Production of the motor yacht kicked-off in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/416" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocea (Company)">Ocea</a>’s Fontenay-le-Comte workshop, where the frames, partitions and longitudinals and the hull planing took place. The top deck is home to the wheelhouse and the captain’s cabin as well as an aft sundeck &nbsp;area. A couple of years ago I found myself in a position where I was perhaps lucky enough to join any other management company. However, I believed I could do better, as I saw an opportunity to innovate and enhance existing yacht management services. So I decided to start over by gathering together a team of highly skilled ex-colleagues from various sectors of the industry and create a new yacht management company to provide high-value services to serious clients worldwide. With over a decade of experience in the super yachting sector, I embraced this new challenge, which was far more challenging than anything I had previously undertaken and something I had never envisioned doing.As for the decision to be headquartered in Dubai, it was a result of several factors. Firstly, there was clearly a gap in the market for quality yacht management services in the region, which is supported by the rapidly developing maritime infrastructure and the increasing number of ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs) coming to the UAE. The existing saturation of yacht management and brokerage firms in Western Europe also played a crucial role in my decision. While there are some satellite offices here, there is a notable absence of independent and bespoke management companies specifically dedicated to serving this region.&nbsp;Additionally, my familiarity with the UAE further influenced my decision to base <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7335" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix Yacht Management (Company)">Phoenix</a> in Dubai. My previous commercial career and experience with several large superyachts, allowing me to establish strong roots and a deep understanding of the region. We are overseeing a major project and are in negotiations for a larger vessel, with additional plans to construct a large explorer catamaran.Additionally, there was a significant change in the organisational structure last year when I formed a partnership with Yousuf Al Hashimi during a yacht charter in the Caribbean. Following several discussions, Al Hashimi, intrigued by the superyacht sector and passionate about maritime activities, including participation in sailing regattas such as Cowes Week, decided to join <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7335" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix Yacht Management (Company)">Phoenix Yachts</a> as a Partner and Managing Director. The journey further extends to the Arabian Gulf, presenting a unique winter destination. The Gulf region's combination of an ideal climate, modern infrastructure, luxury lifestyle, cultural richness, and high-quality services makes it an exceptional superyacht destination.The Greater gulf region provides a unique type of adventure for those looking to try and explore new waters. This unique and distinctly different experience makes it difficult to compare the two regions directly.However, in terms of the amount of yachts in the region, I believe we will soon be able to compete with the Caribbean. As a result of continued government investments in marine infrastructure, such as those in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7371" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="NEOM (Company)">NEOM</a> in Saudi Arabia and that ongoing in the UAE, it is expected that more yacht owners will choose to station their vessels in the region, thereby increasing demand for quality yacht management services in the region.Moreover, there is an increasing need for high-end maintenance facilities in the Middle East to support the anticipated rise in superyachts. While such facilities are currently limited, regional authorities are actively working to address this gap. Recent updates to yacht charter regulations in the UAE demonstrate a commitment to advancing the yachting industry. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7335" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix Yacht Management (Company)">Phoenix</a>, alongside other key local stakeholders, has been a leading advocate for these developments.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331235/image/large-19425dc3700cb1849fe75cd8bbf4e154.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331235">How many of your clients are Middle Easterners versus Europeans, and how do the preferences of your Middle Eastern clients differ from those of Western clients?As for the demographic of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7335" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix Yacht Management (Company)">Phoenix Yacht Management</a>'s clientele, our client base is currently evenly split between Middle Easterners and Europeans. However, we are increasingly focusing on the domestic UAE market.&nbsp;This dynamic is evolving as the Middle East is a booming region. Over the last 10 years, the region has completely transformed. You can see ultra luxury developments in the marinas, hotels, restaurants plus then the rich array of museums and large international events. This change is not limited to Dubai; there has been significant infrastructure development in the rest of UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. This of course affected the regional yacht market.&nbsp;Previously, the largest superyachts (over 90-metres) were predominantly owned by Middle Eastern clients, while those ranging from 40 to 80-metres were more commonly chartered. Now, with regional developments and changes in marine law, more Middle Eastern clients are purchasing yachts in this size range. The 40.7-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1180" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCP Yachts (Company)">MCP</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13200" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hygge40.7m (133'6&quot;)MCP Yachts2024">Hygge</a>, previously known as the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1180" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCP Yachts (Company)">MCP</a> 40M Seaview, has been delivered to her owner by her builder, the Brazilian shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1180" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCP Yachts (Company)">MCP</a>, following her launch in June of this year. