There are more restrictions to work with and varying factors to consider, unlike working with a blank canvas. While every refit is different, depending not only on the brief of the client, but also on the technical elements of the yacht being refitted, the yard has worked to create a largely streamlined refit process.“We have a standard order of operation,” shares Swen Westerdijk, Head of Refit at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/44" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abeking & Rasmussen (Company)">Abeking &amp; Rasmussen</a>. The process commences with an initial analysis, ensuring the team understands all that needs to be done during the refit; from there the most strategic way to go about the refit is planned out. Once the strategy and outline are ready, the refit goes into the engineering and procurement phase before everything is carried out and executed.&nbsp;The duration of this time, and the extent of each refit depends, of course, on the yacht and the owner’s wishes. While the process is standardised as much as possible, the execution and internal activities vary from yacht to yacht. “The key to a successful refit lies in thorough preparation before the work begins,” Swen emphasises.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/280121/image/large-a8b36c5277760081ecb6711350eaea7f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/280121">Current refitsTypically, the refit and services sector of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/44" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abeking & Rasmussen (Company)">Abeking &amp; Rasmussen</a> yard plans for two to three refits per year, yet the number heavily depends on timelines or delays in the supply chain. The latter, however, is something for which <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/44" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abeking & Rasmussen (Company)">Abeking &amp; Rasmussen</a> is well-prepared: the yard has spare parts inventory ensuring they are prepared and independent of supplier timelines.Currently, the yard is working on an extensive refit of a superyacht that was built at the very same facilities in the early 2000s. There is a logistical advantage in refitting a superyacht at the facility it was built, but more than that, there’s something magical about getting to build a project and also be granted the responsibility to refit it two decades later. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/8499/image/large-a5715887142df531d75fd512eb5c4327.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/8499">Refitting ‘foreign’ vessels&nbsp;Not all yachts that make their way to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/44" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abeking & Rasmussen (Company)">Abeking &amp; Rasmussen</a> facilities for a refit were built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/44" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abeking & Rasmussen (Company)">A&amp;R</a>. The team also undertakes refit projects of other vessels. “The differences are not actually as great as one might think,” shares Swen. “Should technical documentation be missing, we are able to create a digital twin very quickly.” Not only that, but the yard has ample in-house expertise, especially in design and project planning, which enables them to carry out even the most complex kinds of refit.In 2025, the yard refitted the 73-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/112" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Starfire73.0m (239'6&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2007">Starfire</a>. Swen shares how “the key to it being a successful refit was a clear project structure and close, ongoing communication between us and the client, owner’s representative and crew.” Regular meetings, transparent progress reports and centrally managed project management ensured that all parties were fully informed during all stages of the refit. “This open communication enabled us to identify challenges at an early stage,” Swen notes, “which in turn allowed us to make decisions efficiently and ensure each project is completed on time and within budget. The excellent cooperation between all the parties ensured the success of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/112" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Starfire73.0m (239'6&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2007">Starfire</a>’s refit.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/347943/image/large-5325bae30977acf57effd97cbdc68d77.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/347943">Refit challengesNo matter how big or small the project, each refit comes with its own set of challenges. Yet surprisingly, “the biggest challenge is not usually the technical work, but rather the combination of limited space onboard, existing structures and owner expectations,” notes Swen, “and doing so whilst adhering to time and budget constraints.”While every superyacht brings challenges unique to their layout and structure, they tend to fit into one of three categories: technical constraints, weight and stability requirements, and short dockyard periods. Other challenges that the yard runs into more frequently are the integration of new technologies and the classification and flag state regulations.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/34390/image/large-1f63d71ec224f5b040cf9fe05bc874e8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/34390">However, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/44" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abeking & Rasmussen (Company)">Abeking &amp; Rasmussen</a> is not unfamiliar with these challenges, and has various systems in place to navigate anything that pops up along the refit journey. This includes an initial comprehensive assessment of the project and what needs to be done, as well as getting all the stakeholders involved from a very early stage. Established in 2014, the company has over a decade of experience in the delivery of their premium tech, and is dedicated to crafting yacht experiences where technology and craftsmanship work together in harmony to enhance comfort, safety and enjoyment at sea. