With the help of a friend, he sailed it to Nova Scotia for the summer.After a couple of years, Bob left college to focus on his passion. He built a 38-foot schooner and sailed it from New York to Baltimore, where he took a job at the Owens Boatyard, advancing quickly through the ranks to become foreman. Eventually returning to the New York area, he worked at the Edgar Johns Shipyard in Rye and Minnefords in City Island, building minesweepers designed to detonate underwater mines during World War II. Bob soon joined the effort himself, enlisting in the U.S. Navy in the early 1940s.&nbsp;During 1947, shortly after returning from the Navy, the young boatbuilder established Robert E. Derecktor, Inc. on Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck, New York. Surrounding himself with talented employees who would continue to grow along with the company, over the years he expanded the yard, following the ebbs and flows of the boatbuilding business — transitioning from wood to aluminium, from cruising boats to race boats, from sail to power, then to larger yachts and commercial boats.Today, four <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/36" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Derecktor Shipyards (Company)">Derecktor</a>’s facilities span the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. from Maine to South Florida, offering vessel owners and operators everything from marina space to superyacht construction. Sanlorenzo has acquired share capital of Sea Energy, as it “continues to verticalise its strategic suppliers”.

Strong headway has been made in Amsterdam with the forthcoming <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6736" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus (Company)">Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus</a>, as construction moves forward. The first phase of the quay is being built and the process of making 22 hectares of extra land is still ongoing but taking shape quickly.&nbsp;The team will enter phase two, building docks one, two and three next month, with completion expected by June 2023. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> has announced their new project Scuola dei Mestieri (School of Trades), a professional training course for 18 to 30-year-olds looking to build a career in boatbuilding.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263034/image/large-67848c46907f1bd04f21730f85a281ec.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263034">The course combines theory and experience in the yard, with the programme offering classroom sessions and workshops to on-the-job training in production department. The course aims to create real career opportunities for participants, such as naval carpentry, deck fitting, engine mechanics, the list goes on.The first edition of the three-month course officially launched in March, and will be held at the “Don Bosco” Professional Training Centre in Forlì. After this first stage in Forlì, the Scuola dei Mestieri will move to Mondolfo and Sarnico in September to involve more young people in the new project. Robert Lama has joined the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a> team as a Sales Consultant based out of the Fort Lauderdale office.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/49166/image/large-e22efe6e2a46f17cc0ded2f7ce0609ea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/49166"> Lama began his career in the commercial insurance industry, purchasing a small firm and transforming it into Lama Insurance, which became one of New York’s largest brokerages. After selling the firm to First Niagara Financial Group, Rob was appointed as the company’s Senior Vice President, where he guided the Insurance Division with over $600,000,000 in annual sales. He also founded Lama Commercial Real Estate, where he negotiated site acquisitions for a number of large American retailers, including Walmart, CVS, and Rite Aid. During this time, Lama owned a yacht in Miami for his entire family to enjoy.&nbsp;After moving to Miami, Lama combined his love of yachting with his business acumen, establishing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5135" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miami International Yacht Sales LLC. (Company)">Miami International Yacht Sale</a>. Lama’s business and negotiation experience enabled him to find his niche in the sale of vessels over 30-metres. He now joins <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a> in 2023 after many years of successfully running his own yacht brokerage firm. Lama takes pleasure in finding the perfect yacht for his clients, and supporting them throughout the process.&nbsp;

After attempting to meet up during a very busy boot Dusseldorf, we finally had the chance to sit down with Nick Gelevert, Founder and CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a> over Teams in early February. Nick comes from a long line of yacht brokers, his grandfather Hans Lengers founding the Netherlands’ first brokerage. Today Nick is both the CEO of the ‘first Dutch superyacht charter company’ <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a> with seven international offices and an impressive portfolio of pedigree yachts, and the Sales Director of brokerage firm <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/359" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lengers Yachts (Company)">Lengers</a>. With expansion always on his mind, Nick has much in store for the boutique charter firm. SYT found out more. