Otam, builder of luxury high speed craft up to 80 feet, has launched its first superyacht recently at their shipyard in Genoa. The 35 metre Gipsy will be delivered to her experienced Italian owner within the coming weeks following her final sea trials and outfitting, ready for the summer cruising season where she will be presented at the Monaco Yacht Show in September. SYT visited the shipyard this week to get a closer look.
Both the exterior and interior areas were created by designer Tommaso Spadolini, who credits the driving force behind Gipsy’s unique layout to the defined vision of her owner. “The client wanted clean lines and a big volume with very defined areas for each use. His past experience in owning yachts simplified this process tremendously.”
Apart from the wheelhouse, the upper deck is entirely dedicated to the use of the owner. The apartment-style suite leads out onto a private aft deck that is fitted with sun beds and an intimate dining area. Guest traffic through this sacred area is eliminated by moving all exterior staircases to the starboard side of each deck. These hidden staircases add to the clean profile created by Spadolini.
As their first superyacht project, Otam was open to the idea of creating a unique product to the market. Matteo Belardinelli, Sales and Communication Manager at the shipyard, comments on the level of customisation that was involved: “The owner’s arrangement of the spaces on board is slightly off the beaten track compared to other yachts in this size range. Through this flexibility he was able to create a custom layout that is suited to his needs. The shipyard was able to deliver a superb product, and as a result of the client’s ambition, we are now even more excited about what is possible in our future projects.”
Another key feature on board is the oversized galley on the main deck. Located amidships, the galley separates the main saloon aft from the formal dining area which is located forward. The 52 square metre dining area is set in the full beam of the hull, a prime space often reserved for the master suite on board. Large windows on either side offers exceptional views for a unique dining experience.
The remaining four guest cabins are located on the lower deck and are comprised of two twin and two double cabins. A central corridor leads through to the crew area which is finished in the same quality and style as the guest accommodation. Crew wellbeing played an important role during the design phase tells Spadolini, and a series of corridors and access points to the exterior allows them to move freely throughout the yacht without having to disturb the guests.
Working together with Spadolini on the interior was Otam’s interior architect, Laura Mirabella, whose role it was to oversee the outfitting and final decoration of guest areas. Project manager Alessandro Cavanna was in charge of ensuring that the project was finished on time and budget.
During initial sea trials Gipsy reached a top speed of 20 knots, performance that is matched by her range of over 2,000 nm at an economical cruising speed of 11 knots.
