Originally owned by Neville Crichton, the famous businessman and motor and yacht racer from New Zealand, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3089" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miss Silver36.19m (118'9&quot;)Alloy Yachts1995">Miss Silver</a> was born from a collaboration between <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/60" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alloy Yachts (Company)">Alloy</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/577" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dubois Yachts (Company)">Ed Dubois</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/61" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RWD (Company)">RWD</a>; a world-class yachting pedigree. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261798/image/large-249ab0f2b25fe4afad0e3e538abda970.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261798">Launched in 1995, the super sailing yacht has consistently validated <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/60" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alloy Yachts (Company)">Alloy</a>’s international reputation for building ferocious, regatta winner sailing yachts and was crowned with her most recent title at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/192" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="New Zealand Millennium Cup 2021">2021 Millenium Cup</a>. In 2019 the yacht changed hands for only the second time. Purchased by another Kiwi businessman, the yacht was cherished as a home-away-from-home during the pandemic, with her owners living aboard with family and cruising whenever possible.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271231/image/large-ea25d64178f2cee39dca61b4cb17ece7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271231">&nbsp;After a number of months sailing and exploring the Pacific islands, in 2021 her owner decided it was time to give the yacht a thorough makeover. While her original interior was well configured, it was also very much of its time, with panelled interiors, dark furnishings and leather sofas. She had begun to look her age and with her owner considering the sale of the yacht, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3089" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miss Silver36.19m (118'9&quot;)Alloy Yachts1995">Miss Silver</a> returned to Auckland where she was due to undergo the refit. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261800/image/large-340f0ca504cd5506f9513cc09228d35b.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261800"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/60" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alloy Yachts (Company)">Alloy Yachts</a>, however, had closed its doors in 2016 due to a decreased demand for large sailing yachts and the team had been disbanded. While New Zealand has its fair share of yacht owners and certainly a very large number of sub-24-metre sailing and motor yachts, few big boat facilities survived and many of the shipwrights had pivoted careers into different sectors. Through friendships with a number of Alloy yacht owners, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3089" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miss Silver36.19m (118'9&quot;)Alloy Yachts1995">Miss Silve</a>r’s owner managed to connect with a number of the original team who’d built her back in the 1990s. He hired a shed in Auckland and brought the yacht ashore, working on the redesign with the old Alloy chief designer and unifying as many of the original team as could be found. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261793/image/large-e5912513e571bbc8d8e7a42513d07b98.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261793">“It was a brilliant experience, these guys stepping back onboard the yacht after 25 years who knew her inside and out and who had memories of working on her in their 20s and 30s,” explained the owner. “We stripped most of the original interior right out with the goal of creating a contemporary and bright aesthetic that gave her a new lease of life.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254872/image/large-38a0ef049454d04ed7f1a461b5e9a8c7.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254872">In the original design, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3089" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miss Silver36.19m (118'9&quot;)Alloy Yachts1995">Miss Silver</a> featured a lounge at the top of the companionway but its use was negligible and awkward. In the refit, the space was reconfigured and now features a small table with rounded seating area to the starboard side and a well appointed bar to the port, meaning that a chilled glass of wine is only a few feet away from the cockpit. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/254874/image/large-ddc1e1795fa685e1165b1797745a4a39.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/254874">The configuration of the saloon and dining area, which is situated on the lower deck amidships, has remained the same as the original, however the Asian-inspired panelling &nbsp;has been removed and replaced. We stepped onboard the Alloy sailing yacht Miss Silver to find out about her refit with her owner.