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262239/image/large-028247e85db04278e4d7d6c2adfec517.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262239">With a legacy of brokerage in your family, was it always your plan to become a broker?I was born and raised in the midst of the yachting industry, and of course it came to my mind from a young age that I might work in the industry as well. My grandfather started selling yachts in the 1970s and there was also a boat building business within the family, so yachting is truly part of my family heritage. When the time came for me to start my first business however, I decided to break from the family tradition and I founded a company within the real estate industry. I think it was partly a youthful rebellion – I was only 23 – but I quickly realised that I’d made a mistake not following my passion for the yachting industry.I had been an active and competitive sailor from the age of eight, racing every week, and of course having grown up within my family, yachting was truly where my heart lay. So I &nbsp;decided to pivot the concept I’d created within the real estate industry, and do something similar within yachting. The business became <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters</a>; the first AirBnB for boats. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/69988/image/large-e5de394c61cf3a6b29fbcc9408e9bf14.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/69988">So how did an AirBnB for boats transform into a superyacht charter brokerage house?In 2015 we launched the platform and were the first in the world to do so. There were some other early adopters but we grew very quickly, operating in 63 countries with 12,000 boats available for rent. It was a successful beginning but we quickly realised that in order to become a truly profitable business, we would need a huge operational network. Boats are nothing like houses; they need work, maintenance and expansive shoreside support.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/50182/image/large-00c42362b1bed144ada7b119cd9afc4f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50182">Why do you think that the company has done so well – how do you stand out from the crowd?At the same time as I was having these thoughts, clients from Lengers were generating leads and asking questions about Boatsters and enquiring if I could assist them with yacht charter. From these leads came a very organic transition into <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a>, where we began to work with crewed yachts above 20-metres. Not long after this transition, we took Boatsters offline and I focused my energies on the development of the superyacht charter business. Since that decision we’ve opened international offices, are managing some very exciting yachts and expect to double our fleet in 2023. The company is positive and profitable and with the direction we’re currently going, we will be one of the top players in the charter industry within a few years.&nbsp;I believe that our approach is what makes us stand out. We are a boutique charter company, and we don't have aspirations to be the biggest, we want to provide the best service to a limited number of clients. We have regular contact with owners, we offer a personal concierge service for onshore support, we are incredibly active and make our clients really feel how much we value them. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216778/image/large-e3b74dc8cf7cf04994e4b19dd6e7c678.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216778">What has it been like breaking into an industry that has been dominated by long standing and large companies, such as&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a>?When we set out we knew it would be like David and Goliath, but I have always enjoyed a challenge. My aspiration when we set out was to establish <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a> as the industry’s first Dutch charter house, just as my grandfather was the first Dutch broker. I am happy to say we’ve achieved that goal and now we are looking to the next challenge.&nbsp;The yachting industry has an obsession with being the biggest, with companies claiming ‘the biggest charter fleet’ or the most charters completed, but what does that actually mean for the client? Very likely it means an impersonal approach, with yachts being managed by a conglomerate rather than a person &nbsp;– we do not aspire to become that kind of business!&nbsp;What are your plans for the future for the business?The next stage is expansion. We’ve built a base from which the company can grow exponentially and my attention first will be to make sure that our services are the best they can be. We aren’t going to be accepting any and all boats to the fleet, but really making sure that the yacht is able to offer clients the best services, with a stable crew and good knowledge base.&nbsp;In 2022 we had a revenue of over €12 million and with an expansion into the full spectrum of services including crewing and management, I expect that to see a stable increase this year. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216755/image/large-6c1f9a59bba24e5170d83edfc3039cf0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216755">Finally, what advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur?Firstly, focus on an aspect of this industry and be the best at that aspect. There are so many generalists within yachting and what there needs to be is more specialists. Turkey-based builder VisionF has announced the appointment of Ali Tanir as General Manager.