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397415/image/large-ea8c1696d8ca02546b0c4dd98dfca9ce.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397415">Call systemThe GEST is a service call system: “When owners or guests onboard want service, they can press the button, which sends a notification to the crew,” shares Lucie Hubert, Strategic Marketing Manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4943" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="YachtCloud BV (Company)">YachtCloud</a>. “Crew members accept the request, which turns the button green, so the guests know someone is handling it.” From there, a crew member will come to inquire about the request. Once completed, the crew marks the open request as completed and the button is once again ready to go.The purpose of the GEST button is to ensure privacy, “there is no microphone on the physical button, it’s something we don’t want to include precisely because of privacy. If you press it, someone will actually have to come to you”, Lucie adds. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397416/image/large-5254a21c41376a0e75f4b6f98a415eed.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397416">There is also a digital version of the GEST Service System, which works just like the physical button, but here there is a chat function. “You can send the notification, but also chat directly with the crew members and share your request right away.”The goal of the button, besides ensuring smooth seven-star service, is precisely that privacy. Instead of standard WhatsApp groups on yachts, the button ensures no personal information other than necessary needs to be shared. “It reduces those big group chats that we often see onboard yachts. Two years later, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4943" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="YachtCloud BV (Company)">YachtCloud</a> had sold their 100th button. “Three years ago, we sold 100 buttons to a single project,” Lucie recalls. From there everything has just grown really fast.&nbsp;How many call buttons each yacht orders, depends mostly on size. “We see two options,” notes Lucie. “The first one is that the yacht just wants it in common areas, such as the lounge or the aft deck. The second is that we see yachts who want a call button in every single room, including all the staterooms.” The type of buttons tends to be a mix between physical and digital “often we see the digital buttons for the staterooms and the physical ones for the common spaces.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397410/image/large-99a82fc3ec98842b421aecb0ce521275.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397410">Design &amp; craftmanshipThe button’s physical design is well in line with the luxury service it is designed for. Each button is completely customisable, “you can have a ring engraved, or the yacht’s logo or name, even the material is fully customisable,” Lucie notes. “You can have the ring on the button in 24K gold, stainless steel, dark or light bronze.” Even the leather of the button is customisable: “we had a client who wanted a specific leather. We said, ‘just send it to us and we’ll make it happen’, and we did.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4943" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="YachtCloud BV (Company)">YachtCloud</a> prides itself in their flexibility and ability to craft their product to their client’s ideal design. It is also where the company does their refurbishing “we are working to be more sustainable, and as these buttons are used daily, they can of course obtain damage overtime. We’ve introduced a system where buttons can be sent to the warehouse and the ring, leather, or any other element is fixed, checked, and sent back to the client.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397405/image/large-ed866489b68104d857921b411ec65394.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397405">Challenges along the wayNo successful product comes without its challenges along the way. “When we started, the battery life was a big challenge” shares Lucie. It allows guests to request service, drinks or whatever they need while giving them complete privacy when they don’t want to be disturbed. For Maite and her team that means helping with any type of request that they may receive. “Sometimes it’s helping someone book accommodation, sometimes it’s finding second-hand golf clubs or taking someone to the doctor. Since then, the marina has grown exponentially, with an emphasis on creating quality experience for guests and employees alike. “There has been a huge change in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a>’s development when <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6623" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocibar (Company)">Ocibar</a> took over marina management,” Maite says. “The company projects both commercially and on the staff structure were a game changer.”The impact has been visible throughout the marina, which is constantly busy, seeing most of the 32 berths occupied, as well as facilities being expanded and improved and the reputation of the marina within the superyacht community has strengthened. “We’ll have captains who are eager to return and make a quick call to reserve a berth. But we also get a lot of superyachts via referrals, like a captain who recommends <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a> to another captain.”