After a year of record-breaking order books, what does 2022 hold for the superyacht sector? We spoke with Paul Flannery, Chief Operating Officer of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6362" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYBA (Company)">International Yacht Brokers Association (IYBA)</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6626" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Centtrip (Company)">Centtrip</a>’s Director of Marine and Aviation, Edward Majdalany to get a business-end view of what the future holds.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217758/image/large-a15c37491c704f01a2319af85fc91d39.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217758">From dock boy to broker, via a 500-tonne USCG Masters licence, Paul Flannery has spent his life in the marine industry. Today, as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6362" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYBA (Company)">IYBA</a>’s COO, he enjoys an international view across all aspects of the sector he loves. As we speak, the industry has come through a tumultuous period from the initial dread of a world in lockdown to a boom for boatyards and brokers.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217757/image/large-16f2a31e66831110eebb38a6a9a97433.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217757">Changing perspectives on superyacht ownershipThe Covid-19 pandemic, Flannery believes, has helped change the image of the superyacht sector. “Prior to Covid, there was a tendency for people to look at a yacht and wonder, ‘Who did the owner rob to afford that?’ It’s a mindset that has come from media, movies and video games. When James Bond lands on a superyacht, it isn’t because the owner’s going to save the world, it’s because a villain wants to blow up the world. When you reach the highest level of Grand Theft Auto, your prize is a yacht. Neither image promotes yachting.”“But, with Covid,” he continues, “the world has recognised that yachts offer an opportunity for families and close friends to be together in an environment that is isolated, yet communal.” It’s a perspective that has changed how potential owners relate to yacht ownership, says Flannery.“People have learned that they can get on a boat with their family and a tutor and a satellite dish, and they can run their business and raise their family in relative isolation, surrounded by more enriching experiences than anywhere else on the planet.”That’s driven sales, of course, but it is also influencing designLuca Boldrini, partner in the interior design company <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4308" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="FM Architettura (Company)">FM Architettura</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/53570" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="A human approach: FM Architettura d'Interni (2021-08-19 11:30:00 +0200)">was quoted recently saying</a>, “Yachting has changed and it’s evolved from being a status symbol to a vehicle for your life and this has been accelerated by the pandemic because they’ve become more of a place for family.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6626" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Centtrip (Company)">Centtrip</a>’s Edward Majdalany agrees. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6626" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Centtrip (Company)">Centtrip</a> is the leading provider of multi-currency payment, treasury and expense management solutions to the superyacht sector. It supports over 70 percent of the very largest charter superyachts and a fast-growing portfolio of private boats. In his five years with the business, Majdalany has seen the market grow and change.“Yachts are travelling further and for longer,” he says. “At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6626" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Centtrip (Company)">Centtrip</a>, we see that reflected in the use of a wider range of currencies. It’s visible in the charter market, too. Not only are the largest boats fully booked for this year and into 2023, but they are being chartered for longer periods – three or four week expeditions, rather than a seven-day jaunt.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217711/image/large-2d27ab4d133ef0e49d8d9c266d92c021.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217711">Exploring new horizons, addressing new concernsWe’ve seen the surge in interest in destinations beyond the Med and the Caribbean. As reported in Superyacht Times,<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/54457" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Explorer yacht La Datcha in Antarctica (2022-01-21 08:00:00 +0100)">&nbsp;the explorer yachts La Datcha and Naia were both recently seen in the Antarctic</a> whilst <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6031" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Olivia O88.51m (290'5&quot;)Ulstein Verft AS2020">Olivia O</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/54413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Explorer yacht Olivia O in St Barths (2022-01-13 08:00:00 +0100)">designed for the North Sea, was seen in the more benign waters of the Caribbean.