She can carry 12 guests with berths for four people. The Proton 42 will be constructed at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6739" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Proton Yachting (Company)">Proton Yachting</a> shipyard in Harlingen, Netherlands. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/234617/image/large-0747d58381ce85a783506629a4186c30.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/234617">The Proton 42 is the ideal superyacht chaseboat and also offers a towing hook in the bow. The Lift3 F also uses brushless motors that allow for speed and ride stability, and paired with her wireless hand controller, allow the user to swap intuitively between speed and performance settings. All Lift eFoils are powered by a lithium-ion battery, resulting in a virtually silent experience without any harmful environmental impact. A full-HD camera recording system can be installed in the watercraft’s bow and another full-HD camera can be found on the information display. These allow for the user to film everything they discover, or to activate the integrated Action-Selfie-Cam. The board has an impressive 0.2 second response time between board and rider which gives the user more confidence and control. The aggressive rocker design assists the Awake RÄVIK S 22’s carving rails, so riders can carve without the nose of the board diving and allowing them to have deeper turns. The RÄVIK S 22 features a strong and slim design that is constructed to increase the power and response time. The board offers three riding modes with the option of eco, sport or extreme. The two seater NEMO 2 submersible measures in at just 61-inches high, meaning she neatly fits on the aft deck. A single lifting point means it can easily be placed on a flat surface without the need for a cradle or davit. NEMO has a low profile and compact footprint that occupies less storage than two Jet Skis. Many companies fail and every year more businesses are launched, only to close down a few years later.One business which has not only lasted but thrived, is the German shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3619" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachtwerft Meyer Gmbh (Company)">Yachtwerft Meyer</a>, an exceptional company situated on a tributary of the River Weser in the city of Bremen.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/250088/image/large-963371dbe12908d38b4892184567bc88.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/250088">The secret behind the business’ success may well be that it stuck true to its roots, retained the family feeling that is at its heart, and consistently innovated in composite construction, year in and year out for more than 28 years.We sat down with Jan Meyer, half of the husband-wife duo who have driven the company to success over the decades, to find out how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3619" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachtwerft Meyer Gmbh (Company)">Yachtwerft Meyer</a> has stayed above the fray.Can you share your entrepreneurial story, what was the origin of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3619" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachtwerft Meyer Gmbh (Company)">Yachtwerft Meyer</a>?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3619" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachtwerft Meyer Gmbh (Company)">Yachtwerft Meyer</a> as a company was originally started in the 1980s by my father at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1231" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Burmester (Company)">Burmester Shipyard</a>, which is now part of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>’s naval facility. In 1994 I joined the business and took over from my father, joining together with my wife Michaela Meyer who brought a huge amount of commercial expertise to the company.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/250087/image/large-1f21e2166c786f8e3533859f96a86526.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/250087">While my father was focusing on winter storage and small repair works by his own after we built the first superyacht tender – a 4.5-metre clinkered open sail dinghy boat – I realised this could be a business in itself.We have now delivered 120 boats from the yard, between superyacht tenders and fast boats made for the German Navy. We specialise in composite construction, working hard over the years to grow the team in a sustainable way and focus a large amount of energy on testing and development.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/250090/image/large-f485eacb75c6691ffa5255347b2349e7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/250090">How do you stay on top of your game in such a competitive field?Our main priority is to ensure that we always have the latest technology on hand at the shipyard. 15 years ago we were one of the first companies to have our own milling machine in-house, meaning we’ve never had to rely on subcontractors to move forward with our projects.&nbsp;In 1997 we installed the first spray shed on site which allows us to heat the air to 90 degrees and make the most accurate post curing for composite parts. In 2005, we founded Fibretech Composites in partnership with Jens Brandes for components for the superyacht industry, which analyses elements of composite materials and has helped develop the patented method for heating moulds which has resulted in a number of awards for the shipyard.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/250089/image/large-9983c2bd16a2bacd075f97bdfe54fedf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/250089">Today we are using sustainable materials for 10-15 percent of every boat. We have our own laboratory on site and for four years we have been working to ensure that these alternative materials are durable and reliable – it is this kind of innovation that keeps us cutting edge and I am always looking toward the future.What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced since you founded the business?&nbsp;Establishing the Silverline series, which has been designed in collaboration with Hamid Bekradi from HBD Studios, and bringing this idea into reality has certainly been a challenge, and a rewarding one – we have now delivered around 15 of this range.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/250084/image/large-e62088354aa3737fe4cda0f1a61a4712.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/250084">But also building the business that we see today from what my father originally built. We are a long way from the winter storage and repair work that we once were and that has really required a straightforward and honest approach.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/250092/image/large-c1c9f3bcb7bb080889b8683b7a2268a6.