&nbsp;Another important element of the marina is her security. With 24-hour surveillance and glass walls surrounding the entire premise, guests can feel safe and secure, as well as controlled dock access. While Maite finds that the port “has the perfect package,” the most important element of the work lies in the human element: “by being nice, providing good treatment and service to the boats, both in a technical and personal way.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396339/image/large-4fe39a4f831012eebfd1a87fd3917c28.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396339">Enabling growthAs <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a> continues to grow, maintaining a balance between innovation and experience remains a priority. “New and fresh ideas are always on the table but experience is the base that took us where we are,” shares Maite, “so we try to strike a balance between the two.” Commercial assistant Laia Vidaller, who only recently joined the industry, highlights how working in yachting has been “dynamic and unique, every day, I get to see different parts of the industry.”The philosophy extends across the entire team. Different personalities, backgrounds and generations bring varying perspectives, but everyone shares the same objective: continuously improving the marina and the service delivered to its clients. “Nani [the Sales Business Manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6623" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocibar (Company)">Ocibar</a>] is always running, he’s always one step ahead and has such a brilliant mind, this way of working has inspired me a lot,” shares Maite. "The growth of both the industry and the marina is already moving at high speed when caring about the environment," says Maite. "We can clearly see a huge commitment from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6623" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocibar (Company)">Ocibar</a>."“We’ve placed solar panels on all the buildings in the port, helping us with lighting across the facilities and along the docks,” shares Maite. Rather than pursuing narrow planning hulls, which are optimised for going fast, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5252" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alpha Custom Yachts (Company)">Alpha</a> decided on a semi-displacement hull. “These hulls are designed for liveability, efficiency and comfort. There is more interior volume, while simultaneously cruising at speeds it was designed to (i.e. 10-14 knots).”Cruising at the speed that the yacht was designed to do, also ensures high fuel efficiency and long range cruising, which sits in line with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/YachtModel/12554" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alpha Squalo 10030.02m (98'6&quot;)">Alpha</a>’s approach towards sustainability. “There’s a misconception in today’s market that, by adding more electronics and gadgets, you automatically create a better boat,” yet often the opposite is true. “The more complicated you make a vessel, the more things you create that require maintenance.” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5252" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alpha Custom Yachts (Company)">Alpha Custom Yachts</a> instead focuses on “creating systems that are durable, intuitive and reliable for long-term ownership.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/395758/image/large-1424f9925cdca3c1115877f949e5d9c4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/395758">While keeping the number of gadgets to a minimum, technology does play a crucial role in any <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5252" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alpha Custom Yachts (Company)">Alpha Custom Yacht</a>s vessel. “Technology is extremely important for us,” shares Roberto, “but for us technology means simplification.” Making elements more simple and functional makes for happy yacht owners. “It’s a mentality that extends directly into the crew’s workflow and maintainability. There is total silence onboard.”Another one of the senses <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5252" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alpha Custom Yachts (Company)">Alpha Custom Yachts</a> is especially considerate of is smell. “You can walk into a beautiful boat but if it’s humid or there are unpleasant odours, it ruins the experience.” The yard has noticed that many of the odour-related issues don’t actually originate from black or grey water tanks themselves, but from low-quality piping systems that begin to sweat over time. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/395761/image/large-f1870b9a00c455b1e44bcca22a5b9127.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/395761">To prevent this, the Squalo 100 has incorporated high quality piping systems alongside a positive-pressure make-up air system designed to continuously renew and purify the air onboard. “Approximately six times per hour, the entire interior air volume is renewed with fresh air.” The result is a refreshing onboard environment.The air-flow design onboard the yacht has also been thoroughly considered: “we maintain more pressure inside the salon than outside, so when the doors open, fresh air escapes outward and blocks hot air from entering” Roberto explains. Guests often want to know who is looking after them.The point is not to overwhelm guests with information. The point is to bring together the information they actually care about, in a way that is easy to explore.Where do you see onboard guest technology going?Daniel: I think the best yacht technology will become less visible as “technology”. It should just work. It should feel natural. Guests should not need instructions.People are used to very polished digital experiences in their normal life. When they step onboard a superyacht, expectations are even higher. But the solution is not to make things complicated. From the development of its new ULTIMA range to advancing solar-powered and near-zero-emission cruising technologies, the Polish shipyard is reshaping expectations of what a luxury multihull can deliver. