Dutch shipyard Mulder announced a new strategic partnership with Luxury Yacht Group, aimed at expanding the brand’s exposure within the U.S. market.

<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="METSTRADE (Company)">METSTRADE</a> has been a cornerstone event for marine equipment and technology since its inception in 1988. Hosted annually in November at the RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre, the event draws professionals from over 130 countries. The upcoming 2024 edition, scheduled for 19-21 November, promises to uphold its tradition of fostering international networking and innovation.&nbsp;Rewind to the inaugural show that introduced the novel concept of providing a level playing field for exhibitors and a B2B-only visitor policy. The approach laid the foundations for exponential growth in both exhibitor numbers and visitor attendance. From the beginning, a hallmark of the show has been its country-specific pavilions. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/238529/image/large-6876d45fa447b9aeca37c76af8802edf.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/238529">“The show has grown organically over the years and has become an instant hit, from the first edition there was already a British Pavilion, and that has become part of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="METSTRADE (Company)">METSTRADE</a>’s DNA,” says Niels Klarenbeek, director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="METSTRADE (Company)">METSTRADE</a>. “Today, we have lots of marine industry associations that come to the show representing their countries.”&nbsp;The 2024 show will represent 19 major countries, with France, Italy and the USA boasting the most extensive pavilions. From countries to specific segments of the wider marine industry, 2005 saw another significant milestone: the first edition that introduced the Superyacht Pavilion. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/307698/image/large-e61d8d8e18804097a884f59a3449e570.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/307698">Klarenbeek reflects: “My predecessors decided to accommodate a certain area within the show dedicated to superyacht equipment, and that equipment zone became the pavilion we see today – it is by far the fastest-growing element of the show.”Fast-forward to the pandemic years, which presented various challenges, coinciding with Klarenbeek’s appointment as director in 2020. Despite cancelling the physical event that year, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="METSTRADE (Company)">METSTRADE</a> adapted with the virtual alternative, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="METSTRADE (Company)">METSTRADE</a> Connect. The Foiling Pavilion is expected to generate even more interest driven by the exposure of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/190" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="America's Cup - 2024 - 37th America's Cup Barcelona">America's Cup</a>. As a result, we have also formed a new Superyacht Content Board, an alliance between <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="METSTRADE (Company)">METSTRADE</a> and key trade associations in the superyacht industry representing all facets of the industry. Topics for the forum will include three main streams: innovation, sustainability, and professionalism. We are very excited about how this first edition, ‘Think Ahead,’ will play out, and it aligns with our longer-term strategy, where, in the following years, we will have even more targeted education and discussions, both in the forum and on the trade floor.&nbsp;What are the attendance predictions for this year’s event?We are expecting a record-breaking year. Last year, we had 1,540 exhibitors, and we're confident we will surpass that. For 2024, we anticipate over 1,500 exhibitors from 54 nations. We have witnessed some capacity issues for the past few years as we have limited space, meaning the Superyacht Pavilion has again been booked up quickly like previous editions. Our team is already working on the 2025 show as the last remaining hall in the RAI centre, which has yet to be used, will be opened for the show, creating a further 8,000 square metres of exhibition space. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/307700/image/large-1395e4a08cf1726cb86b63d446d8e4d2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/307700">How will you utilise this additional space in 2025?The expansion will allow us to accommodate the waiting list of exhibitors, but we will also place greater emphasis on superyacht refits. While the show is traditionally focused on new builds, this expansion allows us to showcase more from the refit and operations realm. We will introduce refit clusters, recognising that refits often happen in specific regions with their own ecosystems of subcontractors and suppliers. These clusters will exhibit together, giving owner-representatives and captains a comprehensive view of refit options. Sustainability has also taken priority, as reflected in our growing Sustainability Route, launched two editions ago in collaboration with the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5877" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Water Revolution Foundation (Company)">Water Revolution Foundation</a>. Last year, we had five participants on the route, and this year, we will have 15 participants showcasing sustainable verified solutions. I’ve had incredible moments like diving with whales in the Bahamas and forming great relationships with guests. Our crew’s growth and camaraderie have been rewarding, too. We have 19 crew onboard and 29 on payroll with rotations, featuring a diverse team from South Africa, Croatia, Poland, the Czech Republic, and even three Australians.