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/250092">How have you managed to balance that growth while retaining the brand’s family feeling?My wife would say that our partnership has created a business with a soul; we’ve created and managed it with our own individual fingerprint and that has kept us down to earth. Everyone that comes to our shipyard sees that the team here is treated with respect for their skills and abilities and even though we have more than 50 staff, everyone knows one another; it is these things that are important to us.It is also a credit to our teams that so many of our clients continue to return, the family feeling is in more than just the people, it's also the individual attention given to every boat that creates that sense.&nbsp;Many entrepreneurs fail, why haven’t you?Michaela and I have been careful over the years with the business strategy to take on the right partners and clients at the right time. Many people in this side of the industry forget what it takes to fulfil a custom project, particularly when working with external suppliers. An exciting announcement was made during the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2022">2022 Monaco Yacht Show</a>; <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4195" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Triton (Company)">Triton</a> has collaborated with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino International</a> and Dark Ocean DeepSea for its latest acrylic submersible, Project Hercules. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243917/image/large-22472b33a37f2216761cb6721302584a.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243917">Project Hercules is an evolution of Dark Ocean’s patent-pending elliptical nine-person AVA pressure hull, which overthrew the traditional bulbous pod often seen on submersibles for a more ergonomically sound and spacious design that doesn’t impede views or impact the experience of underwater excursions. The elliptical hull can still withstand depths up to 200 metres, and Project Hercules is expected to be able to travel at 8 knots, twice that of traditional submersibles, allowing guests to glide amongst schools of fish and larger marine life.&nbsp;“During the last 15-years, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4195" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Triton (Company)">Triton</a> has demonstrated its unrivalled technical expertise, through the development of a diverse range of uniquely configured submersibles, including the deepest diving craft in history and the versatility of our products, which have been used on numerous scientific and documentary filmmaking missions and thousands of dives at locations around the world by clients interested in exploring the ocean from the comfort and safety of a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4195" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Triton (Company)">Triton</a>,” Patrick Lahey, President of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4195" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Triton (Company)">Triton Submarines</a>, explained. “Project Hercules aims to focus on a new way for our clients to experience the ocean. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen</a> and the team at EOI have brought a fresh approach and new perspective, while John and the team at Dark Ocean have proven their capacity to design extraordinary submersibles, the result of this collaboration is ‘Project Hercules,’ the new definition of a luxury-performance submersible.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243916/image/large-88ab28d37a775e7db55100288a4e4c7d.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243916">The project was conceived as a way to break convention. Dark Ocean’s patent-pending design already expands the possibility by offering more space, ergo more luxury. The hull form is unrestricted and allows for the in-house – and partnered collaborators – to play with the interior space to fully enrich the experience. Rather than just having space for a pilot and two passengers, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4195" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Triton (Company)">Triton</a> submersibles can be designed as an open lounge with plush seating, throws and bags. Revolutionary.John Ramsay, speaking on behalf of Dark Ocean Design stated: “For fifteen years, the team at Dark Ocean has collaborated with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4195" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Triton (Company)">Triton</a> to create some of the most capable submersibles on the planet. By pushing engineering limits, we have progressively increased the capacity and depth of these submersibles, as well as enhance the overall passenger experience. With Project Hercules, the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a> contributed a refreshingly unique perspective on how the vessel could be configured. This insight, combined with their expertise in crafting luxurious spaces, has resulted in a submersible that is simply unlike anything else.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243915/image/large-fa6780227672bd1aba4ce7480185c82f.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243915">Project Hercules takes things even further and the triad – <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a>, Dark Ocean DeepSea and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4195" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Triton (Company)">Triton</a> – presented a number of configurations that offer privacy and outstanding relaxation. Thanks to this elongated hull form, Project Hercules can be split with two compartments; forward being reserved for two guests, who’ll be able to recline in plump oversized armchairs, while aft can be entirely closed off and has space for the pilot to sit and – importantly – a day head installed.&nbsp;During the press launch of Project Hercules, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a> commented: “I was initially reticent to even enter a submersible due to claustrophobia, but it took just one demonstration dive with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4195" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Triton (Company)">Triton</a> for me to fall in love with experience that submersibles can deliver. In changing not only the use of the submersible’s interior, but also the way it travels, there is little doubt in my mind this is a ground-breaking project.”Project Hercules will be equipped with four large thrusters that provide the sensation of swimming or gliding, rather than being confined to linear planes of motion. Triton has collaborated with Espen Øino International and Dark Ocean DeepSea for its latest acrylic submersible, Project Hercules. 

