MYS 2017: Gaëlle Tallarida talks what’s new this year

Every year thousands upon thousands flock to the Monegasque capital of yachting to attend what many regard as the pinnacle of the yachting calendar: the Monaco Yacht Show. With the highest number of 30+ metre vessels on display in the world, the 2017 edition promises to be better than ever before. Here, Managing Director of the show, Gaëlle Tallarida, takes time out of her manic pre-Monaco schedule to tell us what we can expect from September 27th - 30th, and how the event organisers maintain the show’s prestigious reputation year after year.

The Monaco Yacht Show is in a constant state of progression, and last year you introduced new aspects to the event such as the Monaco Yacht Summit and the Car Deck. Tell us what is new at the show this year.

You’re right, the Monaco Yacht Show is praised for developing new projects every year and this September, we will also present new solutions for the Show’s participants. The exhibition areas will be extended with a new air-conditioning tent on Quai Albert Ier, and the Quai Antoine Ier exhibition area will be reset to become a new epicentre of activities at the Show: the Car Deck will be relocated there, we’ll launch a Tenders & Toys exhibition area and a brand new exhibition-lounge, the Starboard. 

What are some of the main highlights visitors and exhibitors alike can expect this year?

The 125 vessels and about 50 world debuts exhibited in port Hercules are undisputedly the jewels of the MYS. In addition to these new deliveries, five yachts refitted in 2017 and 10 yachts delivered in 2016 meaning 50% of the yachts exhibited afloat are less than 2 years-old!

Considering the high-demand and high interest for tenders and water toys these last few years, Quai Antoine Ier exhibition area will surely be one of the main highlights of the Show, as an additional offering for an owner and their family or friends to enjoy the superyacht life! A total of 40 vehicles will be exhibited on various areas including helicopters and submersibles. 

What are some of the main challenges you face with maintaining the prestige and reputation of the event?

Our main challenges - as organisers - remain delivering a top-of-the-range qualitative exhibition and attracting high-end visitors. We recently developed solutions to invite a new potential clientele to enjoy a first-time superyacht experience through the MYS spectrum: the MYS Sapphire Experience, a made-to-measure experience which includes a VIP programme of activities at the Show or private visits to the exhibiting superyachts, in coordination with the exhibiting brokers and shipyards. On the eve of the MYS, we will invite a delegation of new hand-picked visitors to the 2nd edition of the Monaco Yacht Summit. They will meet distinguished experts from the yachting industry who will share inside and unbiased information for a first experience in charter or purchase.

Tell us about MYS-PRIVE.

MYS Privé is a private social club dedicated to the Show’s UHNW guests and delegation. The website ( centralises exclusive and relevant contents to better enjoy a first-time experience of superyachting at the Monaco Yacht Show. The idea is to build up the MYS community of new superyacht buyers and charterers so as to better serve their needs for information and visit the Monaco Yacht Show’s exhibitors in top conditions.

By April this year, MYS had registered 87% of exhibiting companies that return each year - a record since 2008. What does this mean for the event?

This high rate gives us more responsibility to keep on meeting the exhibitors’ needs and turning their requests into tangible solutions so they participate in the MYS every year. For instance, thanks to the results of the exhibitor satisfaction survey we did last year, we’ve improved the Show’s information and transportation services: new geolocation functions in the MYS App, a new process to easily register for a badge, more explicit information signs on site and even a brand-new lounge-restaurant and exhibition on Quai Antoine Ier, the Starboard. 

Tell us more about the private events hosted by the MYS in New York and London over the past year.

In addition to optimised services, the exhibitors clearly express their needs for meeting new clients. For four years, we’ve been developing public relations events to promote the Show and the yachting industry to a non-initiated audience and invite them to Monaco. The evenings in New York took place last May in the St. Regis New York Hotel and in the Consulate of Monaco. The participants were residents of St. Regis hotel, VIP guests of the Consulate, members of American associations of asset managers for wealthy clients or the personal assistants of celebrities from Los Angeles and New York. 

In London too, the MYS joined up with the Monegasque Embassy to receive its privileged guests and the members of two London-based associations of personal assistants to wealthy individuals or celebrities from the United Kingdom. By organising such public relations events during the year, we aim at promoting the Monaco Yacht Show and de facto, the superyacht industry to a new audience and invite them to the Show for meeting the exhibitors.

What advice can you give to first-time visitors this year?

If you attend the MYS for a first time with the intention to find the yacht of your dreams, we would advise you to directly contact our concierge service to register to our Sapphire Experience program. This new service has been especially developed to organise a bespoke-made experience of the Show for you. On the eve of the Show, you’ll attend the Monaco Yacht Summit, that will give you the keys to choose your yacht, then we’ll schedule a range of entertainment and activities around the MYS for you so you live the fullest of the Monaco Yacht Show for four days… and nights! Also, they can download the MYS App to enjoy a pleasant visit!