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/320477/image/large-7a4e7457dedd55bb62424be69020b120.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/320477">What sets Loon apart as a unique charter experience?We run an extensive water sports program, including scuba diving and kite surfing, which attracts a specific clientele – mainly young American families who enjoy these activities. Since we’re a charter yacht, I emphasise secondary skills beyond the typical duties. For example, I want deckhands who can offer more than just maintenance skills. &nbsp;Our chief engineer, Alex, is an incredible guitarist and singer who performs during charters, fostering a relaxed atmosphere. By the end of the trip, we have such a great rapport with guests that we often host a barbecue and pizza party, creating a family-like vibe.It comes down to an all-around package – water sports, music, ambiance, and above all, the crew. About 80% of a great charter experience is the crew, while the boat accounts for the remaining 20%. Our crew is not your typical stand-in-the-background team; we have big personalities and love engaging with guests, especially Americans who appreciate our friendly approach.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/279467/image/large-3588e8d925e6b442dce4dbef0940f8c7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/279467">How has social media influenced Loon’s popularity, and what percentage of bookings do you attribute to these platforms?We started with social media back in 2017 when the owner bought the first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/448" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Loon67.5m (221'5&quot;)ICON Yachts2009">Loon</a>. I knew we needed to create some buzz, as few yachts were active on social media then. I jumped in with a camera and a drone, and as we acquired new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/448" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Loon67.5m (221'5&quot;)ICON Yachts2009">Loon</a> yachts, we ramped up our efforts, even adding a full-time videographer. We had a deckhand on the old <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/448" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Loon67.5m (221'5&quot;)ICON Yachts2009">Loon</a> who also did videography. He grew with the role until he decided to start his own business, and we brought in someone new who has been fantastic.Social media has been massive for us, especially Instagram and YouTube. We currently have around 240,000 Instagram followers on our <a href="https://www.instagram.com/motoryachtloon/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">@motoryachtloon</a> account, and nearly 200,000 on YouTube, reaching millions each month. Several crew members also have public accounts. For example, our chef, Dean, has over 100,000 followers on his Instagram, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/theyachtchef/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">@theyachtchef</a>. He was already temping with us on the old <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/448" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Loon67.5m (221'5&quot;)ICON Yachts2009">Loon</a>, and I brought him on full-time. Then when we needed a rotational chef, his former sous chef Nina joined us – she’s now a head chef with a big following as well, around 200,000 subscribers on YouTube and 50-60,000 on her Instagram, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/thecrewchef/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">@thecrewchef</a>.&nbsp;It’s become almost like a content-creating team, where we all collaborate, and our accounts support each other to rise together. This visibility boosts our bookability significantly, as many clients come to us knowing they want <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/448" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Loon67.5m (221'5&quot;)ICON Yachts2009">Loon</a> specifically. I estimate about 20 to 30% of our charters come from social media exposure. Interestingly, sometimes it’s the younger generation who discover <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/448" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Loon67.5m (221'5&quot;)ICON Yachts2009">Loon</a> on Instagram and recommend it to their families.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/270695/image/large-b5298e4c86bb74d240afbc6c7bf33bd4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/270695">Are there any challenges with the visibility Loon has on social media?There’s some scrutiny, but we keep things professional. We focus on showcasing the yacht and experiences without drama, steering clear of the reality TV pitfalls. Guest privacy is a top priority. We’ve never featured guests in our public videos.&nbsp;The YouTube channel actually grew from guest videos we were already creating, where guests are aware of the cameras and drones capturing their experiences. These are personal, capturing family moments and are kept private. That way, they can show these videos to friends, who might end up booking with us too. For our public content, though, we just use all the other footage – drone shots, scenic moments, and quick clips introducing the location while protecting guest privacy entirely.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/320819/image/large-7b9101b91104553f7f37e384af8200f0.