The initial acquisition investment cost the Italian company around 40 million euros, while over the next three years, a further 40 million euros will be needed to craft new production spaces and an R&amp;D centre.&nbsp;This acquisition underpins the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group’s</a> ambitions and growth strategy, with this recent facility looking to enable them to increase their production by 20%. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group&nbsp;</a>CEO Alberto Galassi explains how this “acquisition keeps a promise” as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> “have big plans and picture a state-of-the-art production site from every point of view: worker well-being, positive social impact, and environmental protection.” The new space is conveniently close to their Forlì headquarters and Cattolica shipyard. Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> buyers were, on average, 56 yet post-lockdown years, this age now stands at 48 – a significant decrease that brings a “new mindset to the yachting industry”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/178254/image/large-41061535f69fe7ca1d2c1b710787f63e.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/178254"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> has found that their average buyer is not only younger but is now spending twice as much time on board, with estimates as high as 120 days per year. Novel technologies such as Starlink support this trend, as owners can stay connected near enough anywhere in the world.&nbsp;In regards to its sustainability mission in the superyacht sector, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> confirmed it is still on track to launch the first 50 Steel equipped with methanol fuel cells to power all on-board services next year; and in 2028, it will launch the first superyacht – another 50 Steel – to be powered solely by methanol. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/192118/image/large-739ebb232bb40646a582286340b4632e.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/192118">Read:&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/56805" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo to launch 'net-zero' superyacht in 2027 (2023-01-24 12:30:00 +0100)">Sanlorenzo to launch 'net-zero' superyacht in 2027</a>Looking forward, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> expects to see high single-digit CAGR, starting with a forecast for 2023 between €810-830 million, up by 11% from 2022. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> also expects its margin to increase significantly, with an EBITDA margin equal to or greater than 19.5% in 2025.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> plans to invest between €143-155 million over the next three years. It will also expand its current portfolio of models from 26 to 36, comprising 17 in the yacht business unit, 8 in the superyacht business unit and 11 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5648" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bluegame (Company)">Bluegame</a>.&nbsp;

In 1988 I was wrapping up an America’s Cup challenge and Nigel was finishing the build of a new yacht. We started chatting about what was next. As yachts were getting larger and more complicated, we felt clients needed an advocate to represent their best interests. We also believed there should be more discipline in terms of fiscal and time-related control imposed on the build process. And after 35 years it appears there was indeed a need!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/171475/image/large-def9b7fbcd7516e5756f79bc7fc282d0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/171475"> You’re a sailor and in the past&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a>&nbsp;was best known for its sailing yacht projects, but you’re now taking on more motor yachts with brands like&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>. Was this a straightforward transition and how does your role change between sail and power?&nbsp;When one considers today’s sailing superyachts and their relative systems, they have more complications than the equivalent motor yachts. For example, both types of vessels have engines, generators, HVAC, AV/IT systems, cooking and domestic appliances, desalination and sewage treatment plants, and so on. But on a sailing yacht there are also masts, rigging, captive winches, booms, hydraulic furling and tensioning systems and appendages like lifting keels – all in a hull that is usually less voluminous than a motor yacht. So the transition from a technical standpoint is quite straightforward, although it should be noted that we have been doing motor yacht projects for many years and so they are not new territory for us.&nbsp;In terms of role differences, in the sailing yacht world there is more focus on the nuances of sailing performance, whereas on motor yachts the performance is well defined and based on engine kilowatts, propeller designs and, of course, the hull shape. The interiors, outfitting, finish and quality are equally important on every superyacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/180780/image/large-1604c001b0dc9b9c1caaa60d0e99d298.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/180780">What kind of decisions can you make on your own and which require the owner’s approval?&nbsp;This depends largely on the involvement and experience of the client. In many cases, we have clients that are knowledgeable and have had a string of yachts before. In those cases, the client is often closely involved and brings that experience to bear, and it can be a very collaborative affair. Where a client is perhaps building for the first time, they may need more guidance. In either case, we present them with the options available in a clear and concise manner when a decision is required and recommend the one we feel is the right choice. This gives the client the benefit of our experience and the requisite information on which to base an informed decision.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/92787/image/large-25fbaa062214a0955512eecbe552c80e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/92787">Do ‘involved’ owners make your job easier or more difficult?