New superyacht Marina in Barcelona

Vilanova Grand Marina-Barcelona is the first marina in the Western Mediterranean conceived and designed exclusively to accommodate and provide all-round services for megayachts and superyachts. Strategically located in the Western Mediterranean near Barcelona, it will be Europe’s most advanced superyacht marina, with one of the most complete, best equipped technical areas to carry out a full range of repair & refit services on long boats.

The new marina, which has entailed an investment of 33 million euros, occupies 100,000 m2, of which 30,000 m2 are allocated to the technical area, and has a capacity to accommodate 76 boats between 20 and 60 metres in length. Its specialisation in superyachts is indeed what makes this marina unique. It has facilities and services that cater for the specific needs of superyachts and megayachts. The distinctive features include concrete piers with a draught of up to seven metres, service bollards designed to provide the power output and volumes of water required by long boats, refuelling berths, private working areas, store rooms for every berth, exclusive areas and services, and a heliport.

The integration of the technical area into the marina itself clearly means considerable added value for Vilanova Grand Marina-Barcelona’s patrons. Sufficiently isolated, the technical area is equipped with state-of-the-art technology for handling repair & refit projects, for which national and international companies specialising in superyachts, and local auxiliary industry are contracted. Likewise, once it opens, the marina will have a team of marine engineers specialised in superyacht management who will act as Project Managers to coordinate these tasks.

One of the most outstanding features of the technical area is the travelift, capable of hoisting a boat weighing up to 820 tons. It is the largest in Spain as well as being one of the world’s largest. Being remotely operated, it provides a high degree of accuracy during manoeuvres as well as greater security. The dry dock will feature an area for workshops and two painting booths. Measuring 60x25 and 40x25, they are both 18 metres high and the top 6 metres are made of glass to reduce the visual impact on the landscape. The project also involves the construction of a 300-metre-long repair and waiting dock in addition to a heliport, which will provide owners with easy access to the marina.

Vilanova Grand Marina-Barcelona is being built in a controlled access area in the Vilanova port’s inner dock, which, in addition to privacy, ensures calm waters away from the daily hustle and bustle of the port. Also notable is the fact that the marina has been designed in compliance with the ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security) code and includes 24-hour surveillance equipment to monitor the entrance of people and goods through a CCTV system with night-vision cameras.

The location of the new marina in the proximity of Barcelona constitutes considerable strategic value and thus a great attraction not only for owners and captains, but for all companies involved in the superyacht and megayacht industry. Its ideal location in the Western Mediterranean allows patrons to easily reach the most prized destinations of elite yachting, such as Marbella, Majorca, Ibiza, the Côte d’Azur, Sardinia, etc. In addition, the port of Vilanova provides great advantages such as a peaceful environment, clear waters, good communications and, above all, close proximity to Barcelona and its international airport.

According to Xiqui Mas, president of Vilanova Grand Marina-Barcelona and the driving force behind the project, “Vilanova i la Geltrú fulfils all of our patrons’ most important requirements: the city provides for a wide range of cultural, gastronomic and tourist options yet still enjoys a peaceful environment, and communication with Barcelona and the airport are excellent”. He adds: “The marina’s strategic location is highly valued not only by our patrons but also by the sector’s companies, some of which have already taken an interest in establishing a point of sale and after-sales service at our marina”.

Vilanova Grand Marina-Barcelona is a new tourism and industrial asset for Catalonia and Spain. It is becoming a benchmark for 21st century port facilities given the marina’s specialisation in superyachts, the wide range of technical and personalised services provided and the demanding security criteria it complies with. Its aim is to become a worldwide reference point in top-class yachting. According to Mas: “The marina will help mitigate today’s shortage in Spain and in the Western Mediterranean of facilities designed and equipped to accommodate and service superyachts, especially if we consider the constant increase in the number of superyachts and megayachts worldwide, which translates into a growing demand for berths and facilities specialised in boats of this class”.

Being a marina specialised in superyachts, Vilanova Gran Marina-Barcelona caters for a wide range of services destined to guarantee comfort and satisfaction to patrons. Thus, the new marina, in addition to the mooring and technical area, will also feature a shopping area, where the main companies of the superyacht and megayacht industry will be located, as well as exclusive areas for owners and captains and a business centre. The premises will also feature a canteen for crew members and a car park with capacity for more than 150 vehicles.

According to its general manager Ignacio Erroz, “Vilanova Grand Marina-Barcelona’s greatest value is that it has been carefully designed and equipped to meet all the logistical requirements that owners, captains and crews could have in terms of their boats and navigation as well as their on-land needs”. To this aim, the marina will launch a new concept of the Hospitality Desk, providing 24-hour, personalised customer service managed by highly trained personnel capable of satisfying all the needs of owners and captains alike. As Erroz explains:“Through this service, we provide our clientele with personalised solutions such as flight and car booking, catering, provisions and florist services, medical and legal assistance, in addition to any other aspect related to leisure activities, such as shows, sports, golf, etc.”

The design, development, marketing and management of Vilanova Grand Marina-Barcelona is being handled by the company Marina Far Vilanova, S.A., which consolidates leading companies from three different sectors, namely construction company Copisa, prefabricated concrete manufacturer Hormipresa and Varador 2000, S.A., a boating company that provides management know-how about ports and technical areas.

The involvement of these three prestigious companies brings great recognition and authority to the Vilanova Grand Marina-Barcelona project and ensures that it will be implemented with the highest levels of accuracy and excellence. Berths at the new marina, for which construction began in 2006, are now on sale. The inauguration is scheduled for Spring 2009.