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/320819">Can you share your plans for the next Loon yacht?For us, it’s all about creating a yacht with a fun, lively vibe – starting with a big swim platform and a spacious beach club. Then, we look at how many toys we can fit onboard, from the ski boat we have up front to the RIB tender. Scuba is also huge for us, so we’ll look for a yacht that either has a dive compressor or has room to add one. We really prioritise spaces that are made for activity and socialising – big family spaces, a cinema if possible, and outdoor spots. The cabins are important, of course, but they’re secondary to the fun and action; ideally, people won’t be spending their days in their cabins!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/320796/image/large-0ceeb4d72ca5186b1a0fd28b9f68d32a.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/320796">What are some of the popular destinations Loon visits?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/448" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Loon67.5m (221'5&quot;)ICON Yachts2009">Loon</a> is a dual-season yacht, with the Med and Caribbean, but we consider ourselves more of a Caribbean boat that visits the Med, which is the opposite of most in the industry. There’s just so much more for us in the Caribbean – great kitesurfing, amazing scuba diving with reefs and warm water. Last year, we did eight weeks of charter in the Caribbean, while many boats only manage a couple. We love the Bahamas, where we have a Thanksgiving charter coming up. The British Virgin Islands are another favourite, as well as St. Lucia and the Grenadines. We do the annual New Year’s trip to St. Barts, like everyone, but always put a unique spin on it.For the Mediterranean, we’ve spent whole seasons in Croatia – it’s the closest to Caribbean vibes you’ll find there, with flat water, great for stern tying, and some scuba spots. We also charter in the south of France and the Amalfi Coast, where activities are a bit more land-based. As CFO, I have developed a deep understanding of our financial landscape, which has been invaluable in my current role. We are already in advanced talks with an interested buyer, which is a testament to everyone involved in the project. Overall, the 50 Steel Grace is shaping up to be a defining model for our brand and we are eager to see how it will be received once it is launched in 2027. What are your main priorities for Heesen when it comes to the next year?We are excited for the year ahead and will focusing on the following areas: Innovation in design and technology is always at the forefront of what we do at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a>. We will continue investing in research and development, particularly in sustainable technologies that meet the market's evolving needs, while helping us incorporate eco-friendly practices. We are busy finalising the design of the 50 Steel Grace and are eager to enter the construction phase. One of our strengths is our ability to build yachts on speculation. In the 50-60-metre range, we have a unique advantage, as there are no other Northern European shipyards competing with us. This exclusivity enables us to provide exceptional value to those clients who appreciate Dutch craftsmanship and our top quality. Additionally, we are one of the few yards that owns its fine cabinet-making facility, allowing us to remain flexible and accommodate interior design changes requests even later in the construction process. (Astilleros)2004">For Your Eyes Only</a>.&nbsp;It is always exciting to sit down with female entrepreneurs and yacht owners, and particularly when those two passions collide. Omi Vajarodaya acquired her first vessel back in 2014 with the sole ambition to establish a new form of charter business in her home country of Thailand. Since that initial acquisition, Omi has gone on to establish her company Blue Voyage Thailand at the heart of the growing Thai charter market, with 13 vessels of all sizes in her fleet and ventures in yacht construction and marina development currently in the works. We recently sat down with Omi in Hong Kong to talk about her ambitious projects, the growth of her business and her own motor yacht, the 31.45-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/412" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Astondoa S.A. (Astilleros)2004">For Your Eyes Only</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/334345/image/large-b842b44f337fe0fd44131ffcd5810e0a.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/334345">What inspired you to start a business in the yachting industry?&nbsp;I underwent my studies in Australia and during my time there I had the pleasure of experiencing yacht charter for the first time and immediately felt that it was an amazing vacation. Over the years I travelled to Europe with friends and we spent time on yachts and loved it, but when I came back to Thailand there was no comparison. 12 years ago the Thai yachting sector was very underdeveloped, and the choices were limited for group trips. Like a lot of areas in Asia, there was no pre-existing yachting mentality; people didn’t spend time cruising around on the water, so there was a definite challenge in educating people about the opportunities.&nbsp;As a result there were also very few potential yachts that I would consider both up to standard and safe, so building the fleet and trusted suppliers has taken a long time.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/309922/image/large-0cb7eb91d245c90b405e5c152fca4c34.