This marks the beginning of a phased approach, with further restrictions on domestic refrigerators, chillers, air conditioners, and heat pumps set to roll out between 2026 and 2033. The EU’s ultimate goal is to phase out the production and use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) entirely by 2050.For yacht owners and operators, adapting to these regulations is non-negotiable. Compliance alone, however, is no longer sufficient. For yachts navigating regions such as the North Atlantic or Baltic Sea, CO₂ offers an environmentally friendly solution. However, its high operating pressure – up to 90 bar – necessitates specialised equipment, increasing costs and installation complexity. In tropical waters, CO₂ systems must function in transcritical mode, which reduces energy efficiency and demands advanced technology. These factors make CO₂ particularly suitable for yachts operating in cooler climates or those willing to invest in the required infrastructure.Ammonia (R717)Ammonia has been a staple in industrial refrigeration for decades, thanks to its excellent thermodynamic properties and zero GWP.