The refit of Miss Silver and revival of Alloy Yachts' team

<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> has announced that the 47.1-metre superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/864" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Halcyon47.1m (154'6&quot;)Feadship2001">Halcyon</a> has emerged from one of the most extensive rebuild programmes undertaken in recent years by its Refit &amp; Services division.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396848/image/large-8821793a232d9fd6e300af307993cb86.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396848">Launched in 2001 as Northern Lights, the yacht arrived at the Kaag facility in 2025. Initial works focused on a redesigned stern arrangement, a full repaint and a series of technical upgrades. However, it soon became clear that returning the vessel to proper standards, given her age, would require a far wider scope of intervention.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396849/image/large-fc76ffca2e26a85305672b12c99c6657.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396849">"When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/864" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Halcyon47.1m (154'6&quot;)Feadship2001">Halcyon</a> arrived, we expected a major refit," said Captain Joe Gallegos. "As the project developed, it became clear that we had the opportunity to do much more. With a knowledgeable and enthusiastic owner involved, it all came together."The yacht now features major structural, mechanical, technical and cosmetic improvements, while still retaining her original build heritage.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396846/image/large-3c005ecf41d31b63211896ec2b37e432.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396846">Among her most visible changes is a new staircase linking her main deck to her swim platform, together with a completely renewed exterior finish across both hull and superstructure. A number of exterior elements have also been refreshed, alongside modifications made to her mast as part of her broader works.Moreover, the project extended deep into the yacht’s systems. Throughout the yacht, electrical systems were checked and upgraded, with new alarm, monitoring and power management systems fitted. The HVAC system was completely replaced, including new chillers, air handling units and fan coils.&nbsp;Guest and crew areas were also refreshed, including refurbished staterooms, restored marble surfaces, new blinds and updated interior finishes throughout. On deck, new teak was laid across most exterior areas. Key running gear was serviced and overhauled, including steering, shafts, bow thruster and rudders. Cold storage systems were renewed, diving equipment improved, tanks and technical rooms repainted, and her underwater hull coating fully redone after sandblasting.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396850/image/large-75c81ae7c7f8ec276ac58002cfd81609.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396850">The works carried out in her engine room and technical spaces were also substantial. Main engines and gearboxes were overhauled, two new generators installed, and core onboard systems replaced or upgraded. This included water production, ventilation, tank systems, sewage treatment, heating, freshwater distribution and fuel handling. She simply needed vision and attention.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394544/image/large-f191bd60c4deb3732c009830efb76fc3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394544">In 2015 under the ownership of her previous owners, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> had started a refit programme spanning more than $1 million, which lasted five years and saw her receive a full teak interior refit. “It was clear that previous owners had already invested heavily in the yacht,” added Andrews. “The teak interior joinery was exceptional and the hull structure was sound. The quality of teak craftsmanship in Thailand is also exceptional and the cost of skilled labour is significantly lower than in many other parts of the world. By chance I also discovered a local boat carpenter whose family had been building boats in the region for generations. At 71 tonnes, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> is not a small yacht and the thruster significantly improved manoeuvrability for docking. Paired with electric furling systems, her sails can now be easily controlled from the cockpit, &nbsp;which means the yacht can be sailed comfortably by a small crew. “Together with the bow thruster and upgraded navigation systems, the yacht is now far easier and safer to operate,” added Andrews.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394782/image/large-7d015b051a954c975849eb73b943caa0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394782">Currently available for charter, Andrews noted that there had already been interest from charter clients in the Seychelles and the Maldives. “It would feel rather selfish to keep such a yacht entirely to myself! Yet beneath the surface, the real differences emerge in structure, interpretation, and legal context.We asked ChatGPT to compare two superyacht insurance proposals. The outcome was structured, fast, and seemingly logical. Each insurer applies its own structure and hierarchy within the wording, often influenced by the applicable jurisdiction and its legal framework.For example, Policy A may state “worldwide navigation,” while Policy B specifies “worldwide excluding war zones.” ChatGPT may conclude that A offers broader coverage. In reality, Policy A may contain a separate war exclusion clause elsewhere in the wording that has the same, or even stricter, effect.2. Comparing apples with orangesOne operates on a Named Perils basis (only explicitly listed risks), the other on an All Risks basis (everything is covered unless excluded). The same term, but a completely different scope. ChatGPT sees “Hull &amp; Machinery” twice and concludes it is comparable, while the difference in coverage for a machinery breakdown or latent defect can amount to hundreds of thousands of euros.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396820/image/large-aa15c287e8791d5230e10db1b947032c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396820">3. Deductibles and sub-limits are overlookedAI tends to focus on the main coverage and premium, while the real differences are often found in the sub-limits. These include maximum payouts per incident for tenders, crew medical limits per person, and differing deductibles for machinery damage versus navigational incidents. Such details are typically scattered throughout the policy and are easily missed.It also struggles to recognise requirements for minimum underlying covers, such as mandatory national healthcare or other primary insurance arrangements. These elements can be critical to the validity and effectiveness of the coverage, yet are rarely identified without expert review.4. What is NOT included remains invisibleChatGPT can only compare what is written. It cannot identify what is missing. No cyber clause? AI will not flag it, because there is nothing to read. A specialist, however, knows what should be there and recognises the gap immediately.It also lacks the ability to properly assess how coverage is structured. For high-profile owners, this represents a serious privacy risk.6. “Cheaper = better” biasAI tends to conclude that the lower-priced option offers “comparable coverage.” In marine insurance, however, a lower premium is almost always a reflection of reduced coverage, higher deductibles, or an insurer with a weaker claims reputation. It also lacks the ability to properly weigh subtle but critical differences in policy wording, such as a depreciation clause on masts and rigging, or to recognise exclusions that carry the same practical meaning but are phrased differently, such as a market value clause applied to running and standing rigging, which in practice can largely have the same effect.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396821/image/large-5911d8a80dbdc0631242e59608f5517a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396821">7. Under some systems, sailing outside marked channels or ignoring a weather warning may already qualify as gross negligence, with a direct impact on the claim payment. Other systems apply a more proportional approach, or require a much higher degree of misconduct before cover can be reduced or declined.One policy may therefore respond very differently from another, despite similar wording and circumstances. German shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5563" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="YYachts (Company)">YYachts</a> has announced the appointment of Gregor Bredenbeck, who will take responsibility for sales and international expansion.