Project Hercules: The Espen Øino-designed submersible by Triton Submarines

One of the most intriguing smaller boats to debut at the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2022">Cannes Yachting Festival</a> was the Vandal Explorer, a 14-metre all-aluminium tender. Styled by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a> – best known for having designed some of the biggest superyachts on the water – and based on a foil-assisted catamaran platform by Canadian <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2363" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scott Hollers Jutson (Company)">Scott Jutson</a>, the concept originated with industry veteran Ben Mennem.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241010/image/large-bd49a0870ce82f5000db8677361d2da8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241010">“I’d been planning to build a boat like this for myself for five or six years,” says Mennem. “I wanted it to be of aluminium because it wasn’t worth tooling the moulds for a one-off; I wanted outboards so they can come out of water when not in use; and I wanted it to be as simple as possible.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241003/image/large-5c6cfba2bf6ecf28094354151dc33041.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241003">Mennem already owned an 8.5-metre RIB with foils and went to his old friend <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2363" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scott Hollers Jutson (Company)">Scott Jutson</a> to create the catamaran configuration based on the same principle. A discussion with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a> at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4337" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yacht Club de Monaco (Company)">Monaco Yacht Club</a> led to the Norwegian designer agreeing to take on the styling of the topsides. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241210/image/large-88f69478718abacdd713a9add37e853b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241210">“In a way, it’s the antithesis of what we normally deal with,” says <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Øino</a>, “but I loved the simplicity of it, the idea of really going back to basics and thinking about what you need and don’t need on a boat of this size.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241006/image/large-2054c737a3cd6a9425d23838be184a19.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241006">Both Mennem and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Øino</a> own Land Rover Defenders and the robust, functional design of the classic off-roader informed the design of the Vandal Explorer with its flat aluminium panels, chunky wrap-around fender and rugged handrails. The focus is on space and practicality rather than luxurious frills. The tender is launched by a simple, removable derrick and to avoid additional wiring there is no sound system on board.&nbsp;“If you want music, use a portable Bluetooth system,” says Mennem. “This is all about ‘glamping’ on the water!”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241011/image/large-80fb23fd05c2f02db230f7064fc7ec9e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241011">Built by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6860" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tenderworks (Company)">Tenderworks</a> team in the Netherlands, which has long experience of building custom tenders and chase boats for superyachts, Mennem and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Øino</a> each own a Vandal Explorer and both put their respective boats through their paces in the Mediterranean this summer.“I have over 150 hours on the engines now after cruising between Capri, Naples and the Amalfi coast,” says <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Øino</a>. “I can testify first-hand to the performance and comfort, and it’s great fun to drive. My experience this summer showed me that simplicity works every time. Sabrina, my wife, was sceptical at first – she was the one who christened the boat Bruttino, Italian for a bit ugly – but she and the kids are totally into it now.”“Critical to the initial concept was being able do the big jumps in the Med, say from Marseille to Alcúdia in Mallorca or Mahon to northern Sardinia,” says Mennem. “To do that you need the speed and range, but also the performance even in quite rough seas, which is where the asymmetric hulls and foils come in.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241008/image/large-13219f997c558d0360aef5cf0ecf5244.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241008">The catamaran platform is well proven by workboats all over the world, often in extreme conditions. Powered by twin <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5777" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yamaha (Company)">Yamaha</a> XTO 425 hp engines, the passive foils carry 35 percent of the boat’s weight, reducing fuel consumption by 25 percent while providing a range of up to 240 nautical miles. They also give a smoother ride, less spray, enhanced stability and better top performance with a redline speed of 40 knots or more.Designed to function as a weekend runabout, fishing boat, dive boat, superyacht chase boat or explorer tender, the Vandal Explorer has a six to eight person dining area, a double cabin forward, aft deck rain shower, interior day head with additional shower, a well-appointed outdoor galley and plenty of lounging areas, also on the flybridge. Menem’s boat includes a self-draining deck locker to take a couple of mountain bikes.