</a><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216163/image/large-6d534ab187497a8d1e15b5b822127fc4.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216163">Flannery sees this as an important aspect of the superyacht market in its own right, but also for driving focus on sustainability. “The increased interest in remote and unspoiled destinations has spurred a focus on sustainability and eco-friendliness because the world’s wealthy are not interested in going to the far reaches of the planet, trampling all over it, spilling oil, and leaving empty plastic bottles,” he says. “They want to go in, and see, and slip out again invisibly.”The superyacht version of take only memories, leave only footprintsUltra-high net worth individuals (UHNWIs) want to see what’s never been seen – the “explorer” aspect – and they also want to bring that information back for the good of humanity, says Flannery. That same scientific mindset and eco-concern is key to driving greater sustainability within the sector.As Paul Flannery says, “It is the world’s ultra-high net worths that are willing to invest in bleeding edge technologies. They don’t want to feel guilty about their pleasures and they’re trying to figure out a way to use their wealth to good purpose.”That view was reinforced at last year’s Explorer Yacht Summit where <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2985" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="EYOS Expeditions Ltd (Company)">EYOS Expeditions</a> founder Rob McCallum noted, “They’re [new owners] making money younger and have more length of life to enjoy their investments. Owners want to minimise their footprint; they don’t want to be greedy about exploring, but to tread lightly and make a difference. They do this through science, conservation, development and encouraging sustainability.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/209523/image/large-9d76b2895138f2cd4903261dfc9a86c2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/209523">What will that look like in reality?The drive for sustainability can be seen in all aspects, from the renewed popularity of sailing yachts (like the 106.7m <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4795" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Black Pearl106.7m (350'1&quot;)Oceanco2018">Black Pearl</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>’s soon-to-launch Project <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7500" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco Y721127.0m (416'8&quot;)Oceanco2022">Y721</a>) to growing demand for hybrid propulsion and Fast Displacement Hull Forms (FDHF).“You can see the change in different construction materials, different propulsion, different design for greater efficiency. It’s an initiative that has truly taken hold,” Flannery observes. “These changes start right at the top, with the buyer,” Majdalany says. “Their concerns drive the changes in design and construction. And there’s a healthy degree of competition, too. Where once owners might have boasted about size or power, they now compete on their yachts’ green credentials.”Naval architects like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a> are promoting more streamlined designs while <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a>’s B-Zero project is exploring the use of solar panels to extract hydrogen from seawater.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">&nbsp;The Italian Sea Group</a> has recently announced the installation of over 5,000 solar panels in its shipyard to reduce its CO2 emissions by 1,200 tons per year.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/103511/image/large-a012e6fefc1ffda667b5e2f87552fd09.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103511">Sustainability will be the biggest trend affecting the superyacht sector in the coming year, Flannery feelsIt will also be its biggest challenge. Last year, the Spanish superyacht refitting &nbsp;group MB92 released a report – The Future of the Oceans – that called for serious change. “The cost of inaction is evident and will be extremely dire for our oceans and industry,” MB92’s president and CEO Pepe García-Aubert said at the time.&nbsp;MB92’s report emphasised that the next 10 years will be crucial for the future of the oceans, but it also highlighted how the industry’s innovations can and will flow down through the rest of the maritime sector.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7500" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco Y721127.0m (416'8&quot;)Oceanco2022">Project Y721</a>, widely published to belong to a American tech entrepreneur, is perhaps an example for the future. As Flannery says, “Whoever does own that boat has gotten really serious about making it as technologically impactful and environmentally friendly as possible, and that’s the case with all of these big boats.”