The State Government has begun work on plans to create a super-yacht manufacturing cluster south of Fremantle. Industry and Enterprise Minister Francis Logan said the cluster would be a part of a masterplan being created for the entire Australian Marine Complex (AMC) precinct at Henderson. “Western Australia is already home to the most innovative and experienced super-yacht industry in the southern hemisphere,” Mr Logan said.
“The State boasts several internationally acclaimed super-yacht builders, constructing quality vessels for owners all over the globe. “I believe the AMC is the perfect place to incorporate a super-yacht cluster to accommodate these exclusive vessels.”
The Department of Industry and Resources is currently working with industry on plans to develop a super-yacht manufacturing, repair, maintenance and upgrade facility. Superyachts are privately owned luxury vessels in excess of 80 feet ( 25m ) in length that are professionally crewed and cost between $5million and more than $300million. Annual worldwide production of these vessels has tripled over the past decade and competition for facilities to accommodate them has intensified, resulting in opportunities for new cruising destinations.
The national board of SuperYacht Base Australia - the body established in 1999 to develop Australia’s super-yacht industry - will meet in Perth next week to get a first-hand insight into WA’s substantial super-yacht capabilities. The Minister said SuperYacht Base Australia now had 33 members from WA, a reflection of the level of interest and potential in the local super-yacht sector.
“The super-yacht industry has the potential to bring big dollars to WA, but there needs to be a co-ordinated approach between industry and the various arms of government to develop the industry,” he said. “We are already working closely with Tourism Western Australia to make WA a super-yacht cruising destination of choice.
“WA is blessed with some of the most spectacular, safe and unique cruising regions in the world and offers a great alternative to traditional super-yacht destinations.” Mr Logan said the development of the superyacht sector would build on WA’s existing strengths as the leading marine industry State. It would also form part of the Carpenter Government’s aim to create sustainable economic opportunities beyond the current resources boom.