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/393756/image/large-4ec8dde4d4c215d0156df3e50b608098.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/393756">Speaking about the future of catamaran superyachts, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> co-founder and CTO Nicolas Lapp outlined how changing owner priorities are influencing everything from propulsion systems and onboard comfort to material selection and artificial intelligence-driven sailing technologies.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394038/image/large-de1683fdbf2981d69e7999ae8abad7d2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394038">A new direction for performance catamaransAccording to Lapp, the ULTIMA range was born directly from client demand for greater speed and a more engaging cruising experience, while retaining the spaciousness and comfort associated with multihulls.“The ULTIMA range is really a response to what our clients were asking for,” explained Lapp. “They love the comfort and space of our catamarans, but many wanted more performance, more speed and a more dynamic experience underway.”“With ULTIMA, the goal was to combine the best of both worlds: the liveability of a catamaran with the performance closer to a monohull.” To achieve this, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> developed a sleeker hull architecture combined with carefully optimised propulsion systems designed to improve both efficiency and speed. The first ULTIMA 88 is capable of reaching 26 knots, with additional engine configurations planned for future models.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394028/image/large-7971dab87ae7b5ead04551be001adcea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394028">“The first ULTIMA 88 reaches 26 knots, but soon you will also see new engine configurations that will allow for even higher performance depending on owner preferences,” he added.Balancing speed, efficiency and comfort, however, presented a significant engineering challenge for the shipyard. “The platform is quite different from classic Sunreef catamarans, so it required a fresh approach on multiple levels,” said Lapp.One of the most notable developments was the introduction of stabilisation systems for the first time within the range. “For the first time, we introduced stabilisers,” he explained. “With this new architecture, it became essential to ensure the same level of onboard comfort our clients expect. This width also gives us a more usable surface for solar integration, which directly supports our energy strategy.” In addition to larger onboard spaces, catamarans benefit from shallower drafts and more efficient hull dynamics. “They require less energy to move through the water,” Lapp explained. “The engineering approach is different, but the payoff is significant: more volume and better Lapp. “It’s not about a single technology, but how different systems work together.” Among the most impactful developments are the integration of solar panels, advanced battery systems and energy-efficient air conditioning technologies, all aimed at significantly reducing generator dependency. “This allows yachts to significantly reduce generator use,” he noted.On sailing catamarans, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> is also incorporating hydroregeneration systems capable of producing electricity from the movement of the propellers under sail. “With the right setup and navigation profile, this combination can bring the yacht very close to zero-emission operation in real conditions,” Lapp explained.&nbsp;Solar integration itself has become a defining element of the shipyard’s design philosophy. “What makes our solution different is that the panels are not just added on – they’re fully integrated into the yacht’s structure,” he said. “The hull sides, superstructure, bimini, even masts in some cases.”By maximising available surface area for energy generation, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> is able to reduce reliance on conventional onboard power systems. “Instead of relying on generators, we can cover up to 100% of the hotel load directly from solar energy,” Lapp revealed. “When it comes to cruising, with the right navigation profile, like island hopping and smart energy management, it’s possible to navigate using close to zero fuel.”<img Lapp. “Beyond being sustainable, it helps reduce weight, which improves overall yacht efficiency and performance.”The shipyard is additionally replacing traditional plywood structures in certain areas with lighter PET-based alternatives, while exploring natural composite materials such as flax fibre. “We’re also introducing materials like flax fiber, which offer similar properties to composites but come from natural, low-impact sources,” he added.Looking ahead, Lapp believes artificial intelligence and automation will play a defining role in the future of large sailing catamarans. “One of the most exciting directions for large multihull yachts is definitely the evolution of sailing itself,” he said.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" sailing performance more accessible and easier to manage, even on larger yachts.” While details remain limited, he hinted that the shipyard will soon unveil further developments in this area.<img This also extends to the crew quarters and all external areas have been replaced with teak decking and a new application of external paint, including filling, fairing, and spraying.&nbsp;The exterior spaces onboard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1239" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Costa Magna44.5m (145'12&quot;)Proteksan1983">Costa Magna</a> have been redesigned and rebuilt, which include the spaces of the upper deck, transom, and flybridge.
