The Research Vessel (RV) Pegaso just made her debut in Monaco and gave the world a glimpse into her Global Mission for Marine Conservation. Her oceanographic capabilities are impressive: 5-person Diver Lockout submarine, Ice Class notation, fully commercial helipad, 10,000 nautical miles at 12 knots, Dynamic Positioning, wet/dry laboratory, and separate scientist quarters. The fourth yacht built for her experienced Owner, RV Pegaso is set to begin her marine science and exploration activities in the Mediterranean this summer and then head to the Pacific, via the Caribbean, in 2013. The vessel has partnered with Ocean Preservation Alliance (OPA) to assist in her unique vision of supporting the important work of restoring and preserving our oceans. During expeditions, RV Pegaso plans to study and explore protected marine reserves normally off limits to regular yachts. Expeditions on RV Pegaso are perfectly suited for special individuals that are looking for added adventure and purpose above a standard yacht holiday. Due to her particular future endeavours as an RV, her layout is slightly different from a more regular superyacht of comparable size. This is mainly the result of internal submarine bay, science laboratory, wet lab, and documentary production areas. Apart from the owner's quarters, which span an entire “penthouse” private deck with fore and aft terraces, offices and dramatic 360 degrees panoramic views, her five guest staterooms (one VIP Suite, four doubles/twin suite) can be found on the main deck, fore of the deck's central lobby.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139331/image/large-3e40ab83c9d2bf7cdb1639599f043966.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139331">This lobby is situated around the central spiraling staircase which connects all decks. The owner's deck can also be reached by use of an elevator, leading from the sun/helicopter deck below. The aft portion of the main deck has been reserved as submarine bay. With RV Pegaso's lower deck being mainly reserved for crew cabins, laundry room, galley, and engine and machinery control rooms, interior guest living areas and accommodations are situated on the main and upper decks.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139332/image/large-36745d7ff55a21f3487eb8921b0212db.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139332">The aft section of the bridge deck houses her large interior lounge and dining rooms, with additional casual seating and bar areas. The former also functions as a fully equipped cinema. Mark Berryman’s interior design feels both extravagantly luxurious and soothingly calm.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139334/image/large-f0546409163ba2a672b645f711b605b4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139334">The main sitting area area, a large U-shaped setup of light modern sofas around a set of large contemporary minimal table pieces, is inviting and intimate. The flooring is an absolute eyecatcher, consisting of wide strips of chocolate-coloured leather braided together to form an intricately patterned yet modern carpeting. This space was designed for a large company and is large without losing a sense of warmth. The colour palette is based on soothing dark browns of leather and light beige-brown tints of the woods and natural stone used for floors, wall paneling, ceilings and cabinets. A small game table can also be found here. With an intricate yet natural lighting scheme, the whole room is bound together into an atmosphere of contemporary hospitality. The saloon's main dining table is a friendly setting of a round central table with plush, modern dining chairs dividing this space from the lounging area by a set of low cabinets, creating a separate room yet leaving the luxurious sense of space intact.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139335/image/large-0a9f989817dddc9b2c5a2dda1f2eba1b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139335">The dining setting being situated starboard, leaves the port side for a second, smaller sitting area with a small bar. With the added artworks, both paining and sculptural, the character of the saloon feels like very well balanced but also pleasantly eclectic, like a collection of materials, furnishing and collectibles that have been gathered throughout the world yet blend remarkably well together with regards to shape and colour. Varying from intricately detailed, lifelike sculptures of animals to colourful, abstract paintings and tribal tapestries, art onboard RV Pegaso is as diverse and rich as will be her future expeditions. On the aft deck, a large al fresco dining area can be found, including a buffet, casual lounging arrangement and an additional bar.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139336/image/large-dcad6d357bfd44142cf353a50a9bb09b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139336">RV Pegaso's main deck guest cabins are all situated adjacent to one long corridor leading forward from the central lobby. This space is simple, modern and elegant with visual lines enhanced by woodworks in the walls, floors and ceilings. Here too, a collection of intriguing artwork can be found, silently welcoming guests on their way to their stateroom.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139337/image/large-678233acb1589efa0bdc99378b4dac63.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139337">All these staterooms have been fitted with luxurious en-suites and are designed in the familiarly welcoming style also found in the upper deck saloon. Being located on the main deck, views from all cabins are simply outstanding. Combining wood, bamboo and natural stone, all in a balanced warm colour palette, in a design that is minimal with ample amounts of detailing, texture and smart design elements, undoubtedly leaves guests with a sense of soothing comfort yet feeling invited to explore. This is key to RV Pegaso's design scheme and, inevitably, to her goal as a vessel: to unobtrusively and comfortably explore. Staterooms and en suite bathrooms are light, spacious and perfectly private. Using details of stainless steel and wide mirrors in the bathrooms enhances a sense of cleanliness and space, a perfect ambiance for daily rituals.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/139338/image/large-4a026e3478f4195981e3bab586840706.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/139338">RV Pegaso's sun/helicopter deck is an epitome of spacious luxury, with fore and aft sundecks. Through the central lobby, connecting the penthouse deck with the lower sun deck by staircase and private elevator, the master stateroom can be reached. And stately this area is, with truly magnificent surrounding views and and a round skylight right above the grand bed. Looking up at the skies from here during a night of one of RV Pegaso's endeavours must be simply striking. Speaking of the owner’s ambition for the exterior, Kristian <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7339" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pascoli International (Company)">Pascoli</a> explains, “The owner’s brief was clear, he wanted to modernise the yacht, bringing her into a contemporary realm and most importantly giving her a sleeker look.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357834/image/large-9c9cf477a5f051fce94d102ad8d64f14.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357834">From a general arrangement perspective there have been two significant changes. First, the extension of the yacht’s swim platform, which now acts as an additional exterior dining area, outdoor beach club, and watersports epicenter.