&nbsp;“<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6626" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Centtrip (Company)">Centtrip</a> supports many of the largest yachts in the global fleet,” Majdalany says, “and we see the trend towards exploring pristine destinations in an eco-friendly fashion. Whether we’re providing those boats with multi-currency cards and international payments, or – in a small way – supporting sustainability through paperless payments, we are meeting the demands of a demanding and eco-conscious market. Australia-based shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5437" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Boat Works (Company)">The Boat Works</a> is further expanding its superyacht yard with more sheds and a hardstand to the three-year old site.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263491/image/large-1355aa13df453d647321c4746b5ebd56.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263491">The foundations have already been laid and the concrete poured into the marine precinct for the fifth stage of their investment plan. The technicians working there spend a lot of time messing about with yellow models in towing tanks. But they also do much more, such as training crews using kinematic motion machines that can be programmed to simulate virtually any kind of sea conditions and navigation scenarios. Or testing emerging fuels and power systems in a prototype engine room of the future to find the ideal balance between sustainability and efficiency.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263165/image/large-7434d1499f8ec2db97c34096042c4a81.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263165">And then there’s additive manufacturing. Since becoming more readily available and affordable 3D printing captures fewer headlines, but it’s swiftly being integrated into everyday industrial workflows – including the yachting sector – and it’s safe to say we will see much more of it in the future. With the help of a friend, he sailed it to Nova Scotia for the summer.After a couple of years, Bob left college to focus on his passion. He built a 38-foot schooner and sailed it from New York to Baltimore, where he took a job at the Owens Boatyard, advancing quickly through the ranks to become foreman. Eventually returning to the New York area, he worked at the Edgar Johns Shipyard in Rye and Minnefords in City Island, building minesweepers designed to detonate underwater mines during World War II. Bob soon joined the effort himself, enlisting in the U.S. Navy in the early 1940s.&nbsp;During 1947, shortly after returning from the Navy, the young boatbuilder established Robert E. Derecktor, Inc. on Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck, New York. Surrounding himself with talented employees who would continue to grow along with the company, over the years he expanded the yard, following the ebbs and flows of the boatbuilding business — transitioning from wood to aluminium, from cruising boats to race boats, from sail to power, then to larger yachts and commercial boats.Today, four <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/36" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Derecktor Shipyards (Company)">Derecktor</a>’s facilities span the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. from Maine to South Florida, offering vessel owners and operators everything from marina space to superyacht construction. Sanlorenzo acquires share capital of Sea Energy

Sanlorenzo has acquired share capital of Sea Energy, as it “continues to verticalise its strategic suppliers”.

Strong headway has been made in Amsterdam with the forthcoming <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6736" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus (Company)">Dutch Superyacht Tech Campus</a>, as construction moves forward. The first phase of the quay is being built and the process of making 22 hectares of extra land is still ongoing but taking shape quickly.&nbsp;The team will enter phase two, building docks one, two and three next month, with completion expected by June 2023. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> has announced their new project Scuola dei Mestieri (School of Trades), a professional training course for 18 to 30-year-olds looking to build a career in boatbuilding.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263034/image/large-67848c46907f1bd04f21730f85a281ec.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263034">The course combines theory and experience in the yard, with the programme offering classroom sessions and workshops to on-the-job training in production department. The course aims to create real career opportunities for participants, such as naval carpentry, deck fitting, engine mechanics, the list goes on.The first edition of the three-month course officially launched in March, and will be held at the “Don Bosco” Professional Training Centre in Forlì. After this first stage in Forlì, the Scuola dei Mestieri will move to Mondolfo and Sarnico in September to involve more young people in the new project. As a world leader in the design, construction, and sales of luxury yachts, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> will share their expertise to the participants. We are extremely glad to be able to contribute in this way to the formation of a new generation of skilled workers.&nbsp;The three-month course is paid as if it were an extra-curricular internship. At the end of the three months, participants will receive certificates from both the company and the local government.

Ferretti Group has announced their new project Scuola dei Mestieri (School of Trades).