&nbsp;Having a client closely participate in the project typically makes it more memorable for them as they are really creating their vision. In turn, this makes it more enjoyable for the entire team. Designing and building a yacht is a terrific endeavour and may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so we strive to make it a rewarding experience for the client. We have developed great friendships with many of our clients that outlast the build process. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/68864/image/large-d01918c154c9386a1eba29b93edea26b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/68864"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a>&nbsp;offers yacht construction and management services. Does it make more sense if the same agency does both?&nbsp;When we started <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a> in 1988, we didn’t have a yacht management division. However, once we had a few yachts ‘under our belts’ it became abundantly clear that there was a requirement for post-construction support the and formalising that support in the form of a yacht management division was a service that yacht owners needed. As the vessel progresses from the build phase to the operational phase, having one company providing both services makes for a seamless transition. Not least because by that stage we have a long-standing relationship with the client, we know the vessel inside and out, we have all the data, drawings and manuals, and we know which design decisions were made and why.The rules and regulations surrounding vessel navigation and operation have also increased exponentially and the burden is such that captains and crew require shore-based support. Furthermore, the client benefits from the continuity <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a> offers; crew inevitably come and go, but we are the common thread and institutional knowledge about the yacht and the programme. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/75757/image/large-814590a2342fc3180dd4d70ca59bd2d7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/75757">Do you bring in your own preferred suppliers and/or subcontractors for new-build projects, or is that always up to the shipyard?&nbsp;To ensure there is no perceived conflict of interest, we remain fiercely independent. However, over many years of operation we’ve developed strong relationships with quality suppliers, manufacturers and vendors and can recommend those to the shipyard. We also have real-world experience as to how the equipment performs at sea. However, it is the shipyard that has overall responsibility for the construction process and provides the warranty, so they ultimately decide which suppliers and subcontractors are the best fit and those they prefer to work with. &nbsp;What would you change about the way we work in the superyacht industry?&nbsp;The elapsed time from the first conversation to the yacht being handed over can be many years. As an industry, we are always seeking ways to be more efficient and shorten the time required to build one of these masterpieces &nbsp;while maintaining the high quality standards expected. The other challenge is how to build yachts that can operate in an environmentally friendly way. Emissions are being lowered. We need to continue that trend to protect the marine environment we all so enjoy.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217714/image/large-e37cd890a97c5e166adce7d9d371918b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217714">Beyond the technical qualifications, what are the personal attributes needed to be a successful owner’s rep?&nbsp;On the personal side, attributes such as honesty, integrity, patience and respect. Being a good listener is also profoundly important. Other key qualities include staying focused, open-minded, nimble and the ability to adapt. Managing expectations is the most challenging aspect of the job. As these projects become larger and costlier, there are many facets to consider and with sometimes differing agendas, so the ability to develop a team with members sharing a common goal, is fundamental.&nbsp;Lastly, the experience of having been to sea in a multitude of yachts in wide-ranging conditions is enormously helpful. (Company)">Codecasa</a> Jet 2020 is the brainchild of Fulvio Codecasa, who called me to collaborate on his futuristic project. Merijn de Waard sat down with Lars Windhorst, owner and Founder of the Tennor Group that owns <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5275" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (Company)">Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG)</a>, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/53385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug Shipyard has been saved by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft shipyard (2021-07-16 19:15:00 +0200)">which has recently acquired the German shipyard Nobiskrug</a>. The pair discussed the motivations for the purchase, the plans for the legendary shipyard and how Windhorst plans to position the shipyard to continue to push innovation and build world-renowned superyachts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208143/image/large-2595aee26279ea40c7adacd4114a3b2b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208143"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a> shipyard was founded in 1905, working on the construction of mainly barges and commercial vessels. Gradually the yard moved into working on custom cruise liners and by 1997 the shipyard had segued into the superyacht sector, launching the 92-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/338" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tatoosh92.42m (303'3&quot;)Nobiskrug2000">Tatoosh</a> in 2000. Over the subsequent decades, the shipyard became known for the construction of innovative, technologically advanced superyachts, such as the 142.81-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4450" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sailing Yacht A142.81m (468'6&quot;)Nobiskrug2017">Sailing Yacht A</a> and the 80-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Artefact80.0m (262'6&quot;)Nobiskrug2020">Artefact</a> launched in 2020.