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357840/image/large-26b334d6f8008a23b35ed84a0b81346b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357840">Additionally, the owner requested that the sundeck be transformed into a gym and spa deck, complete with an infra-red sauna, plunge pool, and dedicated massage space. This was accomplished through the creation of an enclosed and air-conditioned atrium which presented the unique design challenge of surrounding the space with floating glass panes that could be opened as desired. Taking this task on was the German engineering firm <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8180" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kreative Metallform (KMF) (Company)">Kreative Metallform</a> who designed a retractable system for the 360-degree floor-to-ceiling glass. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357843/image/large-811244606539abbf3e48e398332cc6d3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357843">With a volume of 1,979 GT and a near 13-metre beam, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/112" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Starfire73.0m (239'6&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2007">Starfire</a> has an impressive platform and excellent pedigree. Captain Paul Duncan explains, “The idea was to maintain that integrity while updating her to current standards. That meant opening up many of the interior spaces, increasing light to the interior, replacing multiple layers of window dressings with invisible silhouette blinds, and physically extending key windows.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357833/image/large-8a784ddcb232ec5902aca9ff5ef093ed.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357833"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/110" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Patrick Knowles Designs (Company)">Patrick Knowles</a> commented, “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/112" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Starfire73.0m (239'6&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2007">Starfire</a> had excellent bones and a strong aesthetic foundation. We respected her traditional envelope, while incorporating clean, transitional furniture with traditional silhouettes but contemporary finishes. The original seating featured satin silks, white silk carpets, velvets and velours – very formal. We moved towards textured, streamlined materials that are more relaxed while still elegant.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357844/image/large-0d5f384062226f07bb55cbf878472e9f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357844">For instance the yacht’s original saloon was divided between the seating areas and bar. This has now been opened into one functional space with a central seating area, games table to port that doubles as a desk or breakfast table, and lounge chairs to starboard that are a perfect spot to sit if you’re just passing through or waiting to disembark. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357837/image/large-1378067134a067f30765d6eced583d63.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357837">Optionality was an integral part of the redesign, particularly to create unique zones that guests can enjoy, in replacement of the three previous formal saloons. For example, the bridge deck bar has been transformed into an English style pub, complete with a booth and felt-lined darts cupboard.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357841/image/large-548168155a21b44b9c3da0d40c377e8d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357841">While these changes have been transformative for her interiors, the team has carefully honoured the yacht’s original DNA, particularly the fine <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/67" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zuretti Interior Design (Company)">Zuretti</a> wood paneling used throughout her interior. Paul Duncan adds, “We took a sensitive approach to modernisation – one that respected the yacht’s heritage without allowing it to feel dated. The original woodwork was particularly beautiful, and it would have been a disservice to erase it. Instead, we chose to complement it. By introducing warmer LED lighting and reducing visual clutter, the wood now sings rather than overwhelms. The result is a yacht that retains its warmth while offering dramatically improved brightness, visual access to all of the exterior spaces and the sea, and a vastly greater sense of openness.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357836/image/large-341acbc8f511427f78cf83d7a8e5bf92.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357836">Other such evolutions include the master suite with its attached, raised observation room which used to be an afterthought. This has been transformed into a private workout and observation area to enjoy the incredible panoramic views this forward-looking space offers.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357842/image/large-5d6ed25365897826e8a32ec0778051c4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357842"> <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357845/image/large-b6049aaef2848ce92c8188f254088985.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357845">The exterior decks have likewise been modernised with a new alfresco dining area introduced on the main deck aft, as well as on the newly-extended swim platform which can be transformed into a covered dining area right at the water’s edge. Both areas benefit from custom tables made for each space by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/333" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Finkeldei Upholstered Furniture (Company)">Finkeldei</a> Interiors. Customised elements include the his-and-hers closets, Lo &amp; Co’s Tubby Collection handles and upholstered panels in Ultraleather Tottori. While the over 40 metre segment continues to demonstrate healthy growth, the 30 to 40 metre category is experiencing a marked decline in new orders.After peaking at 375 new superyacht sales in 2021, the market recorded 195 new-builds in 2024. At the same time, deliveries have continued to rise, from 163 in 2021 to 228 in 2024 as shipyards work through a once-record backlog of orders. That backlog stood at 695 yachts at the start of 2024 but has since begun to decline for the first time in years.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/360142/image/large-0e57af53390af9de0374fcf22e4e9dda.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/360142">The clearest trend, however, is the divergence between market segments. New orders in the 30 to 40 metre range dropped by 20 percent between 2023 and 2024, while those in the 40 to 50 metre bracket rose by 28 percent. In total, segments above 40 metres recorded a 13 percent increase in new orders during the same period.“The market is moving towards a two-speed dynamic,” said Ralph Dazert during the session. “Buyers in the upper segments are continuing to invest, while the more accessible size ranges are seeing hesitation, likely due to broader economic uncertainties.”In the first quarter of 2025 alone, new sales of 30 to 40 metre yachts dropped dramatically from 35 units in Q1 2024 to just 15. Units above 40 metres also fell, from 36 to 26, hinting at a potential slowdown across the board, possibly influenced by tariff announcements and macroeconomic pressures.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/360141/image/large-9012db260b0ffe019d635576b6750ded.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/360141">Despite the shifting market conditions, Italy continues to dominate the superyacht construction sector. In 2024, Italian shipyards accounted for 120 new yacht sales above 30 metres, more than double the combined total of all other competing nations. As of 1 January 2025, the country’s shipyards held 371 projects in their order books, representing 53 percent of the global backlog.Notably, Italian projects are also growing in scale.