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/309922">There were also no real itineraries existing at that time. Most boating activities were short half-day trips to visit specific locations, like Ko Phi Phi Le Island where The Beach was filmed, or to go snorkelling from Pattya or Phuket. The idea of spending multi-day trips onboard yachts hadn’t been established so during the early period I spent a lot of time scouting out potential cruising and anchoring locations to build the best charter itineraries.Another major challenge has been to educate the government and investment companies, that yachting is a business worth investing in. When I acquired my first yacht I spent my life savings on it, there was no opportunity to get a loan because no bank could see the potential of this business sector – that has definitely begun to change and I have worked closely with the local government to begin looking at the necessary infrastructure to support a thriving Thai yachting industry. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/238056/image/large-9ef5ec27c37544112a05402f41eeccf9.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/238056">Moving to your largest yacht, For Your Eyes Only, what drew you to that particular vessel?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1494" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="For Your Eyes Only31.45m (103'2&quot;)Astondoa S.A. (Astilleros)2004">For Your Eyes Only</a> is the ideal charter boat in her size range I think and she really offers the kind of luxury amenities that you don’t see very often in Thailand. After buying the yacht I did a major refit in Thailand so now she has a beautiful spa with a dedicated masseuse and aesthetician who can do facial and body treatments etc. I wanted to offer the guests everything you’d find in a five star hotel. While she is only 32-metres, she has a nice sized Jacuzzi on the flybridge, with lots of exterior space and we have an inflatable ocean pool and slide, so there really is something for everyone. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/238099/image/large-4ea3740f1cc5e9ecb40d5360b2028b14.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/238099">Where did you do the refit and who did the design?The refit was completed at a shipyard in Phuket where I maintain and refit all of my boats. In regards to the design, that came from my own experiences and I wanted it to be tailored to the local and international clientele, so you can find both Thai and more Mediterranean influences. I have spent a lot of time in luxury hotels over the years and I take a lot of inspiration from my surroundings, so I like to be very involved in the design process.&nbsp;Do you manage to spend time onboard the yacht as well?I have spent quite a bit of time onboard over the years since I acquired her, and I aim to spend at least five weeks onboard over the course of the cruising season. From those experiences I am able to review the training of the staff and make sure that everything is to the quality that I expect – because when guests come to Blue Voyage Thailand I want them to walk away feeling that they have had a world class experience. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/237782/image/large-26578a1819deee019a856cfb76f383c3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/237782">Spending time onboard is also a great opportunity for me to relax with my friends and family and enjoy time on the water, which really is my main passion in life. Yachting offers unparalleled experiences and it gives me a huge amount of joy to share that with other people.Do you see yourself having more, larger yachts in the future?I am absolutely looking into the opportunities that a larger yacht might hold, and I think that something in the range of 45-metres would take the offering to the next level. I also think it would be a great opportunity for me to have a yacht that spends time in the Mediterranean and then the Caribbean, to open the business, but also my own cruising opportunities, further afield. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/237772/image/large-423657acce667392534553944d5506a1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/237772">Finally, are there any special areas in Thailand that you would recommend to yacht enthusiasts?Thailand is an amazing country, with thousands of tiny islands and an amazing marine ecosystem that has really been underrepresented in the yachting sector. I feel like an ambassador for my country in yachting because it is only beginning to get the attention it deserves. Enrico Chhibber sits down with&nbsp;Germán Frers&nbsp;and his son, Germán ‘Mani’ Frers, to find out about their yacht design supremacy.&nbsp;Germán Frers and his son, Germán ‘Mani’ Frers, are part of a prestigious family lineage of yacht designers that spans four generations. With strong roots in both Europe and Argentina, they have made significant contributions to boat building and yacht design for over a century. Known for their deep involvement in designing a wide variety of yachts, both Frers have a particular specialty in racing yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/333827/image/large-4740fc153bbba21dd72ca33581da11e3.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/333827">In a conversation with the two designers, it was evident that yacht design was a destined path for both. Germán credited his early commitment to familial influences, noting his father’s career in yacht design since 1925 and the sailing passion deeply embedded in their family culture. This passion for the sea was shared across generations, with many relatives being avid sailors, including Mani, who took his talents to the Olympic level.