&nbsp;In April 2021 the news was released that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a> had filed for insolvency, citing “critical developments” on yacht construction, consequences on investment and profitability as some of the causes for the proceedings. In August it was announced that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/53575" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lars Windhorst completes Nobiskrug takeover (2021-08-20 08:45:00 +0200)">Lars Windhorst had come to the rescue of the shipyard</a> and in Monaco the yard once again had its own stand positioned in front of the Yacht Club de Monaco, in a show of strength for the new management.&nbsp;So my first question is, why did you buy&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a>, and what is your idea and your plan behind this acquisition?About a year ago we hired Philipp Maracke as CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5275" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (Company)">FSG</a> and that action solidified our commitment to make the shipyard a sustainable success, no matter the resources in terms of capital commitment. While the heritage of the shipyard and the increasing prospects in the market were a major part of this decision, this was also fuelled by the fact that we got the right management team into the company. Philipp brought in people who he trusted to make the venture a success and I trusted him to see that end.&nbsp;When he came onboard in October 2020 I had the feeling that we had the right person in the role. He had the motivation, the passion and the commitment to do it and I said “OK, I will support you all the way and if you find something which makes sense, is lucrative and will help us grow and fulfill our vision to build something bigger, more sustainable and profitable, we will do it.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/98799/image/large-9a54de6d47c002319e951295f26172fa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/98799">He came up with the potential acquisition of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a> when there was first rumour of them being in trouble in March/April 2021 and it made sense to me. There are two areas in shipbuilding where you can still have margins and can potentially make money. On one hand you have more complex, technologically advanced vessels such as research, naval and military vessels. Anything relating to innovation, energy technologies and the like is already covered under <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5275" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (Company)">FSG</a>’s market. The other area however is superyachts and we are currently in another boom for that industry and so the timing made sense to us.&nbsp;In addition, this is probably one of the first times in the last 20-30 years that a well-established, high-end brand with a strong track record came on the market, which in itself is a rare event. In my opinion, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a> is one of the very few shipyards in the world that has the skill and capability to build large fully customised superyachts. It has the infrastructure and the reputation and almost everyone knows the name and in addition most of the staff have remained with the shipyard which has retained their level of expertise. I believe we were the only bidder to offer to take over all the employees, except the steel building department which we don’t need because we have that trade at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5275" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (Company)">FSG</a>.&nbsp;We see this as a forward looking investment, where we will grow rather than consolidate. We need the know-how and the resources of those employees to facilitate the growth that we want to enjoy over the next few years. So that's why it was a rather easy decision to jump and move into this sector. The company is 100 percent owned by me and between Philipp and myself it was a very unbureaucratic and quick decision process. We are very pleased that we were able to win the auction and buy <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203683/image/large-6d8021c836d0ab4368cc45757972e89f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203683">Did you ever consider building yachts under&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5275" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (Company)">FSG</a>, and had the&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a>&nbsp;opportunity not arisen, might that have been something we would have seen?It was on our radar and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5275" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (Company)">FSG</a> was already involved with the industry in a few ways. If, for example, you look at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/44" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abeking & Rasmussen (Company)">Abeking &amp; Rasmussen</a> 98.4-metre superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5752" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aviva98.4m (322'10&quot;)Abeking & Rasmussen2017">Aviva</a>, we built the entire hull because they did not have the capability in-house to do so.&nbsp;Due to the expertise of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5275" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (Company)">FSG</a> in large scale steel construction it is known worldwide and so yes, we were thinking about it but it is hard to break into the industry without a brand.That is another reason why <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a> is perfect for us, because there is a real synergy between the two companies and we can build on the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a> brand. We currently have two world famous yachts out there, one is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4450" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sailing Yacht A142.81m (468'6&quot;)Nobiskrug2017">Sailing Yacht A</a> and the other is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Artefact80.0m (262'6&quot;)Nobiskrug2020">Artefact</a> but we know we have another one or two orders coming in for truly innovative vessels. We will build on the reputation and show in the coming years that there is much more to come. There is more that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a> will bring to the market, with high end, super high quality and very individually complex, technologically advanced yachts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/207041/image/large-c5e596c1b037840fdf438d6b4b86ba09.