Robert Lama has joined the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a> team as a Sales Consultant based out of the Fort Lauderdale office.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/49166/image/large-e22efe6e2a46f17cc0ded2f7ce0609ea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/49166"> Lama began his career in the commercial insurance industry, purchasing a small firm and transforming it into Lama Insurance, which became one of New York’s largest brokerages. After selling the firm to First Niagara Financial Group, Rob was appointed as the company’s Senior Vice President, where he guided the Insurance Division with over $600,000,000 in annual sales. He also founded Lama Commercial Real Estate, where he negotiated site acquisitions for a number of large American retailers, including Walmart, CVS, and Rite Aid. During this time, Lama owned a yacht in Miami for his entire family to enjoy.&nbsp;After moving to Miami, Lama combined his love of yachting with his business acumen, establishing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5135" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miami International Yacht Sales LLC. (Company)">Miami International Yacht Sale</a>. Lama’s business and negotiation experience enabled him to find his niche in the sale of vessels over 30-metres. He now joins <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a> in 2023 after many years of successfully running his own yacht brokerage firm. Lama takes pleasure in finding the perfect yacht for his clients, and supporting them throughout the process.&nbsp;

After attempting to meet up during a very busy boot Dusseldorf, we finally had the chance to sit down with Nick Gelevert, Founder and CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a> over Teams in early February. Nick comes from a long line of yacht brokers, his grandfather Hans Lengers founding the Netherlands’ first brokerage. Today Nick is both the CEO of the ‘first Dutch superyacht charter company’ <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a> with seven international offices and an impressive portfolio of pedigree yachts, and the Sales Director of brokerage firm <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/359" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lengers Yachts (Company)">Lengers</a>. With expansion always on his mind, Nick has much in store for the boutique charter firm. SYT found out more. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262239/image/large-028247e85db04278e4d7d6c2adfec517.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262239">With a legacy of brokerage in your family, was it always your plan to become a broker?I was born and raised in the midst of the yachting industry, and of course it came to my mind from a young age that I might work in the industry as well. My grandfather started selling yachts in the 1970s and there was also a boat building business within the family, so yachting is truly part of my family heritage. When the time came for me to start my first business however, I decided to break from the family tradition and I founded a company within the real estate industry. I think it was partly a youthful rebellion – I was only 23 – but I quickly realised that I’d made a mistake not following my passion for the yachting industry.I had been an active and competitive sailor from the age of eight, racing every week, and of course having grown up within my family, yachting was truly where my heart lay. So I &nbsp;decided to pivot the concept I’d created within the real estate industry, and do something similar within yachting. The business became <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters</a>; the first AirBnB for boats. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/69988/image/large-e5de394c61cf3a6b29fbcc9408e9bf14.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/69988">So how did an AirBnB for boats transform into a superyacht charter brokerage house?In 2015 we launched the platform and were the first in the world to do so. There were some other early adopters but we grew very quickly, operating in 63 countries with 12,000 boats available for rent. It was a successful beginning but we quickly realised that in order to become a truly profitable business, we would need a huge operational network. Boats are nothing like houses; they need work, maintenance and expansive shoreside support.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/50182/image/large-00c42362b1bed144ada7b119cd9afc4f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/50182">Why do you think that the company has done so well – how do you stand out from the crowd?At the same time as I was having these thoughts, clients from Lengers were generating leads and asking questions about Boatsters and enquiring if I could assist them with yacht charter. From these leads came a very organic transition into <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a>, where we began to work with crewed yachts above 20-metres. Not long after this transition, we took Boatsters offline and I focused my energies on the development of the superyacht charter business. Since that decision we’ve opened international offices, are managing some very exciting yachts and expect to double our fleet in 2023. The company is positive and profitable and with the direction we’re currently going, we will be one of the top players in the charter industry within a few years.&nbsp;I believe that our approach is what makes us stand out. We are a boutique charter company, and we don't have aspirations to be the biggest, we want to provide the best service to a limited number of clients. We have regular contact with owners, we offer a personal concierge service for onshore support, we are incredibly active and make our clients really feel how much we value them. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216778/image/large-e3b74dc8cf7cf04994e4b19dd6e7c678.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216778">What has it been like breaking into an industry that has been dominated by long standing and large companies, such as&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a>?When we set out we knew it would be like David and Goliath, but I have always enjoyed a challenge. My aspiration when we set out was to establish <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6127" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boatsters Black (Company)">Boatsters Black</a> as the industry’s first Dutch charter house, just as my grandfather was the first Dutch broker. I am happy to say we’ve achieved that goal and now we are looking to the next challenge.