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/333828/image/large-783c11cf3ea85cd6880a37300dd6decb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/333828">Recalling his earliest memories of yacht design, Germán shared: "At home, we didn't have a TV because my father encouraged us to pursue creative activities. From a young age, I started building model boats at our home workbench." He added, "I naturally gravitated towards design, spending my summers in my father's office, where I began to actively learn and contribute to the craft." This early passion for yacht design not only led him to follow in his father’s footsteps but also to a distinguished career in yacht design.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/333824/image/large-521c6971950a02cbafb88ef269e3b0f3.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/333824">Regarding their working relationship, Mani revealed that he worked at his father’s office in Milan as a partner. However, they eventually split the companies around 2010, forming two separate entities: <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/171" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="German Frers (Company)">Germán Frers Design</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6718" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Frers Design (Company)">Frers Design</a>, which is run by Mani. Additionally, both Germán and Mani explained that they now live in different countries, with Germán relocating from Italy back to Argentina, while Mani remains in Italy working on unique full-custom sailing yacht projects. Some of the projects he has designed include the 66-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/34" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vitters Shipyard (Company)">Vitters</a> sailing yacht Alea, delivered in 2022, and the 85-metre in-build <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> sailing yacht, set to be the world’s largest sloop when it is delivered in 2026.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/333829/image/large-a676bf2cab8466ede3eb0c423ad07fee.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/333829">Even though they no longer work at the same firm, both father and son continue to collaborate on projects and keep in close contact. “If one of us needs help or collaboration, we work together,” explained Germán. Mani further revealed how he came to Italy: “I finished my studies and had two job offers. One was in San Diego for the America's Cup, and the other was with my father here to finish one of his yachts, as he had moved to Italy when he started working on the Moro di Venezia campaign. I planned to work in Italy for six months and then return to the America's Cup, but after the first project, another order came. After four years, I was fully booked with work and have been here ever since.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/4971/image/large-a23604826086608df470440b8d022840.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/4971">Germán, reflecting on his transition from South America to Europe, shared insights into his international experiences and major projects. "I often travelled to Europe to participate in regattas," he recalled. His early work at Royal Huisman, like the 51-foot Emeraude that competed in the America’s Cup, set the stage for larger endeavours, including the 24.72-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Belle Fontaine24.72m (81'1&quot;)Royal Huisman1982">Belle Fontaine</a> and the 24.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6893" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volador24.5m (80'5&quot;)Royal Huisman1982">Volador</a>. Furthermore, Germán designed a unique sailing yacht for the Austrian director Herbert Von Karajan, and among the first maxi yachts he crafted was the Bumble Bee 4 in 1978 for John Khalbetzer, showcasing his diverse portfolio.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/182133/image/large-0de615a96892f5a5dd348cca292ef235.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/182133">Discussing his long standing collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Nautor Swan</a>, Germán detailed the nearly half a century of partnership that began with his participation in the Fastnet Race of 1979. Since he began working with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Nautor</a>, Germán has seen the company undergo a series of transformations in ownership; initially, owned by a conglomerate of Finnish paper companies before being acquired by Leonardo Ferragamo. To this day, Germán is still involved in a series of projects, including two <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Swan</a> 128 model yachts and a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/YachtModel/13753" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Swan 80 Hybrid (2023)25.55m (83'10&quot;)">Swan 80</a> hybrid model yacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/249966/image/large-f7525e4ab2295af042ecd593b7444513.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/249966">Despite his immense experience in designing sailing yachts, Germán has also ventured into designing motor yachts. He has worked on the 26.81-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4910" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sirena Yachts (Company)">Sirena Yachts</a> Sirena 88 RPH series and the 85.2-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2474" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pacific X85.2m (279'6&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2010">Pacific X</a>. When asked how he transitioned from designing smaller superyachts to a large <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> superyacht, Germán explained: “The project came about because the owner had a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Nautor