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/207041">And in terms of size, is there a minimum or rather a limit to what you will be building?We would not say no per se but we will start at around 60 metres and go right up to the largest sizes, with the capability to build vessels even toward 170 metres.How about the existing projects? Are they all going to be completed by&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a>? Or is that still ongoing conversations with clients?At this time these are still ongoing conversations. We know that some will stay and others are yet to be decided, but we also have a pipeline of new projects which will soon be announced.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/196920/image/large-8556f6fcaf442229c8b5a199cc0094b8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/196920">So in terms of speculation building, is that something you believe in as well? Is that something you would be interested in?I do not think it is necessary to build on speculation with the current flow of the market and it is certainly not our current strategy. Over the next few months we will come into a situation where we have to select what we can do or decide to increase capacity because while we still have some capacity at this time, I see that quickly filling up. If we only do a small percentage of our current pipeline we will be fully loaded very soon.And coming in now as a shipyard owner, what in your view can still be done better in the industry, where is there room for improvement?I cannot pretend that I am the inside advisor for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a>, but what I know personally from my own experience as a charterer and customer is that style and technology are hugely important. These will be the cornerstones of our philosophy for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a> and we want to retain the super high end German mark of top quality engineering inside and out. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/194843/image/large-3033b2e6be8b18837ae863c9e8bf456f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/194843">Are you also going to be actively involved as well? Will you use your own network with clients and in the negotiations of contracts?Absolutely, and the good thing is that if I talk to fellow entrepreneurs or billionaire friends who are keen to buy yachts it is a very natural and pleasant conversation. The topic is enjoyable and it does not cause me or my companions pain or stress to discuss, it is an exciting topic. I will continue to do this through my vast and very extensive global network and we have already started to harvest the fruits of these very valuable conversations.Do you expect younger people to begin to get involved in yachting, especially with younger tech-based businesses emerging?&nbsp;I spend about a third of my time in the US and we are very well connected in Silicon Valley, probably more so than anyone else. I did a talk last week with 40 or so tech entrepreneurs and introduced them to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a> and the reaction was very positive, with many of them looking to visit the shipyard. The world is also opening up, allowing people to travel even more.I do believe that young tech entrepreneurs who made a lot of money in the last two years are definitely a key target group of ours and we are extremely well equipped to serve them. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Artefact80.0m (262'6&quot;)Nobiskrug2020">Artefact</a> is a fantastic example of that, she is a complex, technology focused and innovative yacht that is environmentally conscious, quiet and low emission – exactly the type of vessel young people are looking for. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/191672/image/large-c737c5720a07dccff7ad6931446109d5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/191672">On that point, how is&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a>&nbsp;going to be involved with sustainability, which is obviously very important, especially for the younger generation?As I said I am not an aficionado of this industry, but as far as I know there is no other yacht in the fleet today which can compare to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Artefact80.0m (262'6&quot;)Nobiskrug2020">Artefact</a> when it comes to environmental-friendliness. This yacht has been built to the highest environmental standards and is an example of how we will continue to build yachts. The good thing is that it is not the only business we have, overall it makes up five, maybe 10 percent of what we do, meaning that it is not such a huge investment with a lot of pressure to make money immediately. It is a business that we want to hold onto for the long term, to invest in and grow.&nbsp;It also has more than just monetary value to us, it is a great asset to own, a fantastic brand but also a nice topic to talk about within our network. I will be able to help friends obtain the right yacht and I aim to hold the company for the very long term, grow it and ultimately position it at the top of the market.And in that sense is your investment partly passion driven as well? Because shipyards aren’t the easiest industry to make money out of…There is a passion there for sure, but it is really something which we want to build in a commercially viable way. Business can only be sustainable if it makes money and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a> will make money. The long saga of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a> insolvency has finally come to a close, as Lars Windhorst, founder and owner of the Tennor Group, which owns both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5275" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (Company)">Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG)</a>, took over the shipyard.