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331451/image/large-f86a5310ff40c90f9fed3c866959f8ff.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331451">The full-custom explorer yacht features exterior design and naval architecture both penned by the Dutch studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a>. “With limitations on length imposed by the yard’s facilities, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a> opted to go bigger rather than longer,” the studio explains.&nbsp;With a name that means “cosiness” in Danish, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13200" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hygge40.7m (133'6&quot;)MCP Yachts2024">Hygge</a>’s layout places the owner’s needs for expansive accommodation, social occasions, and multi-generational familial gatherings at the forefront. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331454/image/large-d16125438f0727353721135d64ed7853.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331454">Featuring interior design by Leonardo Rotsen, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13200" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hygge40.7m (133'6&quot;)MCP Yachts2024">Hygge</a> has a volume of 380 GT, which is “the largest volume to date for a full aluminium motor yacht built in South America,” according to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a>.&nbsp;She can accommodate as many as 10 guests across a seven stateroom configuration, which includes an upper-deck, forward-facing owner suite with his and hers bathrooms as well as a private terrace. Accommodation is also available to support a crew of 10. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331456/image/large-e6b046a606d1e93ead714748a5a5fc66.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331456"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack’</a>s decision to reposition the galley and laundry room to the lower deck portside means there is free space on the main deck midsection to support the four guest staterooms. Moreover, two additional guest staterooms are situated on the lower deck starboard side.&nbsp;“We split the lower deck into two areas,” Bart Bouwhuis, co-creative director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a>, explains. “Both sections have separate access and stairways allowing service to continue unimpeded across all decks, and guests to enjoy their time together in privacy. It also means the main deck is given over entirely to guest use.”Another standout feature of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13200" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hygge40.7m (133'6&quot;)MCP Yachts2024">Hygge</a> is her split-level wheelhouse on the top deck, offering a panoramic view for the captain. Formal dining can be had in the sky lounge, while the main deck aft paves the way for alfresco dining, and a private seating arrangement is located forward of the master suite.The owner opted for the cruising grounds of Brazil, Caribbean, and the Mediterranean, which <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13200" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hygge40.7m (133'6&quot;)MCP Yachts2024">Hygge</a> is well-suited to traversing, thanks to her semi-displacement hull that resembles a naval war frigate. The Mumbai Port Authority (MPA) now intends to self-fund its planned marina, according to local media sources. This newly announced plan moves away from the earlier proposal, to build on land through a public-private partnership (PPP) model.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/301383/image/large-60a90e3bd064fe7a4c5f69f5dc3ef4ea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/301383">Initially, MPA sought to develop and manage the marina at the port's Princess Dock via a PPP for 45 years. Despite two tender processes, with adjusted bid terms, the efforts failed to attract bidders. In the local press, Rajiv Jalota, chairman of Mumbai Port Authority, stated: "We are not developing it on land; we are developing it in the sea. Studies are at a very advanced stage and clearances should come through." As a stakeholder, we hope that the Mumbai Port Authority provides a sufficient land parcel alongside the marina for the development of world-class facilities and amenities. It is also essential that the marina maintains a 5-metre all-time draft to accommodate yachts over 30-metres in length."Unique geography and history&nbsp;The proposed site lies within the historic confines of Princess Dock and Victoria Dock, established in the 18th century during British rule. Facing limitations in expanding its cargo handling due to the typical evacuation challenges of a city-based port, MPA has opted to repurpose the waterfront for leisure and urban uses. This aligns with broader plans to regenerate Mumbai's waterfront.South Mumbai, where most of the port's land is situated, is one of the nation's most valuable locales. The planned marina is set to cater to a significant influx of luxury yachts. Currently, despite India's extensive coastline exceeding 7,500 kilometres, there are very few facilities for mooring luxury yachts. The existing infrastructure forces yacht owners to use inconvenient and inadequate makeshift arrangements near iconic sites like the Gateway of India.Attracting more yachts to the Mumbai areaJitendra Rami, Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1372" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="West Coast Marine (Sea Waif) (Company)">West Coast Marine Yacht Services Pvt Ltd</a> and M2M Ferries, stated that the Mumbai Port Authority has already conducted the first round of stakeholder consultations, which I attended, for the marina. Planned for a location outside the Princess and Victoria Docks, this marina will be situated adjacent to Cross Island, directly in front of the docks. The MPA is expected to conduct another round of stakeholder consultations soon. The establishment of a marina in Mumbai has been a longstanding demand of the industry, and we hope that this project will soon come to fruition.The development aims to transform the local economy by enhancing the area's appeal to tourists and yacht owners. With around 200 leisure boats typically moored near the Gateway of India due to the lack of dedicated marina facilities, the new marina aims to provide a world-class berthing option, equipped with comprehensive marina services.