Swan</a> sailing yacht and wanted to transition to a superyacht. Although this was not our first motor yacht design, it was our first insight into a motor yacht of that size. Germán described transitioning to larger superyacht projects as both challenging and enlightening, especially in managing the expansive space and intricate architectural elements that differ markedly from sailing yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20155/image/large-235ac3fed713fb6f04778d3fade06a6d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20155">Having been involved in the sailing yacht design world for many years, Germán and Mani were asked how it has evolved over time. Germán began by discussing the changes in ratings for designing sailing yachts for regattas and how they have become increasingly flexible. "Now you have all the freedom in the world, which is amazing, as it means that the yachts are becoming more exciting and faster.” He further added that the use of materials in building racing sailing yachts has also changed, with composites becoming increasingly popular, substantially reducing the weight of the yachts. Mani observed the evolution from his father's time: “There were only three designers of sailing yachts: <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/52" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ron Holland Design (Company)">Ron Holland</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/342" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Doug Peterson (Company)">Doug Peterson</a>, and my father. They were doing most of the yacht designs. Then new generations came along, including myself, and the field expanded.” Mani continued, “I have a son, for example, who is designing in the office. The next generation starts younger and injects the scene with fresh ideas and enthusiasm. The beauty of yacht design is that you never stop learning unless you do the same thing every day.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/333826/image/large-b8558bc555e710f394cd493c199c1805.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/333826">The discussion then shifted to generational changes in yacht design among the three Frers generations: Germán Frers, Mani Frers, and Mani’s son. Reflecting on his relationship with his son and the impact of generational perspectives, Mani shared insights into their dynamic. “He often receives the same responses I got from my dad,” Mani noted. “When you're young, you see only about 10% of the picture; it’s not fully formed, yet it remains pure. As you gain more experience and integrate additional elements of yacht building, you begin to understand the entire scope.”Mani further emphasised that learning takes time and benefits from years of experience. "I've benefited from this since a young age. I first went to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> when I was 17, thanks to my father working on a project there. Now, I am working on designing the biggest sloop in the world."<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/320412/image/large-d4f020381def255b07380111226c7d0d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/320412">Regarding the 85-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> project, Mani further highlighted its innovative features: "We managed to incorporate the comfort of a motor yacht into a sailing boat. It features very innovative naval architecture, and can go sailing in silent-mode" &nbsp;As the conversation concluded, I asked both father and son about their favourite yacht they had designed, Germán immediately replied, "All of them." For Mani, it was the first yacht he designed, a 36-foot sloop called Red Red Wine, that was ahead of its time in terms of innovation. Luca Bassani’s evident passion for yachting, whether sail or power, and commitment to innovation have not diminished in the 20 or more years that I’ve known him. The marketplace has changed in that time, however. Demand for large sailing yachts has declined and many of Luca’s ideas, once considered radical, have been appropriated by other designers and builders, becoming more mainstream in the process. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a>’s own destiny was transformed when it became part of Ferretti Group in 2019. I was curious at the time whether being part of a larger organisation would dilute the disruptive streak that has always been part of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a> DNA. It’s a fine line and the semi-custom wallywind 110 aims to combine the best of both. Is it also a way of luring more owners into the world of sailing?Yes, because I think more good cruising sailing yachts is what the world needs right now; I mean both the world of yachting and the world of sustainability, as the only way to go around the world in a truly sustainable way is by sailboat. In terms of our strategic planning, it’s definitely a fast cruiser. When I started the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a> Class in 1999 as a way for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a> maxi yachts to race against each other within the framework of larger regattas, the boats became more racer-cruisers because everyone really enjoyed the racing and wanted to win. Today I think the word ‘racer’ puts people off and the market has shrunk, but there is still a reasonable market for performance cruising yachts. We know that after the last financial crisis the market for large sailing yachts decreased rapidly and didn’t recover like the motorboats. It’s still a difficult market, which is why I think we have to focus on comfort as well as speed.You say the sailing market didn’t really recover after 2008 – why is that do you think?First of all, it’s a generational thing. Younger people today want to get to where they’re going quickly, and sailing is not about that. Beyond that, sailing yachts have been hit by inflation more than the motor yachts because the production numbers are much smaller, so you don’t have the economy of scale. It’s understandable that if you’re not a sailor and haven’t grown up with sailing, when you have the means to buy a large yacht you want to make it a reasonable investment. I’ve always said that yacht owners feel guilty when they buy, so a way of justifying that sense of guilt is to spend less and get more, and with a motor yacht you get more volume for less money.