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241007/image/large-fc29a897185048c6c89e5163271478f1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241007">“Sustainability was another consideration during the design,” adds <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Øino</a>. “Recycled aluminium is used in the construction and improved fuel efficiency means fewer emissions, but we also use silicon anti-fouling, solar panels on the flybridge and there’s an onboard incinerator to avoid black water discharge. We don’t even have AC on board and rely on strategically placed windows or hatches for natural ventilation, like the old wind scoops you see on classic yachts.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241009/image/large-a81f919f50273535db5b65d58ba532ae.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241009">For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Øino</a> the Vandal Explore is part of an ambitious personal project as he plans to cruise the entire Norwegian coastline along the Skagerrak, North Sea, Norwegian Sea and Barents Sea &nbsp;from Sweden to the Russian border &nbsp;in a similar vessel, perhaps equipped with hybrid or electric propulsion. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241017/image/large-033bf66cf1f71f46060b5988ec5d7bb1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241017">

Hedge fund manager Radenko Milakovic and his wife Kristina quietly acquired <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2266" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="J Craft Boats (Company)">J Craft</a> in 2007. The boatyard on the Swedish island of Gotland builds the 42-foot Torpedo, the fast runabout with chic retro styling that also serves as a superyacht tender or chase boat. The financier and entrepreneur has largely preferred to stay under the radar to date, but is now refocusing his energies on further developing the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2266" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="J Craft Boats (Company)">J Craft</a> brand and its product range.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/209658/image/large-a19e6a977b9cacdeff24dce2b5a29df9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/209658">What attracted you to&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2266" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="J Craft Boats (Company)">J Craft</a>&nbsp;in the first place?I came across the 38-foot Cabrio Cruiser, the precursor of the Torpedo that was designed and built by Björn Jansson, the founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2266" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="J Craft Boats (Company)">J Craft</a>. It thought it was beautiful and so I went up to the guy who was driving it and we got talking. He was Johan Attvik, who was promoting <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2266" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="J Craft Boats (Company)">J Craft Boats</a> in Monaco and Saint Tropez. I asked him if I could charter the boat for a month, which turned into two and I had it for the whole summer. The boat had twin <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1741" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yanmar Co., Ltd. (Company)">Yanmar</a> engines with straight shafts and very small rudders. Turning was difficult until she picked up some speed. I eventually got used to it, but there were quite a few hairy moments when I was thinking, “Hmm, this isn't good enough.” &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/209659/image/large-c07c6c670f4df6ee07a69efcb0ba0d5b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/209659">So how did you end up acquiring the company?My wife and I loved the look of the boat and by end of the summer I was interested in buying one, but I wanted to make some significant technical changes. Attvik told me he couldn’t sell me a new one because the founder was unwell and the shipyard had been mothballed. I ended up buying an unfinished hull and looked around for the best propulsion system for a non-expert like myself. People recommended the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo Penta</a> IPS pods because the joystick controls make handling simpler, so together with Johan Hallén, who was with Björn when he started out in 1999, we made two big holes in the back of the hull and put in a couple of IPS 500 units. She did over 50 knots flat out, but the steering was still terrible. I asked the naval architect how we could make it work: he said it would cost the same to design a new hull form as to modify the old one, so that’s what we did.&nbsp;Seeing that I was investing all this time and money, I started thinking I’d like to own the trademark. It wasn’t a huge brand, but it had a claim to fame because the the first Cabrio Cruiser was built for the King of Sweden. Björn had fallen seriously ill by this time, but I met with his estate and told them that I loved what Björn had done and that I wanted to keep the same spirit alive as the new custodian of the brand. The estate agreed to sell and I acquired <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2266" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="J Craft Boats (Company)">J Craft</a> in 2007.