&nbsp;The yachting industry has an obsession with being the biggest, with companies claiming ‘the biggest charter fleet’ or the most charters completed, but what does that actually mean for the client? Very likely it means an impersonal approach, with yachts being managed by a conglomerate rather than a person &nbsp;– we do not aspire to become that kind of business!&nbsp;What are your plans for the future for the business?The next stage is expansion. We’ve built a base from which the company can grow exponentially and my attention first will be to make sure that our services are the best they can be. We aren’t going to be accepting any and all boats to the fleet, but really making sure that the yacht is able to offer clients the best services, with a stable crew and good knowledge base.&nbsp;In 2022 we had a revenue of over €12 million and with an expansion into the full spectrum of services including crewing and management, I expect that to see a stable increase this year. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216755/image/large-6c1f9a59bba24e5170d83edfc3039cf0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216755">Finally, what advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur?Firstly, focus on an aspect of this industry and be the best at that aspect. There are so many generalists within yachting and what there needs to be is more specialists. Building the first Dutch superyacht charter brokerage: Nick Gelevert of Boatsters Black

The 57.8-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/162" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa S.p.A. (Company)">Codecasa</a> superyacht C125 has been sold. Construction began on the superyacht in 2020 as a speculation project and the hull was first seen in August 2022. She is scheduled for delivery to her owners this summer. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/215992/image/large-a74ab5b9a8c0727150091015036cf585.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/215992">The yacht C127 features a design from her builder in collaboration with Italian studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5407" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="m2atelier (Company)">m2atelier</a>. C127 features a fast displacement hull optimised to reach top speeds of 21 knots, and has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. She will be powered by twin <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/companies/caterpillar-inc" target="_blank">Caterpillar</a> engines.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/215991/image/large-6c56e8b98b106b675ad14f4003634c69.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/215991">She has accommodation for up-to 12 guests across one master suite and five additional staterooms. The <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/companies/codecasa" target="_blank">Codecasa</a> C127 superyacht will be equipped with a lift to easily access all of her decks, a large stern beach area with a folding door to open into a swim platform, a gym, and a swimming pool on her sun deck.

Rebecca, originally from England, brings over two decades of experience in the yachting industry to her new role. Prized as the “most extreme and advanced 80-HT yet” thanks to the client's specifications. The sold <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2612" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Otam (Company)">OTAM</a> yacht has an expected delivery in 2025.&nbsp;The owner, who is not just “an expert owner but also has experience as a captain,” supplied the Genoa-based shipyard with customised specifications, including expansive windows to envelope the boat with natural light and a “detailed list of technical and aesthetic requests.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263522/image/large-77da9293d81bfb2529b9c143f8a9323d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263522">The custom-built 80HT comprises a hull and deck, which will be laminated in full Kevlar, while the superstructure is constructed from carbon fibre. The result is an exceptionally strong and rigid structure, which is also lightweight for higher performance in terms of top speed and fuel consumption. “The part of architecture that interests me the most is found in sociology and ethics: it is about addressing a human being with human needs.” So says Francesca Muzio, Genoa-born architect and entrepreneur, and co-founder of celebrated interior design studio, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4308" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="FM Architettura (Company)">FM Architettura d’Interni</a>. SuperYacht Times had the pleasure of interviewing Muzio alongside her business partner and husband, Luca Boldrini, who is best known in the industry for his roles as Brand Manager for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/584" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pershing S.p.a. Since then, they have been responsible for over 150 bespoke design projects across 14 countries and 19 cities worldwide, covering yachting, hospitality and high-end residential projects. Prior to the birth of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4308" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="FM Architettura (Company)">FM Architettura</a>, which has an office in Milan and is headquartered in Ancona, Muzio carried the accolade of having managed the design of 112 superyachts during her stint as Creative Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN Spa (Company)">CRN</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/112" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Custom Line Spa (Company)">Custom Line</a>, of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a>. Fast forward to today, and Muzio has accrued more than 20 years of interior design experience, including recent projects with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> and Mandarin Oriental. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203589/image/large-d0fbe9bf6dedcff01d0498fae2d49179.