the 512m2 of photovoltaic panels supply 6 blocks of lithium-ion batteries, to date the largest mobile civilian battery in the world. This technology provides maximum power and energy density for a new type of autonomous navigation. When the batteries are full, the boat can navigate for up to 72 hours in complete darkness.
29 teams of 8 will participate in the Solar1 Monte Carlo Cup from around the world, with the event concluding on the 12th July.