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/209653/image/large-d1bd4ce0a466fe89eb5fdab659aa92c0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/209653">How did the Cabrio Cruiser become the Torpedo?After the acquisition, we all took our time for a few months in order to define what it is that we wanted to improve on what was otherwise a boat we all loved. The hull had already been newly designed around the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo Penta</a> IPS propulsion system, so they were perfectly aligned. I wanted her to be cutting-edge technologically, but to look like a ‘57 Corvette that turned into an Airstream if you had to spend a night on board. But at the end of the day, she’s a day boat and we were not going to try and make it anything other than that. I certainly didn't want to create a mini yacht. She had to be fast and ‘leggy’ in the sense that she could cover long distances quickly and our boats have done Saint Tropez to Corsica, Ibiza to Sardinia, even Hong Kong to Hainan, and back. The first new-generation Torpedo, La Decadence, was <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/33736" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="J Craft Boats launches the J Craft Torpedo at The Monaco Yacht Show (2009-10-13 00:00:00 +0200)">unveiled in Saint Tropez in the summer of 2009</a>. Since then, we’ve delivered 19 others, including&nbsp;Garcon, tender to 87-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2684" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ace87.0m (285'5&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2012">Ace</a>, and Bourik, tender to 156-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5967" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dilbar156.0m (511'10&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2016">Dilbar</a>, and introduced the faster Torpedo RS that has the latest IPS 650 engines.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/209652/image/large-9fcf6fdc99da28305e11195045bd9f5b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/209652">What has been the hardest part of owning a shipyard?This is a challenging industry in that it is very cyclical, boom-bust in nature. Periods of strong demand are followed by deep and sometimes sustained troughs. At the same time, what I thought was striking, considering the sums of monies and types of owners involved, is the relative mediocrity of a lot of the management teams. While certainly better when compared to when we started a decade and half ago, I still find that this industry attracts a lot of what I call ‘chancers’, people who I believe would find it difficult to work in similar positions in other high-profile industries. I was running a hedge fund out of London and was used to dealing with high-calibre people, strong and dedicated professionals, and so when I first arrived on the scene it was a bit of a shock to me to not be able to find the same kind of talent. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/209650/image/large-9c0d0d6d0813b266a38b8c14f66a361f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/209650">In fairness, I took over at the start of a global financial crisis and we still sold boats, but as far as the running of the company and its commercial operations was concerned, we were simply not good enough when it came to promoting the brand. Since then we’ve gone back to basics, continuing and improving on building what we know to be a fantastic product and bringing that across to our clients in a humble but confident manner.On the other hand, I could not have been luckier with my production team led by Johan, our chief master builder, or as I always say, the real Mr <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2266" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="J Craft Boats (Company)">J Craft</a>. They really are at the top of their game. They have always been – and continue to be – consummate professionals and extremely passionate about what they do.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/209651/image/large-097a9707249d84f4c79d3ef23c420a0b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/209651"> What’s the next step for&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2266" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="J Craft Boats (Company)">J Craft</a>?I want to do the brand justice, and I want to make good on my promise to Björn’s estate. We have a beautiful and very capable product, but we need to put the same effort into developing the brand as we have put into the product. Since buying the company some 15 years ago the pricing environment has caught up and overtaken us, and that has allowed us to develop our business despite paying almost 55 euros per hour for labour in Sweden. You have to remember we build the entire boat in Sweden, not just assemble it, and when looking at the build quality of the Torpedo I think that is self-evident. As far as the company is concerned, it's no longer just a hobby that costs a lot of money, but a business that can be profitable even at low volumes. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/209655/image/large-da68c59b4a0ffc938da30ace29ec8c52.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/209655">We‘re in the process of developing a dealer network and we’ll invest in support for these dealers, including speccing stock boats for the US market with the aim of introducing the Torpedo into the US by 2023. On the home front, we've moved into a bigger facility on the island of Gotland and we’re hiring additional production guys, which means we can bring up our two-boat annual capacity to three or four plus. But I don't want our capacity to dictate production; I want sales to do that. We’re also working with various design houses on some exciting new concepts that are based on the Torpedo platform, but offer clients more choice and flexibility in terms of style and functionality. We’ll be able to release more information on that very soon.As regards our leads, we’ve only ever sold one boat at a boat show and most of our sales come from our existing client base by word of mouth, or from people who literally walk up to us. Just the other day there was a guy who said, “Hey, I really love your boat, can we talk?” You sort of come into their scope of vision and they start chatting with you.