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203589">Joining forces&nbsp;For Muzio, design has always been a collaborative exercise, with her early career alliances including cruise ship design legend Giacomo Mortola, Italian architect <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1208" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Renzo Piano (Company)">Renzo Piano</a>, and the design studio 5+1 Architetti Associati. If it is not fed, it will disappear, and it is something we need to sustain. We have a responsibility towards preserving our culture.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203592/image/large-081073200e2a6ec5b3aec60da9187778.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203592"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203597/image/large-acadff9bbff6cf890fedc1501d5f3f05.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203597">Safeguarding sustainability&nbsp;For both Muzio and Boldrini, this sense of responsibility also extends to sustainable practice in yacht design: an impulse which predated, but was encouraged by, the global pandemic. “The pandemic has made people understand that there is a need to safeguard our health, our minds, and our world. Architects and designers have been pushed to create something sustainable,” Boldrini says. As a consequence, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4308" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="FM Architettura (Company)">FM Architettura</a> is implementing bio-cabinetry alongside other sustainable practices.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203593/image/large-38f09b31118f806988a377c909a667f8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203593"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203596/image/large-4eecd49cd58539c1e5aff2bf089298c0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203596">Unfinished beauty&nbsp;As you might expect for someone with well over 100 superyachts in her portfolio, Muzio maintains incredibly high standards across all of her designs. This does not mean, however, that every project needs to have all the i's dotted and all the t's crossed. In fact, one of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4308" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="FM Architettura (Company)">FM Architettura</a>’s most recent projects represents a radical departure from concept of completion or closure in yacht design. As Muzio explains: “It is an expedition yacht for a gentleman and his family, and we will not finish this interior design, because it will be completed with objects that the owner will find on his travels around the world.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203594/image/large-4b115391fc4a6d7e81cae55ed4d7d24b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203594">As we slowly usher in a post-pandemic world in which travelling with your family embodies both the ultimate luxury and ultimate freedom, there are certain designers who are listening carefully to the needs of their clients and reshaping superyacht design accordingly. Here, Muzio offers the final word: “Memories are the most important design details that you can ever have on board, and these need to be collected. Onboard, her neutral and charter-friendly interior design comes from the drawing boards of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5483" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vasiliy Shprits Studio (Company)">Vasiliy Sphrits</a>. Built as an IMO Polar Code compliant yacht with an ice-classed hull, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6668" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="La Datcha76.9m (252'4&quot;)Damen Yachting2020">La Datcha</a> can operate with 40 days of full autonomy and is kitted out with a submersible, two commercially-certified and operated helicopters, two snow scooters and a fully-certified dive centre. Built on an <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ulstein Verft AS (Company)">Ulstein</a> offshore platform in Norway, the project was completed at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4297" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Malta Refit (Company)">Palumbo</a> in Malta after <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ulstein Verft AS (Company)">Ulstein</a> delivered the technically completed hull and superstructure to her owner in 2018. The 4,989 GT superyacht features an avant-garde design penned by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a>, while her <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4593" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Droulers Architecture (Company)">Droulers Architecture</a>-designed interior can sleep up to 20 guests in eight cabins and is characterised by exceptional deckhead heights of up to 2.7-metres. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6031" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Olivia O88.51m (290'5&quot;)Ulstein Verft AS2020">Olivia O</a>’s unique X-Bow hull shape was developed for use in unforgiving North Sea conditions. With her massive internal volume, the explorer yacht features a nearly fully-enclosed upper deck with full-height windows, a midship tender garage on the main deck, open pool area at the stern and a certified helipad. The wrap-around glass bridge is one of her most standout features that gives <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6031" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Olivia O88.51m (290'5&quot;)Ulstein Verft AS2020">Olivia O</a> its unique shape.

The 106.7m three-masted sailing yacht, Black Pearl, built by Oceanco and delivered to her owner in 2018, is the result of an evolutionary design by Ken Freivokh Design, Nuvolari Lenard and Villate De¬sign. A multi-level central atrium includes an all- glass lift that rises alongside the central mast, contributing to a feeling of vertical integration between the decks. Dykstra Naval Architects designed Black Pearl’s DynaRig carbon masts and sailing system. All 2,900 square metres of sails can be set at the push of a button in 7 minutes! BMT Nigel Gee collaborated with Oceanco to create Black Pearl’s hybrid propulsion system as well as other onboard systems such as waste heat recovery. In addition to wind power, she is powered by 2 x 1080kW MTU’s / 2 x 400kW electrical propulsion motors. Her accommodations include a master suite, 2 VIP suites, 2 double guest cabins and a full beam beach club, that is convert¬ible into a cinema.