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/330367/image/large-36284b1a25f02f91fb2ac317084f35f1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/330367">You’ve described the wallywind 110 as “the best&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a>&nbsp;sailing yacht ever delivered.” Why? &nbsp;&nbsp;Because in terms of performance it lacks for nothing. The other day <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12312" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galma33.42m (109'8&quot;)Wally2024">Galma</a> was sailing in 26-30 knots of breeze with one small reef in the mainsail and they were making 22-23 knots, which for a cruising yacht with no gennaker is a lot, so the excitement is there. But at the same time the boat offers much more comfort, mainly on deck where you spend most of your time. You have 80 square metres of lounging space, which is comparable to a motor yacht. The deck is flush with no steps, the seating is designed so you can be comfortable to windward or leeward when tacking, and the bimini remains under the boom so you can also be in the shade. This is something new in my opinion and represents the best possible compromise between comfort and performance under sail. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/333459/image/large-b2778f15f57da6e02f2a7c0df17565fe.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/333459">Image credit: Justin Ratcliffe<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12312" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galma33.42m (109'8&quot;)Wally2024">Galma</a>&nbsp;was built in Forlì on Italy’s Adriatic coast but the new&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti</a>&nbsp;facility in Ravenna will soon be fully operational. How will Wally production be organised in the future?I think we’re now placed to be able to streamline our production more efficiently. We are not going to transfer all our ranges to Ravenna, but for sure the wallywhy and wallywind series will be built there, while the wallytender and wallypower ranges will remain in Forlì because it makes more sense to build where you have the specialised facilities and personnel.&nbsp;You also have the bigger wallywind 130 and 150 in the pipeline. Will they still be full carbon?Definitely. Ten years ago we built 51-metre Better Place, which is full carbon and even with a big deckhouse is quite fast in light winds. There’s no way we’ll abandon carbon up to 60-65 metres, I would say. Actually, I don’t see any reason to build beyond that size, because then you become a kind of motorsailer and that’s not what Wally is about. Any bigger, if still you want a sailing yacht that performs well in all condition, you find yourself at the edge of known technologies and everything becomes more risky and extremely expensive. Beyond a certain size I’ve always said it makes more sense to have a fleet of yachts, so you have a comfortable, reasonably sized motor yacht, and a sailing yacht to enjoy the sailing part. That for me is the solution that makes most sense.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/252036/image/large-53fb6f24820fa77b17c19ace4f4bf5dd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/252036">You also presented the new wallywhy100 motor yacht in Cannes this autumn. Are we likely to see bigger models in the series that take advantage of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a>’s capacity to build in steel and aluminium?&nbsp;I hope so and we’ve have discussed a strategy to go bigger. But the whole purpose of design and innovation is to offer a better product; it’s not about change for the sake of it. I never set out to be a designer, but despite the fact there’s a huge choice of motor yachts out there I believe there are still some things that can be done better to improve the quality of life on board. This has always been my goal. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/252034/image/large-b4526e7d558d9e96a05a007c539115c0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/252034">As former&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti</a>&nbsp;CCO and&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a>&nbsp;MD, Stefano de Vivo was very much involved in the development of the Wally brand. How do you fill that gap now he has stepped down?You know, as a sailor it was Stefano who pushed to have <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a> become part of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a>. We became friends and built up a good working relationship over the last five years, so he will be missed. But as a matter of fact, he will continue to collaborate with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/166" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally (Company)">Wally</a> in a consultancy role on the sailing side. However, I understand perfectly that he has other and more important family commitments to attend to. &nbsp;