&nbsp;We will continue to be a niche manufacturer concentrating on building the best possible product and selling it to the few, not the many. OK, the Torpedo is still a boat, it floats, but people look at it more like a piece of jewellery, a ‘bijou’. What gulets are to Turkey and Croatia, dhows are to the United Arab Emirates. Wrought with tradition with builds dating back aeons – the dhows are an integral part of UAE culture and heritage and are still widely used today. This tradition has spurred on a strange phenomenon: wooden dhow-inspired superyachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262478/image/large-608b9781f319d0cefba1295d8e9e0f70.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262478">The first dhows that danced across the Red Sea and Indian Ocean were much thinner than they are today. Over the years they’ve stretched and expanded to offer more volume and more stability, but originally they were incredibly slender, packed with goods, darting from port to port.Fisherman and pearl divers had different requirements and needed space to carry their equipment and daily catches. Importantly, they also needed space for more people. These beamier boats are a common sight across the UAE and many are so engorged, swallowing entire restaurants to offer fine dining experiences for hundreds of guests at any given cruise.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262477/image/large-c292da7f2fb1c4adcbbbe9af10bd0569.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262477">The wooden superyachts infuse the two traditions. “The DNA of these superyachts relate just as much to the original dhows as they do to the wide beam and voluminous modern ones,” Mahmoud Itani of IR Yachts told SuperYacht Times. “In this region, onboard space is really important as people want to go out with large groups of friends; usage is very different to Europe.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263196/image/large-96a02755f154b9edeb1b5b06b318e78d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263196">"These yachts are hard to trace as they’re custom-built for individual clients and rarely go on the market – or to any shows, for that matter. “I’ve been attending and organising the Dubai International Boat Show for more than 10 years now, and I can’t remember ever seeing a single superyacht on display that was built out of wood,” Itani reflected.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262487/image/large-807cf5d601fc605e401b8d6626a29e8a.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262487"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262484/image/large-ab44a56f02225eb532c9637ba2f5eaf7.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262484"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262485/image/large-675093ccd1a8dc465dee62fd80015b59.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262485">It makes sense too, as these yachts are rarely – if ever – put up for charter, kept in private use away from the public eye. Boat Shows aren’t relevant for the shipyard’s marketing purposes either, as these wooden dhow-inspired superyachts are invariably single units and quite often the only one built and delivered by that particular shipyard.“There are a few boat builders in the UAE that would build one of these yachts, but the design rarely comes from their in-house team. After meeting their own design team, the client will then approach a shipyard in either Al Jadaf or, more recently, Dubai maritime city,” Itani explained. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262497/image/large-ea48a1afc0b6a7773c138f1d503e36bb.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262497"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262494/image/large-c54ef33378f581c876b5bc98b37142df.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262494">We believe there could be as many as 10 in and around the region, the largest of which is on the market listed with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bush & Noble (Company)">Bush &amp; Noble</a>. The unnamed 50-metre Full Custom wooden superyacht was delivered in 2020 and undertook a maintenance appointment last year, which included a complete repaint with a high gloss clear coat. She’s constructed with a teak hull and GRP superstructure, which has then been clad with teak for that traditional look and feel. Henderson Marine International designed and engineered her.With a beam of 10.56, she’s a metre and a half wider than the average 50-metre motor yacht built after 2018. And once onboard it’s the first thing you notice. She’s cavernous and has been styled with the more familiar trappings, all sourced from Italy at “no expense spared,” as central agent <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bush & Noble (Company)">Bush &amp; Noble</a> explain. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262479/image/large-3b074acd794dfdc3701713a1994606a3.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262479">The main saloon is home to many seating areas for socialising, a breakfast bar, two screening areas and a formal dining area. She has six staterooms and can comfortably accommodate as many as 12 guests. She can also host five crew in five cabins.When asked about the buying profile for this superyacht, Bret Noble of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bush & Noble (Company)">Bush &amp; Noble</a> anticipates the most attention from Qatar. "There are many well-built traditional dhows in the region," Noble explained. "Qatar is really the number one region for these boats. But they're also not an uncommon sight in and around the UAE. The 50-metre Full Custom superyacht is unique though and interesting for the Australasian market."&nbsp;The second largest known wooden superyacht is the 47.55-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4428" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tiger47.55m (156'0&quot;)Unknown2009">Tiger</a>, delivered in 2009 and currently berthed in Abu Dhabi.
