New superyacht joint-venture

The Superyacht Cup and Informa Plc form partnership to create world Superyacht Events Group

In the wake of the hugely successful Superyacht Cup 2007 event held last month Palma, which attracted 52 of the world’s biggest sailing Superyachts, a new joint-venture has been announced between the Superyacht Cup and Informa plc.

Announcing the joint-venture, Jessica Sutherland, General Manager of IIR Middle East & Asia, who will be heading the new business venture, said: “Combining the world’s leading superyacht show - The Monaco Yacht Show, with the world’s leading Superyacht Sailing regatta creates enormous synergies and opens up exciting opportunities to develop other Superyacht events - shows, conferences, forums, regattas - all around the world. In 2009 we will hold the inaugural Abu Dhabi Yacht show, and our plans for the future incorporate new events in Asia, the US and the Caribbean.”

The Superyacht Cup, now in its 12th year, is the biggest regatta of its kind for the largest and most luxurious sailing vessels afloat. The Superyacht Cup (SYC) organises annual regattas for sailing superyachts in Palma and Antigua, as well as launching a new event for 2008, The Superyacht Cup Transatlantic Challenge.

Andy Treadwell, appointed CEO of the new Superyacht Cup joint company by event co-founders Patrick Whetter and Spike Thompson, added: “The Superyacht industry is growing at up to 25% per annum, and increasingly, industry participants - owners, skippers, designers, builders, brokers, suppliers, and media - are looking for events that are more interesting, more interactive, and conducive to the development of their industry. It does not get more exciting than participating in a series of races with up to 60 superyachts, where crews, boats and equipment are viewed and tested in live conditions. By partnering with the Informa Group, we will now have the resources we need to constantly improve the quality and reach of our events, and to develop new regattas and other projects we have been planning over the past year. But the over-riding consideration will always be the interests of the owners and all the industry players, so as to ensure their full co-operation and participation”.

Informa Plc is the largest publicly-owned organiser of conferences and training courses in the world with an output of over 12,500 events annually. The group also publishes over 2,500 subscription-based information services including academic journals, real-time news and structured databases of commercial intelligence. Informa is also the owner of the Monaco Yacht Show, the world’s leading Superyacht Trade Show, and the Abu Dhabi Yacht Show, a newly-launched superyacht show for the Middle East region.

Informa also own the leading group of Maritime and Transport events and publications, which includes Lloyd’s List, Lloyd’s Maritime Academy, and over a dozen exhibitions and conferences such as the Shipbuilding and Repair Contract Management Seminar.
